Honestly the food isn't worth 4 stars but I'm a fan anyway since it's decent and the price is definitely right, plus I love the outdated 1970s ambiance. Just feel at home here for some reason. Also 3.99 breakfasts and 1 dollar Bud tall cans overnight. Breakfast of champions. Steak and eggs breakfast (4.99) - Yeah the steak is a little small and a little tough but the flavor is alright ... I mean considering you're getting steak, 2 eggs, a heap of hashbrowns and toast for 5 bucks. My go-to "day after upper body" or "I skipped dinner last night"breakfast in Reno Spanish Omelette (4.99) - Mediocre huevos rancheros in omelette form. Edible but I wouldn't get it again. French Toast w/ Eggs and Bacon (4.99) - Solid choice. Only 1 slice of toast (halved) but 2 big eggs make up for it. French Toast good, everything else OK. Might want to try the sausage instead, bacon was the weak link here Belgium (no typo this is what they call it) Waffle (6.30) - Man I was surprised at how good this was for getting it at 5:30 on a slow morning. If you're craving something sweet and cakey with some coffee for breakfast this is the JOINT. Big waffle w/ decent strawberry sauce and they brought out actual whipped cream, like real cream that was whipped by somebody, not some Cool Whip out the freezer. Sourdough toast - Not great but alright Hash browns - Pretty good (UPDATE: VERY hit or miss. Sometimes good, sometimes undercooked and shitty. Only $1 as a side though, so roll them dice) Coffee - 2.25 seems high for Folgers or whatever cheap stuff it is. But at least they keep it flowing freely. Put some half and half and sugar in and ehhh, whatevs. Steak lunch (4.99) - Slightly bigger (and less tough) strip than the breakfast steak. Fine for 5 bucks. Mash taters or fries on the side with soup, the chicken tortilla is really pretty good Open-faced turkey w/ mashed potatoes (5.99) - Not amazing but better than expected for 6 bucks. Turkey was at least lower-end fresh deli slice quality. Mashed potatoes were actual mashed potatoes as evidenced by actual potato chunks here and there. OK gravy. Cheeseburger w/ fries (5.99) - Not the best burger in Reno but not bad. Lotsa decent fries. No complaints for the price. Throw in some really nice and attentive servers (the cute lady on weekend mornings - Marita I think? - is like a model server, should be giving lessons somewhere) and you got 4 stars, why not. Even with beverage and 20% tip it'll be rare for a meal to come out to more than 10 bucks a head here, even the big steak and eggs plate. After discovering this restaurant it's become one of my go-to places to eat everytime I go to Reno. Good food and good value. I've tried the prime rib, steak, lobster, stroganoff, and patty melt and all were good. The building was a bit dated but don't let that deter you. Hell, I love it at this point as everything else is closed. I order a salad because I had been eating too much meat lately, it's alright. Nothing to write home about, but will prevent me from getting scurvy. Then came the $3.99 and ho, what value it was. A medium sized medium rare steak (cooked to order) with a heaping portion of hashbrowns, two eggs and 2 pieces of toast. OMFG! For $3.99!!! "Thevalue!!!" My price conscious self is instantly satisfied regardless of taste, but actually everything was not bad. I think this will be my go-to meal. This is one of the last hold outs of Reno when Reno was famous for being the "Biggest Little City in the World!" When I first moved to Reno in 91 (not 1891), Cal-Neva offered their breakfast special for 99 cents. As a UNR student, it was great! Back then, service was adequate and the food followed suit. Today, when you first walk in, you find the Top Deck restaurant about the same as it was. A bit depressing, dimly lit but now it no longer smells like cigarettes! Obviously, when you come here, you're not looking for a bright cheerful environment, you're here for cheap eats! Their steak and eggs and decent. Their oatmeal is decent. and, their service is, at minimum, decent! I really wish I could give it more stars, but, for the past several times I've been there, it's been only decent. ---------------- Bottom Line If you're downtown and need a quick breakfast in a non-crowded environment, the Top Deck will get you in and out quick and afterwards you will think, "You know, that was a decent meal. During our stay in Reno, we came here to eat at least once or twice every day. The food was pretty good and so was the service. As for the prices, it's the best in town. We stay at Circus Circus because of our kids but when it's time to eat, we prefer to drive over to the Top Deck for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I'm always looking for the best deals and the most I can get for my money, being that I'm the sole provider. This is "THE PLACE" to go eat on a tight budget. Our food was very good, and prices were exceptionally low. They bring you in. I was extremely impressed with the fact the food was as good as it was despite the prices. There really was no catch. -except service, our service was