I ordered Sakura last night after a very long hiatus. Sometimes you sushi yourself out & just have to take a break for a little while. I am pleased to report that the Sakura standard is still very high & the prices are still reasonable. I did a modest order consisting of two avocado/cucumber maki & one spicy tekka maki. Nothing groundbreaking. Just the perfect amount of food for hungry me - not too little & not too much that any went to waste. The staff was prompt, per usual! We went to have a pizza near the church where we attended a musical performance of a guitarist and a singer. But the place had closed earlier than usual and we went onto Sakura where we had not been to for over five years. The restaurant is divided into a number of small intimate rooms which also makes it quieter for easy conversation. We were not terribly hungry and ordered two dishes to share. A gyoza which was good and a plate of tempura- a better selection of fish, shrimp and vegetables than in most places. We took some of it home for the next day. The place doesn't serve alcohol which is something we hadn't remembered. The customers at the next table kindly offered us some cold sake which was most welcome. The person, James Martin, owns a restaurant 85 main street in Putnam, CT, which we will try when we are next in that area. Interestingly, the customers at the next tables had also been at the concert and the performers themselves came in to dine as well! The service was quick and the vibe pleasant. Sakura is, in my experience, a perfect casual neighborhood sushi restaurant. It won't necessarily be the best sushi you've had in your life, but it's affordable, consistent, and delicious. The service is great. It's perfect for a casual weekend lunch or a weeknight dinner out. I really enjoy that it's BYOB -- there's a great wine shop a couple blocks away with an excellent sake selection. I visited here while waiting for a meeting g around the corner and I will first say I have grubhub this place and dined I. Today and I much prefer the dine in experience. I was greeted and seated on entering. I ordered the shrimp tempura it came out freshly made. It was reasonably priced and delicious. I only had less than 45 minutes to spear and I joyed my dish without rushing and enjoying the outside view from my seat. Wickeden Street is pretty busy so it nice to see ppl walking by. This is my favorite place to get sushi in all of Rhode island! The rolls are delicious and fun! I especially love the Hot Babe Roll and the I Love You Roll. Sakura is great for take out or eating in. Take out is super efficient and eating in is cozy and pleasant. They have a BYOB policy and two dinning rooms, one is traditional Japanese floor seating. They have fantastic lunch specials- my go-to order is the chicken wakadori- either as the bento box for lunch or the classic dinner. The lunch bento box comes with rice, gyoza, soup and either a california roll or a cucumber avocado roll. The dinner comes with soup and salad and a few tasty noodles that have a sesame oil essence. I also love the yellowtail jalapeño sashimi appetizer. Cozy interior- great for dine in or takeout! It's also BYOB with a $2/per person fee. I've been so on the fence about posting, because for almost a decade Sakura was my favorite lunch spot in Providence, but ultimately the illness I got after eating here warrants this review. The last time I came here I ordered the sashimi dinner. It came with several kinds of raw, "fresh" fish. I noticed that the tuna looked particularly vibrant in color, but-- because I have come here so often and for so long-- I brushed this off and ate it anyways. I now suspect that the tuna was colored to cover up for the fact that it was spoiled. Within hours, I started feeling off. What ensued was nearly 50 hours of fever, vomiting, body aches, and general disaster. "Acute food poisoning." I have never been so sick. I will never go back. When I recovered, I called to inform them but was unable to reach a human. I will never recommend Sakura again. I don't know what's going on in the kitchen, but it cannot be code compliant. This one experience was so terrible it has cancelled out the years of lunch specials, dinners, and birthday parties I have had here. Be warned. read more

First off, it was around noon on a weekday and the restaurant was mostly empty (maybe 3 tables including mine) but I heard the phone ringing and people coming in and going out so I'm guessing they were focusing on takeout orders. A table of 3 near me received their food and very slow waves. Their sushi took forever. They were vocal amongst themselves on how unhappy they were with the service and I can't blame them. It was extremely slow and basically nonexistent. I ordered the Kari udon or curry udon with chicken. There were so many vegetables I could barely pull the noodles out from underneath to eat them. Also there were so many vegetables it was like a blanket over the broth and the broth had no chance in hell to cool and so I burned my mouth the entire time I ate it because I had to get back to work and had already been waiting a while for me food and had to time to waste quite frankly. Additionally, it was only so-so. I was not very impressed and thought the food I had was pretty forgettable. i've been down wickenden sooo many times and can't believe i never paid attention. what a cute cozy sushi spot. i regret not doing floor seating but will next time! our server was so kind and patient with us as we kept ordering and deciding in between plates if we wanted more. i will say the savory entree was okay, no regrets, but not the main star of the show. the sushi was definitely fresh and yummy. miso soup was also a good warm option to open up with. also their tea came in a tea bag so i asked for miso soup instead and they were really nice about it. will be back :) read more

