We loved that Trowt was a local owned movino company. The owner came to our condo to give us an estimate and was very helpful! The crew of three guys came to our place and moved everything from Salem, MA to Kittery, ME in 1/2 a day. They were quick and safe with our items. My only qualm was that one of the guys were complaining about his back hurting and it was a bit uncomfortable as they were being paid to help us move our boxes. I wish I could give no stars. I moved last August (2020) but the reason I waited so long to review was that I did not want to jeopardize any investigation by the Better Business Bureau. I contacted this company for a move (mind you, it was only a few streets over). John came out to assess what I needed to move and he assured me that 3 men and one truck would do the job. I was given instructions of how to pack, how to label boxes, etc. I followed the instructions...despite that, the movers tossed (and that is an accurate description) of boxes in the basement. When I noticed this, I commented on the bedroom boxes being in the basement and they moved some of them but not all. They also broke several items....and the kicker here is, they just left them broken in the basement. They did not even tell me. When I noticed and called them on it, they attempted to fix the broken pieces. I contacted the owners by phone. They told me to email and send pics which I did several times. Then, ghosted....nothing....no response to calls or emails. I then contacted the Better Business Bureau and reported them. I was hoping for some resolution. However, after 1 year, the BBB was also ghosted by the company. I am told there is nothing they can do except place them on their 'list' for a few years. So frustrating....so, now I am taking to social media to let everyone know that they should avoid this company for their move. read more

I chose to hire Trowt for my move because I wanted to support a small business in my area with a good reputation. I hate to leave a negative review for that reason, but I want to make others aware of what I have been through. Especially while moving during a pandemic, which is already stressful enough. Based on my experience, I do not recommend working with them. However, it appears most customers have had positive experiences, so if you do choose to hire Trowt based on that, I strongly recommend that you double or triple check that your move is confirmed for the right day/time to make sure you're not left to scramble last minute like I was. I scheduled my small move (literally four pieces of furniture) three weeks in advance. I was on the phone with them for a good 10-15 minutes giving them all of my information and confirming everything. I took the day of the move off of work, waited around for 30 minutes after the scheduled time and no one showed up. I called Trowt and they said they did not have me on the schedule. I was frustrated, but luckily, unlike most of their customers (I imagine), I had a flexible moving date. They said they should be able to reschedule for later that day or within a few days and that they would be in touch. Great! Well, five days later I hadn't heard a thing. I then called back again and explained the situation and finally got the answer that there's nothing they could do because they're booked up until mid September. I can only comment on the scheduling and customer service aspects of Trowt as they did not end up moving anything for me. Overall, a very frustrating and disappointing experience. read more

I'd heard good things about Trowt so called them about an upcoming move. The man who answered (Jonathan) was very nice and asked me to email him with the details of my furniture so he could give me a quote. He gave me his email, I repeated it back to him to ensure it was accurate, and sent an email about a half hour. No response after three days so I sent a follow-up. Still no response and it's been weeks now. I didn't get a bounceback so I don't think I made a typo. I mentioned this to a local realtor I know and she said, "Oh, Trowt - they never check their email!" Not even when they specifically tell prospective customers to email them, apparently. That's unprofessional and, frankly, inexcusable for any business to operate that way post 1996. Fortunately, I found another company to hire that was prompt and responsive. read more

Moving day came and one of their movers parked his personal muscle car in a privately owned spot in the complex and got towed. Do not trust Trowt movers. Their team stole things from us during our move with at least one item being retrieved by the police from a pawn shop. It took the owners three days to return our call after the theft and three months later, they will not return phone calls to make us whole after the insurance settlement. If I could give more than 5 stars, I would! Mike and Miguel came to my house to move a new refrigerator from the garage to the kitchen, and they went above and beyond! They were very careful with the refrigerator and with the walls and floors in the house. They worked with me to brainstorm some issues that came up (due to a weird setup in my house), and now I have my new refrigerator in the house, and I can start using it. I'm so happy with Trowt Moving. I have also used Trowt for moving from one apartment to another, and they were so careful with my stuff and also with both buildings. read more