next to nothing. Our server didn't offer appetizers, desserts, or drinks... if she wanted to 'upsale' for a higher tip, or better customer service she failed terribly. It was embarrassing. She never even introduced herself. As a server myself I tip solely based on service. And this was the worst service I have experienced in a long time. It was so disappointing. Ok, this is not an awesome place in a not awesome casino. The Top Deck Restaurants is a couple flights up in the Cal-Neva Casino. You need to follow signs to find the place. There's no quick and easy way to get there, likely by design. Within moments of walking in, I noticed my knife had some crap on it, but I got another one. It looks like a rather generic not-updated-ever diner. This is, however, an awesome place for the price. Where else are you going to find a $2.99 breakfast between 11pm and 5am? Well, maybe somewhere else in Reno, but I haven't found it! I have absolutely no idea how the food is aside from the breakfast stuff. You can certainly order things other than the cheap breakfast items, I just decided to be cheap and the stuff looked (and tasted) good anyway. When I asked about the specials were I was told that there were no specials but that I could get anything on the menu 24/7. When I tasted them I was very disappointed ! They tasted like they were canned ! Why are they serving canned veggies with Prime Rib ??? The Prime Rib and potato were pretty good. I asked the server for a small bowl to put the veggies in and he brought one right away. I was about 3/4 of the way done with my meal and the server asked if he could close out my check ! I love greasy spoons and the Cal Neva's Top Deck Restaurant can totally be classified as one! In the several years I've been going to Reno, I've eaten at Top Deck a few times, mostly for breakfast or a late night dinner. During our recent venture up to Reno, we got the munchies around 2am and decided to eat here. Menu offerings are totally basic, just as you would expect from any greasy spoon but, as of our recent visit, they had some pretty awesome breakfast and lunch specials that were available 24-hours. The s/o ordered their 6oz Steak & Eggs which came with eggs, hash browns and toast. I had the Short Stack which came with eggs and three pieces of bacon or sausage. Both of our breakfasts were $4.99 each...what a freakin deal! Of course, you get what you pay for so, we weren't expecting a gourmet breakfast or anything but when our food came out and very quickly at that, both of our meals had generous portions and tasted great! Sure, the s/o's steak was far from USDA Prime but, it was a steak and for under $5! The service was okay, definitely wasn't blown away but any warm and fuzziness but at the same time, it's pretty expected of any restaurant open 24-hours not to mention, the poor soul who has to deal with the typical bitchy and cheap gamblers who lost their asses in the casino, are expecting to be treated like royalty, yet stiff the server on a tip. No, not talking about us, but there were definitely a few of them there while we were eating. Overall, I like Top Deck and although I'm not expecting a five-star culinary experience, I do know that I can get a good and cheap meal here anytime of day! read more

Best Little Coffee House in Reno This is one of my favorite places to go for good food that is very very well priced. Their specials , which range from breakfast to dinner is really good and the prices are amazing. It's not Ruby River ..but it's satisfying for the prices and way better then fast food. I usually get the Steak and eggs, which comes with a cooked to order juicy 6 ounce steak, two eggs any way you want, nice serving of hash browns and your choice of toast. for $4.99 . Other specials are just as good and regular menu is not only tasty but reasonably priced and portions are always nice. Food is served promptly and the service is good. It's family friendly and you can play Keno while you eat !! Can't cook those specials at home for the price they dish them up...recommend this to tourists and locals alike. It's not worth it. I should have know when the "steak" ordered not only was tough and slightly warmed, but also looked old tough and warmed. To keep it moist, it floated in the soup water provided by the heated canned corn kernels. How kind and considerate. A group of us popped in here after the Santa Crawl around 1:30 AM for some late night breakfast. Let me start by saying the food was a-ok, really solid diner offerings. I had the breakfast burrito and the rest of my crew downed the steak and eggs special ($4.99). Decent food. Decent price. So why only two stars? Because the service suuuuuuuucked. For starters, the place was mostly empty when we arrived, but we stood in line waiting to be seated for like 10-15 minutes. Why? I really have no clue. I think they were trying to figure out what to do with the party of 8 in front of us, but in an empty place that should not be that hard. Once we were seated, we all had waters in front of us promptly. We should have cherished that water as