So wanted to love this restaurant. New to Redding and my daughter and I are huge sushi fans. It's our favorite food and when we go out to eat it is almost always sushi. Hard to find the front door but once we did we were very pleased with the ambiance. Raw is a lovely space and the bar is large and looks very inviting and like a place tou could feel very comfortable having a cocktail or two. The seating is comfortable and has a relaxed vibe. The sushi was just not great. We ordered several of the special rolls that ranged in price from $22 to $29. They all tasted pretty much the same and every one of them had the same sauce. But the safest part is the tempura shrimp in the rolls tasted like it had been sitting for awhile. And instead of getting that crispy light tempura crust, it was gummy and heavy. The rice was gummy and I am not sure if it was overcooked or perhaps had too much sugar added which madeit overly sweet and congealed. We also ordered a dou le.order of the Hamachi sashimi which was fair but lacked that super rich butter flavor I crave. We were so hoping to find our go to sushi spot while visiting Raw. All 5 rolls were very good, not exceptional, but got a cool and complete privacy booth with disco light, (nah cool rainbow light) and water refills 3 times with overflowing love from our waiter. In town for the light show and decided to give RAW a try. My issues overall was the ambiance wasn't my jam. The low lighting and feel just felt like it was trying to take us to LA or something. Not a huge issue and many folks probably love this but it did feel weird to me. At first glance of the menu the prices are pretty wild compared to what I'm more use to in the Chico area. I have had plenty of sushi around the US so I know prices vary but always a little sticker shock seeing those $20+ rolls. We ended up with at least two rolls priced at $25. That said we really enjoyed the rolls(wish I could remember the names now) and thankfully for the price they did fill us up. They're on the large side and tasted fresh. The kid LOVED their spicy edamame that we ordered a second one. The traditional salted one was a little off and I think it was cause they used oil? Still good but didn't hit the spot as well. I have been coming to Raw for a couple of years now, which I just love. I finally took my boo there. I was very hesitant at first as he is Very picky. He ordered off the menu and they accommodated us, he ordered the halibut and it came pretty dry, he sent it back and the second order was to perfection. My husband and I came here for our 15th anniversary and had dinner. We had the privilege of being served by Maggie who provided such excellent service! When I stepped in, I felt like I was in a restaurant back home in Hawaii, like I had stepped out of Redding. My husband and I spent quite a bit of time analyzing how much the restaurant's design and atmosphere reminded us of home. It was beautiful to step into a place that felt like home, especially because I have been missing it a lot recently. If it were for these things alone I would give 5 stars. Now for the food: -The wings were done well! -The tempura and sauce were average - not bad, but not as great as I have had in places where we would return just for the tempura. This is likely the best tempura you will find in Redding. The hamachi sushi rolls were disappointing in overall flavor and appearance, but the price during happy hour was nice. -Now to the Chirashi. My favorite food is sashimi, so whenever visiting a sushi place I always order the chirashi as a personal scale of how good the place is. I think the freshness of the fish matters in such a simple dish, the sushi rice can shine, and the presentation reveals the care taken to produce something beautiful. Every Friday, in Hawaii, my dad gets fresh sashimi grade fish from the morning auction and prepares it, so my expectations for sashimi are pretty high! I understand we are in Redding and we are not in Hawaii so I adjusted my expectations based on that. Here are the things that I feel could use some improvement: 1. The thickness of the sashimi I feel that when using previously frozen fish it is all the more important to cut the fish thinly because of the texture of the fish. 2. The overall presentation. Although there was quite a bit of food served, it felt as though it was thrown together versus being intentionally placed. I also think it would have been better served in a bowl. 3. The amount of food given. I know some would disagree with me because we are all trying to get a "bang for our buck" but there was so much going on. I think if some of the items were left off of the plate it would have been closer to an authentic chirashi. I LOVED the tako salad so much that I would return just for that, BUT I felt that it could do better as the star of it's own show. I think this place has a lot of potential! Maggie, our server, was fantastic! The teriyaki chicken was an atrocity, but since my husband ate it, and drowned it in wasabi and soy sauce, we paid for it. Maggie said she would've had it taken off, but he ate most of it since he was absolutely famished. The sushi rolls were good. The cherry blossom was our favorite. The miso was impeccable. Me, my wife, my brother and his wife were so excited to go to Raw, to start we had two orders of there wings, the spicy potstickers and the calamari, then we got 5 sushi rolls. the food was Extremely good except for the calamari, it was like chewing a rubber band and had zero flavor. we told our server "they where not good ,no flavor and overly chewy " she just laughed .the main issue we had was the service . we ended up being there mostly waiting for 3 hours! We were waiting for an hour for our rolls after we ordered them . We asked for napkins four times and never received them I ended up walking up to the host at the entrance and getting them myself after waiting for over an hour. they did get drinks for the other three people in my party quickly (i did not drink) and our server was not really attentive. But was very polite, friendly And very informative so we did still leave her a Good tip. I can not say that I would would go back . For $300 I would expect a higher standard of service. read more

