When Izumi first opened, I was a huge fan of their food. Until up to my pregnancy, I found myself craving their food. During that period of time, I ordered take out a lot. Today, my father decided to do take out for his birthday lunch with my daughter and myself. He ordered the ground pork lettuce wrap and grilled squid along with other dishes like the salt and pepper pork chop, tom yum soup, and a sushi roll. Now, I don't expect take out to be presented the same way as dining in. It was not so much about the appearance - my biggest issues were that the ground pork lettuce wrap had around two tablespoons of ground pork and the grilled squid was overcooked and just wasn't of the same quality of when Izumi first opened. The pork chop was also just unimpressive. It lacked taste and was also overcooked considering the texture of the pork was hard to chew on. The service wasn't the issue as they are always incredibly pleasant and since we did take out, we can't say much about the ambiance. However, from what I observe it's still a nice place. This was our first time ordering food from here, so in addition to the ramen we also ordered Izumi Rangoon, shrimp yakiudon, general gao chicken, and nime chow. The food was really good but on the more expensive side. The takeout order was packaged well and ready in about 15 minutes from when we placed our order online. Even though the restaurant was full and very busy, the service was prompt and excellent! I was blown away as to how delicious every item my family ordered was; Pineapple Fried Rice, Salmon Teriyaki Bento Box, Shrimp Tempura, Ramen, Grilled Teriyaki Squid and their Sushi. Not many Pan-Asian restaurants make all their menu items very well. I am incredibly happy that none of their food was salty, but perfectly seasoned and their teriyaki sauce is one of the best! The last time we were here was in end of Aug . Came here at 4:30-5pm not in rush hour or weekend either. We waited for 10 mins at least to get our waitstaff attention. We got seated and were left alone for a while. The restaurant only had a few tables so it wasn't even busy. The price of nigiri and maki also have gone up. We came here before going to the theaters up the street. The service was fast and efficient which helped us get there right on time. Parking was so easy as it is in a plaza with lots of spaces. There's also tons of stores around the area so you can conveniently dine and shop in the same trip. The inside is nice with a variety of seating options: high booths, booths, high bar chairs, regular tables. Our table was perfect: it was in the corner so it felt private and next to a window to watch the sun go down. I ordered the general gao bento box and was able to get three sides on top of a salad, soup, and rice. For $21 I thought that was a great deal especially since it was a pretty good serving size. The chicken gao was white meat, tasted fresh, and the sauce was mainly sweet. Most of the pieces were still crispy. The California roll was good and so was the rice. The shrimp tempura was my favorite, it was light, very crispy, and extremely tasty. The gyozas were small but mighty in flavor. I've been here twice now and have not been disappointed. Found this spot in a plaza on the way back from Emerald Square Mall. Luckily we didn't need a reservation on a Saturday afternoon and sat right away. Nice, spacious restaurant with cute decor. We ordered a bunch of items...jalapeño hamachi crudo, tuna and salmon sashimi, lettuce wraps - all surprisingly delicious. Someone ordered fried rice and that was very delicious as well. I'd definitely order this dish again! The fried rice was nicely cooked, not too heavy and the chicken was moist and tender. I visited Izumi recently because I was craving sushi. The restaurant offers is Japanese and Thai fusion, so they offer hibachi, sushi, and Thai dishes. There is something for everyone. I started off with the steamed Shumai, which was pretty solid. For drinks, I shared the Tsunami bowl for two, Tokyo Sunset, and the Sake Lemonade. All of the drinks were really good! My boyfriend and I also shared the Sushi for Two - which featured an assortment of nigiri and chef's choice of two specialty rolls. Everything was fresh and beautifully served. My only critique is that the fusion rolls were basically a raw combination of the other fish we had, whereas I wish there had been two cooked rolls instead. We also ordered a Spicy Scallop roll on the side which was also good. I think the prices are fair and our service was really nice. Good spot for a little date night. Would return. read more

It was dark with no music on until we were there for 20 mins If you're not going to greet your customers or take their order for 35 minutes after you are stated as open, then don't say you're open. It was a busy Friday night, it was also my daughter's 16th birthday so we decided to eat sushi here since it's a tradition to eat sushi on her birthday. I didn't have reservation but they mention it would be about 20 min wait. So I gave them my number and told them I would wait in my car 5 mins later they called. We were hungry so we got a few app and rolls. Everything was great per usual, except for the tuna dumpling, the presentation of that dumpling did not look appetizing at all. Had some colorful sauce on it. I think it was blue and green. The girls did not want to try it. I put 1 on my plate and taste it. It wasn't bad but it was more of the presentation that made it look disgusting. But overall I will not order that app ever again lol. read more

