First off - they are tucked in the back of the lot behind the Starbucks! I had to call given that Google Maps only got me so far. I had to come in for the No Hide bones I knew they carried but it was so clean and well organized, I decided to grab a bag of dog food while I was at it! Staff was lovely, carried my bag around and out for me and made sure I got my "check-in" gift of 1lb of treats and told me about their awesome rewards program. Tomlinson's is a locally-owned feed supply store for pets and their owners. The now 60-year-old store was once a chick hatchery, then a livestock feed store (including poultry), then a wholesale bird store, then gradually a pet supplies and retail outlet - what it is today. I enjoyed the Tomlinson's "feel" - pleasant, friendly, Austin. I was impressed with the amount of stock dedicated to gerbils, hamsters and others in the rodent family. That's something you don't necessarily see all too often anymore. I also was thoroughly amused as I perused their selection of dog sweaters and bandannas...they rival Bark N Purr when it comes to fashion for your fur balls and felines. They also have a respectable supply of pet beds in varying shapes, styles and colors (although you'll pay a pretty penny for these.) Other than the aforementioned, they've got stuff for birds, fish, reptiles and "small animals". This particular store in Westbank Market on Bee Caves is tucked into the very corner of the shopping center and is hard to see at first glance. The staff is friendly and the supply is sufficient, but I was quite disappointed with their merchandise when it came to cat food and cat litter. Poor selection here. Other than my cat supply complaint, I support Tomlinson's and encourage you to check one out (four stores total). They offer a nice alternative to the more sterile Petco or Petsmart. However, a warning for those who take their dogs with them everywhere...they are more strict about bringing your pets indoors than a Petco will be. Tomlinson's is pretty terrific. read more

First of all, shop local! Tomlinson's looks like a high end pet store with overpriced stuff. Don't be fooled. They have significantly higher quality food than you'll ever find at the grocery, and you can afford it. 20 pound bag of dog food for $25-ish is a pretty good deal in my book, especially when the dog obviously likes it more than the $16 10 pound bag I had been buying at the HEB. They have a ton of treats, toys, leads, collars, harnesses. I looked for a poop scoop the other day and it didn't jump out at me. I wasn't looking that hard, and surely they had a small selection hidden somewhere. That will be the only disappointment is the selection. Food and treats, they have a lot. But when I went to buy a no-pull harness for the dog, it was one color, one brand, and one of the size I needed. Still didn't overpay though. read more

They saved my one our dogs about 4 years ago because we were serving her science diet and that is when we learned about by products and dogs cannot digest corn. This place rocks! It has all I need for my small backyard flock and my two kitties. While I'm there to pick up cat food or feed, scratch,corn,oyster shells, waters or feeders I also have a chance to pet a bunny, pick up a piglet or just watch the birds. They really have all you need for your yard birds, even antibiotics. I had many questions when I started with my chickens and they were more than happy to help me out. Blow off those other reviews from 2007 and 2008. This place is THE BEST. I shop at other pet stores around town, such as Bark N Purr, but the staff at Tomlinson's learned my dog's name before mine. They have always been 100% helpful and generous, often giving our pup samples and even letting him use the dry goods section as his buffet line! Special shout-out to Miles, who couldn't be more kind, honest or informed regarding all products and foods. And the "selling live animals" review? They adopt animals out of their store. I've been going there about once a week for the past year and have seen bunnies before, but no pigs or anything quite as exotic as that. The crazy cat lady in me loves this place. They've got a lot of gourmet and upscale cat food brands, such as Tiki Cat, that aren't sold at supermarkets or Petco/PetSmart. Their prices are a wee bit higher on some things than other stores (small bag of Worlds Best Cat Litter is $9.99 there, and $8.49 at Target), but not so inflated that it stops me from shopping there. The sales staff are always super friendly and welcoming, and have lots of great product recommendations. If you're a pet owner and you plan on shopping there regularly it's definitely worth it to join their loyalty club. It's less than $10/year, and you get 10% off everything, and an additional 4% off cases of food. It pays for itself really quickly. Bonus: If you check in on Yelp, you get either a free pound of dog treats, or a kitty boink toy. Yay! read more

