    Scallops wrapped with Salmon
    Jennifer D.

Friday night, my family walked in and saw it was a bit empty. Already was giving red flags. I've been living in pasadena my whole live and I've never been here. This is a first time we were here. There are two areas: one for the grill where the cook in front of you, and another where it is standard dining. We went for standard dining. To start: [[HIGHLIGHT]]Ambiance: 1/10 - Depressing. Bland. Simple. Nothing more.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Service: 8/10 -it was okay. Unfortunately forgot the guys name but he did his job as normal. Nothing to complain about him. The hostest at the front was nice as well. Food: 1/10. Atrocious. I've had better japanese food else where and I gave this place a shot and I've never felt so digusted. Chirashi Bowl: 4/10 - the fish ok ish. But one piece was very fishy and another had a weird taste. The salad inside the bowl was unnecessary because it did not go with the Sashimi & Rice. The bowl came with miso soup and a set salad. (Next comment) the rice was good sticky rice. Nice and warm and compliments with the fish. "Miso Soup" : 1/10 - just looking at it we were like what is this?? It's not even miso soup. It's like clear broth with super thing mushrooms and some green onions. We all know what kiso soup is and THIS IS NOT miso soup. Mini Salad: 1/10 - bitter and wilted piece of lettuce. And the dressing is like a citrus sesame? But honestly I don't even know what it is. That didn't bother telling us what dressing it is. It made the salad super watery too. Unpleasant. Scallop Salmon Wrap: 1/10 - came with rice that was dry and hard. Inedible. The Salmon was over cooked and dry. It tasted bland. Veggies Tempura (no photo): 7/10 - it's not the best we've had, but after comparing to everything we've ate, it was so much better. It came with a good amount of tempura. I do noticed there was more squash pieces of tempura compared to having better veggies options like other places have. Ie: this has more variant sweet potatos. Garlic Edamame: 7/10 : Came in a standard size bowl. It was over cook/mushy. Some pieces were good, and other pieces were bad. The garlic flavor was nice though. Price for this whole entire meal: $107 with tip. Literally 4 things cost this much is ridiculous. I've been to other Japanese resturants where i got more bang out of my buck and paid around the same price or even less. This pricing does not live up to its par of quality in food. It is such a disgrace of calling this Japanese food. Never coming back again. I'm just happy to try it. Note: Food is Horrendous. It is not our servers fault that the food was bad. He even saw how much left overs there were and was like "oh is the food okay?" I had to say "yeah it's fine". Update: my husband and I got food poisoning and was vomiting hours later after dinner.

BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE! Really really bad! Really rude server (Miguel)and receptionist! What's the problem with these people. We are just starving that's why we didn't leave! What is Management doing about it?! The food is horrible. The only nice thing today was when we paid the bill- Sarah was nice! But that's it! Not coming back!

Recently we celebrated a birthday with 13 of us, at Tokyo Wako Pasadena, and it was nothing short of a disaster. While the price wasn't bad, the service (Miguel) was absolutely atrocious. From the moment we sat down, it was clear that the staff had zero respect for us. They kept glaring at us like we were doing something wrong, probably because we were a younger group. The chef couldn't even get a simple order right after repeating it! Completely butchered the steak orders. Three filet mignons were all cooked medium, even though we ordered one medium and two medium-rare and they all went to the 3 on the right in a roll,But somehow he even put steak to the person that ordered Salmon. And to top it off, he gave my filet mignon to someone who ordered a medium-well ribeye. Are you kidding me? No apology, than at the end everyone got their food and someone got mine and that person steak was still on the grill than he says I have an extra steak if anyone wants more. Like no it's not Extra!! It was just an attempt to play it off like it didn't happen. Completely unprofessional! When it came time to pay the bill, the situation got even worse. The staff hovered around us like we were criminals, giving us uncomfortable stares as if we were going to dine and dash. We decided to pay in cash as a group, but that seemed to trigger even more suspicion. They started speaking in another language, and it was blatantly obvious they were talking about us. It was downright disrespectful. [[HIGHLIGHT]]This was my first time at Tokyo Wako Pasadena, and it will be my last. The place was practically empty when we arrived, and now I understand why.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They had every opportunity to make things right, and they didn't. Do yourself a favor - skip this place and head to a Korean BBQ where you'll actually get your money's worth. This restaurant deserves to fail. **Avoid this place like the plague!**

My first visit to this restaurant, and I ordered way too much food, but everything was excellent. Started with the vegetable tempura appetizer and order the Chitrashi sushi for my entrée. Both items were prepared perfectly. The tempura was excellent: crisp, warm and delicious. The sushi was very flavorful and fresh and I realize it's been too long since I've had sushi! Recommend both of these dishes

