Raw is our hands down favorite sushi restaurant in Redding. We love the sushi so much that we haven't tried the other entrees yet. Maybe someday we will. In town for the light show and decided to give RAW a try. My issues overall was the ambiance wasn't my jam. The low lighting and feel just felt like it was trying to take us to LA or something. Not a huge issue and many folks probably love this but it did feel weird to me. At first glance of the menu the prices are pretty wild compared to what I'm more use to in the Chico area. I have had plenty of sushi around the US so I know prices vary but always a little sticker shock seeing those $20+ rolls. We ended up with at least two rolls priced at $25. That said we really enjoyed the rolls(wish I could remember the names now) and thankfully for the price they did fill us up. They're on the large side and tasted fresh. The kid LOVED their spicy edamame that we ordered a second one. The traditional salted one was a little off and I think it was cause they used oil? Still good but didn't hit the spot as well. Me, my wife, my brother and his wife were so excited to go to Raw, to start we had two orders of there wings, the spicy potstickers and the calamari, then we got 5 sushi rolls. the food was Extremely good except for the calamari, it was like chewing a rubber band and had zero flavor. we told our server "they where not good ,no flavor and overly chewy " she just laughed .the main issue we had was the service . we ended up being there mostly waiting for 3 hours! We were waiting for an hour for our rolls after we ordered them . We asked for napkins four times and never received them I ended up walking up to the host at the entrance and getting them myself after waiting for over an hour. they did get drinks for the other three people in my party quickly (i did not drink) and our server was not really attentive. My husband and I came here for our 15th anniversary and had dinner. We had the privilege of being served by Maggie who provided such excellent service! When I stepped in, I felt like I was in a restaurant back home in Hawaii, like I had stepped out of Redding. My husband and I spent quite a bit of time analyzing how much the restaurant's design and atmosphere reminded us of home. It was beautiful to step into a place that felt like home, especially because I have been missing it a lot recently. If it were for these things alone I would give 5 stars. Now for the food: -The wings were done well! -The tempura and sauce were average - not bad, but not as great as I have had in places where we would return just for the tempura. This is likely the best tempura you will find in Redding. The hamachi sushi rolls were disappointing in overall flavor and appearance, but the price during happy hour was nice. -Now to the Chirashi. My favorite food is sashimi, so whenever visiting a sushi place I always order the chirashi as a personal scale of how good the place is. I think the freshness of the fish matters in such a simple dish, the sushi rice can shine, and the presentation reveals the care taken to produce something beautiful. Every Friday, in Hawaii, my dad gets fresh sashimi grade fish from the morning auction and prepares it, so my expectations for sashimi are pretty high! I understand we are in Redding and we are not in Hawaii so I adjusted my expectations based on that. Here are the things that I feel could use some improvement: 1. The thickness of the sashimi I feel that when using previously frozen fish it is all the more important to cut the fish thinly because of the texture of the fish. 2. The overall presentation. Although there was quite a bit of food served, it felt as though it was thrown together versus being intentionally placed. I also think it would have been better served in a bowl. 3. The amount of food given. I know some would disagree with me because we are all trying to get a "bang for our buck" but there was so much going on. I think if some of the items were left off of the plate it would have been closer to an authentic chirashi. I LOVED the tako salad so much that I would return just for that, BUT I felt that it could do better as the star of it's own show. I think this place has a lot of potential! I have had sushi a ton of different places, and the California Roll feels pretty standard, but I couldn't even finish mine here. It was too crunchy, and has a distinct cucumber heavy taste. I got that and another specialty roll that also had a really strong lemon taste that masked all the other flavors. Overall a really disappointing sushi experience! RAW serves sushi along with American style meat entrees. Sushi is all Ala carte here, not all you can eat like in Nevada. I'll say the interior is very nice and modern chic. We ordered 4 different rolls, not that I can remeber the exact names, but we did have some unagi nigiri pieces. All the rolls were good, not completely over sauced like some rolls can be. I asked light on the sauces. The rolls were priced around $15 - $18. I'm writing this review with a lot of disappointment. This spot is known for its sushi (kind of), but I decided to mix it up and try something different: the Chicken Katsu Sandwich. Big mistake. For $16, I expected at least a decent effort--maybe a chicken breast or a well-prepared thigh. Instead, I got something that was over 50% fat and under 50% actual meat. The taste? Also a letdown. The only thing carrying the flavor was the sauce, which didn't even seem like real Japanese katsu sauce. Why didn't I stick to sushi? Because almost every roll on the menu had cream cheese. Seriously, what's up with that? There's one premium roll my wife enjoys that doesn't have cream cheese, and that's pretty much the only saving grace. I'll give them two stars because the drinks are always solid and consistent, which is something I've noticed on every visit. But that's about all I can say for this place. The worst part is that we were completely ignored last time. Like I stated before, an apparent prominent older couple, and their party, was seated next to us (had no idea who they were but they had a small dog with them, on the booth, and the servers bent over backwards to cater to them - while we were ignored). It was one of the worst service experiences at a restaurant. I'd rather drive to Sacramento and go to Mikunis for good sushi - been there at least ten times and never had a bad meal. I hesitated giving three stars, but it's one of the "better" restaurants in Redding. So, because Redding lacks competition, I'll give it three stars instead of two. The drinks and ambience are good. Walking in the ambience was this is an active place. Three big screens near the bar and happy hour well under way. You can tell it is a seafood place with a beach smell in the air, nothing bad though! Great lighting detail throughout the restaurant impressed. I had a top shelf Don Julio 1942, amazingly it was only $11. My wife her usual Lemon Drop, it was pretty good but did not take her top spot from Cattleman's. We devoured the edamame appetizer, and in time we received our sushi rolls. They were delicious and more than we could tackle. All in all a great experience, an extensive menu, and prices for all tastes. You will leave happy and satisfied. Only have one issue, a couple of the busboys just stood near the entrance bothering the hostess and constantly running his hands through his locks, kind grossed me out after awhile so I mentioned it to our waitress. Normally love it here. Food is great. Unfortunately, had a bad experience with staff the other day. Came by for happy hour, ordered a few things off of that menu, and a dragon roll of the main menu. When our food arrived, our server handed us a roll called the dragonfly roll, which looked amazing - however I'm pregnant (I can't eat uncooked fish) and the dragon roll was what I ordered, which is fully cooked. I let the server know there must have been a misunderstanding, I ordered the "dragon" roll, and she repeatedly said, yes this is the "dragonfly" and kept arguing with me, to the point where I asked her for a menu and pointed directly to the roll I ordered. To clarify, there is a dragon AND dragonfly roll. Which she then, told me that I ordered the dragon fly and blamed it on me but said she will correct it. I waited another 30+ minutes for my roll, which wouldn't have been a big deal, but she charged me for the more expensive roll, that I had sent back and never even ordered in the first place. Not sure why there are two rolls of such similar names, especially if it's going to be confusing to staff. It wouldn't have been a big deal if she hadn't treated me so poorly in response, but really bummed me out being treated that way when coming here and looking forward to an expensive meal. read more