Shady, fair warning! They will not honor their quotes. They quoted us for packing ( I had a broken wrist) and moving, and we agreed on a price. Then. Moving day it rained, the guys sat in the truck outside our building, charging us for the time. The worst issue is that after moving day the owner tried to run our credit card additional charges without our knowledge or consent for what he said were "more packing and boxes than he had expected." Well, that's why you came out for a walk-through and a written estimate. Awful experience, and I would have pursued legal remedies if we weren't absolutely exhausted from the whole upheaval. This company is a disgrace! They damaged an expensive piece of furniture, overcharged me for an entire hour while the crew ate lunch and when the move ran late they brought two extra guys to help on my move (without asking me) HOWEVER they charged me for a 4 man crew instead of a 3 man crew for 2 hours. When I questioned it they claimed it was because they had another job to go to! This was only the beginning of my problems! The movers never showed me the contract until they were asking for a credit card at the end of the move. The contract has a "declaration of value" section that allows the customer to select insurance coverage - however if you don't select any option they pay any damaged items at a rate of $1.25 a pound. This is mighty convenient for Trowt Movers if they never produce the contract until at the end of the move and they damage a expensive item! Amazing the unprofessionalism this company displayed all while damaging the old condo knocking down a exit sign that I had to hire an electrician to re-wire and install a brand new sign for as well as file a law suit against this company for he damage to my furniture due to their lack of care for my items. Trust me do yourself a favor - higher another company that is in the same price point - Look at Gentle Giant or T.E. Anderson - don't be fooled by this company! Peter Trowt will not return your calls, nor will he keep his word. He promised to refund me for the hour of work and the time his crew overcharged me on the bill - over 5 weeks later the check has never reach me! He is a LIAR. Trowt Movers did an excellent job moving my one-bedroom apartment in Beverly into a storage pod that was going to be shipped to CA. The woman who handles the scheduling and office-y stuff was a pleasure to speak to and was very knowledgeable. The two guys that they sent were super friendly and they were so FAST! They were pros at filling up these weird storage pods and and they worked so efficiently that they finished earlier than expected, which saved me time and money. Before we left I hired them to do some in-home moving for a client, and also passed their info along to a family member who is making a local move. I know moving is the worst, but you can definitely trust Trowt to make it a little bit easier! read more

The crew called ahead to confirm our plans, showed up on time, and completed the move quickly and carefully. They went above and beyond, helping put furniture together and move things around until my dad's new little apartment was set up right. They transferred valuable and sentimental possessions across three states, nothing was broken, scratched, or damaged in any way, and they were courteous and considerate to my entire family. These guys were fantastic. Peter who gave us our quote was extremely nice and the moving crew were friendly, funny, and most important: efficient. These guys cleared out our two bedroom apartment in no time and came in well under the given estimate. Also very important: They packed our stuff very securely - nothing was broken. I really don't understand the couple of horrible reviews on here, we had a great experience with them. Perhaps it's not as good if something gets broken. However, one thing I did take away from the other reviews was that it's not readily apparent that your default breakage coverage is $.60 per pound. You can get more if you ask for it, for a charge, but it wasn't offerred. Also, as one of the other reviews mentions, they're pretty lax on a written agreement. Our quote was considered our agreement. So, if that means something to you, ask for it up front. read more

They don't have you sign a contract ahead or put a deposit down to hold the day in January - slower season - so I asked them to email me the details ... date etc. This flexibility worked for us because the people buying our house kept changing the closing date . The two-man crew showed up late, but it was due to the rain/sleet/snow yesterday...completely understandable since traffic was absurd. I was charged for the normal transit time out to my location. After the pickup the guys worked non-stop in the rain/snow until the job was complete. It was slippery and cold, but they managed to get everything in the house as I directed without touching any of our newly painted walls. We are moving to No Shore from Lexington. Our furniture will be in storage for 30 days.Recieved two estimates from moving companies. Peter Trowt did the walk thru and estimate. Estimate was competitive. Company provided a 28 ft container for move and storage, so there is time saving over unloading into wharehouse and reloading. Estimate was for 5-6 hrs for move to Beverly wharehouse including transportation each way. Three man crew arrived on time and did not stop until complete. Charge was right on the estimate and container was packed full. Very curtious crew and no damage. This was the longer of the two moves. Next move will be shorter. Expect next move will go smoothly. We have been trying since June 4 to get in touch with Trowt and they have not returned any of our phone calls or responded to a letter we sent. Beware. They do not honor their quotes. Make sure you specifically get everything in writing including their minimum charge on weekdays and weekends. It's $250 on weekdays but $500 on weekends. They will not explicitly tell you this and the quote does not detail minimums. Insist on including that. I have had no luck getting a call back from them on this and it's now been almost one month. I thought this was important to share since moving is such a hectic and important time for people: we had the company out to give us a quote on a 3.5 mile move. Four days later I called and left a message to confirm Trowt's services. After 3 days without a response my husband left a second voicemail. Two additional days passed with no response so we called again and were told by the woman on the phone that our moving date was no longer available and that the unreturned phone calls were "neither here nor there" since she was on vacation. Might be nice to update your voicemail if nobody will be getting back to clients. She then said she'd re-check the calendar and get back to us and now (shocker!) we haven't heard back. We have used this company 3 times now. The first two times were fine. Everything went smoothly and the price was right. The third time, however, things did not go smoothly. The movers did damage to our front door and knocked over a trellis. I called the owner 5 times before I actually got him on the phone. He said that his guys didn't do any of the damage, but that they would come out and look at it. I never heard from him again. Basically, they damaged my property and are unwilling to do anything about it. I have given them more than ample opportunity to make it right and they have not done so. I will never use them again and would advise anyone else who cares about their property to do the same. read more

