Delayed review but better late than never. Corporate move from Atlanta to Portsmouth, NH, in January 2017. They contaminated an entire truckload of our belongings (everything we owned) by packing our household goods alongside a motor-boat they pulled out of a Georgia lake. Then they let it stew in the (unseasonably) warm sun for a long weekend before transporting it. Then, when we are gasping and choking as they moved it into our hose, wondering that the hell is going on, they tell us to piss off. Ended up hiring an attorney. Turns out the laws are written to heavily favor movers... and that expensive insurance you pay for? Only matters if the moving company cares about their reputation. They can choose to pay nothing and there is nothing that a customer can do other than write a bad review. Learn something new every day, I suppose. At the end of the day we recovered enough to pay the attorney, pay to have our house decontaminated, and pay to have all our stuff hauled off and land-filled so it didn`t sicken any other families. I have had five cross-country moves with my family, this was the absolute worst. Use at your peril. read more

Extremely disappointed with Tobin Movers. The good: they did arrive early and were ambitious to get loading trucks. Five men, pleasant enough. The bad: They damaged an antique desk (family heirloom) which had be recently resorted, came out beautifully I might add. Large crack in the corner and significant "ding". They did reimburse me .60 cents per pound weight of the desk. Refinishing will cost much more than that. They also damaged three irreplaceable figurines, heartbreaking. I was told they weren't responsible for anything I packed myself. Exactly why I did it so that I knew they were wrapped in bubble wrap and packaged carefully. Box was marked "fragile" in numerous places. One side of the box was crushed directly under pieces that were broken. Clearly heavier things were placed on top of it. I guess "packaged yourself" doesn't include the mover handling it with care. We had two quotes for our move. Tobin was significantly higher than the other. We decided to go with the higher quote (them) hoping they would take more care with our items. Guess not. read more

We hired this company may 2013. We had one previous nightmare move with a small local mover so were scared to death. This time we decided to be "smart" and hire a local agent of a giant national company-- Bekins Van Lines (Tobin and sons) What a disaster we had. The damages. The massive loss of $1500 of frozen and refrigerated food ( from 2 large 20 cu ft refrigerators). And the down right dishonesty of statements we carefully questioned in our initial estimation meeting And the non stop fighting between the recently rehired project Msnager and the two hard working assistants Two days after our move, this manager was fired. Even my husband called and spoke to our estimator/mover manager -- co-owner with his brother of the company. My husband is an attorney and he lied to him too . If I wrote all the detail of each horror this review would be impossibly long and this never get published. So I will share only a few items Insurance: He assumed us for such a short move to do 16 cents on the dollar of value. He was warm effusive polished and I got swept by the giant seal of approval called BEKINS van lines He failed to tell me that if I PACKED the boxes, then NONE of the contents wd be insured Marathon movers' outstanding saleswoman Cathy later informed me of the entire careful structure of proper insurance -- too late for me. Damages: we had a large wood antique Chinese more primaries grand cupboard with two large doors -- they cracked one of the hand carved peg/hole system of connectors -- extremely difficult to repair We have a solid mahogany 1910 bedroom set with two glass topped dressers -- tops beveled hand curved to fit the top perfectly made half inch thick They packed wrapped them so poorly the lower dresser ( w matching mirror) top was completely cracked on one side Irreplaceable The tall dresser had scratches gouges on legs corners Worse the crew manager remained in the truck during the entire load process. Sitting around. Never came in to help. And did one if the worst stacking/ fitting if boxes items in the truck I have ever seen Finally I packed all the frozen food just as they started loading. With large labels. The crew manager grabbed all if them and put them way in the front of the truck when I had just td him to have them put in last -- quickly accessible He did the same thing w our luggage which had items we needed immediately When we finally arrived at our daughters new one bedroom at Presudential estates in Quincy we found the keaSing agent had misled her. Never actually allowed her to see the unit and had just shown her father and her a paper drawing floor plan. When we arrived I realized it was way too small so the move in was cancelled and Everyting had to go into Tobins storage parking lot for 10 days until we located a new apt In 15 minutes we found a hotel room at Martiott residence Inn, Danvers MA -- just 3 miles from Tobins. But the crew manager refused to wait and left in. 5 minutes w all our food stuck in the front end of his truck and all our suitcases What happened the next day at their office was horrific. With many lies and then the refusal of giving me a copy of our original contract He was on the phone with his lawyer a long time . I was unable to fight them. Report them for when I returned home to Minnesota my husbands brother died of cancer and I had to jump into a 5 month project getting my own home on the sale market Then the 5 th month my husband became very ill for the next 5 months Monday I am moving my daughter to the NE Bronx kn New York. I have rented my own 22 ft Penske truck. And through a wonderful old friend have hired two of his good honest friends to help move drive and a little packing. I will put all if us up in a marriott courtyard. Feed them. Then put them in a train back to Biston. Total cost w b $3000 --if I were to hire a Mover the cost would be $6000 plus... This company did a fantastic job for my move. I will say I had a couple of phone conversations that were helpful but came off as a little bit rude. However, that rudeness was not felt by anyone I met with in person, including the movers and the person who came out to evaluate my needs. Overall, the move was quick and seamless and I thought the guys did a great job! I would definitely use them again. read more