With my boss in town, this was the most upscale restaurant that had some cosmopolitan flair I could find in Redding. Cattlemen's was not gonna cut it! RAW serves sushi along with American style meat entrees. Sushi is all Ala carte here, not all you can eat like in Nevada. Service was very nice and were able to answer all the questions about the food options available. We decided to stick to the sushi side of the menu. I'll say the interior is very nice and modern chic. We ordered 4 different rolls, not that I can remeber the exact names, but we did have some unagi nigiri pieces. All the rolls were good, not completely over sauced like some rolls can be. I asked light on the sauces. The rolls were priced around $15 - $18. Food - 3/5 I had heard so many things about this place, so it was so hard for me that the food was just... not great. Well, I should say that the sushi wasn't great, which is what we primarily came for. We had their Cajun Fries, and those were bomb. But the sushi just was not great. I have had sushi a ton of different places, and the California Roll feels pretty standard, but I couldn't even finish mine here. It was too crunchy, and has a distinct cucumber heavy taste. I got that and another specialty roll that also had a really strong lemon taste that masked all the other flavors. Overall a really disappointing sushi experience! I'm writing this review with a lot of disappointment. This spot is known for its sushi (kind of), but I decided to mix it up and try something different: the Chicken Katsu Sandwich. Big mistake. For $16, I expected at least a decent effort--maybe a chicken breast or a well-prepared thigh. Instead, I got something that was over 50% fat and under 50% actual meat. The taste? Also a letdown. The only thing carrying the flavor was the sauce, which didn't even seem like real Japanese katsu sauce. Why didn't I stick to sushi? Because almost every roll on the menu had cream cheese. Seriously, what's up with that? There's one premium roll my wife enjoys that doesn't have cream cheese, and that's pretty much the only saving grace. I'll give them two stars because the drinks are always solid and consistent, which is something I've noticed on every visit. But that's about all I can say for this place. Sushi plus bar- Raw is a good new place to check out if you're in the Redding Area. We called in advance to see if they were busy and they said the had enough to seat two people are were expecting to close the sushi bar by 9:30 due to an event at 10. We got there by 8:30 or so seated and drinks, Edamame were out to us in no time. We ordered a spicy edamame but there was no spice just salt and garlic. The pasta was good and definitely would recommend it to anyone. The shrimp was big and had lots of taste. My husband and I ended up sharing it and we still couldn't finish it. We ordered the Cherry Blossom roll and crunch roll- both came very late as our server informed us that the bar gave our order to someone else. It was unfortunate and we kind of just stayed there waiting for our rolls. The crunchy roll was okay and the cherry blossom was very good. They were cleaning all around us to prepare for the 10 pm event. As we paid the bill and got to up to leave we forgot our pasta to go box and it seems they threw it away. I went back less than minutes to get it as it was pretty expensive and tbh we felt a bit rushed to leave that i got my bag but forgot the food and my husband went to the bathroom. I came back to ask for it and they told me it had been thrown away. I think whoever was cleaning should have asked our server if they could hold on it or at least see if we were still in the parking lot. As soon as I realized I left it I came back, I understand that it was left there but yeah it was a bummer for the food to have been thrown away. Haven't been there for months, but did go there four times, before we stopped going there. The drinks were good, but the food is average - to just below average, especially for the price. The worst part is that we were completely ignored last time. Like I stated before, an apparent prominent older couple, and their party, was seated next to us (had no idea who they were but they had a small dog with them, on the booth, and the servers bent over backwards to cater to them - while we were ignored). It was one of the worst service experiences at a restaurant. I'd rather drive to Sacramento and go to Mikunis for good sushi - been there at least ten times and never had a bad meal. I hesitated giving three stars, but it's one of the "better" restaurants in Redding. So, because Redding lacks competition, I'll give it three stars instead of two. The drinks and ambience are good.
