Their food is eh at best and the service is notably bad. The side salad "greens" are usually about 1/4 rotten. You see that they mix the new greens with the old and that leads to lettuce that is wilted to the point of being squishy and black. From experience this happens in my fridge after about a week. Recently I made a to go order of 2 paninis and a pie with extra side salad instead of a side bread. What I got was a pile of meat and cheese sitting on top on their "greens." I called them and told them that I intended them to not give us the side bread, (a rosemary biscuit with too much butter,) instead of giving us sandwiches without bread! I was told that they call their side bread a "scone," and that it was my faut for not specifying "scones." I've baked British style currant scones and American style cherry scones but I can't come up with how this rosemary heavy dense bread has anything to do with a scone. I was told that a 50%off credit was retroactively put on my credit charge and will be checking my bill, I will notate if they do not do this. read more

Today, January 25, 2024, I had my second breakfast experience at Tomato Pie Cafe located in Lititz PA. In my first experience at Tomato Pie Cafe, back in December 2023, I had one of the most satisfying and delicious breakfasts ever. I sat at the counter/bar on both occasions. I am a 74 year old retiree. On my first experience at Tomato Pie Cafe, after getting into my breakfast, I told the server behind the counter that my pretzel bun bacon, egg & cheese sandwich, along with the breakfast potatoes and the coffee, were among the best I had ever had - no exaggeration - and I am a breakfast potato aficionado..!! So, I was excited on this visit to see if Tomato Pie could do at least as well as I had experienced on my first visit. But they did not. When I entered the restaurant around 9:30 AM on Thursday, January 25, 2024, there were about 8 seated customers, not including me. All four large tables in the center of the main area at the counter were empty. I again chose to sit at the counter and informed the receptionist of my intent. As soon as I was seated on a round stool at the counter, I removed my heavy coat and placed it on the back of a chair at an empty table - literally just behind me, and proceeded to look at the menu. One of the women who were milling around at a table by the cash register, apparently preparing silverware for serving, came over to me and said (words to the effect of) "May I move your coat to a stool as we may need to use that table." I was extremely irritated at that request since all four large tables in the center of that area were vacant, but I said "Fine - if that is what you need to do." The lady seemed to not appreciate my attitude and moved my heavy winter coat to the empty stool beside me to my left. I silently wondered what would happen if someone wanted to use that stool...?? I turned my attention back to the menu, and immediately I sensed that my jacket had fallen on the floor. I decided to leave it there until one of the staff noticed that it had fallen onto the floor. As a note, my coat remained on the floor for at least 5 minutes before one of the women came over and picked it up and gingerly laid it, once again, across the same (empty) stool. On this visit, the French Toast caught my eye. However, when I asked the man behind the counter if the only sausage they had was the chicken feta sausage I saw on the menu. He informed me that they also had pork sausage. I immediately placed my order with the man for the French Toast with pork sausage. I was absolutely shocked when my plate was set before me on the counter, when I saw that the "pork sausage" was not in a link, not in a patty, but the pork sausage had been placed on my plate completely broken down into loose ground meat. Yes - I had to eat my sausage with a spoon..!! It reminded me of, and looked exactly like, hamburger waiting to be put into a taco, or made into sloppy Joe. This is a fine example of something you should just leave alone and not be trying to do some stupid "modern" presentation that just doesn't make sense - to anyone. Yes - never in my life had I been served loose pork sausage as breakfast meat, and I am totally offended by this presentation. My burning question was why??? When I asked for the manager, I told her of my experience, beginning with not being "allowed" to hang my coat on the back of an unused chair at an unused table. Her first response, pretty arrogantly I might add in my opinion, informed me that there were hooks under the counter right at my knees to hang my coat. As I groped under the counter at my knees to find hidden hooks in that location, my next question to the manger was "Then why would one of her employees not only not inform me of the coat hooks, which I did not notice, but place my coat on a stool, not once but twice...!!! I just don't understand. In our current "climate" why would you or your staff seemingly work to drive a customer away rather than be accommodating and welcoming to a customer. Wouldn't it have been better to leave my coat in the unused chair at the unused table until an actual customer appeared who actually was to be seated at that table? There were 4 empty 4 seat tables after all. With every center table in that area unoccupied, the response of your staff was unwarranted, made no sense to me, and was extremely inconsiderate. This is what I identify as a staff with rigid training and no capability to think outside "the box" To the manager's credit, she did not charge me for the loose sausage. BTW - the remainder of my breakfast order, the French toast & coffee, were excellent. I wrote this message - not to collect a "coupon" or something toward food at Tomato Pie Cafe, but in hopes that they can improve their staff's response