they would never be refilled. Our food took ages to come out and it came out in slap dash style (one dish, then 2-3 minutes, then two more, then another 5 until mine). Ridiculous. Meanwhile, the place as others started to filter in from the pub crawl, a HUGE line started to form at the entrance waiting to be seated. Although there was ample seating, the restaurant clearly had not prepared for this, and so were haphazardly seating a few groups at a time in those sections that were actually staffed. Weird. I can't imagine what was going on--it seemed like the staff was really confused and they spent a lot of time huddled up talking about what to do about the big crowd. Our waiter did make one more token appearance--to toss the bill on the table and dart off. No "how was your food" no offer of more water. He just fled. Weird. I might go back just because its convenient and cheap, but I might give serious thought to hitting the Nugget or Gold N Silver Inn next time. Much better service at those places. read more

Man. I really only came here because somebody told me that there were $3.99 Steak and Eggs joint and I thought they were full of shit. And then I saw the sign when I was going back to the bus stop. After that, I made a habit of staying around at the Cal Neva for some cheapo steak and eggs if I didn't want to go cook at home. Why only two stars? The food tastes horrible. In fact, everything on the menu that is NOT THE STEAK AND EGGS happens to be much better tasting, like the biscuits and gravy or a club sandwich. Like another reviewer said, the length of time that the steak appears to be cooked tends to either have it fully burnt up, or completely raw and bloody. And I ask for medium rare, every single time and its a 50/50 on whether or not its a charred slab, or a bloodied mess on my plate. The waiters and waitresses are really fucking old, and they take their sweet ass time when it comes to service. I actually walked up to the kitchen entrance one day after waiting for a good hour for my food to come, freaking out the kitchen staff. I don't give a shit, my waiter has been hiding behind that corridor for a good while and I wanted to let him know that I still have a order I wanted. The rest of the casino is what brought the score down to two stars. Cal Neva is definitely on its way out. It's one of those trashy bum casinos, with creepy crippled dudes looking at the bar waitresses. I remembered a scene with this crippled old guy kept macking on this waitress because of her shorts. As he was the ONLY purchasing customer in the entire bottom floor of the casino, the chick had no choice but to put up with him and make her damn tip money. I wish I can give it a one, but I keep feeling tempted to go back for some half assed $3.99 Steak and Eggs for some reason. This is a true diner complete with a wide variety of food including breakfast favorites, hamburger standards and sandwich must-haves. I ordered a Philly Cheese Steak with a side salad. All was good. The salad was the perfect size for a side. The Italian dressing was good and vinegar-y with little oil the way I like it. The sandwich was loaded with bell pepper, onion, mushrooms and cheese. Not to mention the meat. It could have used some seasoning salt or garlic salt. Maybe even some au jus. Besides that it was good. And for $10, it was hard to beat. And service was good too. My waitress took a while to get to me initially but in her defense she was working on a massive to-go order. She did come around and was very attentive after that. I was skeptical at first. I wouldn't advise the -Chicken Caesar wrap ($5.99). I was hesitant on ordering this because it was. the same price as the prime rib, but wanted to take it easy on my red meat consumption. I was happy to see they used romaine and not the house salad mix, but was sad that the chicken was dry, Caesar dressing was to light, and lack of croutons. The potato salad as the side was good, though. -Any kind of spaghetti ($5.99). The sauce is from a jar and a tad sweet for my liking...and the noodles are overcooked. Oh, the joy of cheap casino food! We came in here on a Saturday during both the River Festival and the Sculpture Festival and, to our surprise, were seated very quickly and all. As far as drinks, we both had water just because I think we both wanted to stay hydrated (it was a warm day). Now, onward to the food... I'm not going to call it gourmet because, quite frankly, that isn't what this place is about. I got the classic breakfast and everything was cooked nicely, although the eggs were a bit on the runny side. As far as my dining companion's food went, she got the Hangover. Talk about everything but the kitchen sink! It was pretty much ingredients piled on top of ingredients! She seemed to really enjoy it though, and the breakfast that I had was good as well. Portions are huge, but keep in mind that you are paying for quantity and not quality. Food isn't BAD by any means. But it's nothing that just stands out. If you don't mind a retro atmosphere and some greasy food, then Top Deck is your spot!