Tomlinson's is great! We adopted a rabbit from one of their locations a few months ago and she has been the perfect companion. They carry a wide variety of treats and foods for small mammals that PetCo and PetSmart don't sell, so if you are looking for variety this is a great resource. Tip: The Purina bulk rabbit and guinea pig feed here is made at the same factory as Kaytee and the cheaper Oxbow varieties. They also carry lots of bulk dog treats, biscuits, bones, etc. It's about half the price of buying the same foods packaged. read more

We've been loyal customers of Tomlinson's since we adopted our baby Kingy in 2006. These guys are great! --Awesome selection of premium dog food, which is what we go there for. They know their products well and turned us on to Orijen for our babies. They're definitely a little bit more expensive than the national chains, but they have brands that you won't find in the chain stores and can make good recommendations to you based on what you need. --The staff are helpful & knowledgeable and will bring your purchases to your car for you. --They support local rescue groups and often have dogs and cats up for adoption in the store. The only thing I won't recommend is buying toys/leashes/harnesses/beds/etc. there. Definitely more expensive than the big box stores and they carry a lot of the same products. I am not so fond of this branch of Tomlinson's. The lady who was working the counter the first time I was there was overbearing, yet unhelpful. The difference between this store and the South Austin store is marked; there is no boutique of leopard print carriers and crystal collars at the south location, but there sure is here. Bleah. Loved this place... as soon as I walked in the door I was greeted and helped with making a crucial decision of which food to buy my dog! Very helpful and friendly staff. Lots of good selection for HEALTHY dog foods, and some of it is local! I ended up purchasing the one the store employee recommend, and my dogs absolutely loves it! I went to Tomlinsons tonight (it was about half past 7pm) and they weren't open, so I really didn't know what to do & so defeated- I decided to go to Randall's to get chx noodle soup & some cat food to tide me over for the night and there was a really nice guy named Jeff that was checking out right before me in line at Randall's and he was wearing a thomlinsons shirt and I said "man I was just there and I'm so sad y'all are closed" and he said "what do you need?" And I said cat food & he said okay I'll meet you over there!!! So I got cat food after all. Mia my kitty was with me and the check out guy and Jeff were petting her and stuff it was so great!! Thank you all for ALL that you do! My eight year old dog who has never had a flea problem in her life contracted them somehow in our apartment complex. I'm talking like MULTIPLE fleas and waking up with flea dirt everywhere. Talk about disgusting! Love Tomlinson's -- the store and the staff at Westlake are the best and we love bringing Riley here. Shame the same can't be said of the gentleman handling checking in for the dental cleaning service that is being offered through the store. Head down, buried in his phone, barely acknowledged us when we arrived. Immediately grabbed at our dog's Riley's collar and told her to sit and although she was clearly a little nervous of his rough approach she didn't bark or growl or show any aggression, she simply backed away from him. We tried to explain that she could be a little slow to warm up but would be fine with gentle handling (which is what we had been promised would be the case) but he seemed totally uninterested in that and told us that he wouldn't take for the cleaning. At this point I wouldn't have let him take Riley under any circumstances but what a huge disappointment and what a huge discredit this abrasive man is to Tomlinson's and to the Canine Dental Services company who are providing the anesthesia-free cleanings. Can only hope others have a better experience if bringing their dogs for this service. read more

The absolute best crew in town. Every time I walk in the door the staff - in particular Jeff - is super friendly and knowledgable. They not only know our poodle, Watson, they know my kid. Without fail they are willing to go the extra mile, whether it entails answering a bunch of pet food questions to letting my son hold whatever animal is in the door. They never seem bothered. I appreciate that they are willing to give me the facts about the products [food, treats, treatments], how it is made, whether it is worth the price, etc. I never feel like they are just trying to "sell me something." I buy at the Tomlinson's at Slaughter and Escarpment for my cats. Most retail pet food stores sell substandard animal feed. Tomlinson's sells excellent grade food, from Blue Wilderness to Indigo Gold. Quality food is their standard, not option. They also will gladly do special orders. read more
