I ordered the "verdad y amor" and my bestie ordered the "Oaxaca to Rio." Having been to Spain this past year. It truly is one of the tapas spots that transports you to there. You will have to pay for it of course as their dishes are not cheap. So you get quality ingredients and well executed delivery of the tapas. You can get wine in the fun porrón drinking pitcher if you dare try it. In a nutshell, our experience at Toro was a confusing one, where the restaurant wants to be high end, but fell way short of expectations. Prices are super high and portions are super tiny. My girlfriend and I spent around $200 on what we feel was an extensive list of tapas, yet left hungry. We go to Spain for several weeks each year, and have to say that the food was nowhere near authentic. The ambiance detracted from the experience, rather than improving it. The loud house music made it difficult to hear our server, and for him to hear us. The house lights were pretty much off the night we dined, and we dined with a small tea candle at our table. Somewhat romantic, but somehow honestly felt like dining in a power outage since we couldn't see the menu. The table next to us had to strategically position their menus next to their candle to read it when they sat down. It seemed like EVERYTHING we ordered came with a little coating of flaked salt, even boquerones (salted already, from the ocean), jamon serrano (already salt cured, so doesn't need more salt), and the oysters, which grow in saltwater, had salt added in them, on them, and were served on a massive mountain of salt. All the salt. As for the tapas themselves: Wine: the wine was OK, felt like a small (4oz?) glass for what we paid. $31 for 2 small glasses of wine. Small selection compared to other places in Boston. Tortilla: Our portion was about an inch thick at the end, served as a tiny wedge of tortilla. What must be the smallest slice ever yielded about 2-3 small bites for each of us. Priced at $10, this was a crazy first impression. We wanted to order more, since the few bites we had tasted good, but this would had made it $20 so we passed on that. Croquetas de bacalao: Prior photos show diners receiving 3 croquetas but we received 2. For $16, this is $8 for just one croqueta, which again we feel is kind of crazy. The croquetas had good cod (bacalao) flavor but were lacking in bechamel, which meant they did not seem silky and smooth. They again tasted fine but really not worth $8 each. Pan con tomate: This was one of the dishes we got that we enjoyed. Expectably priced, super fresh tomato. Decent serving for 2 people. Oysters: So confusing. Again, served on a massive pile of salt, with salt on top, salt on the shell, salt pretty much everywhere. The oysters seemed to be served in a state of limbo since they were not raw bar style, definitely not cooked, not cold yet not hot. The pronounced taste of pumpkin meant that you could not taste much oyster. They were incredibly salty. Crunchy due to the salt, and crunchy oysters just feel wrong. Not worth $4 each. Jamon serrano ($15): This was OK, not the best we've had but not the worst. It's really hard to mess up serrano ham, but the worst part of this was that we are pretty sure it had salt on it. Again, it's salt cured, so adding more salt just takes away from what should be an amazing simple food. Boquerones: We received 6 pieces (each a half an anchovy) for $12. These were just ok but unnecessarily over salted and too expensive. Boquerones are anchovies which are super salty to begin with, without salt added. The crunch crunch of salt and some other bread-crumb-like-topping also really detracted from the essence of this where the boquerone should stand for itself. That is why it is such a star in spanish cuisine. Filete a la Plantxa: We had high hopes for this dish but we received about 8 thinly sliced medallions the diameter and thickness of a half dollar, accompanied by broccoli rabe that was pretty much soaked in oil. My girlfriend could not eat the steak because it was so thickly covered in pepper sauce which had lots of whole peppercorns. It was so spicy, again very salty with crunchy salt, and way not worth $21. Would had tasted amazing without the pepper sauce. Fabada Asturiana: After trying this, we couldn't finish it. It seemed to be made with canned beans, and definitely not faves beans which is how fabada is supposed to be made. Faves are buttery, have some 'crunch' or slight chew to them, but the beans here were mushy. The chorizo appeared to be small 'wet cured' Mexican chorizo, not authentic dry cured Spanish chorizo. The pork slices were just a huge portion of fat. At first we were so excited to find fabada in Boston, but this dish was a massive letdown. Morcilla: The photo of the morcilla ($7) next to the tea candle illustrates the serving size. I understand this is listed as a pincho (pinxto) but we would had appreciated if the waiter let us know that you receive literally one bite. To top it off, this did not taste or seem like truly authentic morcilla which is extremely hard to find. Overall not a good value for money with food not quite meeting the bar compared to the price. The service was excellent - the