Getting in touch with him, after that, was difficult ( I had to call him to get the low ball estimate). The moving staff were also charming yet swindlers. They convinced us to buy them lunch ( and took more than an hour to eat it, and we paid for it). Much to our ignorance, we generously tipped them. What a mistake. We have never dealt with a more difficult, dishonest company in our lives. They do not return phone calls, they twist your words, and try to blame the customer. If your furniture gets ripped or damaged ( which ours did) , be prepared to fight for reimbursement. We had another move after our August move with Trowt this past December. We dealt with a reputable company and our move was a pleasure. What a difference from our move with Trowt. read more

Trowt moved us about two years ago-A local move - we must not have had the best crew because even though they worked hard they did not seem to know how to put our furniture back together properly. The best example is the fact that when we got in our bed after a long day of moving to finally go to sleep it completely fell apart as if we were in a cartoon. They hadn't put the hardware back in and had simply leaned the pieces together. When we called them the next day they did come out and had lost all of the hardware but they were able to temporarily fix it so the bed stayed together. But the bed has never been the same -we've had to try to reinforce It over the years and just tonight it finally crashed to the ground once again in that same spot. Thanks so much Trowt-it's the gift that keeps on giving. I should mention they also dropped the bin of our Christmas ornaments and never mentioned it -three months after we moved when I open the bin I found broken pieces of ornaments along with what looks like moving truck floor debris - the type of rags they had been using on the truck and a bunch of moving tape. Terrible. Worst moving experience I've ever had. When I called them they said they'd give us a gift card to buy more ornaments. No thanks. I wish I would've known that our special memories and ornaments our children made had been broken. As I sit here in the broken bed tonight thinking about the money I'll have to spend on purchasing a new bed I wish I would've just spent it on gentle giant instead. Finally many of our bins were wet because it had rained really hard in the couple of days our stuff was on the truck and it must've leaked or something -they were carrying in wet bins to our basement and I had to stop them frequently and dry them off because soaking wet bins in a hot August basement are not a good combination. read more

My move from a 2 family to a 1 family required experienced movers and they sent young men who were prob working for the summer. I have a canopy bed that was taken completely apart. Unfortunately, when it was put back together, it was wrong. the movers did send someone to my home to fix it (a week later). He was able to put the pieces in the correct places but the screw connecting back head board got stripped. I now have to pay a carpenter to drill into the board and replace, hopefully, the bolt so that the screw is not sticking 6 inches out of the side of the bed. I WOULD not recommend these movers if you have any custom, antique or unusual pieces of furniture. read more

Although the mover team was timely. Once I began to check boxes which I packed, the smaller box clearly marked "Fragile, china dishes", was placed in the corner of my place with large boxes surrounding it. I retrieved the box and just picking it up, it was clear that the china places were smashed. I had wrapped 2x with bubble, and surrounded inside box with bubble & Heavyweight tissue. The following Monday, I phoned Peter Trowt, owner, and relayed the issue. He said he would check the team and see if they remember. Really? I exclaimed. The mere idea that they would make an admission. Sure. I stated the box had to have been identified as having broken things inside ... since they, or one, carried this box up 2.5 flights of stairs. Then they, or he, placed the box in an hidden spot where I would not see immediately. I asked Peter to refund me a small $ amount just to assuage my anguish as these dishes were passed down from grandmother. Finally, he phoned and stated he would ask his insurance co. That was weeks ago. Surely a very profitable company can award or provide a small pittance to make a customer happy and avoid a yelp negative review. It seems not. Of course my insurance (homeowner) has a $1,000 deductible. Beware of Trowt .... they are not consumer friendly. read more

