I have mixed feelings about this place because while the overall experience is enjoyable, the sushi itself is just okay, especially considering the price. I used to come here more often when there were fewer sushi options in and around Redding, but now that there are more choices available, I don't see myself returning as frequently. The ambience is ok for a strip mall location. We went in because my son really wanted to get sushi from their circling boat/converoy belt service. They advertised the sushi boat service on their door, but did not have it during the time window they posted. I had no expectations for great sushi and thought I'd get "ok" sushi here. Instead, It was memorable only for how bad it was. The tuna (maguro) was awful. It was inedibly grainy and did not slightly spring back when touched with gentle pressure--the sign of either low quality fish, or lack of freshness. It is also the common bright pink gassed fish--not a sign of quality. I wouldn't feed this to my cat. I ate one piece of fish without rice. The texture was grainy and gross. I figure it was a fluke and tried another piece before spitting it out. Hard pass. The salmon roe sushi was also off, and inedible. The egg sushi was water-logged and not good. Finally, their chef does not know how to make proper sushi rice. The rice should be sweet with a hint of tartness, both in balance with the rice. No harmony here--it was just slightly tart. When I complained that it was inedible the server was suspiciously defensive insisting it was "fresh." If that's true, it was not good fish from a reputable vendor. If you want sushi and you're in Redding, go to Kobe or Raw. read more

We live in Los Angeles, right next to the ocean, and come from a place where sushi and Korean BBQ are everywhere -- and I can honestly say Yama Sushi is better than a lot of spots back home. I came here with my girlfriend and our 2-year-old daughter and was seriously impressed. The spicy tuna roll and the bulgogi were hands down my favorites -- fresh, flavorful, and done right. There was an older Asian lady running the floor by herself, serving us and about three other tables, and she was incredibly attentive the entire time. Never felt rushed, never ignored. I don't understand how this place is under 4 stars -- those reviews are straight BS. This is easily my favorite place to eat in Redding. We will absolutely be coming back. read more

Tried Yama Sushi for the first time this week and had a pleasant experience. The servers were friendly, helpful, and quick to take our order. We settled on some edamame and potstickers as an appetizer as well as a couple sushi rolls and a hand roll. Overall, the food was well cooked and had good flavor. Most of the items we would order again except the chicken, which is more a personal preference rather than it not being done well. They offer the cool sushi boat bar for lunch which looks worth a try. My only qualm was the restaurant itself. It was really run down and had a weird smell. I was here with a friend and wanted sushi, not really into KBB, as I really don't wanna hafta cook my own food at the table. You get all smoky smelling after dinner too. We ordered some rolls cause my friend likes rolls more than the real nigiri raw fish experience. It seem to take a long tome for the rolls to get served, but maybe they were just busy. I don't expect a authentic Japanese sushi experience here in Redding, where there's few Japanese people around, but I was hoping for a competent skilled sushi experience. ... even if it is just rolls. The rolls seem a little over piled with other stuff than the actual fish. The all you can eat lunch special is a fun parade of boats filled with fresh plates of food circling the center of the restaurant. Everything was very good. First of all, the sushi boats are now only for the buffet lunch, which is a major drag for those of us who prefer to choose our plates by sight at other hours of the day. Secondly the service was slow, the house Chardoney was terrible and the food was fresh from the Grocery Outlet frozen section. I kid you not the chicken yakatori was old, stringy and tough. The spring rolls were frozen pathetic attempts to pass for food. The gyoza was just okay but you could get the same thing at Costco for much less. The teriyaki shrimp was the real joke, it was a 20 to 30 shrimp cut to fit on a stick with breading 3 times its size, dry as the Mojave and flavorless. I had to ask for extra sauce just to swallow it down. Needless to say I will not be going back to Yama. This review is for the Korean BBQ side only. The meats are deliciously marinated. Our favorites were the bulgogi and the marinated pork belly. The marinated chicken was good, the garlic chicken was just salty (no garlic). The gyoza was tasty. The California rolls were salty. I haven't been to a Korean BBQ with table top grills since the Palace in Santa Clara was still open. There was a lovely lady playing piano as well. Will definitely be back :) read more

