I started going to this location, after becoming a loyal customer when living near their Airport location. This store isn't as good as that location, but I've no complaints. I never require help when shopping, so it doesn't bother me if the staff is helpful or not - they always are when I get to the cash register, and always help me out if I need it. I will say, the staff is way more helpful at their Airport location - they were always talking to me about food there. It pains to read people say, "I just go to Petco 'cuz it's cheaper." Buy into the club membership ($5/year) and you get 10% off any purchase - price-wise, it nearly works out to the same as big-box chains, and if it doesn't - oh well, that's the price I pay to support a local business. They have great bulk items - my dogs love the beef knee caps. Also, lately they've been carrying some homemade dog cookies and biscuits that my dogs go nuts over. They look so good; I've been tempted to try them. And they have a great return policy. I bought a very pricey Dog Silencer there, and after my dogs stopped responding to the noise after a few days, I returned it to Tomlinson's - no hassle at all. read more

Tomlinson's is awesome. I've gotten quite a few things for my pup Zelda here. The staff is very knowledgable about pet diets, hygienic products (such as ear cleaning pads), accessories, and toys. I bought Zelda a harness here and they taught me how to tighten it and its proper positioning on her body to avoid discomfort. They really know their stuff and have great customer service. They carry food brands chain stores don't, which are often healthier for your pet. The staff is happy to help you select one of these brands as well, they are highly familiar with pros and cons of each brand. They also sell birds they breed and raise themselves, hamsters and such, and a few other non-traditional pets. They have all necessary supplies for these pets as well. read more

Great place with lots of options for pet treats and food. My dog has a sensative stomach, so I went here to try and get him on some better food that he would be able to eat without issues. The people that work here were very helpful with explaining different foods and which ones I should try. Btw, I first tried amazon to get various high-quality brands of dog food. There is, indeed, a local alternative to the large chain pet store. While Tomlinson's does not offer grooming, a biscuit bar, and pet photography, they do stock everything from the cheapo pet food to the fancy and expensive kind - for dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, fish, and other small critters. In addition to food, they have toys, health maintenance products, and many other accessories. Unfortunately, the kids who work there seem even less knowledgeable about their items than the kids who work at the larger pet stores. (At least at this location.) Pet supplies for Texans since 1946. If you want to support a local business, then dog gone it, go shop there. read more

This is my go-to pet supply store now that I have a dog. The Pet Club discount is awesome and so worth it because I buy $45+ worth of food a month for the pooch+ 3 birds. And for review below by Dale B., Petsmart is much cheaper because they carry the crappy brands that are bad for your animals. I've been in here a few times now and I have a few bones to pick with them, pun intended. When I got my puppy he was having trouble with the food I had him on (Nutro) and I wanted to switch him to something better that wouldn't break the bank. I asked folks for recommendations of pet stores with a good dog food selection and a knowledgeable staff that PetsMart lacks, and they pointed me here. I couldn't tell you if the staff is knowledgeable or not, because none of them really spoke to me. I'm not good at approaching people, so I just wandered around reading bags for over half an hour. One man who looked like an owner or manager asked me if I was doing okay. I told him I was trying to decide what food to buy and he just nodded and walked away... wtf? Their product placement is awful. They need more space or something. Stacks and piles of food bags I understand, but they do the same with bowls and toys. When I come in, I always look at the stuff but never buy anything except the food because I don't want to dig through a bin of plushies to see if there's anything cute. Also, they have a membership that gets you a food discount, but they don't seem to want to sell it. My first two times in they asked if I had it, but didn't offer to tell me what it was. I had to ask the cashier the third time. Gee, I wish I would have known about that before. :/ I'll keep shopping here- I think they're the only game in town selling Taste of the Wild- but I wish they'd straighten up and make the store a bit less chaotic. read more

Tomlinson's is to animals is what Toys R Us is to kids or Spec's is to adults. Austin is truly lucky to have such a great pet store. I buy all of my dog food and dog treats here. The staff is way more knowledgeable and helpful than anyone you will find at a chain pet store and the prices are surprisingly reasonable. Tomlinson's REALLY needs to work on their customer service in all their locations (we've visited 3 separate locations). We've been in Tomlinson's around 6 times and we are NEVER acknowledged when we walk in the door. The first time we went in we were in the store for 20 minutes without being greeted- and they weren't busy at all. There was one or two other people in the store besides us. They do seem to be helpful if you ask them a question, but it would be nice to be acknowledged when walking in the door instead of completely ignored. However, I like their selection of high quality dog food and for what we buy its $4 dollars cheaper for a 5 lb bag then the other places in town where we've bought ($10 vs $14). Its great to be able to get a reasonable price on the dog's food and still be able to support a local company. read more

I go here for all my puppy needs. When we adopted our last dog, Rabbit, we decided to start feeding our dogs corn free food. The people at Tomlinson's were able to answer all of our questions and ever since then we have come to them with all our pet needs. I enjoy their pet food club because it saves me money. Poor customer service - I will not return. I have purchased dog food for my 3 large dogs for about 4 years. With the $5 pet club membership, the 10% off really makes a difference. The price of the dog food was the cheapest I could get for very high quality food. The problems: They don't greet you when you enter. They are usually out of the dog food I want. They were out of it 4 of the last 6 times I went by. They charged me for my pet club twice in the last 2 months and won't return my money (I guess they didn't record it the last time I bought it). My gripes, so maybe the owner will take notice: Yesterday when I went to purchase 3 bags of food (about $150 for one month worth of food), they had one bag on the shelf - keep in mind this is large breed dog food, the dogs eat a lot! I took it to the counter and asked if they had more... "nope". I looked behind the counter and saw 2 bags sitting there. They may have been put on hold for someone, but the clerk could've said so, rather than just saying "nope". Each time they are out of the food, I ask if they are getting it and they said they get deliveries on Thursdays. I was there on a Friday and there was only one bag for sale! I'm done with you Tomlinsons. By the time I drive to your store multiple times because you are out of stock, I could save more money just stopping by Bark n Purr, where the workers are so friendly and helpful, and they always have the food I need in stock. read more

