I just read a one-star review of this place that was 12 years old, so here's an update: Everything that writer said seems to have been fixed. (I should hope so if they wanted to still be in business 12 years later.) I've gotten takeout here twice and it was great, and it was waiting for me when I got there. I had Unagi Donburi (just unagi and rice) the first time and the Unagi Dinner (includes a side salad) the second time. Obviously, I love unagi (bbq'd eel), and both portions were large enough to satisfy my craving as well as fresh, delish and perfectly cooked. I'm dropping a star for two fairly minor reasons (minor but since there were two, it's annoying enough to make it not a five-star review -- yet. I'll be happy to give back the star if minor glitches are absent next time). First, they had only put chopsticks in my bag. When I asked if there were utensils in the bag, the nice lady checking me out said yes. I looked and saw chopsticks but no fork. Maybe most people would be fine with that, but I don't think restaurants should assume everyone can use them. Someone my age (65) who has severe arthritis simply can't wield two sticks of wood to save my life. So, why not ask the customer first? If I hadn't checked, I would have had quite a beast feast in my room. (Ever have a Beast Feast? If it's planned, it's so much fun. When forced to eat soft, moist foods with my hands in a hotel room, not so much.) Second, the salad was blah and certainly not worth $6 more. For one thing, they forgot the dressing. I'm in a hotel, so it's not like I can just walk over to my fridge and get some. The salad was also just boring -- mostly iceberg lettuce. Seriously? I get better side salads at McDonald's. At least they use mixed greens. That said, the sad side salad (say that ten times fast) was not enough to keep me away next time I'm in town. I'll just stop at Mickey D's before picking up my Unagi Donburi. (If you're intrigued by the Beast Feast idea, try it: Spread a tarp on the living room floor, invite a few friends, and serve anything you wouldn't usually eat with your hands. Spaghetti. Chocolate pudding. Use your imagination and give everyone a large plastic bib; garbage bags work great. It's even more fun if you feed each other, and kids love it.) read more

Waited for 45 minutes for them to get my order wrong. I repeated my order 3 times on the phone and then was placed on hold for at least 5 minutes before they could give me my total. Nice improvement on the floors it looks and smells much cleaner. Service is still way off - sat with dirty dishes, a menu and no water refills during my entire meal. Sushi tasted excellent but was sloppily constructed and difficult to eat. It was still much better that Kampai but not quite on par with Yama and it was. $$$$ - two rolls and a large Sake was $60 with the tip. Tokyo Garden is okay. I've been here several times. Sometimes the food is great, sometimes the servers are kind, and sometimes there aren't flies flying around. I've tried eating here a few times. Thanks to COVID we like to take out rather then dine in. The last few times I was told it would be 30-45 minutes for a roll, to which I always declined because of the extended wait. In really wanting to try this place, we picked a day and ordered well in advance. 3 Rolls, 40 minutes is what we were told. We placed the order and arrived just after the 40th minute. I paid $50 (kinda pricy for 3 rolls) for my food and waited. 20 minutes went by and I was still waiting. At this point my toddler is still in the car (With the AC running) and is getting anxious. The servers must have walked by me a dozen times and no one so much as sneezed in my direction. After I had to ask 3 different people about my order; someone finally went to check only to discover that the kitchen completely missed my ticket. I was asked to wait another 15 minutes, which turned into 25 before i was finally given my over priced, under served, less then fresh sushi.. 50 bucks later, and almost 2 hours with a screaming child. Tonight was the very last time I will ever go to Tokyo Garden. I have been a loyal customer for many years but the last couple of years they are unreasonably slow. If I place a togo order it takes an hour more than what I am told. If I order sushi in the restaurant they consistently take 1-2 hours to get our order out. It doesn't matter if they are busy or have 3 tables, it always takes way too long. Tonight I was dining with my family and we were the only ones seated on one half of the restaurant. I the watched several tables who were seated and ordered after me receive their orders, eat their entire meal, pay their bill, and leave before we received just half of our sushi order. Don't let the strip mall location fool you (behind Petco). I was recommended by another local business to eat here if I wanted sushi/bento. I'm very happy I stopped in. In spite of the fact they were super swamped at lunchtime (12:30PM when I arrived on a Thursday), they were adequately staffed. It took about five minutes to get a seat, but I ended up at the sushi bar. Since I was alone with my motorcycle gear, it made it easier on me and everyone else. The servers were primarily focused on full table service, so I got help from one of the two sushi chefs. I ordered a couple nigiri (maguro and ebi), a chicken teriyaki bento box and a Sapparo beer. Like their menu claims, all their ingredients are fresh daily. You can tell because the flavor of all the food burst through. Even the miso soup was excellent! During and after my dining experience, I looked around at the decor and studied the arrangement of the restaurant. Although it's a little cramped, they function well and a lot of the patrons are local regulars. I was chatted up by several (asking about my motorcycle and gear). I quite enjoyed the cozy atmosphere and surprisingly hometown feel of this establishment. The floors and tables are kept very clean. My arrival and departure of the restaurant also required me to use their restroom, which was very clean, well stocked, and user friendly. Right before I paid my bill, the owner had been walking around checking on things. He ended up talking to me for a few minutes. Very nice gentleman and seemed very conscientious about making sure my experience (and others around me) was above expectations. He also treats his staff very well and assists them if things get backed up. You don't see that much anymore. I'd recommend Tokyo Garden to anyone traveling here or just passing through. read more

Where do you begin? Online ordering goes through "Chinesesmenu.com" which cannot process credit cards. The prices on the site don't correspond with the prices charged when you go to pay and pickup your food- which tend to be higher. Oh, and the website offers to compute and add tips to the bill which don't carry through to bill presented when you go to pay.The on-site manager was unable to adjust prices to conform to their own website and claimed to have no power to make things right. Then there are the order foulups. Place your oder online and then drive up to the restaurant and wait. Fifteen minutes after your arrival you get to wait another 30 (45 minutes since order was placed). Once you arrive and try to pay- they won't give you a bill until the order is ready. One is left to wait in a small vestibule with unmasked fellow customers. The out come the order in plastic bags ad styrofoam containers. Pay your bill and drive away and when you get home you find that what you have is not what you ordered. This has happened twice now. The first time we let it slide. Tonight, we didn't and called to complain. First came an interrogation about what we ordered and what we had. Then came an were offered a refund once the owner got around to it. Since this was dinner the refund offer didn't seem to solve the problem. Back to the restaurant with the unordered container and a promise to have the correct ready when I got there. It wasn't and another wait ensued. Did I mention that every table in the main dining room was filled with no evidence of social distancing. Tokyo Garden used to be a reliable and good place to eat. Not any more. There staff knows nothing about customer service except to wish you a good evening as your flee. The evening mangers have no authority to make things right ad the kitchen can't decipher orders placed. Ownership needs to get it together. read more

The server was apologetic but we had to ask multiple times for things to be fixed. I never even received my side salad. Passing through Redding from LA to Seattle, randomly found this place. At first I was skeptical because of other yelp reviews, but it was FANTASTIC. I'm not sure why this place has bad reviews. All the employees were kind and attentive. Again, I was skeptical from the beginning because of other reviews, so I was paying attention to every detail. Literally nothing wrong with this place or the employees. Food was great (ended up eating way too much because how delicious it was lol) Service was great and the atmosphere was great too. I ordered spicy himachi and the rolls came out with a little spurt of SRIRACHA on each roll. To me, there are few reasons to do that to sushi 1) the sushi chef doesn't know how to make real spicy sushi or 2) they're trying to mask the flavor of fish if it's not particularly fresh or of good quality.
