First off, this place has been here for as long as I can remember. During my college years, I have seen this place and almost 20 years later, it is still here. Longevity in the restaurant business is tough so when looking for a place to add to my takeout list as a new resident to Castro Valley, I had to give this place a try. I have been in Castro Valley for about 7 months now and have gotten take out from here at least 5 times and every single time, my wife and I have been greeted and treated with love by the owners. Were there a few times where I had to wait a little while longer because of how busy they were or issues in the kitchen? Of course yes, stuff like that happens. I am a patient and understanding person. What is always consistent is the warmth that the owner just seems to emit, it must be the Thai culture and personality as having traveled to Thailand more than a handful of times, I felt the the love from the people. Now for the food. We usually order pad see eww, crab fried rice, angel wings and a few currys. The food always comes super hot and delicious, havent had a bad experience yet with the food. We ordered: - tom kha with chicken - flavors were good, but chicken was dry. - pad see eww - flavors were also fine but beef was extremely chewy. - grilled salmon with curry on the side - salmon was overcooked; without the curry on the side, the vegetable vegetables and salmon would be extremely bland Not sure how they were out of sticky rice when had just opened at 4:30 PM. I arrived after 40 minutes as instructed, but after checking in at the counter, I was repeatedly told to wait. I ended up standing there for another 30 minutes without anyone helping me or providing any updates. When I finally asked again, I discovered that my takeout order had been sitting next to the counter the entire time. No one informed me it was ready. The pad thai leaned noticeably on the sweeter side, to the point where it overpowered the savory and tangy elements you'd typically expect from this dish. I was hoping for a better balance between the tamarind, fish sauce, and lime, but the sweetness kind of dominated each bite. The chicken itself was okay. Nothing particularly standout, but cooked fine and mixed throughout. The Thai tea that came with the lunch special was decent and a nice touch. It had that classic creamy, sweet flavor and paired well with the meal, even if the overall sweetness of everything combined was a bit much. We visited on a Thursday evening around 5:30PM and this place was packed! We were so surprised, but that's a good sign, right? Parking is a bit rough, there is about 3 available spots in front of the store and the rest is residential street parking. Which required a permit if you visit Monday-Friday, 8AM-5PM(some something similar). Weekends, no parking restrictions. It took roughly 10-15 minutes before we were seated, they were so busy I think the lady just didn't have time to seat us. When we got seated, it was another 30 minutes before we were able to order. Then another 15 minutes before we got food. So from arrival to food was about an hour. Which was all fine for us since my friends and I were catching up! If you're here for a quick meal, that may not work out. By the time we finished our food and ordered dessert, they were closing(9PM). It was a very slow process, but the lets talk about the food: The food was very well seasoned and delicious! What we ordered: - Papaya Salad - 5/5 Fresh, crunchy, good portions and delicious. Maybe one of the best ones I've had, the spice was good but not unbearably spicy! - Chicken pad thai - 4/5 Good, but I definately wished there was some bean sprouts, peanuts and lime to add some texture. It was more like a big bowl of very well seasoned noodles with chicken. Which is good, but felt like it was missing something! - Mango curry - 5/5 Delicious, no spice really. Creamy and paired very well with the rice. They really put chunks of mango in the curry! - Bamboo shoot stir fry - 4/5 My favorite are bamboo shoots and there werent a whole lot of it. Nonetheless, it was good, but I was sad there wasn't enough bamboo. - Mango sticky rice x2 - 3/5 Good, but clumpy and very very sweet. The most sweetened Mango sticky rice I've ever had, they must've added a lot of sugar to the coconut milk. We had to use the back of our spoons to get the rice clumps mixed into the coconut milk. Overall, it was a good experience. Table service was kind of nonexistent, so it took a long time to get our orders and they were so busy we never got any water refills. Price-wise in this high inflation