3.5 stars Decent sushi with a cute interior. I tried the crab rangoon, shrimp shumai, and the four seasons roll. Sushi was better than the apps, in my opinion. The crab Rangoon were small and quite light on the crab. The shrimp shumai were a bit soggy with a strong orange sauce that tasted artificial. The four seasons roll was tasty, but I wish they didn't pound the spicy salmon so much, but I guess that's the nature of spicy salmon. There wasn't that much mango in the roll, but it was tasty regardless. The interior was really cute and would be good for a date. They also have this room for larger parties with cool seating. Came here for dinner on Fourth of July, luckily was one of the few places that didn't have a wait. There's a table seating area and also an area where you can sit on the floor. Got miso soup, edamame both of which were good. Also got the pork shumai which was bigger than most places though it tasted pretty good. Chicken teriyaki was somewhat dry and not tender. Their yam roll and cucumber avocado roll were pretty good but their fire roll wasn't that great. Overall decent experience. BYOB place and there's a liquor store nearby on brook street. Can't believe I haven't reviewed Sakura before! IMO this is the place to get sushi in Providence. It's super conveniently located right on Wickenden. I am vegetarian so I usually order the yam roll, avocado roll, ume plum roll with shisho, or Japanese pickle. I appreciate that they have a good amount of interesting vegetarian maki options, it's not just avocado and cucumber. The vegetable tempura is just OK, I would stick to the sushi. Back in the day it used to be super fun to eat in, BYOB, and do sake bombs around the table where you sit on the floor. They stopped doing dine in for a while because of COVID so these days I usually just get takeout from their website. We ordered two dishes that weren't authentic including pork shogayaki. No taste of ginger. The maguro sashimi and sushi were from frozen fish, obviously thawed, thus no taste. The owner and wait staff, it turns out, are not Japanese. So D- on the food. The biggest problem, it turned out, is that the restaurant sat a young family with a nine-month old screaming child in the area we were seated. The mother resented the fact that we were uncomfortable, and the service staff did nothing to address the issue. This may be a social problem, but I believe parents need to respect other diners. First off the food is incredibly fresh, it gets delivered every 2 days and no food is ever sold after more than 1 day and maybe a few hours. The service is always consistently great, very kind staff with quick and efficient, experienced chefs. You can either sit down at a normal table or choose to sit down on the pillows, both of which are quite comfortable. Since there are 2 layers of walls between the road and the main seating area it was quiet and relaxing inside despite being close to the road. The prices are very reasonable for the high quality of the food, the chefs are obviously highly experienced and trained, this isn't just speculation as you can physically see them working as soon as you walk in. None of the sushi ever falls apart, the rolls are all delicious with just enough rice, the hand rolls have the seaweed still crunchy when they come, cucumbers are all peeled, consistent slicing on all the fish, and there is minimal to no temperature difference in the rice and the fish. I have been here numerous times and it is by far the best sushi place I've been to, and best of all it is not just amazing but CONSISTENTLY amazing. If you don't like sushi there are all kinds of noodles and dumplings and so many other things that will guarantee you at least like something. It might seem like parking is an issue but they have a huge parking lot in the back that guarantees a space for you. I highly suggest you go if you're reading this review, as you are probably looking for sushi places inside providence, because this is the best place. I have not been back here in a long time. I am happy to find that this place is still decent. I think the ownership changed since thenbut I am encouraged that a few samplings of food I had was authentic enough for me to think about coming back. The only thing I was disappointed was the level of service. The service was slow and rather spotty. I was bit taken back by lack of attentiveness by some staff. Perhaps it was their age, young and not seem too interested in working in the food service. The dish I had tonight was katsudon. It's a rice bowl dish with fried breaded pork cutlet that is cooked again in a shallow pan with eggs and onions. I love this dish and they did a great job of flavoring it the way it is supposed to be. This dish was a staple dish for me when I was young working guy in Tokyo. The taste of the dish immediately brought back some memories. The dish is usually served in a bowl, but it was served in a plate, as you see it my picture. I'm surprised. Usually, this is my go-to place in Providence for sushi (service is fast and staff is friendly) but this time I was not impressed. It was pretty packed when we got there, but we were seated pretty quickly - in the back where we always like to sit - but our server took FOREVER to come over. We had a bottle of wine we'd brought but we couldn't open it because we didn't have any glasses to pour it into. We finally got our water, then the waiter took another 5 minutes to come over with the glasses. We then got our menus and we waited - no joke - 20 MINUTES for the waiter to come back over and take our order. We were ready to go looking for him. Then our food took a little while to come, but I appreciated that all of our appetizers and soup/salad was brought over at the same time on a large tray. We all got our entrees at separate times, which wasn't great (they all came out a few minutes apart). Seriously, have no idea what was going on in the kitchen that night. Then, we were sitting with our plates for ANOTHER 20-25 minutes before the waiter came over with the check. Unbelievable. I'd go back since the food is good and prices are decent. And BYOB.
