Might i say Tokyo garden is guilty of profiling? My husband and i are tatted and eccentric looking, the first time we came here he ordered a beer and i didn't. We are both 23. His license had expired literally one day before and the waitress refused to serve him. We said okay understandable. But the whole rest of the night her whole vibe made me so uncomfortable, I couldnt tell if she was scared of us, suspicious or wanted us to leave but she made me feel like i was a tweaker, did she think we weren't going to pay or something? Grimy fake niceness with a fake smile. That goes for a few of the waitstaff workers. The waitresses also notoriusly disappear without a trace to the back right after your food is served. Waited literally 20 minutes till she came back so we could tell her she actually effed up our order. Food is delicious. The older waitress lady has to be one of the worst I've ever had. She's not the owner older Asian woman but another older lady, I think Latina. She is super rude and impatient. Not to mention she doesn't smile or check on anybody. The food here is hit or miss. Sometimes I go here and it's really good and makes me want to come back and then I go back and I'm disappointed. They could really use work on their sushi rice. It's not got a lot of flavor and it's usually not cooked right. Also sometimes the fish is a little chewy. It's not very clean when you look behind the sushi bar, honestly I looked over it last time I ate there and there was someone's lunch, a few fountain drinks with straws in them, a lot of crumbs and trash, and then some prepped premade shrimp tempura and something else I couldn't recognize. The young sushi guys are cool enough the older sushi guy is cool too. The older Asian owners I'm assuming are very nice and respectful. The young crew that works there is awesome, It's just that Latina older one that is really hard to handle as a customer. Also the cleanliness could Be better. The top of the sushi bar is cluttered and your inundated with 2 huge screens but You can't watch them without staring directly at the sushi chefs head so it makes it a bit awkward. read more

I used to LOVE this place I would come here every time I visited Redding which is often and normally would never want to come on here and leave a bad review but after how bad my past 2 experiences ordering takeout here were, to the point that I don't think I'll be coming back again. I felt I needed to at least leave my feedback. Normally I would always recommend this place, in the past the foods always been great and the staff is always very friendly. However my past 2 experiences ordering takeout were so bad I couldn't even eat the food nor could my family members (we all agreed it was BAD)! I ordered the same order both times (large miso soup, tempura yam roll, avokyu roll, white rice). The first bad experience I let slide because it was late when i ordered near closing time so I assumed that was the reason that 1. The miso soup WAS NOT MISO!! It tasted like the broth of Chinese dumpling soup absolutely was not miso (i figured maybe they ran out by the end of the night so they just threw some random soup in the container & gave that to me) 2. The avocado was unripe like hard crunchy to the bite (i figured they ran out of avocado & had to make due) 2. The yam was extremely undercooked! Hard & crunchy yuck! 3. The rice was mushy and yuck like bottom of the pan non edible! The entire meal just tasted so wrong but i gave them the benefit of doubt and tried about 2 weeks later with the same order. This time i ordered at 5:00 i figured how bad could the food be that early in the day on a Friday right? But NO i was wrong the food was once again AWFUL. This time the miso was definitely miso but EXTREMELY watered down to the point where I dumped to soy sauce packs in & it still tasted like nothing (in the past the miso here has been great). Once again avocado was unripe & hard. Yam was undercooked & hard. Rice on the sushi was extremely mushy again. The side of rice I ordered was great though, only thing I ordered that was exactly as expected. In the end I couldn't even eat the food i ordered it was just yuck & didn't taste right my family tried it & agreed. Sadly I don't think I can give them another chance after this. Most likely will try again here 3-6 months from now & see if it's better. Extremely disappointed because this place used to be great & there's not many sushi options here I guess I'll have to try something else next time i'm in town. read more

