Tofu teriyaki bento with fried rice
    Stephanie T.

I came back to Tori Japan for their tofu teriyaki bento and it was really good. It was flavored really well and the tofu pieces were smooth. Service is quick and food is always good. If you are looking for something to be prepared quickly and filling, try Tori Japan in the food court at Providence Place Mall.

The restaurant itself is dimly lit but inviting and hosts a large bar. We were sat close to there. I enjoyed our waitress and the server she was training. They offered prompt and kind service. There was also a meal deal where you could order a selection of sushi rolls, appetizers, or classic rolls for a cheaper price. For my dinner I ordered the spicy scallop, Samurai, and salmon with mango. They also brought out spicy mayo and eel sauce for us. The sushi is fresh, the portions are generous, and the ingredients are high quality. I thought the prices were reasonable as well. This is definitely a gem among Italian restaurants and I highly recommend! Parking can be tricky but there are normally spots along side streets you can park at and walk over.

And everything was to my liking. Thick udon noodles with a slight chew and tender chicken. Healthy amount of vegetables mixed in, tied together with a light and simple broth. Overall, nothing ground breaking here. Solid value at $14 so if you have some friends who want sushi but you don't or you're tight on cash, good option. Good feeling overall in this place, little of a lounge vibe, service was friendly, no complaints out of me. It'll stay in the back pocket for a backup.

It took an hour and a half to get any of our food…read more We had 3 people walking in to eat at 6:30 PM on a Saturday... We expected to have to wait for a table and we were OK with the 20 minute wait to be seated. Once we were seated, we were able to place an order within 5 to 10 minutes. While all the tables around us received various items from their order, we did not receive any despite placing orders for appetizers a soup, a salad and items from the sushi bar (so not all items were entrées prepared in the kitchen). We asked for an update after an hour and they told us maybe another 10 minutes and then we had to wait another 30. So in total, we waited an hour and a half to be served any food and all the tables around us were completely finished by the time we got any of our food. Not only that, but the servers did not come and check in on us, they did not acknowledge that we had been waiting for a long time, they did not reassure us that our food was about to come out, they did not check and see if there was anything else we needed in the meantime or let us know that the kitchen was backed up... Nothing. We were hoping that the food would be good enough to make up for the terrible service, but unfortunately, that was not the case. It was right in line with any other Japanese food place. Unfortunately we will not be dining here again.

(It was very cold outside.) To eat we ordered Tom Yum Shrimp soup (more spicy than we expected- and packed to take home), seaweed salad, garlic chili edamame (which we could not finish), tempura appetizer, and Ikura sashimi. It was all quite tasty. It seemed better than in the past. The service was cheerful and the food came out in a timely manner. We had not eaten here for almost a year but will do so more frequently.

As a disclaimer, raw sushi isn't my favorite. I tend to order cooked sushi, so maybe that makes me a fake sushi fan. Anyways, to keep it safe, we went with the California (avocado and crab stick), Wayland Maki roll (shrimp tempura, avocado with masago, and sweet soy sauce), and veggie pad Thai. The sushi came about only after about 10 minutes, followed by the paid thai 5 minutes later. Each roll brought about 6 pieces. The California was simple but good. I enjoyed the Wayland maki more, but I think I would have liked the sweet soy sauce on the side. The pad Thai was delicious. The veggies were mainly scallions, peppers, bean sprouts and maybe snap peas. I think some carrots and mushrooms would have paired well. We both left very satisfied. There was a price discrepancy on our bill (the menu said $15 and the bill said $17), so just be aware some items might be a little more expensive. They don't have a designated parking lot, but depending on the day and time you go, there is plenty of parking on the street. Our waitress was attentive and brought us everything we needed. They do have TVs and are typically on sports channels. In addition, you can watch them make sushi right before your eyes with their semi open station.

We ordered: Korean dumplings Crab Rangoons Momiji volcano Dynamite roll Dancing crab Caterpillar remix Unagi roll Fiesta roll Yellowtail jalapeño Overall the sushi was okay. Usually a fan of soft shell crab rolls and was told it's their most popular but it was disappointing. Not enough crab in each bite. Unagi roll was also disappointing, which is usually an easy roll but was mushy. Crab Rangoons felt pasty, but outer shell had good crunch. Could have been cooked longer cause the center was a bit cold. Yellowtail jalapeño, Momiji volcano, and Korean dumplings were great. Overall the seafood felt like a hit or miss. Some things were fishier than others. Service was decent. Asked about hot teas. Didn't have green tea, was told there was oolong but was given regular black tea... Loved the decorations and space of the restaurant, when we went around 5/6pm it was pretty empty. The biggest issue we had though was there was SOOOO many fruit flies. The whole time we were battling them near our food. Killed 3 while we waited for food. Eventually we asked to move to a different table and told the server about the fruit flies everywhere and when we got to one of the booths there were even more. The fruit flies were hanging out on top of the soy sauce containers and table. We just asked to get a to go box and leave. There really shouldn't be this many fruit flies and if so there is a problem. Likely to not come again.
