11/5 I visited Tokyo Chic for the very first time. The Anime Pasadena convention was going on so the store was probably more crowded than usual. However, it did not take long for the order to be fulfilled and food came out hot/fresh even with a rush of people - the food, drinks, and sauces are all delicious. I imagine it to be maybe even better if the employees were able to take time on each order. The store itself is small, maybe can seat around 25 people. There's a self serve station for fountain drinks, their specialty lemonades/tea, condiments/sauce, pickled daikon, utensils/napkins and a huge kiosk by the station so this area was very crowded. I think the layout can improve since it is very messy and tight especially when having someone order @ the kiosk, order @ the cashier, get drinks/condiments, & dine in all at the same time. I love the variery of sauces they have, most of them are hoouse made and definitely unique to the store - my favorite is the wasabi mayo, so good and pleasant. Their housemade pickled daikons are to die for, tastes better than most Korean restaurants I've been and definitely better than the ones sold @ grocery stores - it was so crunchy, juicy, and had a perfect balance of the sweet and pickled tastes. Their housemade drinks are very good too - I love the teas and the strawberry lemonade (these are extra charge though).
Unfortunately you cannot order al la carte/chicken only unless you order a huge party tray. I don't like ordering "combo meals" with chicken, I think the sides are underwhelming and not good...I'm just here for the chicken. Hopefully, they will one day allow customers to order chicken only. You can order either with fries (which are actually potato wedges, seasoned well but totally soggy and not crispy so I didn't like them). For the bento sides, it came with rice, vegetables (mostly cabbage?), a pork dumpling, and they packed the pickled daikon.
The prices aren't too low however, the portion and size of the chicken items are really big and enough to share. I couldn't take picture of everything, but my friends and I all ordered with a sauce. I didn't know the sauces are the same as the self serve, it's not like the sauces are cooked or caramelized with the hot chicken. I suggest just ordering the chicken items plain with no sauce, and to just dip it yourself - I think that is more enjoyable and the chicken will not go soggy as fast, the chicken itself is so crispy and flavorful already. I ordered bone-in, my friends ordered boneless, and another ordered the chicken sandwich. All of our meats were dark meat surprisingly (yes even the boneless items) which I LOOOOVE. It was so delicious, juicy, and moist. The chicken pieces were huge, in comparison to puny, plain wingstop or buffalo wild wings so I think it is definitely worth the price! The only other wing place I know that serves huge ones are Chan Chan in Irvine. The chicken sandwich was huge and beautiful, I would even suggest sharing that with someone as well. We also ordered the milk jelly dessert - it was tasty, would be better if served cold, it was pretty much lukewarm and not chill enough. It has big chunks of flavorless jelly that is very smooth and soft, goes well with the sweet milk. The little mochi balls were pleasant, tasted better the more you chewed, and there were red jellies I assume strawberry. FYI though, the main ingredient of the sweet milk mixture is Coffeemate French Vanilla creamer. I also think this dessert would be way better if served in a cup as a dessert beverage, with a boba straw to sip sip.
The aesthetic of this shop is adorable - from takeout boxes, to heart shaped sauce containers, and even takeout TOTE bags (unsure if it's a promotion but that's currently what they provided, no plastic or paper. The tote bag has a promotion printed that if customers return the bag, they get a free musubi.). When you check in on Yelp, the current promotion gets you a baby chick night light or the milk jelly dessert! I would totally go here again if I am in the area, but there is paid metered parking, and paid parking garages within walking distance and the store is small, so I suggest to order takeout and eat elsewhere.
I want to note that the super cute "mascot" looks totally different than the shop's official logo. This "mascot" looks toooo familiar to a character named Elizabeth from the anime, Gintama so...I don't know if the artist looked at that character for influence. This shop is totally not Gintama-related... read more