We contacted Tobin and Sons for our upcoming move the end of May. At first we thought the price was more than we wanted to spend, but we had a good feeling and heard positive things about them. After a review of what we needed moved, they sent three men to move us and alloted ten hours. The men worked very hard lifting, moving boxes, taking apart furniture, and reassembling it as well. They continued all day, even though the temperature felt like 90. Communication was excellent. By the end of the day, my husband and I both agreed the movers were worth more than what they charged. We would definitely recommend Tobin and Sons to others. read more

Update! I was reading my old reviews and figured I should update. Went to court with All my pictures of everything they destroyed, and all my receipts for the things they broke. I was so nervous as I've never been in court. Judge told them they were crazy to think they had any right to ask me for a dime. The judge followed by saying I should take them to court because cost of damages far exceeded the moving costs. I never did cause I couldn't be bothered. I used the money we would have paid them to replace the plasma and the bookcases my dad managed to fix and make look presentable. Should have also wrote In the review that one of the movers (a toothless gentleman) kept hugging me. On the 3rd time my fiancé finally said to back off. Looking back now i can laugh at the situation but at the time i was horrified. I usually wouldn't write bad reviews but its a wonder this place is still In Business. read more

I couldn't have received better service!!!! The professionalism of the crew was remarkable. I was quoted a time frame and the work was completed an hour sooner than what we discussed. They wrapped every single of piece of furniture to protect from scratches as well as the rain that day. The guys laid down and taped cardboard protecting not only the floors in my new house but the floors in the house I was leaving too. Five starts isn't enough!!! read more

NO stars - FIND ANOTHER MOVER!!!! They tell you they can meet deliver dates; they don't tell you your furniture sits on a hot truck in a hot warehouse for a week before it moves. TWO WEEKS late with delivery - my family lived in an empty house. When it finally arrived (after NO communication of the delay from Tobin or BEKIN), my furniture was ruined. Piano had permanent utility marks on it, wood chipped off, sofas broken, dining room set ruined. Add me to the list of Zero stars if it were possible. There only attribute is the nice woman I spoke with on my original call. We had a major snafu with our closing dates so we had to reschedule our move three days before the closing thus screwing our original movers out of 3 days work. They were booked the next week we needed them. (very good local company). I called Tobin they came out the next day and emailed me an outrageous quote. The follow up call was jaw dropping " well your in a jam with no movers so it is what it is". I excitedly said I am not in a jam I can actually go to the local Home Depot and grab 5 guys rent a Uhaul and be 3000 less. A move from Salem to Beverly and the quote looked like a phone number. I then read the reviews here and am so glad we didn't use them. I talked to two others that did use them because they are affiliated with a national company and were disgusted. I am shocked that this guy isn't in jail for fraud. Expect to have 50 % added to your estimate when you get your final bill. The movers will threaten not to leave until you sign it and they take you to court instead of return your calls. Like an idiot I agreed to compromise which is what I would have been willing to do anyway and it hurt my perfect credit score. 6 other people were also in Peabody court that day with the same story. I honestly wish I could give this moving company zero stars. Do not hire them! They moved me from my apartment into a new home. My furniture was 6 months old and in perfect condition. Not after they were done! Absolutely all on my furniture was damaged. They cracked a protective piece of glass I had cut to fit my bureau. They literally wrapped the glass in a comforter, even after I asked them to use a box. But they told me the box was an extra charge. I told them I didn't mind. I placed numerous phone calls to the company and was told they were on vacation. Complete run around! This was the absolute worst experience I have ever had with a company, and cannot be trusted. read more

Tobins moved us back in 2010 from Peabody to Lynnfield. Had no issues or problems with them for that move. At that time we put a few pieces of furniture in their storage facility. They recently moved from their Salem, MA facility to their new location in Beverly. However, they did move our things to the new location without letting us know in advance they were doing so. We had no idea this was being done until after the fact. We would have preferred a notification in advance that they would be moving our things. Other than that, they seem to be okay. We will be taking our things out of their storage facility soon, so at that time we'll see what kind of condition they are in. Hopefully, everything will be fine. read more

These guys are awful movers. They were not careful with my stuff at all, and as a result most of my furniture got banged. I specifically asked them to wrap the furniture with the shrink-wrap that professional movers used and they didn't. They could have instead wrapped blankets around the pieces and used tape to hold the blankets in place, but they didn't do that either. As a result, my leather furniture got scratched, and my wooden furniture got knicks and bangs. They even dropped my bed frame, which got damaged. Do not hire these guys. read more

We had Tobin move our research lab from IN to CO, on short notice. They were absolutely outstanding, prompt, professional, with great follow up and superb care of our refrigerated units and ultrafreezers, etc. They provided backup freezers in the truck, they crated sensitive equipment and delivered everything in great condition. I had a very bad experience with my move with Tobin and Sons.. Multiple peices of furniture were damaged and they claimed they weren't covered by insurance. They wouldn'nt take my calls or respond to emails. Terrible service. They didnt care at all that they damaged my furniture, some were antiques too. Use another mover. read more

WARNING! Do not use this company for your moving needs. They lost several valuable items of ours (approximate value $3,600). I have spent weeks writing and calling in an unsuccessful attempt to get them to accept any responsibility for the missing items. Eventually, they simply refused to take my calls.