to customers and their concerns. It was our second time at this restaurant and had a scary experience yesterday. If you have allergies, I would avoid this place. When our waitress took our orders, I made sure to specify my daughter's allergies. She appeared to jot something down on her pad, so I thought she was listening carefully. A second waitress followed up with questions about my daughter's order but only regarding one allergen. When our food came, there were already a few small mistakes. This should've alerted us that out first waitress was careless and negligent. I started to feed my daughter the chia pudding and as I got to the middle of it, I noticed there was another ingredient, so my husband and I tasted it before giving it to her. It was peanut butter and there was about a tablespoon of it as I continued to scoop it out. We were fortunate that she isn't severely allergic to it and can tolerate trace amounts. Otherwise, it would've triggered an anaphylactic reaction, which is life-threatening. We will never return to this place. read more

Firstly, I used to come here when I lived here with my sister so maybe it was the memory that was good and sweet. We used to order the sweet potato marscapone sandwich which they no longer have. I drove by with my husband and I pointed out this place "oh my gosh they have some good paninis and this amazing espresso milkshake". And he suggested we stop by and get it to go. seeing the that they no longer had some items and added a lot more new items, I stuck to another old reminiscent item: pesto chicken panini with that espresso milkshake. I called it in and we drove to park. I paid upon parking and here begins the chains of disappointment : For one sandwich and milkshake we waited OVER 20 min. I saw a few tables outside and another lady before me waiting for her to go order so I thought 10-15 min was reasonable. After almost it being half hour I put some pressure on the hostess who then just told me they had a large order. Wish they told me on the phone... After a long time waiting outside in the heat, a gal came to bring us a bag. She rushed back inside before I even took a look inside the bag- with no milkshake. So I went back in and they pulled it out from a mini fridge under the cashier- the milkshake must have been made right when the order was out in because the memory and definition of a thick, rich milkshake was run down and water at the top. I was livid and wanted to just get on with my day. Once returning to the car, my husband told me they missed utensils- for the greens salad which I glanced at : a handful of leaves. No onions, carrots, or anything. What a total rip off. Finally we drove off. The panini was not what it used to be in terms of quality. The ciabatta wasn't impressive, the mozzarella cheese wasn't melted at all and the chicken wasn't as juicy with little vegetables- like a slice of sautéed onion. No tomato. Here's the worst part: After all that disappointment, my husband out of nowhere said "oh no" and slammed the brakes pulled over and opened the door to spit his food out. I was almost done and I looked over wide-eyed. He pulled out a piece of hair out of his mouth. He was almost done with his sandwich as well. We both looked at my hands: but my hair was tied and no hair ties around my wrists. I didn't even touch his sandwich because I was getting the utensils while he had already opened the to-go box. Note: we didn't touch the salad. Husbands pet peeve and one thing he can't stand. He drove us back silently to the cafe again. I'm not sure what he said but in a matter of MINUTES like literally less than 5 MINUTES he came back with a new panini. No salad. Great ambiance and incredible service. The food was superb and well plated. I am not sure why we were seated upstairs when the downstairs was empty. I did like the downstairs better - it was well lite. The upstairs was a bit dark and I felt isolated. Yet, overall it was ok upstairs. The food was plated artfully. Very visually appealing. Left hungry.... Food was ok and fresh but the portions were insanely small my sister and I got a grain bowl that felt like a snack, it was like a handful of rice and some vegetables. My mom got a 1/2 wrap and 1/2 salad that looked decently filling though. My grandmother ordered a 1/2 salad but was brought a soup waitress didn't offer to swap it... and btw we asked to make sure they could accommodate us as it was about an hour/45 mins before they were closing, they seemed fine about it but once we were sat the waitress was so sour it felt like we were bothering her and it just stressed me out that she was so unfriendly. We made sure to smile even when they were out of the ice tea we ordered, we're understanding people. But I guess they don't like when more than four people in a group come in even though we were more than happy to split up and sit at different tables.. The guy behind the bar making the drinks was nice... but I wish we went somewhere else. So hyped to visit this restaurant, especially after reading all these great reviews. The menu was a unique read - so many interesting options, unsure on what to order, other than the must touted tomato pie. Thought the tables were on the smallish side and the seating, jam-packed. As food arrived to our table, condiments were removed and placed to the right of my bench (per suggested by our waitress). Good advice! I didn't care for their rendition of a tomato pie - mealy tomato slices, a sprinkle of oregano? encased in several layers of cheese, nothing melty, rather crumbly and coarse. Nope, not for me. I ordered a take two of grilled cheese and a side salad. My side salad consisted of leaves of curly kale, a shard or two of carrots and maybe three sliced cherry tomatoes. The cilantro lime salad dressing (even when mixed) was