staff were very friendly and even treated us to an extra glass of wine, which was a nice surprise. As for the food, we tried the Chef's Tasting Menu. While everything was beautifully presented, some dishes were not really to our taste. * Ventresca (Spanish tuna belly with blue cheese mousse): very unique flavor combination, but the blue cheese was a bit strong. * Morcilla (piquillo pepper, quail egg): rich and earthy, but a little heavy. * Atún crudo (yellowfin tuna, sour cherry nuoc cham): refreshing and nicely balanced. * Burrata with pear and walnuts: creamy and delicious, one of the highlights. * Tortilla de Bacalao (salt cod omelet): soft and flavorful, but quite filling. * Codorniz Conuvas (roasted quail with grape stuffing): interesting concept, though the flavor wasn't for us. * Calabaza Sellada (honeynut squash with apricot and pistachio): nicely roasted, slightly sweet, very good pairing. * Flan de Calabaza (pumpkin flan): smooth, with candied pumpkin seeds on top - a great way to finish the meal. Overall, the dining experience was enjoyable, but the flavors didn't all match our preferences, and the price felt on the higher side. The crab croquettes were raw and lacked flavor, the tomatoes were just tomatoes, if there wasn't canned fish the dish would have been boring. Overall, the execution was poor, shrimp was overcooked. Nothing really stood out to us as all of the dishes were on the saltier end. A lot of the dishes didn't have much impacting flavor and that disappointed us. 3.5 experience: We haven't eaten at Toro since 2018 so we were excited to come back especially being new neighbors to the establishment. Food overall was a 4.2. Very good quality tapas. We ordered the foie gras toast, the gambas, artichoke, hangar steak, etc they were all cooked great. Service from server was good as well, no complaints in that department. Fun lively atmosphere like we remember. What bothered us was the welcome staff. When we arrived right on time for our 6:30pm reservation, sure we were seated quickly, however we were told immediately that the 8pm reservation will be coming after us and we will need to pack up at that time. As guests, we felt that was pretty unwelcoming as we haven't even sat down yet! Like let us take a breath! At the end of the dinner it was MOMENTS after 8pm and another host came to our table telling us the next reservation is here. We got the hint and left but we paid over $200 for this meal, we would like to sit down to enjoy it and not be reminded that we have to leave soon. It really made us feel like turning tables is more important to them than the whole dining experience. ESPECIALLY when it comes to being Michelin recommended, the service we received is not. I stopped into this place on a whim and boy am I glad that I did. Very small place with a TON of flavor. The tostadas with the tuna was insane. Flavorful and fresh and the cilantro pulls the whole thing together. The burrata and radish dish was next and I was pleasantly surprised. Radish can be so bitter, but the burrata mellows it nicely. The nuts and citrus also add a sweet quality that makes this cold dish sing. Next was the flank steak. WOW! I wasn't expecting the punch of flavor this steak had. The star here was absolutely the sauce that accompanies the well seasoned steak. Lastly, the house sent over the deviled eggs. I'm not a big fan of anchovies, but they went well with the eggs and eventually took a back seat to the rest of the flavors of the dish. In addition to great food, the place is very well kept and the staff is incredibly accommodating and amazing. My server was wonderful making great recommendations and providing just enough attention without being bothersome. Overall, Toro was a home run for me. Meh, disappointed. I moved from Boston last year, and had always thought of Toro as one of my favorite restaurants. Ken Oringer, the owner, is a James Beard-award winning chef. One would think the food would still be amazing, just because of that accolade. Sadly, no. We ordered smoked eggplant, chorizo and pepper, and goat cheese and honey tapas that come with baguettes. The smoked eggplant was too sweet, and we didn't finish it. The chorizo-pepper one was tasty, but the chorizo wasn't cut up, neither was the pepper; they were just plopped onto a baguette slice. The goat cheese-honey one was delicious and the presentation was great! Then we got Island Creek Oysters- those were nicely presented, but the flavor balance was off. The oysters were very small and the gooseberry and the mignonette was overpowering. For more of a main dish we ordered the sliders, the hanger steak, the crab croquettes and the garlic shrimp. The crab croquettes were tasty and hot but too difficult to cut into; they created an awkward interaction with our food. The hanger steak we sent back because it was too salty, and I even spit my piece out. The burgers were ok, but how do you mess up a burger? The garlic shrimp, again, too salty, but we managed to choke them down. Left with few appealing options, and still hungry, we orders the fries and some egg and potato omelet. The fries were good I guess- a little too much sauce and nothing really that creative