I've been coming to Haruki East for at least 15 years, which is probably the strongest endorsement I can give any restaurant. In a state with no shortage of sushi options, this has remained my go-to spot year after year. At this point, I think I've tried either everything on the menu or come pretty close to it. That's what happens when you keep returning to the same place for over a decade. The reason I keep coming back is simple: consistency. The fish is always fresh, the sushi is well prepared, and the food is reliably good. If I order something cooked, it arrives hot and exactly as expected. There are restaurants where you're rolling the dice every visit. Haruki East has never felt like one of them. The restaurant itself is clean, comfortable, and easy to get to. The location is convenient, and the prices are very reasonable considering the quality of the food. That's become increasingly rare these days. The only reason I'm stopping at four stars instead of five is the service. While I've never had a genuinely bad experience here, the last few visits have been noticeably slower than I remember. Service has also felt a bit inattentive at times, and these weren't during packed dinner rushes or busy weekend nights. Nothing terrible, just enough that I found myself waiting longer than expected for drinks, check-ins, or the bill. That said, the food continues to be excellent, and that's ultimately why I keep coming back. After 15 years, Haruki East has earned a level of trust that few restaurants achieve. When I'm craving sushi, this is still the place I think of first. The occasional service hiccup hasn't been enough to change that. We dropped in for a quick mid-afternoon meal - linner. We were the only ones there but were soon joined by others. We ordered a hot green tea and a small hot sake. (It was very cold outside.) To eat we ordered Tom Yum Shrimp soup (more spicy than we expected- and packed to take home), seaweed salad, garlic chili edamame (which we could not finish), tempura appetizer, and Ikura sashimi. It was all quite tasty. It seemed better than in the past. The service was cheerful and the food came out in a timely manner. I haven't come here in a while, but, of my friends had never had sushi so I told him I would take him to the best spot in the city--we landed here. As a disclaimer, raw sushi isn't my favorite. I tend to order cooked sushi, so maybe that makes me a fake sushi fan. Anyways, to keep it safe, we went with the California (avocado and crab stick), Wayland Maki roll (shrimp tempura, avocado with masago, and sweet soy sauce), and veggie pad Thai. The sushi came about only after about 10 minutes, followed by the paid thai 5 minutes later. Each roll brought about 6 pieces. The California was simple but good. I enjoyed the Wayland maki more, but I think I would have liked the sweet soy sauce on the side. The pad Thai was delicious. The veggies were mainly scallions, peppers, bean sprouts and maybe snap peas. I think some carrots and mushrooms would have paired well. We both left very satisfied. There was a price discrepancy on our bill (the menu said $15 and the bill said $17), so just be aware some items might be a little more expensive. They don't have a designated parking lot, but depending on the day and time you go, there is plenty of parking on the street. Our waitress was attentive and brought us everything we needed. I took a gamble in trying a new sushi spot to me, and I'm happily satisfied with everything from Haruki East! For the quality, price, and size of the sushi rolls, I would highly recommend anyone to have a delicious meal here! My eyes scanned the extensive menu which offered a variety of sushi rolls, appetizers and entrees. My partner and I ended up ordering three rolls, the beef yaki soba, and a cold glass of Asahi. Everything we ate, we would absolutely eat it again and again. We ordered the TSC roll which was a crab meat and avocado roll topped with spicy Mayo and big juicy scallops. We ordered the Die Hard roll which was Yellow Tail and Jalapeño on the inside with cilantro on the outside - This was a great palate cleanser. And we ordered the Katano ll roll which had a big shrimp tempura and crab meat on the inside topped with salmon, shrimp, mango on the outside, topped with tobiko, spicy Mayo, and orange citrus sauce. This was the table favorite! We would absolutely come back because the food was amazing along with the fast and friend service. The spot is very casual and relaxed. This is the best sushi in the area. Granted, I have not sample a lot of sushi places in the area but this one so far has been my favorite for years. I just took my friend here while she was visiting because I wanted to give her a taste of the best sushi in Providence. I love the atmosphere; the lanterns hanging outside has always enticed me. The location on Wayland Square makes it convenient to access from East Providence. We called ahead 30 minutes before we to there to make sure they had room for 5. It was no problem! We ordered three appetizers: calamari, crab rangoons, and seafood rangoons. I liked the calamari, but some of my fellow diners felt they were too salty. I did not love the seafood Rangoons myself, but my family did. It was more of a spring roll than a Rangoon, and I am just not a spring roll person. The raspberry dipping sauce had really grabbed my attention, and I was not sure how I felt once I tried it with the seafood Rangoon. The crab Rangoons also left me wanting more, as in less wonton wrapper and more creamy crabby filling. The sushi, however, is where they really shine. My sea dragon roll was wonderful. I would order again! I paired it with a Boston roll, which was also good. For a simple roll, they really filled it with fish and avocado. Service was also very quick! If you're a sushi fan in RI, Haruki needs no introduction. The Providence location has been there for over 20 years, and you can always count on freshness and consistency. Their menu is diverse, but for me, the sushi and sashimi is the star of the show. The maki rolls aren't heavy on the rice and don't come overly sauced. The sashimi is fresh and you get a good portion of your fish of choice. Apologies no photos I was too busy eating their delicious food! We ordered the Lavender Pop and Geisha punch and a Japanese old fashioned- the drinks were fresh and tasty! i've been to wayland square to lounge around and ended up here many times. now i come to wayland square primarily to eat here then lounge around! the sushi quality is so consistently good and i've always had helpful hosts. i mostly come for lunch here but have come for dinner a couple times, and the clean casual look inside works for both meals. i've brought vegetarian friends who enjoyed their tempura and noodle options. i've brought friends who don't eat raw that enjoy their cooked rolls and meat options. they really popped off with their aburti style tuna roll special this last time. i am still dreaming of it. it's a good gluten free place too, they'll bring you tamari if you need it. i've had their tempura fried oreo with ice cream before and shared it because it's so generous. i've really never had a bad experience here and it's been a few years going! read more

