I like it here because they are stocked with a good selection of home items as well as seasonal ones. I just hope that you never have to try anything on. The fitting room attendant for the ladies is dry and rude. I'm pretty sure she worked in a prison before, the way she gave instructions- or at least I felt like I was going into one. Anyway, I think she caught onto my reaction to her actions and became polite as I was leaving. I honestly didn't have anything nice to say so I didn't say anything at all. Good luck. read more

This TJ Max is above the Burlington Coat Factory. During my visit, one of the escalators was closed, so people had to wait for people coming from the other direction to complete first to proceed upstairs. They should have posted a sign for an elevator. Maybe they did, but I didn't see it. I only visited the men's section for Chicago sports gear. It was easy to find, though the selection of T-shirts were limited. They did have a lot of different team beanies. Which was fine, since you can never have enough head gear. The checkout process was fast and I found the cashier to be friendly. The only down part was having to wait for the person walking upstairs to complete so I could walk downstairs to leave the store. read more

Live for it. I have been going to TJMaxx since the 80s! I was a little kid and my mom was a fan. Now I'm in Chicago with 3 grown kids and I still love it. Vernon hills shop is ok. Taxes lower, great home and hair appliances, men's not bad. Basically good if it's all you've got. The Northbrook shop is a Runway and absolutely worth a visit. Good staff! They give you the time and the help, which we don't even expect here. Jewelry and home staff especially helpful. Evanston on Golf Rd. staff is not helpful at all, excepting the registers, where they are very friendly. The stock is great tho, especially women's. They always have some great true designer bags, not just Michael Kors and Ralph Lauren, as if we can't find good prices on those at Macy's. As if we wanted them! Tahari, Vince, Rag and Bone, Michael Kors (his dresses are good), and Nanette Lenore, just to name a few in the women's dept. Shoes include Rag and Bone, Paul Greene and more truly high end brands. Mens used to be full of surprises but now it's not unexpected, even if you do find designers. The housewares are great- you can find Krups and other appliances, as well as Sferra etc on occasion. Ample parking in their own lot. The line is not an issue, including when I go on the occasional Saturday, and Old Orchard Mall is 2 miles away with one of the BEST Nordstrom Rack stores right across the street. read more

My rating: 3.5 stars, even though I would say the inventory here is worth four (4) stars. Warning: if you have experienced claustrophobic symptoms in your medical history, please be VERY careful when shopping at this T.J. Maxx location. This T.J. Maxx location is extremely high in volume. However, they do have the best inventory in all departments. Especially the men's department, they have lots of cold-weather accessories, men's clothing, and men's bags. They also have a great selection of women's accessories. I saw many faux-fur scarves and wraps that would get you SO ready for the winter in Chicago (or in Canada...perhaps in North Pole). Their women's coats department was average. I wanted something more unique in terms of the style of the coat, but I couldn't find it (I wanted a long trench coat, but all I saw were pea coats, sports jackets, leather jackets, and fur coats). You could find a coat within $100. In fact, there were plenty that fell in that price range. It could even find something that was in the 60- dollar range. Many Keurig k-cups were on clearance. Check the expiration dates before making any purchase. The sales associates were merely cashiers; the check-out line typically resembles like a millipede. Thus, don't expect any sales associate who would be willing to help you ON the sales floor. My hubby was asked by a customer to assist her to get something down since he's 6 foot and 1 inch-tall. Patrons are more likely helpful if you can profile whoever appears to be nice. The entire venue was super hot, so remove your coat, scarf, and hat and get comfy. Store review: TJmaxx is a hit or miss store. Occasionally you will strike gold and find a quality name brand clothing item at a cheap price. It's fairly disorganized and messy, but I've never had a problem with finding what I wanted here. Definitely be careful about what you buy; they have broken items on the shelves, and the cosmetics are sometimes broken and/or used, so take some time to check out what you're spending your money on. I mostly go here for clothes, but they almost always have cute bags that are reasonably priced. The staff is generally courteous, and if you go during the afternoon on a weekend, you'll be waiting in line quite a while. However, even at 10 AM, the line isn't too bad. read more

I like that they revamped this place. Since it is so huge, it's easy for customers to leave a mess everywhere. Granted, it's still a bit messy, but more organized than it used to be. The discounted/clearance section hidden away in the back entrance is kind of shockingly bad. It looks more like a garbage corner than anything. I don't know if that's store policy where you have to sell it or if you can just chuck things away that need to be thrown away. I like TJ Maxx because it's one of the few designer markdown stores in the area other than Nordstrom Rack. read more

Sometimes there is a great selection of products at very affordable prices. Pet products, household items and other things are much cheaper here than anywhere else which is nice. Unfortunately I have never seen both escalators working at the same time; at least one of them is always broken. This can get pretty annoying if you have a lot of bags or if it is crowded. Overall, like any TJ Maxx it is pretty hit or miss but usually it's a hit. read more