poor job market economy, this is one of the best places to get lunch on a budget. Thai dishes were spot on. Not a fan of the crispy rolls due to the content. There's not a lot of parking in the little lot, literally 3 in front and 3 on the side. There's street parking around though so that's not too bad. The service was top notch. I was the first to get there for a party of 4 and they always made sure I was set with water, drinks and apps. They were pretty busy for a Wednesday night and I saw a lot of take out orders which gave me high hopes. One of my friends is vegan and they were super more than happy and friendly to accommodate her diet. The rest of us shared family style and were super happy with our dishes. Everything was flavorful and honestly, better than expected from this hole in the wall spot. It was decently portioned for a moderate price tag. Never goes wrong with this place. I usually eat in there but today I ordered Togo and was impressed with their packaging. All lids were close tightly and extra bag for the curry. The mango curry did not seem like there were any mangos - it just seemed like bland yellow curry with dry chicken. Food is great when it finally comes to your table. Way understaffed. We were there for 25 min before we ordered! Eggplant sauté was excellent. My regular pad kee mau had some burnt noodles but still very tasty. We ordered chicken fresh rolls but they came after our main dish! The cashier Nuo is extraordinarily nice. She's there all of the time, always busy, and always makes time to make me feel welcome. My favorite is the Pad Kee Mao w/ Chicken, spicy. It's okay mild, too, but spicy is the best. The decorations are colorful but pleasing to look at, particularly the giant picture of bangkok at night, and the board next to the cashier with a collection of kind notes and gifts that were given to the restaurant. Pad Kee Mao - (5/5) Delicious, this dish has a mild spicy kick and crunch from the veggies to it. Pad Thai - (4/5) Solid dish, will need to re-try since I can't remember the flavor profile. Green Curry - (5/5) This curry was addicting, couldn't get enough of eating this with rice. One dish was enough for at least 3-4 people. Yum Nua - (4/5) They make salad and beef taste great together. There was a fish-sauce based sauce to this dish, reminded me of Vietnamese Vermicelle dishes. Delicious! The beef was slightly dry, would be better if it were more tender and juicy. It's good. Top Thai has been a staple in Castro Valley for a long time! The portion sizes are large and there are lots of options for vegetarians/vegans. Both came with the protein and vegetables piled high. Although refreshing to see that, I really wanted to enjoy the tom yum broth and the curry by themselves. The broth was spicy enough to feel it. Whereas the curry was sweet with a hint of spiciness. Again, on its own I could have drank as a meal. The service was friendly and attentive. Stopped by since I was craving fresh pad thai. The lunch special was really good, around $13 for noodles and a variety of rice/curry platters. I got the pad thai and the chicken wings ($13 during lunch) and it did not disappoint. The pad thai is crazy portions, filling up a huge bowl with huge pieces of chicken. I've had better pad thai, but it was pretty good and the portions made up for it. I ate maybe 1/4 before taking it to go. The wings were crunchy and super yummy. I honestly hate leaving negative reviews especially for a small family owned business but the food was not good at all. The yellow curry had absolutely no taste at all. Completely bland. Tasted literally like nothing. The pad kee mao was also tasteless, and the beef was really tough. I tried chewing two different pieces, I kept chewing and chewing and the beef would not break down. I ended up spitting it out. Threw away about 80% of the food. $50 down the drain. The thai iced tea was delicious though which is why I'm giving 2 stars. read more

We got an appetizer and entree to share and still had leftovers! SATAY CHICKEN - 12 Each order comes with five skewers of satay chicken which wasn't too seasoned on their own. The peanut sauce on the side was on the sweeter side. I didn't love the combination of the chicken and sauce, but maybe this is more so of a personal preference. PAD KEE MAO WITH PORK - 13.50 The portion size here is huge. I am a huge fan of stir-fried wide noodles and that is what this entree is. I loved that there was a good amount of veggies, eggs, and pork. I probably wouldn't choose pork for this entree again since it's pretty dry and not super flavorful.
