I absolutely adore Dr. Torre. He runs a fine establishment and treats his customers (I like to assume ;-) ) with the utmost respect. Yes, I had a few bad experiences with his receptionists, and also with the people that work in the Walmart Vision Center (which is absolutely, 100% separate from Dr. Torre's office, let's get that clear right now!), but I can't let that dampen my perception of Dr. Torre and how he runs his business. The first time I came in for an exam, he gave me a prescription that wasn't quite strong enough. Surely he thought, "no one can be THAT blind." (Sorry if un-PC) Actually, it was likely my fault. Vision tests are very 'subjective' and unverifiable, and I understand that it is difficult to communicate to the examiner the proper cylinder, yada, yada, technical jargon. Blink once.... yes, one is clearer than two. Blink again, and I realize that that was just powdered makeup clouding my conjunctiva. If you're reading this you probably know how downright frustrating (which isn't a strong enough word) it can be to not be able to see, especially suddenly and hopelessly without amelioration. I was sure that my quadruple do-deca-astigmatism (it's a real thing, look it up) was the reason I would never be able to see perfectly clearly with contact lenses. I've always had bad experiences with optometrists and the prescriptions they assign me. I usually walk out of an office grief-ridden and lamenting ever trying to be a contact-lens-wearing, let's-show-the-world-your-pretty-face person. But if you've ever felt the same way, my message to you is to keep trying. If you need to "doctor shop" like I did, do it. If you need to return to your doctor and say, "I'm sorry, but this just isn't right," then Do It! Don't live with blurry vision. You're a danger to yourself and everyone else on the road. I'm glad I found Dr. Torre. He has a fantastic sense of humor, which I so appreciate but is merely a bonus. He takes so much pride in every pen stroke of the prescription, He worked hard to get my prescription right. And he even compensated me for my troubles, none of which was any of his fault. And although it took a couple visits, he made sure I could see the world for what is really was, instead of blurry mosaic of globbity gloop, which I was starting to think was really real. Torre is a great eye doctor that knows what he is doing. I felt very at ease and educated by the time I walked out of his office Torre actually got my prescription better than 20/20. Most doctors I have been to hardly got that. I never expected such professionalism from a vision center in walmart. After waiting for over 15 minutes at walmart with the machine not working, The front desk ladies at dr Torres office next door were extremely kind and professional and let me use their fax machine to take my prescription. I went to see Dr. Torre today and I will definitely be going back. I love younger doctors, I feel I can talk to them a little bit easier and that they can understand my enthusiasm and "no health insurance" situation a little better and Dr. Torre definitely isn't an exception. Although, I don't like him because of his youth, he was very sweet and listened to what I was saying and offered very good medical advice. I went in with bacterial pink eye, praying that I wasn't going to have to pay $200 dollars for a crazy eye drop antibiotic/steroid (they are usually crazy expensive and I was hit with a wave of relief when my drops were only $4. read more

I was in town for a wedding and forgot my contacts (and had an expired prescription), but was able to book an appointment with Dr. Torre the same day. He and his staff were efficient and knowledgable. We didn't have to wait more than a few minutes and, during the exam, Dr. Torre was personable and helped me understand why the subscription contacts I'd been wearing were drying out my eyes. He took the time to explain the differences (and prices!) between a variety of openings, gave me a few prescriptions to try, which more than got me through the weekend, and was funny to boot. I really liked Dr. Torre from his demeanor to his professionalism. I was wary about going to Walmart for my eye exam, but it ended up being a great decision! Another client was in the front room while I was waiting and he was extremely knowledgeable about color contacts and lasik on the fly. He was super friendly, cracking a few jokes here and there with the staff and patients. After chatting, turns out he owned a 25-employee office up in Chicago. He wanted to slow down and spend more time with his family so he scaled down, moved to the hill country and works in Austin. Overall, he seemed like a really stand up guy! P.S. My eye exam for contacts was $89. And when you leave, they give you this handy laminated prescription that you can easily keep in your wallet! read more

I am very impressed with Dr. Torre and his staff at the Ben White location. Dr. Torre has me as a patient for life based on my experience with him. However, I have to say that Dr. Linda Crannell at the 290 W. location does not represent the same professionalism and customer service that Dr. Torre exemplifies. When I couldn't get an appt. with Dr. Torre on a Monday and I had a bad case of pink eye, I was referred to the 290 location where I could be guaranteed to be seen that day. Dr. Crannell seemed nice and competent enough at the time (although she obviously wanted to rush through the appointment and kept interrupting me). But she prescribed steroid/antibiotic drops ($85!) and said it was very important for me to return in 2 days for monitoring and that I would have to be weened off this powerful drug. Receptionist filled out an appointment card for a return visit in 2 days, but when I showed up then (1:00 pm), the office was closed, with a return time of 2:00. I called Dr. Torre's office and they nicely apologized and said Dr. Torre would fit me in that day, but would have to wait until they could get my records from the other location when they opened again. I wasn't happy that I had taken off work and now would be delayed another couple of hours, but I was impressed with the way Dr. Torre and his office handled the situation. Just don't think you'll get the same level of service at the 290 location! read more

His staff was friendly and accommodating and Dr. Torre himself was a consummate professional, all the while adding a little fun and humor to the visit. Fantastic eye doc! Very personable, and kind with the kids. Made our experience very comfortable. This office is located on the exterior of Walmart. He takes walk-in's, but making an appointment will ensure you get seen. My daughter grew out of her prescription in 6 months, so I had to pay out of pocket for the exam. At $55, I didn't feel like I was being overcharged. In and out in 30 mins.. With Walmart in walking distance, having a nice selections of frames, in the dirt cheap sections to designer. He doesn't have his own selection of frames to choose from, but it's nice to not be pressured into buying some at the doc shop. I have been to others where they want you to buy $300 frames. I'm all about the deal! He also gave me a compliment of looking 10 years younger than I am! That's a win! :) read more