Terrible food, their side dish were 20 peanuts, 7 small brocolis, salty kimchi, shredded carrots, shredded raddish and some weird tofu. So terrible that it wasn't even worth taking a picture. The place has a weird smell and the award winning meat is the spicy pork belly which was an uncured bacon marinated with there nasty spicy sauce. The owner/server/cashier was annoying . She tried to over charge us by charging us some appetizers which was include at the AYCE menu, thinking we won't check the bill. To make thr long story short this must be a North Korean Bbq place! This is for the bbq side. Came here for a dinner date with my wife and while the staff was nice, the food isn't good. 1. Don't advertise ribeye if it isn't ribeye. We ordered both the ribeye steak and thinly sliced marinated ribeye. When it came out, it looked like top round. It dried out quick since there's barely any fat. 2. They only have one sauce for dip. The lead said it was "grill meat sauce." It tasted like a thickened teriyaki sauce. No sesame oil, no ssamjang/spicy bean paste, or even gochujang. 3. Asked if they had lettuce wraps, and the lead lady said yes...it's in your salad. When I clarified I was asking for lettuce leaves to wrap the meat, she asked why would I want that when I can just eat the salad. Again, patiently I kept asking if she had it, yes or no. She gave me a hurried yes and disappeared and came back with butter lettuce leaves. Different, but at least it was somewhat in line with what we wanted. Food overall was terrible. Every meat that came out looked slimy and unappetizing. Pork belly, honestly...if you've been to ANY Korean bbq with a huge Asian population, you know that cut is THICK! At Yama, it looked like uncured bacon bought in bulk at any supermarket. And I've never had any issue with ordering more meat at ANY Korean bbq restaurant. My wife and I had removed the meat from the grill because it was going to overcook and burn when another server came out and asked if we were ready for more food. I asked to clarify how many meats and appetizers we could get at a time, but she immediately said "you have to finish the meat on your plate first, otherwise I will have to charge you $4 for the meats." When has that ever been a thing? I thought it was if you don't finish any leftover meat at the end is when they do the additional charge. Madness. Staff was nice, but that was only towards one person. The person that greeted us was nice and attentive, she kindly asked us to wait. But the lead and her friend (I'm assuming) cut her off and told us just go in the other room. So shoutout to the tall server/hostess with glasses. I'm not sure how they're sushi is, because the ones I had on their appetizer menu isn't good. They seem to love covering everything in these thick, goopy saucea. I called ahead because I was in a hurry to grab dinner and get to a work meeting. She told me that my order would be ready in 5 minutes. I also ordered something from another cafe and they said 15 minutes so I went to get my sushi first. When I got there 15 minutes after my phone call, the sushi was not ready and I waited another 10 minutes. It was 25 minutes from the time I ordered u til I got my food. I expressed that I was expecting it to be ready to the new young hostess and she was extremely rude. I even asked her if she could please not elevate her voice because she started getting very upset and saying that it was ready in 5 minutes. I told her no it was 25 minutes from the time I called and she kept saying it was 5 minutes from when you got here. It was like talking in circles. Then the owner came and said they can't make the food before you pay because some people don't show up. I felt gaslighted and people should not yell at their customers even if the customer yells which I did not. The sushi is just ok. We do like the novelty of the boats but they only do the boat sushi during certain times and days. The price I would say reflects the food you get. There are definitely better sushi places in Redding but this place is not the worse. Sometimes have been better than other times. The last time we went though it was pretty bad and so we dont plan to go back for a good while. The sushi was not cut consistently in size. Consistently delicious. Any time I have to drive down to Redding I make sure to eat here. The buffet is also a great value, you get your money's worth with just a few plates. I moved here from Reno so I had high expectations for this sushi and man, this is some of THE BEST I ever had and they have sushi boats on a river! The restaurant is so nice. Unfortunately I missed the ayce lunch so I ordered to go. My total was 107 and some change. I got 4 rolls a meso soup and the spring rolls. Had the Korean BBQ tonight for the first time. A little hesitant after reading reviews. Absolutely a great restaurant for Redding. They have over a dozen proteins now and 14 apps. My partner and I went to this place last night for dinner and were really impressed with the quality of the food and service provided. The wait staff kept apologizing that they were short two servers, but we really never noticed as they were extremely responsive and efficient. Plus, all the servers were wearing masks, which is really important and appreciated right now. The selection of meats were ample and freshly cut. The appetizers were delicious as well. I really enjoyed this experience, we have been to other similar bbq places outside the area and so I am happy to see one here in Redding. The place was clean, nicely decorated, and they had the temperature just right- which can be hard to do with some man independent grills going. If you're reading this, don't go here and save your money. We went here for the all you can eat Korean BBQ. On the menu of items, it says you can only order two appetizers and three protein at a time. And all must be finished before you're allowed to order again. Additionally, you have a 1.5 hour time limit. We were a party of four and once we got in, we wet seated and it took 15 minutes for the waiter to bring us water. Then walked away. And the BBQ side of the resturant only had two tables of customers, us and one other table of two people. Not busy at all. After we got our waters, we waited another 15 minutes to make an order. I kid you not. We sat down, got water in 15 minutes and then ordered another 15 minutes later. I was keeping track of the time because of the time limit. I thought, it should be okay, we don't usually take that long to eat. When the meats came out, it was so little. Two plates of steak that's about the size of a hamburger patty. And beef marinated beef bigogi (which looks like u cooked chicken and not marinated) that was the size of a tennis ball. Serious man!!! We're a table of four people.We finished eating the food and waited another 15 minutes to order more. And I'm dead serious when I say this, they only came around every 15 minutes like clock work. And we were only able to order 5 times. With the last time where the waiter saying to use "you have 10 more minutes, what do you want to order". Seriously? The waiter started the 1.5 timer the moment we sat down, and the first half hour with no food at all counted as half hour in the 1.5 hours? Wtf! On the last order, we order steak again and the portion was even smaller than the first portion. Man... reducing a portion in half which was already small to begin with. And with four people dining!!! Why are we getting the same amout of appetizers and protein as the table across from us with two people, when we have four people! Customer service was the worse! Now the food. Don't waste your money. At $30.95, you could have beef is... -New York Steak -thinly cut New Your Steah (only three rolls!!) -ribeye steah -thickly cut ribeye steak (yup, only three rolls) -beef bigigoi THATS IS FOR THE BEEF! Options. And two of them are the same thing, just cut differently Then only four pork choices and four chicken choices. If you're reading this, I urge you not to go eat here. If you do happen to go here, I'm sure you agree with my review. Serious, one tall strong Asian waiter, takes his sweet time serving only two tables. And only coming around 15 minutes each time like clockwork. What is he even doing in between that time. He's certainly not cooking any of the food for us. We are cooking it ourselves. It takes him 15 minutes to cut a slick of steak! That's frozen to begin with! Also, three of the four people in our party got sick from the frozen spoiled food. I know before I gave 5 stars but if I could give more stars I would! They now offer l AYCE sushi from 11:30-2:30 on weekdays for only $18.95!!!! And the service is still insanely quick. If you haven't yet I highly recommend this place for sushi. It's Redding CA we are hours from the coast so please keep that in mind. But I'm still very impressed with this establishment read more