Online ordering site is simple to use and when I came to pick up my food the restaurant was packed with diners plus a number of people picking up take out which I saw as a good sign. Since this was my first time placing an online order they called to verify it which I thought was a nice touch. Sushi was tasty but was falling apart because it wasn't wrapped tightly enough. Crab rangoons were excellent and the spicy sauce was a nice elevated touch over the usual duck sauce. I thought the pad Thai had good flavor but it was a little light on veggies and the shrimp was a little overdone. Would have been better if it was finished in a pan with the pad Thai so it took on some of the flavor rather than just added on top. This restaurant is nowhere near my home. In fact, I have not been in this area in over a decade. But I must say that Izumi might be worthy of a detour any time I travel near the Rhode Island-Massachusetts border because it is just that awesome. The menu has a variety of Asian delights but we were concentrating on sushi/sashimi tonight. And better sushi cannot be had anywhere in anew England. Yes, you heard that right...this is as good as sushi gets. Fresh, carefully selected fish with a perfect rice ball to fish ratio prepared beautifully. I had the sushi and sashimi entree, my son had the salmon lover. The tuna and salmon literally melted in my mouth. The albacore was amazing. The other fish on the plate was just as spectacular. I loved it. My son loved it. We decided that we would finish the meal with mochi. The taste and the presentation were both amazing. The portion size for price point was a bit too high though so I would likely pass on this next time. Lately I have seen too many people recommend sushi restaurants that barely achieve mediocrity (some that do not) so finding this gem was a pleasant surprise. I highly recommend this venue for dining in. The interior design was done by a professional, which makes the fancier and more formal, yet warm and inviting ambiance appealing. There are so many Thai and Sushi places in the surrounding area, so the competition is pretty tight. My picky daughter wasn't too impressed with their sushi, but I enjoyed the Tom Yum soup which I will definitely reorder when I return. I also plan on trying other items on the menu. One thing memorable about Izumi was how caring the staff were. There was an unsupervised kid around the age of 4 running around the busy parking lot and all three employees (host, owner, waitress??) had their eyes on the child. When a truck drove by, they quickly ran out to make sure the kid was safe. This left a very touching impression on me. I wish this business a lot of luck because of this! Tons of parking. read more

I had a bento box but that's not what I am still left thinking about, the sweet potato roll! I loved it! I am weak for eel sauce and it was the perfect combo for me of soft and crunch with the eel sauce plus super affordable! Bring it- I want more! This place SHOULD be everything that it looks like it should be. It's got a cool vibe inside, it's spacious, cocktails looked good and the service was attentive and spot on. To bad the food missed the mark for me. I ordered the Shrimp Teriyaki Bento Box - $ 22.00 (Shrimp and vegetable in a teriyaki sauce. It came with soup, salad, white rice, 4 pieces California roll, 2 pcs of vegetable tempura, 2 shrimp shumai.) The soup was lukewarm and average. A little more fishy tasting then I like. The salad was fresh, but the thick ginger dressing was dumped on the top and had way too much ginger in large chunks. The tempura was ok, but the sauce I am used to getting with any tempura was different and it did not compliment the tempura at all. California roll was ok, a bit dried out, and the shrimp shumai were cold and very fishy tasting. The shrimp teriyaki itself was awful. The shrimp were so overcooked and tough that they were rubbery and after 2 of them, I couldn't eat more. The vegetables were ok, but the teriyaki glaze was just off to me. They are on the pricey side, usually bento boxes are not over $15- 17 for lunch. My friend ordered the Nime Chow (Fresh Spring Roll) ($6.00 ) Shrimp, lettuce, basil and vermicelli wrapped in rice paper, served with peanut sauce. She said the nime chow was just ok. Not much flavor and the sauce was different than what she was used to at other restaurants - too thin. Her Chicken Pad Thai ($15.00) - was also just "ok" .Again not much flavor and the noodles were tough. She didn't even finish it. Who ever thought I'd be giving 5 stars to a strip mall sushi restaurant, but these folks won us over despite my initial skepticism. We usually avoid the chef-selected "sushi/sashimi deluxe for two", but it just seemed safe in consideration of our low expectations. We'll I have to tell you... it was really nice! The fish selection was a bit basic (does anyone offer the exotic stuff anymore?), but the quality, freshness, portion size, and presentation made for a delightful meal. Virtually all sushi chefs do a nice job with presentation, but this was over-the-top with colored LED lights tastefully frozen into blocks of ice, giant fresh leaves transformed into a cantilevered natural tray, and numerous other beautifully arranged design elements. We worried that the chef's choice maki rolls would be cheap and boring but they turned out to be ones we would have picked or better! These folks really made an effort to impress and it worked. The staff were all polite and determined to please, everything was clean (especially the bathroom), and the ambiance, while a little bit overly schmaltzy, all added to the experience. The price wasn't terrible either. We've been eating sushi regularly for over 40 years all over the country and in places like Japan, Korea and other countries numerous times as well. With that experience I can tell you that the food here is right up there with the best New England has to offer when overall experience is important. As a constructive suggestion, hopefully the owners will consider featuring specialties like giant clam, monkfish liver, or other seasonal catches for us adventurous types. There are so many other fish in the sea. Let's give the tuna, salmon, and yellowtail a break and introduce diners to greater variety. It would bring me back more often. read more
