My experience today at Tony's Breakfast was the worst customer service interaction I have ever encountered as a customer of any fast-food establishment in the Washington Metropolitan area.
I routinely order breakfast from Tony's Breakfast shop in route to my residence and the service is usually pleasant and helpful, however I doubt that I will ever visit this establishment again after the rude and condescending comments spewed upon me today by one of the owner's relatives working in the shop this afternoon. To make a horrible story short, a young man working at the front counter of Tony's Breakfast, claiming to be a relative of the owner, proceeded to quote me a price for my phone ordered meal that exceeded my expectations. I questioned the total amount of the order, as a regular customer who is familiar with the menu pricing, and the young man stated that there is an additional fee of $1 for turkey bacon and turkey sausage. I thanked him for the billing clarification and jokingly stated that I will start cooking my breakfast at home.
The young man quickly retorted, "that is the purpose for the price, you should cook at home". I was immediately shocked and appalled. In my shock, I asked him, so you don't want my business, you prefer that I not support your establishment and he reiterated the point of the high pricing was to encourage customers to cook at home. I realized that he was young and attempted to make the business connection for him that if all of Tony's Breakfast customers cooked at home then there would be no need for Tony's Breakfast and his family would be out of business. Eventually, he understood my comments but then stated that I took his comment out of context.
I called Tony's three times in the minutes following my departure from the fast-food establishment and each time this unidentifiable young man answered the phone with a nasty comment ruder than the previous one he spewed out at me. This unidentifiable young man (wore his hair in a pony-tail without a hair net (in accordance with DC Food and Food Operations Regulations 25 DCMR 502.1; FOOD CONTAMINATION PREVENTION HAIR RESTRAINTS, EFFECTIVENESS; DCMR 502.1 Food employees shall wear clean and effective hair restraints, such as hairnets or beard nets, if appropriate, and clothing that covers body hair that are designed and worn to effectively keep hair from contacting exposed food, clean equipment and utensils, linens, and unwrapped single-service and single-use articles. Hats, caps, scarves or other head covers are acceptable if the hair is contained to prevent contamination. Hair spray and tying back the hair in a ponytail are not effective hair restraints) and the sides and nape of his hair were cut short- Please let someone from the Department of Health read this), refused to divulge his name or identify himself by an employee number, (other than he was related to the owner and that he was therefore an owner by blood-clearly he has not pursued or attained his business degree and has misconstrued his possible inheritance with rightful ownership), he refused to divulge the owner's name (even after I advised him that the owner's name must be listed on the registered license that the license must be publicly and obviously displayed within the establishment), he refused to inform me when the actual owner's would be on the premises and he repeatedly asked why was I taking this so seriously and that my only recourse is to never visit Tony's Breakfast shop again. After much debate the unidentifiable family member told me that I was welcome to come and stand around Tony's until the actual owner's arrived. He never attempted to apologize for his comments or actions, instead he became belligerent and uncooperative.
So, since I cannot speak with the owners of Tony's Breakfast and attempt to resolve this just matter amicably between us, I am left with writing this comment...
