We have been eating at Top Thai for many years and it's one of our "go to" places for lunch and dinner. We typically order chicken satay, bbq chicken, pineapple fried rice with chicken, beef pad see ew and mango curry with chicken. Recently I tried their gai kapow and it was amazing. Every dish we've tried has been delicious. We've had good success with take out or dine in. The staff there knows us as we are there frequently. Service with only two staff made the wait for requests longer , although wait for the food was ok. They were too busy for dinner customers and pickups so 2 front staff is not enough during peak hrs. The front room was busy with people coming and going for picking up deliveries/takeouts, but there is another room to the side if the front gets full. Thai decor was nice, and restroom is decent. Small family owned restaurant located on a Main Street in Castro valley. Parking lot has minimal space, so we opt to park on the street. There isn't a front cashier or hostess, just a sign to ask you to wait as you enter before being seated. Without a waiting area, it got crowded when another larger group came in after us and the servers were too busy to notice. Once we were seated at a booth and given menus, we noticed that the prices for the dinner a la Carte is quite reasonable - on average $12. Rice is extra side order. The flavors of the dishes are decent, I found that the pad Thai sweeter than I would like, the curry wasn't as flavorful, and the pad kra pao on the water/saucy side. AMAZING. This place is great, and there Curry does not disappoint. I did find their Tom Yum to be on the sweeter side, so keep that in mind depending on your preferences. The yellow curry was amazing and one of my favorite things to try! I also like that they were able to make the pad Thai flavorful without over spacing it. Some are dishes are rated higher but I'm not going to take another chance after this. It's small restaurant, it's pretty quiet inside and parking is hassle. I really wanted to give this place a good rating but finding two flies my food. I feel sick, I ordered a lot of food and threw it all out. We ordered DoorDash from Top Thai this week even though I live about a few minutes away! Just wasn't in the mood to leave the house after a busy work day. We got the chicken pad kee mao and pad thai. I'm not a huge fan of the usual sweet flavor of pad thai, so I asked for it to be medium spicy. You definitely get a lot of noodles in the pad thai! It was a pretty dense box. The pad thai flavoring wasn't evenly mixed so you got a bunch of spicy with some bites, while others had rarely any. Great flavor if it was thoroughly mixed together though. The flavor on the pad kee mao was on point! It was my first time having this dish... I can see why it's a favorite here! The only downside was that the noodles were over cooked. Quite soft for my liking. Overall, you definitely get your bang for your buck here compared to other Thai restaurant competitors. Both dishes had aroma of flavors and tender chicken. Great portion size. My family and I just visited and we ordered the Panang Curry, Yellow Curry, Shrimp Fried Rice, Mango Sticky Rice, and their Thai tea. Panang was nice and flavorful. A little spicy but so tasty. We got it with chicken. Yellow Curry with chicken was my daughter's favorite. Not spicy at all and the vegetables were so soft and delicious. My son had the Shrimp Fried Rice. Hes currently with braces and it was easy for him to eat. He said the portion was huge and he even had some to take home. Mango sticky rice was great. I have been coming to this restaurant for years! Over 10! I ordered lunch which contained shrimp. When I picked up my order I was rudely greeted by an associate that used to smile and have small chit chat with me. This visit she was very cold, no eye contact. It's as if she didn't know who I was. Anyways, I paid for my food and brought it home. The shrimp was not fresh! I called the restaurant and explained to them the shrimp was not fresh and I was on my way back to the restaurant. The manager was very rude to me on the phone and hung up on me. The audacity! When I arrived at the restaurant, the door was locked. I was in total shock!!! Thank God I put the order on my card. I called my credit card and explained my situation to the representative. They were even shocked and waived the fee. I will NEVER eat or recommend this restaurant to anyone. General: I find it very difficult to get tasty thai food at a reasonable price and this place is IT. The food is flavorful and delicious, plus they SERIOUSLY pack the food in there. I mean I can eattt and one dish (~$11) is still two meals for me. The dish came in a medium container so it is deceiving, but as you scoop some out into a bowl, you'll realize how much they compacted in there!! Food: Crispy roll: these egg roll like appetizers come in 5 plus a delicious sauce. They are FILLED and flavorful. they aren't too oily, either, which is usually the issue with egg rolls. Pad Kee Mao with Pork: they added the perfect amount of veggies, and the noodles and sauce were as expected. The pork was so perfectly done. Soft, tender, juicy, but not too chewy. Pad thai with chicken: Good but not great. Chicken was a bit dry but maybe cus I took so long to eat it. Could have more flavor power. Has peanut! Mango with sticky rice: i haven't had these in a while and it was perfect. Not too sweet, not very saucely but still flavorful. They picked a good mango. Drinks: Thai iced coffee: It is very sweet and coffeelicious but not that strong. Thai iced tea: As you would expect thai tea to taste! Not made from powder. Parking: it is a small shop with not much dine in space or parking, but you can park down the street by cvs and walk a couple minutes up no problem. Service: The sweet woman who manages? Owns? The place is great. She warns you about the wait time in advance (40 min on a Friday night) and asks you if you still want to proceed. They ensure peanut allergy before ordering certain foods. You can call in so you don't have to wait around there. They will call you when your food is ready. I am SO impressed with their service! I wanted Thai food and was on a time crunch. I had 30 minutes to grab food since I had to get back to a call. I didn't catch the name of the lady managing the front of house. She told me 10-15 mins and it was exactly that. Parking: mostly a treet and maybe like two awkward spaces. Food: I wasn't in the mood for poultry nor tofu so I said veggies only. She upped the amount of broccoli for me. The pad see ew was nice. Bland when it's pipping hot but when I let it settle I could taste a bit more. If you like I spicy, request it or you'll be disappointed. This tasted more healthier and less saucy. Which is what my stomach honestly needed. The inside makes me super happy to see that they are following orders. The steps helped the person standing behind me not make me feel awkward. Not many places offer Khao Soy and they do! It also looks like what I had in Thailand. Whereas, other local shops have their own spin and it's good but lacks authenticity. I was able to pay with card for my meal that was roughly around 12 and some change. I hope to be back and continue supporting shops that are following measures.