I thought maybe it was a fluke the first time but after finding a rat dropping on top of our sushi box that was delivered the first time with food poisoning to follow I was hoping I was mistaken. Sad to rate this at one star. Used to be one of my favorite places to eat. The sushi is mediocre... not because the fish isn't fresh... I think they have some of the freshest fish in town... but because the service is so lousy. They constantly (as in every time I go now) forget something that is supposed to be on the sushi or was ordered. Tonight they forgot our whole order. My whole family a day ago got off isolation for COVID. We all tested positive. We are still symptomatic but off isolation and doing our best to stay away from others until a little more time has passed. Called in our sushi and dinner box order at 523pm. The guy on the phone said "Sorry but there will be a 30 minutes sushi wait." I had no issue with this and planned to give them even extra time by picking up a grocery order across town. We did go get our groceries and took our time doing so looking at Xmas lights and so on. When we arrived to Tokyo Garden it was 630pm already. My husband went in to get the order as he was the least symptomatic. I waited patiently in the car for a half hour until I thought maybe something was wrong. I called my husband and he said "well it's not ready." Ok I'll be honest ... out of the two of us I am more of a Karen... much less trusting than my husband who had quietly paid and sat down and waited while people who had just shown up were served. I decided to throw on my mask and go in. When I went inside the place was crowded. People without masks were crowding inside and there were no gentle reminders from staff to keep distance or wear masks. Staff was running around with masks on their chins not even covering their faces. I tried to space myself away from others but there wasn't even any room... only a small crowded corner. Fine with me Redding... give me COVID again so I can take more time off work. There already aren't hardly any nurses in the hospital taking care of regularly sick patients due to the staff having COVID. I get vacation pay... while your family members suffer waiting hours in the ER because their is no staff to take care of them After speaking with the ditsy teenage hostess at the front I find out that our order had been completely ignored. None of the staff there seems to have any competence or common sense of customer service. Absolutely no apologies or compensation for their mistake - like hey we put an extra miso in there for your 2 hour wait and the inconvenience. Pretty sure the owner is a money hungry miser by the way her business is ran during COVID. Absolutely no consideration. If my husband hadn't paid already I would have just walked out and cooked up some eggs. Once I got my order... of course there were missing items. This is not my first time having a bad experience with Tokyo Garden but it's definitely my last. I won't be returning here. Unfortunately Kobe is the only other sushi place that I know of in Redding. I had the lunch special, which was veggie and tempura shrimp. It also came with miso soup and white rice. The service was excellent, the presentation of the food was great, and the food was yummy! My wife and I come here every week. The atmosphere is relaxing, the crew is top notch and the food is unbelievably delicious. Not only that, when the food arrives it's like seeing classic art on a dish. I am hesitant to review because I don't want to have to fight a crowd when we get here. So far, it's the best sushi in Redding I can find. So far... Having recently moved up from San Francisco, I'm pretty picky. Tokyo Garden's prices are reasonable, quality of food is good, and service is always friendly. They can get pretty busy for lunch, so I usually do take out. The front hostess seems to be pretty good at who is next in line as swarms of rude people wave receipts in her face to pay, or constantly ask when they can get seated. When I do take out, they always have it ready when I get there and never get my order wrong. I had to pull a star though, because I find too many rolls have tempura. I wish there were more Special Rolls with no tempura. It seems to be a Redding thing for sushi places though... read more

I used to come here all the time with my family as a teenager, it was always our favorite place. We grabbed some to-go noms while visiting my family this weekend for Mother's Day and it brought back some great memories. We called in ahead and the girl that took the order was really helpful in finding out what my gluten free options were. They don't have a gf menu but there are some items that are naturally or can be prepared gf. She really went above and beyond in taking our order, even asking if they should take any special precautions in preparing my food to prevent contamination of gluten, so that was greatly appreciated. Our order was ready in about 20 minutes and everything was correct. Walking in the restaurant was very nostalgic. The rich decorations including beautiful lighted glass windows and deep reds and blacks as the color scheme gives off a fun thematic atmosphere. The restaurant split into two rooms with booths and tables lining the walls and the sushi bar in back give it an intimate feel. Our food was tasty. I enjoyed edamame and the chicken curry which were naturally gf. The two rolls we ordered (avocado and Philadelphia) to share had fresh ingredients. My fiancé also had the chicken curry and thought it was pretty good. My parents enjoyed their beef teriyaki and shrimp tempura. Price wasn't bad, about 20 a person and we had enough for a meal the next day. Overall it seems like this place is still a pretty solid option with lots of menu diversity. read more

Worst service we've ever had at any restaurant. They sat us in a half booth behind their stupid Christmas tree in the second room and then completely forgot about us. We sat there forever waiting to order before we had to finally flag down a random girl to get our waitress that we had yet to even see enter the area. After ordering it took over an hour to get our food. There were 4 people in our party. We tried to make a reservation earlier in the day and the woman on the phone told us for 4 people we did not need a reservation and we could just show up and get seated. OK. We ended up waiting about 20 minutes to even get seated because it was packed. Upon waiting to be seated there is NOWHERE to wait except for 2 chairs sitting near the entrance and it seemed like us and couple other parties waiting to be seated were in everyone else's way. Hence wanting to make the reservation.... Our waitress kept telling us that they had a certain female cook working that night and she was "very slow and only worked 1 night a week." Might be a good time to rethink hiring someone that takes their sweet time back there with a restaurant full of people. They brought out the beginning of 3 of our meals and our fourth person didn't get anything. They finally got their food once everyone else was basically finished!!! Terrible timing, terrible service. I don't know how many times we were told "they're just finishing up your order and it will be right out." You can only say that so many times! The roll I ordered and read on the menu wasn't the roll I got. I tried my husbands sushi roll and it tasted identical to mine but they looked nothing alike. Bland. Lack of flavor. Boring. Will not come here again for a long time. Want good sushi? Go to Kampai or Fuji. The staff was nice, as usual, but the service was terrible. Always delicious. I have been several times. I go at least once when I am in town from SoCal. I will say that the servers are a little slow at times if I sit at a table or booth. Now I only sit at the sushi bar and the food and service to stellar gate! The sushi chefs make sure you are taken care of and always make the sashimi and rolls custom to my liking. I wish I could buy them a drink but they aren't allowed to have alcohol while working. This is a must for me when in town. read more