overly oily, lacking the freshness and punch I was anticipating from such lively ingredients and my melted sandwich, wasn't even melted. My husband was so excited to see carrot fries on the menu, but they too turned out in being inedible - limp, overly oiled, unevenly baked. So disappointed! Servers are very kind. But this place is so cramped and there aren't enough employees for the dinner rush. This place has its charm, but the tables are way too close and the sound can be deafening. Go at off-beat times or bring earplugs. I have had half good and half bad experiences here. Unfortunately, my husband is always there when the food is sub-par and the service is slow. Their lattes are pretty good, chai is 5/5. I enjoy their salads. And their Olio olive oil/vinaigrette is so good. We've always had friendly servers. The baked goods look tempting and the herb bread/scone served with my salad was delightful. But depending on how busy they are, you might get super slow service. We have gotten our food after 25 minutes of waiting for a panini with chips and a salad. I had to wait 15 minutes for my latte and we had to remind our server that my husband ordered a coke after 10 minutes. Also, I specifically came for the salad with blue cheese and pears with grilled salmon. They no longer offered the salmon, so I asked if the chicken was real grilled chicken or processed. I was assured the chicken was prepared fresh, in-house. (I don't know if the server understood what I meant). So, I requested the chicken on the salad. It was pinkish hue/fake/processed and soooo salty. I had my husband try a piece. He spit it out, and he's not that picky. I had to pick out every piece. His fancy ham and Brie panini was boring he said. Overall we were there for over an hour, the food was below standard, the room was loud. Hi Tomato Pie Cafe....this 5 star review is for your awesome place,food and staff! But when my Wife and I were there 10/8/23 around 10-30 until noon we witnessed a beast behind the counter. We had a 2 top to the side of the coffee bar area and saw action going on. This guy was getting slammed with full ticket rack after rack of drinks and he was banging it out. He deserves every penny he is getting paid and more. And was delivering the drinks inside and out as well. Jenni and I were in Lititz, PA in mid August and went to Tomato Pie Cafe. We had never tried a Tomato Pie, so we were really excited to try it. WOW!! It was delicious!! The pastry shell was so tender and melted in your mouth. The tomato filling was very fresh and delicate. Each bite was very pleasing to the taste buds. We also tried the Curry Chicken Salad. It was full of flavor, but not overwhelming. It was a perfect salad to enjoy on a summer afternoon. We also had the opportunity to try the Smokey Red Beet Burger. I am a meat eater, but the texture and taste of this burger was really good. If you are a no meat eater or want to try something a healthy alternative to a regular burger you should really give this a try. We ended our lunch with a Strawberry Shortcake Dreamcake. It was rich in strawberry flavor. It was just a perfect ending to a delicious meal. Besides enjoying our lunch, we also enjoyed the historic charm of the decor. Due to COVID, seating was limited inside, but they did have patio seating available. If you are in or around Lititz, PA, you really need to make sure to stop in at Tomato Pie Cafe. I am sure anything you pick to eat will be delicious, but I would highly recommend that you get a Tomato Pie (simply amazing!). read more

Food looks good but lacking service for outdoor. Expect us to order inside and take food outside. Don't bother if u have dog. Not dog friendly at all. They should be thankful we didn't bring our service dog indoor. Not too pleased attitude though. U would think they would be more accommodating for we sacrifice not bringing dog indoor. This is the best place ever. Great coffees and teas, one of the few places in Central PA that offers grits in some form. Everything I've had (breakfast and lunch) has been scrumptious. Went to the Tomato Pie Cafe this past Saturday for lunch. There was no staff standing outside to help with a table. We walked inside and were greeted by a not so nice cashier who told us to go back outside and wait for staff. We waited for a good 10 minutes and then left because no one returned to the outside station. I have been to the cafe before and have always had a good experience, but not this time. I had the Monte Cristo and it is awesome. The sweet savory balance was on point with the play between the ham and the pepper maple syrup.

We liked the food. But I feel compelled to write a review based on the horrible service we received from someone we determined to be a manager. We were a party of 9 and called a month in advance to get reservations for a weekday morning as we were celebrating a Muslim holiday together as a family. We had 4 children with us, 2,3,6 and 8. They separated us and sat us at two different tables that were 4-5 feet apart from eachother. The entire patio was empty and they made no effort to move any tables together or seat us at smaller tables that were closer together, or inside. Again, Most of the restaurant was empty and we had reservations where they assured me we would be accommodated. We sat down and got menus. And I asked how we were supposed to help my toddlers eat, etc. the manager came over and told me we were welcome to leave. Omg. My family stayed and politely ate our food and left. So here is the impression we had. We felt discriminated against because of how we looked, how we dressed, and how different we were. There are so many lovely places to eat in the Lancaster area so I encourage you to spend your money at an establishment where the discrimination isn't as blatant. read more