about it. The egg-potato omelet was pretty looking but just lackluster in flavor; I could make that in my kitchen. The churros were ok, nothing really special. In summary, the food was just disappointing. I was still hungry, and I had wanted to go to an impressive place for a special birthday for the boyfriend. The ambience- the inside hasn't changed in years, it's not bad, but I would have liked to have seen a refresh since I last went there (about 2 years ago). The outside is just there on the sidewalk with people walking by, nothing much to jazz it up. Except the early 2000's rap music that was on repeat, which was just tacky. On the plus side, the waitress was very friendly, the service was fast, and they had even printed a special Happy Birthday menu for my sweetheart! Not a single one of them was something I would criticize (have posted all pictures). Paella was specifically stood out, but again all the plates were delicious. They have unique cocktails and sangrias were a hit at our table. We need the meal with the churros topped with chocolate sauce which was a must have. I really liked the tomatoes with anchovies on bread. My friend introduced this to me recently and got me hooked. The paella was really good and definitely huge. I had to come right when it opened in order to get a table. The decor is nice inside, but it gets loud quickly. The tables are cramped close together, so you don't have much space to put your jacket or bag next to you. The most significant aspect I dislike about this place is the fact that it is so hyped and hard to get a table. Yet, the food is very mid and extremely salty. We ordered a spiced hanger skirt dish called Filete a la Plantxa which was SO salty it tasted like they dumped a whole container of salt on the steak. We also got elote that tasted just okay, and an octopus dish where they filled it with potatoes and very little octopus. Very tasty food but pricey! And the atmosphere is very much throbbing club music, so good for a girls' night, but maybe not so much if you want to have an in-depth conversation. We went as soon as the restaurant opened - we spotted a line of people queuing for the 5pm reservations, which is always a good sign. Ordered two of the GTOTM cocktails, which left a pretty strong buzz. Usually, with cocktails, you don't get much bang for your buck, but the size of the drink was actually substantial and, because it's so sweet, I guzzled two before the alcohol finally hit. FOOD: 1. My favorite was the spiced hanger steak. It's a small portion for about $20 but absolutely worth it. 2. I could've eaten second rounds of: pan con tomato (which is super easy to make but their version of it blew me away, I loved the crunchy bread they used and the tomatoes had great flavor); grilled octopus; and the patatas bravas (can't go wrong with fried potatoes and aioli). 3. Things I liked a little less: the seafood paella (which seemed heavy on the chicken/chorizo and the mussels were comically tiny). They blast the music here, so I might wait until it gets warmer and try out the outdoor patio. Just a note: We came on a Sat night and they started nudging us out the door around the 2-hour mark of our reservation, given how busy they were. I first visited Toro in 2017 to celebrate a major milestone and remembered really liking it (even better than Barcelona) so figured I'd bring family by when they came to visit. Unfortunately, the second time around at Toro was awful in comparison to the first. Post Covid, we figured we'd make a reservation for the patio and it was supposed to be a sunny weekend day. Unfortunately, it ended up raining but they had no spots indoors so we were stuck outside. Given our reservation, this was fine but it took a while for them to help us out with setting up an additional umbrella so the whole table was covered. Then, ambulance after ambulance went by which we had not accounted for and completely ruined the dining experience. Finally, the food was just awful compared to the previous time (summer of 2017). Everything felt overpriced for the quantity. The paella was a little too salty. The pan con tomate was a kinda soggy and seemed wildly expensive for what it was - two small pieces of bread with smashed tomato on top and like no seasoning. I remember only really liking this bone marrow dish and the shrimp dish. Overall - 5 stars for the first visit, 1 for the second, so I'll average it out. read more

burrata 3.5/5 - burrata with some sort of citrus fruit? it was pretty good gambas al ajillo 4/5 - grilled really well and has good flavor pulpo a la plantxa 4/5 - octopus cooked really, really well valencia paella 3/5 - not too much flavor, but decent sangria 3/5 Spanish tapas that are pretty good! I'm honestly not sure if Barcelona is better than here. Toro is a bit smaller inside, but similar vibes as Barcelona as it is a bit dark and on the louder side. Nothing overly loud or dark though. Service was very good. Quick to take away plates and good timing in between plates. We had made a reservation ahead of time and had no issues once arriving at the restaurant. For parking, there are plenty of metered spots outside of the restaurant. read more
