This review goes for their individual ordering, as well as a large order I called in ahead for pick up. + Indonesian Fried Egg Noodle is deeeelicious! What I love about these noodles is that, compared to other Indonesian places, there is a lot less oil in the noodles. + BBQ beef: Delicious and well marinaded; their marinade sauce is slightly different than other Hawaiian places; it's slightly just a bit sweeter, and less salty than other places. + BBQ kalbi ribs: same, same sauce as the BBQ beef. + Curry chicken katsu: curry sauce is SO GOOD! It's not like indian or thai curry, the closest thing I could relate it to is Japanese curry, but it's not even that similar to Japanese curry either. It's just good, so just try it! + Kalua pork: very well seasoned, and there is a very nice smokey flavor to the meat without being overly salty One thing I wanted to note, about placing a large order the day before, that they were excellent and superb! Leely was the one that helped me, and she even called me a few minutes after placing the order to let me know that she charged the credit card that I gave her (first great point). Second, I asked her if she could have it ready by 11am (they open at 11am), and she asked if it was okay to be ready by 11:15am, which is totally fine as well. She called me the day of the pick up, to let me know that it's ready (second great point!). After my office divulged into the delicious food and finished our lunch, I got another call from Leely, to ask me if everything was good for everyone (third great point!!). All in all -- GREATTT customer service! This would totally be my go-to place for all my Hawaiian and Indonesian ordering. Next I'm gonna order, is the ox tail soup! SOOOO looking forward to that now. I have been coming here for the past 5-6 months, and I can honestly and truly say by now it is the best Hawaiian/Indonesian food I have tried by a landslide. My favorite has to be the chicken Katsu with double macaroni, I always thought L&L was the best but until you try this you do not know what you're missing out on. Food The food here is great the macaroni salad is by far best bar none the chicken is always cooked to perfection never under or over cooked. The fish is good as well though I would still say their chicken on the menu is the best. Price It's a very decent price for portion. In fact I would go as far as saying it's great. Have been a regular since the first time trying it with its new ower about 1.5 years ago. I love its specialty indonesian crab and bangka noodles. Indonesian spicy fried rice is also excellent. The fried chicken is up there after Bouchon, Tokyo in my favorite and unique tastes! Thoughtful family restaurant, my go to is the Indonesian Fried Rice, fried chicken, macaroni salad, and spam and egg musubi. Another great thing is their pork, very tender and well seasoned. I'm so lucky to get these island flavors in Pasadena. Delicious! The other foods don't disappoint but I don't think there's anything too special either. Top Restaurant can be described in two words: urban decay. It almost seems as if the restaurant came straight out of Jakarta and plopped right onto Colorado Boulevard where it is now taking residence. I stepped in and found myself traveling. It looks like there are old chairs with the pleather backing and the metal trim. The linoleum on the table tops were cracking a little bit and the light filters were a little yellow from the grease and grime. If anything this restaurant has character. And I love character most of the time. The service is cute. It was mother daughter team in the kitchen and at the counter taking orders. I did a to go order of their famous fried chicken. It was heavenly and the sauce you get with it could only come from a wisened aunt cooking for you. They looked like they do a lot of take out business as I saw many people pick up their food while I waited for mine. I can't give it a full five stars because I only had the chicken. Agggh! Yelp, get with the program! These limited categories you give us suck! Folks, while this place does have Thai and Chinese, it is actually an Indonesian restaurant, and, may I add, a good one. This place has been in the same location for 18 years. If you go, please don't let the dingy modest surroundings and decor fool you. The food is great and they have a very nice variety of exotic yet healthy, hearty, and satiating dishes for vegetarians as well as full-on carnies. The lady who runs the place is very sweet and has always been very accommodating. If you really want to be daring, ask for petai beans to be added to your veggie curry. We've been back now a few times and they have a knack of remembering their customers. Super friendly women who can't help but suggest amazing food for you to try. What really drove me to this place was the fact that Lisa said they have Lemper! I haven't had lemper since I was in Asia! Fantastic! Definitely does the lemper-craving good. The husband loves his Nasi Goreng done nice and spicy. And their fried chicken really is fantastic.. crispy and full of juiciness. Sure, nowadays I go to all sorts of crazy SF dives with inauspicious locations, the ambience of a laundromat, and indechiperable menus, and never blink an eye. But when I first came to Top I was still very much a Baja Fresh 'n' Jamba Juice kind of guy, and I can remember being just a bit apprehensive about it. Ah, those young and innocent days. But luckily the Caltech elders had passed down their wisdom to me (this of course, was about 7 years BY - Before Yelp), and I knew to order the Nasi Bumbu Rujak Ayam. It's an Indonesian dish of chicken covered in the most delicious spicy coconut sauce, served over rice. And of course you wash it down with an equally delicious Thai Iced Tea. It ultimately became my wife's favorite meal of all time, and she dragged me back here constantly, so I got to exploring the menu and discovered a couple other dishes of note: the Chicken Oseng Oseng and the Babat Gongso (it's made with tripe, yum!), which are both a little spicier and less creamy. The owner is a sweet old Indonesian lady who cooks everything herself in the back while her daughter takes the orders. They're the only two employees. I'll never forget when they took a long trip back to Indonesia and closed the place down for a month...those were dark days for us indeed. read more

Love Love LOVE this gem of a place I found. It is a cute little mom and pop spot in Pasadena that serves Indonesian food and hawaiian bbq. I ordered a chicken katsu mini meal and my husband ordered the nasi goreng 'mawut' fried rice. The lady who helped us in the front, I assume is the owner, had impeccable customer service. She offered an extra ice cup for the soda can we ordered and offered hot sauce for my husband who thought the rice needed more spice. She came by a couple of times to check up on our table and you could tell this restaurant is loved by the community because there were a lot of regulars that came into the restaurant and she knew every single one of them. The chicken katsu mini meal was big enough to share between me and another person. The chicken actually had chicken and not all breading, and the price was cheaper than what I would've paid for at L&L or ohno. Frieken this place rocks, with great customer service, plentiful food, cheap prices, who wouldn't want to come here. have you ever tried spicy squid ink (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/top-restaurant-pasadena?select=5AX2YxfIbWr35BsJLLwYkw#5AX2YxfIbWr35BsJLLwYkw)? if not, then you should put it in ur must try list. i knew this from a friend of mine and she highly recommended this dish to me.. so the last time she went, i asked her to get me one order to try. one order would give you a fairly big cup for only $7.50. i thought it was pretty cheap. the squid taste spicy (just the way i like it) and super duper salty to the extent that you will have your daily sodium intake just by eating 1-2 tablespoons of it. but you are not supposed to eat it by itself, you need to eat it with rice which is the perfect compliment. one cup would last me about 2 weeks since i only ate 1-2tablespoon at a time and eat it it with rice.. so $7.50 for 2 weeks..! what a cheap lunch and meal right!! but u may get sick and bored of it if u eat it everyday. you have to order this squid ink in advance as they wont make it unless you place ur order. i have never been to the actual store before but it sounds pretty descent. i may make my visit the next time in in the area to try their other dishes and to get my squid ink. some advice - u may want to eat some banana after eating this squid. the rich potassium content in a banana will help balance out the excess sodium intake from this black ink squid dish :) read more