Everything went pretty smoothly until a living room chair was delivered with a 'shredded' skirt on July 24, 2014. After repeated calls to Peter Trowt and many promises, the chair was finally sent to an upholsterer on September 17, 2014 for repair. The chair was returned on October 9, 2014 in unusable condition. I called that same day to express my displeasure and was, again, promised that the situation would be addressed. I have had no further communication from Peter Trowt. A letter was sent on November 15, 2014 asking for money to defray the cost of having the chair reupholstered and that has been ignored as well. Since then Beverly Bootstraps (a local charity) has rejected the chair and attempts to give it away on Craigslist have failed as well. I am still waiting for Trowt Moving and Storage to remedy this situation, but history tells me not to hold my breath. read more

The third was out-of-state, and someone came to the house to do an estimate, we discussed a range of dates, and thought everything was good to go. He never called back to confirm; I emailed; I called the office twice and was assured someone would get back. No one ever did. Because of the moving crew's professionalism and promptness, the move was a very smooth process. The moving crew were all courteous, polite, and hard-working. Nothing got lost or broken, and it was overall not stressful. Trowt Movers were also kind enough to drop off some boxes and packing material the night before so I could pack some things myself before the day of the move. I would recommend them to anyone looking to move on the North Shore. Basically, on my last move with them I was overcharged by a half hour. I didn't notice it until I had time to confirm their start time (they picked some items up at a different location first). When I brought this to Peter Trowt''s (the owner) attention, he assured me he would take care of it. After numerous phone calls, he stopped taking my calls and would not call me back. Really? Using Trowt Movers was the worst experience I ever had. They were supposed to be at my home at 8:30 AM and when they had not arrived by 9 I called Trowt offices and was told it must be traffic as they left "quite a while ago". I called again at 9:30 and was told they would call the movers and get an update and call me back - never received a call back. I called again at 10:15 and this time was told traffic but they would call the movers and call me back. Peter Trowt and son were the ones I spoke with regarding estimated time movers would get there - and neither called me back. When the movers arrived at 10:35 I asked them what time they left the Trowt office - they told me they left at 9 AM as no one ever told them they were supposed to be at my house at 8:30. This made me late for my legal meeting and other move related meetings and cost me several hundred dollars. When I complained to Peter Trowt I was told I shouldn't schedule closing on a moving day - how absurd is that for taking responsibility. When I first scheduled Trow in April (my move was in June), they told me they could arrange for my storage unit in either Beverly or Manchester - this is what I agreed to on the paperwork. I told them either of those locations were fine and convenient to my temporary relocation home. On the day of the move, the movers told me they did not know which storage facility they were delivering my things to so I called Trot offices again and this time received no answer. I left a urgent VM to call me right away. Still no call back the next day so I called Trowt again - it took 3 more calls that day to get the correct info regarding strorage facility and contact information. I was told they moved my things to Ipswich as there were no avail units in either location we agreed upon. I asked them why they did not tell me this in advance and more importantly why they didn't reserve the unit in the locations promised as I had contracted with them two months ahead of my move. I was told by both Peter Trowt and his son not to worry as the Town location they did choose had a great new facility. Yes it did, but it is TOTALLY OUT OF MY WAY and INCONVENIENT TO MY NEW RESIDENCE. Again - Trowt showed no sensitivity or commitment to their promises, or the customer's convenience. Also I learned from the Storage Facility Owner - who was extremely helpful and had great integrity - that Trowt had left my things in a unit and had not secured it with a lock - and they did not tell me where my things were so I could not get there to place a lock. The Storage Facility Owner was again excellent and placed a lock on my unit for protection. Now that is customer service Mr. Trowt. I WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND THIS MOVER. read more

I recently moved from Haverhill to Beverly. I was referred to Trowt Movers by a friend. Peter came out to run an estimate, which was a great price for the amount moved, and Jon later reviewed the estimate with my wife and I. The crew arrived promptly as scheduled, despite a change in our closing time. Our move also took place the day after the first snow storm. The move went smoothly without any issues. Our furniture was wrapped in pads and loaded very quickly. The unload went just as smoothly, despite the weather. The guys were personable, patient, and very careful with our furniture and boxes. They even set up our beds and dining room table. After unpacking for the past month, I can confidently report that NOTHING was damaged or scratched. I would highly recommend Trowt to any potential movers. The staff from movers to owners were extremely helpful and honest, and a portion of the estimate from Gentle giant and Tobin. read more