My friend and I shared the following dishes: -Carlos Jewel Box: My favorite dish here. I just loved the variety. Sashimi and fried seafood on a bed of fluffy and seasoned rice. Also a nice umami kick from the ikura. The sashimi was tasty and standard, but I really enjoyed the fried seafood bites. The tempura batter was great and the seafood was nice and plump. -Tendon Combo with Cold Udon: Same notes for the tempura here, the batter was great and the tempura here is on another level. I also liked the half boiled egg and breaking the yolk into the rice, so delicious! The cold udon dipping noodles were also tasty and refreshing. Great for hot weather. I enjoyed the texture of the noodles. The value of each set was pretty good for what it was and the food was good quality. This restaurant is located in a cute alleyway with good outdoor ambiance. Got the…read moresalmon yuzu miso onigiri and it hit that perfect balance of citrusy and savory -- rice was warm and seasoned just right, not that cold sad rice you get elsewhere. Also grabbed a spicy tuna hand roll and the seaweed was crisp, not chewy or stale like some grab-and-go sushi spots. Everything's made to order so it takes a few minutes, but it's worth the wait for the freshness. Portions are fair for the price and the whole menu is easy to customize if you're picky about fillings. Great grab-and-go option if you're in the area and want something quick but still feels a step above typical fast casual. Would definitely come back to try the baked lobster shrimp hand roll next time.

6/24/2026 3 1/2…read moreStars SALMON YUZU ONIGIRI Salmon did not taste fishy and it was not dry, it was done well. The rice was slightly hotter than luke warm. Barely any yuzu flavor, which was disappointing. Salmon needs to be salted a bit more. The nori wasn't crispy, however, it wasn't oily. Onigiri was mild in flavor overall. This was decent, but it wasn't addicting. Onigiri was a good size. If you're hungry, ordering two to three onigiris would suffice. BEEF SUKIYAKI ONIGIRI This did taste like beef sukiyaki. Could taste the sauteed onions too. But this also needed more flavor, more salt. The nori wasn't crispy, however, it wasn't oily. I enjoyed this more than the Salmon Yuzu. BAKED LOBSTER SHRIMP HANDROLL Ordered the wrong one. I thought this would be spicy. But they later told me they only have baked, not spicy for the lobster shrimp handroll. Only the onigiri is spicy and there's a spicy tuna for the handroll too. The handroll was underseasoned and it was just plain baked lobster and shrimp with rice. If you eat it with soy sauce and wasabi it might help a bit, but still so disappointed that no one told me this was not a spicy handroll! LYCHEE LEMONADE This was a bit sweet, but it tasted like lychee and lemonade. A good balance. It had real lychee in it too, which I appreciate. This was good! AMBIANCE + SEATS & TABLES The ambiance was very casual. As soon as you enter, you see the wooden and metal tables and chairs. Small tables for 2, table for 4, a bar seat table in the center and in the back. More smaller tables than large. It was comfortable to sit in. Tables are close together. Two unisex bathrooms toward the entrance. Bathroom was clean. CUSTOMER SERVICE It was good. Person taking my order was nice. But he did not do a good job at explaining everything when I asked about the hand roll I was ordering. I guess misunderstandings can happen. Overall, it was an underwhelming experience at Rice & Nori. Not sure if I would return. Have had better onigiris at Japanese supermarkets.

We ordered the spicy edamame to hold us over til the main dishes arrived. It was delicious, with a mild heat and lots of garlic. We also had the cheese katsu curry and menchi katsu curry. The katsus are worth the 20 min wait. The cheese katsu was oozing with thick melted cheese and gave some very satisfying cheese pulls with every bite. The menchi katsu was a generous size and was perfectly crisp. Both orders were cooked perfectly and not oily. The curry had a steady mild heat and a slightly sweet undertone, but it was missing whatever provides that umami flavor I love in Japanese curry. Maybe it needed some garlic? I'm not sure. I'm still pining for the curry from Curry House in little Tokyo, which was suddenly bought out and shut down a while ago. Nonetheless, we had a pleasant experience at Katsu Jin. I came back for the chicken katsu curry. I got take out. It was piping hot and delicious when I got home 20 min later. Highly recommend this dish! The katsu is perfect. I had planned to be phone-free for the hour, but curiosity bested me and I whipped out my phone for a scan. The bulgogi with rice and miso called to me, strangely, considering the heat outside. The atmosphere at this slow hour was so nice I almost wished it was raining. A few Clairo and The Marías songs later (at the perfect volume--audible, but still low enough to have a quiet chat) my miso soup arrived. Now, it's been a good few years since I've had miso soup, and I've never really been crazy about it, but this... this was some damn good soup. Liquid umami. Then the bulgogi and rice came. This is the best bulgogi I've ever had. So tender. Quite literally melted in my mouth. Punches of savory juice, tender fatty bits, golden brown perfectly caramelized onions, and a sweetness to bring it all together. Every bite was perfect. It washed over me and my shoulders and spine practically uncoiled themselves. I want to try more from the menu but... I'm... I'm going to need this again. Like tomorrow. I should say, especially for the price, this is a lot o' grub. A perfect filling portion, especially with the rice and soup. I had a smoothie a couple hours earlier so I really should've asked for a to-go box 80% of the way through... but I was just having too much fun stuffing my face to stop. To recap--lovely service, great music, and food to live for. And a restroom. It's not public, but they do have a restroom. Thank god for that restroom. I was hungry, yes, but more than anything I really needed that restroom.
