We were seated then promptly greeted by our waitress, Ashley. She was very nice and attentive and even has her "You should try this" speech down to a science! I chose one of Ashley's suggestions, the bacon gouda omelette, along with the jalapeño cheddar toast and cheddar grits. Cheddar overload much? Every item was totally satisfying and I would order them all again. My only suggestion would be to maybe put a sauce over the omelette with some garnish. I'll start by saying I prefer Toast Ferndale over Toast Birmingham, not that there is anything wrong with either. Actually, I prefer Ferndale over Birmingham generally. Toast Ferndale is only open for breakfast and lunch and is smaller and more quaint. The breakfasts are delicious and I've never moved past them into the lunch arena. My last trip to Toast was with my parents. I had an omelet which was delicious. I normally get the fried potatoes, but this time I tried the cheese grits. Both were very delicious and its difficult to decide which I prefer. My mother had the grilled cheese and raved about it. She even said that the grilled cheese was better than the grilled cheese served at Cafe Muse. She said it wasn't greasy at all, but had a great taste and flavor. I love that Toast always serves unique specials every day. It's a charming place to eat and I get there often. On the Weekends there can be a long wait for a table. I recommend going during the week. My friends and I do exactly that for Fancy Breakfast Thursday (FBT) and we're never disappointed with Toast. read more

YUM! I came here for brunch with a friend Saturday morning, I had been to the Birmingham location before but never have eaten here at the Ferndale location. They were able to seat us right away which was fantastic because I was starving. The chicken & waffles were BOMB. I have lived in Atlanta where they know how to make southern food and what I had at Toast definitely reminded me of that. The chicken was cooked perfectly and was crispy and hot, with the waffles melting in your mouth. I'm not a huge gravy person (gravy comes on top) but they were more than willing to put it on the side. This was quality stuff, and for the price ($12 I believe) you really can't beat it. It's worth every penny and you're more than likely to have some leftovers to take home. There are a lot of good brunch places in Ferndale, so definitely add this to the rotation. It's more expensive, but for the chicken & waffles especially it's worth it. read more

I have been coming to toast for a while, and while still good things have changed recently. The food is different and just doesn't have the same flavor it used to have. Last time I was there I had the Monkey Cakes and my friend had an omelette with home fries and I had the delicious banana coffee. While still good, it just isn't as good as it was. We started with the banana bread coffee made by white pine coffee and it was so good we bought a bag to go. We shared the bananas foster pancakes and the eggs benedict, and it was an awesome sweet and savory combo. I dined I'm at Toast restaurant not too long ago. My friends and I decided to go and planned for a Saturday late morning, which of course is probably the busiest time for this restaurant. We waited about two hours to be seated, but we knew going in there would be long wait, so it wasn't too bad. Once we were seated, we were very hungry by that time of course! Recently, strictly breakfast/lunch (but necessarily brunch) restaurants have spread around Michigan, Toast being conveniently located on Woodward Ave. In New York, breakfast/lunch places are second nature, in metro Detroit, however, it's novel. The novelty associated with dining at a place like Toast in a neighborhood deemed Fashionable Ferndale, has clearly not worn off. The restaurant, although undoubtedly cute with its shabby-chic decor, did not cater well to my needs. The tomato soup that I ordered had bacon in it and even though I only smelled it and made a face and then complained, I was still charged for a soup which I could not and did not consume. More so, the service was lousy and the food overpriced. A much better and tastier alternative is the Berkley Breakfast Cafe (which also serves lunch and dinner, but their breakfast is the best!) located on Coolidge Highway. read more