As cat and new puppy owners, having a store of this quality so close to our house is an amazing find. The staff is so knowledgeable, and as everyone else has mentioned, they are very friendly. The store only carries high quality products which come at a cost but we feel worth it for our four legged friends. These days its so easy to use Amazon and other online retailers to buy all the things you need and usually at a cheaper rate. We were relieved to find that prices as reasonable enough that we can happily support a local business, especially one that is so dedicated to quality and service. read more

I'm a big fan mostly because of the morals behind the store and the membership, which is totally worth buying into. You'll receive discounts on food, and if your dog doesn't like the food you can exchange the bag as long as it's over half full. Then they'll donate the opened bag to a shelter. Love Tomlinson's!! It is great to have a natural pet food store so close to home (and one that is locally owned). The truth of the matter is that quality pet food rarely can be purchased at a grocery store or Petsmart!! The reason being that most food sold at these locations is primarily grain and not meat. Animals, especially cats, need meat not grain. I came to Tomlinsons seeking out Evo and they do carry it plus other great brands. Recently I have switched my animals to Wellness which costs an arm and a leg but is worth it. If you join the Pet Club for $5.00 a year you get discounts on every bag of food you purchase plus coupons in the mail for more food discount and toys. The store in this location is pretty cramped. Sometimes it takes prodding to get help from the staff but most of the ones I have dealt with are pretty knowledgeable. The selection is great as they carry just about everything. Love their frozen raw food for our cats and that they have a generous selection with good prices. Clerks are always super helpful as well. I found a really good brand dog food for 20 bucks a bag, as opposed to 26 at petsmart, so I go to Tomlinson's now. Most everything else in the store is way over priced for me including the dog toys and accessories. Every now and then you can get a good deal on treats or some other discount to offset the otherwise enormous prices. People that work there are very nice. bottom line: great dog food prices, everything else is high, but look for things on discount because they usually have a handfull of things on sale to make it a better deal. Keep in mind though, this store has very high quality stuff, including the dog food. You won't find any "bad" cheap dog food like what grocery stores or even petsmart carries. read more

The store is much smaller than a PetCo or similar, so they do carry a more modest selection, but what they do have in stock is very high quality. Admittedly you will be paying a little more, but I've never felt like it wasn't worth it. I have recently started going to Tomlinson's for my pup's food. I have a Great Dane with a funny stomach and was recommended to Taste of the Wild dog food. With the membership's 10% off Tomlinson's has the lowest price that I've seen on this dog food. I typically only buy my dog food here, generally think that other items they have are a little pricey. They have a lot of specialty treats and foods for your animals if you're into the grain free or organic stuff. I have a backyard chicken and this is one of the only local places that carries her food in small bin rather than a gross ton. The store has a huge selection for all sorts of animals especially things you won't find in Big Box stores. I joined the feed club for my pets and it's already paid off. I recommend it especially if you have a variety of pets. I'll agree with several posters on Tomlinson's customer service. There is quite a bit of room for improvement. Sometimes I'll go in when their friendly and helpful, sometimes I get moody and sullen, sometimes I get distant and apathetic. I'm not a fan of the last two mood spectrums. Employees don't have to be gooey-sweet, but a consistent greeting and "how can I help you" would go a long way to improve the store's image. read more

I've been here a couple of times. The first time I was surrounded by yuppies and luckily I didn't have to witness a hipster lingering around.lol! However being the person that I am I see a lot of folks stating "local" all the damned time. Lets keep it "local". As I was in the store the first time I was talking to a guy wearing a bandana...he was pretty cool.He asked what we were looking for. I told him I was pretty much looking for crickets. I got two boxes of medium sized crickets and for a FEED & PET store that's how they carried them?! So where's the damn container full of live crickets we can actually choose from? I took the two boxes home.The first box just had nothing but dead crickets making me think that they were just waiting inside to come out...EVENTUALLY....Well eventually I realized there were only 10 crickets alive in this damned box. I took out the other box and it seemed like 10 crickets were dead in it and the remaining were alive! lol! I get a better deal at petsmart and better customer service. I bring this up because of the fact that the second time around I was pretty much waiting...and waiting....and waiting to get some one to help me with purchasing an alternative...they were out of meal worms and this time which was the last time,I decided to buy the one and only box that had actual living crickets. I won't forget how assertive and how much effort I had to pull one employee toward my direction. "HEY! I NEED ONE BOX OF CRICKETS!" in a polite manner I tried to project my voice. Maybe next time I'll bring my beardie on my shoulder to show off how cute he is and feel oh so cute and giddy about it...and then have an excuse to execute small talk about things that aren't even that interesting to begin with? We've been in search for a specific cotton braided collar for our boxer, but have had no success tracking one down. We were recently in the neighborhood and decided to swing in to see if they might have one. Unfortunately they didn't however they do have a decent selection of collars and were friendly enough. Their prices are a tad high, however as most Yelper's I prefer to shop local and am OK paying a few bucks more to do so. It seems the majority of the store is stocked with dog food (however they don't carry our particular brand) with a good selection of bulk treats as well. read more

I came here after one pet store didn't open when the store hours say so. I called Tomlinson's and asked if they had any bird food. They did but it was a small section. I just needed some basics. I've been bird sitting for the longest time so I had to try to make my temporary pet comfortable. I actually got some good stuff. I had a chance to walk around and they seemed to have a decent amount of supplies for each kind of pet. It is a small store located next to Target.
