The second-best donut in Modesto is hidden at this hole-in-the-wall shop. The cake donut is just a teeny bit crisp on the outside (so, different in style from Mr. T's) and fluffy on the inside. Selection is varied but not huge -- the strength seems to be in cake and old-fashioned donuts. On my visit, there were also apple fritters and three varieties of filled donuts. I did not see crullers or chocolate cake donuts. worse place EVER!!!! must of change owners . They mixed old chicken in their plates. I got food poisoning from eating this. I went to the emergency actually. The food is not fresh. I come here for lunch about once a week because it's cheap and quick. It's not glamorous but it fits a need for about 5 bucks. I get the #1 chicken bowl (but ask for steam rice). Comes with some steamed broccoli and carrots to make it a balanced heathy meal. On early work days, it has the best Apple Fritters in town!! Plus you can get the smaller ones for .50 cents. I always get donuts, fried rice, double chicken with veggies and steamed rice and it's always on point...their sauces are very good too. I don't know what happened but the egg rolls are way different than they used to be they are much bigger now and with different ingredients. They aren't all that great. Let me first off say that Armando is from Long Beach and has no idea what he's talking about. Might of caught these guys on a decent day. Armando is probably used to eating rats and mice so don't take his review as your only source of clairvoyance to this business. I've lived in EMPIRE (not Motown) for 23 years. I grew up eating at this joint. Back when it was the Penguin and Dairy Queen. Just a few months ago It recently changed it's store hours to only be open 12 hours instead of 24. Which took it's only flair away. The food sucks, it hasn't been good since they stopped serving their food in an actual bowl. Now its a common styrofoam plate. Here's the best part. They microwave the food they serve. They no longer serve food that has been freshly cooked. When you order your food stick around inside and you'll hear a microwave. The meat used in chicken bowls, beef bowls, and pork bowls are what me and my friends call mystery meat. We used to go as teenagers stoned and drunk over to the chicken joint to get donuts and coffee. While sitting outside on the wooden table bench the place was surrounded by cats jumping in and out of the dumpster. Now i'm not saying there's any correlation between the roaming felines and the mystery meat, but that was always the joke. The donuts are as expected from a tiny hut like that. Not bad but not good. I've found flies sometimes flying in and out of the donut display. The display is not the cleanest area either. Back to the microwave because i feel like this is what should keep people away. Microwaving foam in any case is completely unsanitary and unhealthy. Google why you shouldn't do that. It's very scary to think that these people might actually know the dangers of heating foam. The best place to get a teriyaki bowl is honestly Jack In the Box. I've heard about a place on Mchenry in Modesto that's pretty good, although i haven't heard more. Scotty's Donuts down the street is not any better than Tony's. It can be worse, they also microwave everything they serve. You can see the burn spots on the foam and it feels flimsy. Don't go there please. Teryaki King in Modesto recently closed due to cockroaches. I work in pest control and my uncle works in refrigeration, we both agree without being a racist bigot; Asian joints typically are the worst and most unsanitary places to eat. The service here is good, the lady at the counter was attentive and the other lady in the kitchen was polite. We came in still drunk from our Thanksgiving drinkfest the night before and needed coffee BAD! My brother orders 2 dozen donuts and I got the #13 which was chicken skewers with chow mein and veggies(no rice for this carb whore!) this small donut/Chinese food joint is a total hole in the wall but that's what makes it great. The coffee was good and piping hot, the decor was like a hoarder's wet dream. Walls covered with snapshots and food item pictures. Figurines and fake plants everywhere. There's always someone walking in there so you know they sell a lot of Chinese food and donuts! I was expecting to also get a mani/pedi and my drycleaning done. If you want a quick snack(10 minute wait) and some decent donuts in this shit town , this is the spot! They're open 24 hrs and there's a few tables and chairs where you can chill and watch tv while you wait for your food.