This was my third time here. Always fast and friendly service. The sushi is fresh and tasty. The sashimi is great and the food is great if you order Japanese. I enjoy this sushi bar unlike the reviewer who should have gone to the panda express to have his chicken tenders. Sushi is all about SUSHI, that's why I stay away from the non Japanese things on the menu. In using Yelp you have to read between the lines sometimes, then some times it is very obvious that the reviewer is up to no good. Although I did not like to see photos of what I'm ordering. It felt like I was at a Denny's. Maybe for the area, people need to know what they'll be eating as opposed to the description and how it's prepared. It's not just sushi for some. The staff are very friendly and attentive. Waited an hour for sushi rolls for my family. My food never came. After my family was finished eating, the waitress said my rice bowl didn't print and do I want to wait for them to start it now. I said no and ordered a California roll to go. Waited another hour for the roll. Service was atrocious. Waitress never offered refills for our drinks, didn't bother communicating about the wait, and stared at me from across the room because she knew it was taking so long. She barely acknowledged the absolutely insane wait times and the fact that she didn't even put my food in to be made in the first place. We paid $80 for 2 people, would have been more if I would have actually received my food. I would rather give my money to people who treat their customers like they actually appreciate their business. Teenage staff stood around and gossiped the whole time. During a business trip I had the opportunity to go to this restaurant a few times. I am a huge sashimi fan and the first thing I usually get at a sushi place is the Chirashi. I felt the presentation was quite nice, but the fish did have that look of being straight from the freezer. Another pet peeve of mine is how it was served. I prefer my Chirashi to come in a bowl with the sashimi resting on top, but this did not cause any stars to be lost. I was pretty happy with the size of the cuts and they did taste quite fresh. Overall I enjoyed the dish and would likely get it again. On my second night I was still craving some sashimi, so I decided to order the sashimi deluxe plate. It was very close in price (17.95) to the Chirashi (18.95) but didn't come with Tamayo or the seaweed salad. Again I was impressed with the presentation, but some of the tuna had that frozen look again. This time the rice came seperate in a bowl so I was a little more pleased aesthetically. Overall it tasted just as good as the Chirashi and would order again. The California rolls were kinda just extra as I had a dinner credit I was trying to use up. The last thing I wanted to review was the service. Both nights I was treated very nicely, even though I came in 30 minutes to close the first night. On the second night I felt like I was being well taken care of even though the restaurant was quite busy. You will be disappointed if you're a sushi snob. There was a little clear bone in the fish and an eyelash in the ginger. Small mistakes happen, however the food preparation could be better. The rice was dry and contained no vinegar, keeping a high ph allows the rice to remain sterile as it sits out and cools, and the rice was very cold. The spicy tuna roll is done differently than most places and this in itself isn't bad just .. disappointing. The Nigiri has generous portions of fish with little rice, but again the rice is just not right (it's like a sandwich with dry bread) I would recommend trying somewhere else if you're from out of town and you're spoiled by grade A stuff. read more

If it was just based off price I'd give a 2. It's just regular sushi in a fancy restaurant with fancy plating. However it was totally solid tasting sushi. No complaints on that just not looking to pay $20 for one person for dinner for regular sushi again. I called in for a takeout order and ordered something that's apparently not on the menu, but they offered to customize the roll free of charge. Everything else was kind of generically good sushi, but since it's waaaay better then the other sushi we've had in Redding, it get 4 stars. Took my son out to celebrate first day of college. Bought their $25 lobster roll, Dragon balls and salmon fried rice. Tiny rolls. Very expensive. HORRIBLE SERVICE. Deliberately tried to get any server to make eye contact for 15 minutes and none would. Finally had to raise my voice and hail one. My hot tea was ice cold. Say there unable to enjoy my drink or conversation and could not get a server to replace it. Won't be back.