I grew up with TJ Maxx's and generally LOVE the chain, but this store is the pits. Literally. And it takes a lot for me to say that, because I bargain-hunting is my forte. An ideal afternoon for me is sifting through the racks at a Marshalls or TJ Maxx or Ross, topped off with a trip to Goodwill or Salvation Army. But this store is insanely cluttered and insanely disorganized. I wandered around for 20minutes trying to find the women's dressing room on my first trip here, because it's tucked away in some smelly dark corner of the store. The claustrophobia is overwhelming. The employees are not at all helpful and generally pretty rude (though I suppose if I had to work at a zoo like this, I may be too....) They do have a large selection of women's dresses, which I like, and a huge array of handbags. I can usually pick up a Calvin Klein or Ralph Lauren dress for work for around $50. But if I have to take my pick, I much prefer the Marshall's off of Michigan to this store. read more

Not sure why people are so hard on this place. Went here for the first time today and was happy with it. Got a sweet Michael Kors purse, and a big shopping bag. Customer service was great and the staff really nice. It was though a Wednesday and the weekend help might not live up to this. The store is a mess, and the customers can be really tough to deal with. Several times I seen people getting loud over getting bumped in the aisles. That can be a little scary if you are not used to how people act in this part of the city. Overall, I will be back. read more

As a TJ Maxx its ok, particularly for one in the city. I've been to larger ones in suburbs. It was near to my hotel so I wandered over here after dinner to pick up some sweat pants so I could use the hotel's fitness room. The 1-star is for the restrooms. I'd been looking around for a bit and decided to use the restroom. I walked in and immediately walked out - not just of the restroom but the whole store. Absolutely foul and clearly had not had any attention for some time (I was there about 7:30pm). I'll be polite and leave it at that. This location is OK. I've long frequented the TJX stores having the company credit card. Messy atmosphere I can get over. I know how ruthless customers can be as a veteran retail manager myself. It's the staff that is very hit or miss (one fitting room lady is very sweet). The first time my husband and I came in we had an hour before closing. He had 2 things he wanted to try on and they told him the men's fitting room was closed and he couldn't try things on. Closed? While the store is still open? Unless it's a crime scene, customers should be able to use a fitting room during business hours. This is laziness. Clearly, the employees recovered the fitting rooms and don't want to clean it up again later. Well, it's only hurting them because we just bought the pants without trying them on and they did not fit so we just returned them later and left without looking around again. Oh well. Agreeing with another yelper, the bathrooms ARE terrible. I've breathed through my mouth countless times. Air freshener would be a simple solution...or cleaning. read more

I frequent this location on my lunch break. It's very consistent, which is nice. Moderately clean and organized, lines move fast, pretty good selection. I accept with all (my beloved) Marshallses and TJ Maxxes that it's hit or miss. This is why I go 2-3 times a week to various locations. This department store is located on a main street and shared a building with a Burlington. It doesn't have a very large selection, but it's great in a pinch. Particularly if you're low on supplies and in a pinch. The staff is helpful and polite, and it seems like they keep the store pretty clean. Although I must note, I did not visit the dressing rooms, so--take that as you will. Great prices. Pretty good selection. No digging necessary, which is something that I despise and just won't do. But, if your luggage has broken, you've run out of undies, or if you need a few shirts for your husband for a low price pretty quickly, this is your stop. This TJ Maxx has more crap stuffed in its doors than any other I've seen. It's a miracle I managed to stumble upon the lovely Theory light sweater now hanging in my closet with a tag that says 'originally $190; our price $69' with a red clearance sticker over it that reads $39. I keep searching for the inconspicuous hole that landed it in the creepy clearance corner, but it appears to be just perfect :) Mind you, the ENTIRE time I was there, that damn alarm kept sounding, interrupting my shopping experience even more than the cluttered aisles and ignorant fellow shoppers. In hindsight, it was worth it, and I should comment on their enormous home goods section too. But gosh, without the alarm and minus at least 10,000 articles of worthless clothing, I may return earlier than a year from now. read more