I have been going to Haruki East for 15 plus years, one of my favorite places for Sushi. The past 2 visits this Summer were lacking. The menu looked the same however, the Sushi was very different. Our Waitstaff was alone and working both inside and outside, she was not slow, but we did have some wait time. The Sushi was good, but definitely not prepared in the standard I was accustomed to. I ordered Spicy scallops , unfortunately the change there was not so spicy sauce and in place of the whole scallop from the past, there was 1/4 of a scallop. the Shrimp Tempura was mediocre. The outside seating was nice, it was a warm dry day. Inside seating in July was uncomfortably cold. We were not served the customary gratis Jasmine tea from the past years. I later learned Haruki did not own the restaurant anymore, under new ownership now. Not sure if I will go again. read more

I liked how simple yet flavorful my meal was, which came with crispy fried chicken strips over sweet teriyaki sauce, rice, miso soup, fresh fruit, and 3 pieces of California sushi rolls. My friend ordered the salmon teriyaki bento with rice, salad, fruit, and California roll. They offer different choices for the sides. Everything was fresh, cooked & seasoned well, and very neat looking. We both ate every single bite. I stopped by Haruki one evening for a solo dinner. I thoroughly enjoyed the food. The noise level was decent and they were showing a football game. I sat at the sushi bar for my meal. I ordered a roll of sushi (it was something similar to a shrimp tempura roll) and an order of shrimp fried rice. The sushi and the rice were delicious. I had enough rice to take home for another meal. Their portion sizes are plenty. Heads up: they do not detail the shrimp. I'm sure they would if you ask. For both the sushi roll and shrimp fried rice, I paid about $23. I would definitely go back and visit again soon. It had little bit meat on top of skin, which gave some flavor. Nigiri sushi is pretty big for sushi and that price. Although the size abolishes bit taste of sushi, the size for the price is good. Freshness of fish, particularly yellow tail, was nice. I would get yellow tail again. Eel was bit too sweet for my taste. But, if you like sweet eel, it's good. Decided to try Haruki takeout as I was passing by. My friend and I ordered salmon sashimi and 2 rolls (dead dragon and spider shrimp). The salmon sashimi was better than expected, decently fresh, thick cut, and as good as anywhere I've had in providence. The rolls were only so-so, and didn't taste fresh, unfortunately, so I would not order them again. We didn't try any other raw fish besides salmon, so can't speak to the quality of other fish, but if I did return, would definitely go for salmon nigiri or sashimi. The inside of the restaurant looked clean and organized when I went in to pick up my order. However, the person I interacted with was quite rude and made me feel unwelcome in the restaurant. Overall, the experience was 3 stars...although the sashimi was good, could not make up for the customer service and quality for price was a stretch. read more

This is a cute place to have sushi! Located in Wayland Square and has a nice exterior with paper lanterns hanging outside. It smelled fresh right when we walked in (kind of like cilantro?). We were seated right away - we went on a Thursday night so the place was pretty empty. There's also plenty of parking available around the restaurant. The waitress and hostess we had were very nice. We ordered a bottle of wine to start (the White Zinfandel) but it took forever to come. However, when it finally did come, we got to try it and it was delicious!! Definitely a good choice for the group. We ordered right after the wine came (since we were all starving) and the food did not take as long to come thankfully!! Our soup came out first, then the garlic chili edamame (which I would HIGHLY recommend!!!!). One of the best apps I've ever had. They are not too spicy at all so they'd be perfect for any group (just make sure everyone likes garlic first). We all loved it! All of our entrees were delicious as well. Two of us ordered sushi rolls and the other ordered veggie fried rice. Definitely would recommend this place to anyone who loves Asian food. Flavors are all there and its always tender and well cooked. The rolls are good. You could probably choose any of them from a wide selection and it will be flavorful but sometimes with a little too much sauce. Our chicken karaage left a lot to be desired. Salty and not tender. Agedashi tofu was a little soggy but flavors were there. All in all, probably up there in the list of Japanese places in the area. read more

I know. They have a sushi roll that ACTUALLY LOOKS LIKE A DRAGON, and I think the people who make the sushi are wizards, but as an overall rating, I have to go with three stars. Yesterday was my second time at Haruki. The first time I went, I wasn't blown away, but I was also on a date with someone who doesn't eat sushi (WHY NOT MENTION THIS BEFOREHAND?), so it was hard to get a good idea of the menu when I'm ordering sushi for one. This time around, I was able to really dive in, and I thought the maki rolls were very good...but something was just lacking as far as the whole experience goes. The ambiance and the food and the menu...it felt a little disjointed, and not completely authentic. The waiter was a knowledgeable guy, but he was overzealous in upselling everything. As a former waitress, I understand the gig, but I think his motivation was purely money-driven (all of his suggestions were the most expensive items), and I just didn't appreciate the pushiness. At the suggestion of our waiter, we got a beef appetizer that wasn't my favorite, and didn't set the palate for sushi, but that could be a personal preference. The rolls we got were very good; I can't complain about that. The Geisha punch is also delicious, but the juice to alcohol ratio is pretty high. I enjoyed the green tea ice cream, but I think the Teriyaki House has a better version. Overall...I don't mind coming here, but I plan to keep searching for my favorite sushi spot. read more