I've worn glasses (and now contacts) since I was 5 years old so I've seen MANY more optometrists & ophthalmologists in my day (30 years worth). On top of it, I used to have constant eye issues (pink eye 2x per year, redness, dryness, infections) so I am not a once per year type of customer. Anyway, Dr. Torre is on top of it, is really friendly and cool, and pretty sharp to boot. He now has me in Daily wear contacts and I have NONE of the issues above. Don't fret about going to a Wal-Mart eye doc. He's more than legit and economical as a bonus. He also doesn't sell any products (glasses or contacts) so you don't get that slimy used car feeling that many eye docs give you because they are looking at the bottom line. read more

I had a bit of a boneheaded moment yesterday and ended up in the wrong location for a scheduled eye exam. I am so grateful it was Dr. Torre's office I stumbled into. Even though he wasn't the doctor I'd made an appointment with, and even though it was 6PM (closing time!), he very graciously offered to see me and get me the prescription I needed. He was super friendly and knowledgeable, the exam was extremely affordable, and he even gave me some sample contacts and solution to start off with. What a great guy. I have been visiting this optometrist for 4 years. The Doctors change occasionally. It's close to my home. Never had a big problem until they screwed up my prescription this past month. I was told since my vision had not changed my prescription would be duplicated. Well.....not quite. For the past (4) years I have had "progressive" lenses. This time they ordered "bifocal" which I cannot use and is giving me a massive headache. I spent $130 for new glasses and I cannot even get an "I'm sorry, we made a mistake" from Dr. Torre's office. Yes, I can go back to Costco and reorder the glasses. What's another week or two without glasses? Do not go here if you want someone to be responsible for their actions. I called (3) times before a person finally answered the phone. Always left messages but no one cared enough to return my calls. I requested at least a simple apology - refused. Avoid Dr Torre! I went to this optometrist inside the Ben White Walmart because it was closer to my house and was slightly cheaper than the eye doctor I saw previously. Wow! What a mistake. I have a pretty simple prescription and have never had problems getting it renewed in the past. I thought I was in trouble when he tried telling me that my prescription had changed, I had to go back to him twice and it still wasn't right. I ended up going to another eye doctor who got it right the first time (it was my old prescription, who would have guessed!). The staff at the other doctor I went to even commented that they fix a lot of his mistakes. The small savings I thought I was going to keep ended up costing me a lot more. I also couldn't stand his assistant. She made me stand at the front desk for 5 minutes (I timed it) while she talked to some friend of hers on the phone about their weekend plans. The office was empty (not surprisingly) and I still had to wait another 20 minutes for the doctor to show up--even though I had an appointment. Ridiculous. I'm lucky that Walmart has a good return policy at their optical because otherwise I would have been out $200 for glasses I couldn't wear. Luckily, I hadn't bought the contact lenses he prescribed because I wouldn't have been able to return those (the used ones that is, for obvious reasons). read more

I saw Dr. Ramp at this location. I really didn't go in with expectations. I have a large corneal scar and wanted to see about my options for contacts. I expressed this as a concern. He completely disregarded it. there was no discussion of options. He simply put me in a pair of disposables and told me to come back if I had problems. I ended up having problems and went back. He commented on my corneal scar and was pretty clear that I had no other options if the latest pair of contacts he gave me didn't work. I mentioned my ophthalmologist suggested hard contact lenses, he said that would make no difference. Here I am with blurry vision. I decided to Google options for corneal scar and hard contact lenses are presented as a solution... guess my ophthalmologist wasn't entirely wrong after all. I am going back for a third time to see someone at this practice who will listen and explore my options with me. I will never see Dr. Ramp again... read more

Dr. Torre is highly professional with an easy manner. He was very concerned that my new contacts were comfortable and that I got the vision correction I desired--despite my somewhat difficult case--nearsighted in one eye, far sighted in the other and an astigmatism. I was not going write a review based on my recent experience at Doctor Torre's office because I had previously had very good experiences with him when he had a second office on 290. However, after the wrong prescription was faxed over on my special ordered contacts, I felt like I needed to convey to his office that since downsizing, the quality of care has gone down and it is evident that they have too much work and not enough help. My last appointment was at 12:00pm and I was not seen until after 1. The person I spoke to on the phone explained appointments take an hour and I responded that I understood but I was not seen at all until over an hour after my scheduled time. Her response was, "well that's just how Doctor Torre works." No apology, excuses as to why the wrong prescription was sent over. Just a total waste of time all around. I have many other doctors that value my time and money. I used to feel like Dr. Torre's office was like that, but is evident that their staff just doesn't care. Your loss, not mine. read more

Dr. Torre is amazing! Such a nice guy, really takes the time to make sure that you have the right prescription. I was a little leery of going to an eye doctor that had its office in Walmart, but this was the best experience I've ever had at an eye doctor. He wasn't in a rush and really listened to what I needed and made suggestions for a different kind of contact based on my lifestyle. I don't have insurance but I was able to get an exam and a contact and glasses prescription for around $85. He gave me some trial contacts and a laminated prescription card so I can get my glasses later. I really like that their office doesn't sell glasses, my last eye doctor did and they always pressured you to buy from them. The receptionist was very sweet and helpful, and the fact that I got an appointment on a Sunday afternoon was pretty amazing to me. You should absolutely go here if you need an eye doctor in Austin. read more