I love a good deal as much as the next recent college graduate who wants stylish name brand clothing. So, I naturally enjoy stores like TJ Maxx that sell great designers like Kate Spade, Michael Kors, and Ralph Lauren at a significantly discount prices. However, there are thrift stores or other TJ Maxx locations that are cleaner and more well-organized than this one. I should have known I was in for trouble on my most recent visit to this location when the already narrow escalator was broken and the down escalator to leave was closed off. This left customers both entering and leaving the store to use the same escalator, which was pretty difficult. The clothes are not organized the best, but it was decent. On this trip, I was looking for professional skirts and cardigans, and found very few options. My friend, who was looking for dresses, also did not find anything she wanted. She said, "Some of these items look promising on the rack, but fit weirdly on me." I'm sure there is a reason some of these name brand clothes made it to TJ Maxx to begin with. But then, the stench. There was a foul-smelling homeless person with tattered clothes walk through here. It was awful; I held my breath as he passed. As he made his way to the men's restroom, I thanked my lucky stars I was a woman. After trying on clothes for a while, my friend and I went to use the restroom. We walked in and DEAR SWEET LORD. The stench of the bathroom was overwhelming. My friend went to a stall, then ran out, yelling back "I can't do it!" as she made her escape. The only reason this gets two stars is because I would go through hell and back to get a great deal on a high quality item that fits well. This place is hell, but the few times I have found a great piece of clothing, it made everything worth it. This store always seems junky and disorganized to me, and as much as I love a bargain I usually avoid it. I just needed to small items so I thought I'd just run in and out. I was able to get what I needed, and the long line did move quickly. The line is set up so you have to walk past all these cluttered shelves loaded with junk I guess the store management considers impulse buys (has anyone ever bought those bags of "gourmet" chocolates or Jelly Bellys? Gross!). Even so, you might have to wait for the cashiers to wrap up the personal conversations among themselves before they call you over. read more

Ehhh.. it's a TJ Maxx. I love TJ Maxx, don't get me wrong. But, this TJ Maxx has always been known to met to be a mess. They've absolutely improved over the last several years, which is why this is getting three stars. Their store almost always seems disorganized, but like I said, it seems to be improving. Here are a few tips: 1.) Do not, for the love of God, buy makeup here. I can promise you it's probably been used. Almost ALL of their makeup is usually open, tampered with, or broken! I even saw a Mac lipstick set broken into with piece of the set missing! Their eye-shadows? Try again. People take off the plastic film and dive right in! Nail polish? Nah, it's been opened and use! On the off chance that you rifle through the makeup and find something salvageable, props to you! 2.) On that note; their makeup brushes usually appear to be fine. Like, they're definitely always opened but no one really messes with them. If you purchase a brush or other makeup tool, just wash it and you'll be cool. 3.) If you're fat, good luck. Their plus size section is pretty teeny. I mean, it's okay, but like most TJ Maxx's that exist, theirs is very small. It's like half a rack. Their PJ section has no plus size. It's cool, it's cool. 4.) Going here on the weekend is pure hell. Seriously. It's so crowded, everyone is irritable in line, and you can't really look at the impulse sections because people will be quick to cut in front of you. Overall the staff seems overwhelmed and irritable. But, they're attentive when needed. I know how TJ Maxx operates so I'm not too angry going here. I go here for a lot of gifts/presents/random assortments. I could walk around TJ Maxx for a few hours and still enjoy it. read more

This store sucks. Customer Service is non-existent. Lines are ridiculously slow. When you are actuallly called upon, (cashiers here take their sweet time doing things- they do not give one rat's ass about how long you've been standing there) THEN your cashier further prolongs your wait by making a personal phone call to her daughter's school while you stand there. In doing so, she misses the radio going off, giving her the code she needed to make your return. A 15 minute errand then quickly becomes 40 through a whole HOST of errors. That was just one. I am absolutely appalled at the complete and utter lack of regard for the way this store treats its customers, as a whole. Save yourself the sheer frustration and shop elsewhere. read more

I go to TJ Maxx for the deals. It's always too crowded and it's never organized and there's always broken things on the shelves, but sometimes the clearance-priced items make it worthwhile. For example, I found a large painting for my apartment for only $34 and a pair of running shoes for $20 on my last visit. Sure I had to climb over piles of shoes on the floor and get run over by a crazy old lady with a cart, but that's part of the adventure. However, they really have the WORST employees. In the fitting rooms, the woman doesn't greet you she simply rips the hangers out of your hands and takes off down the hall to a room. The same with the cashiers, no greeting they just ring up your stuff and continue to talk to each other. This last visit was the worst yet. I went up to the register where the girl silently rang up my items until another employee walked behind me coming back from her break. Then my cashier proceeded to YELL to her about their lockers. It went something like this: Cashier: Hey! Don't put all that shit on top of my shit. There's McDonald's in there. Other worker: You've got McDonald's?! Cashier: Yeah! So don't put all of that stuff on my shit! Mind you, I am still standing there signing my credit card slip. I have no real problem with profanity, but it didn't even seem to cross her mind that she was still with a customer. In fact, she slid me the credit card slip and continued to talk. When I finished signing I went to hand her the slip and it was like I wasn't even there, no "have a nice day", no nothing. She literally left me to put my own stuff in a bag that was on the counter. Ugh. Just an awful awful place, but if you've got the will of mind to get a good deal, shop on. read more

Love this place. Yeah, it's somewhat cluttered, but that adds to the fun. I check back now and then hoping for some good finds in new inventory batches. Some of my most memorable finds here: a gorgeous two-toned orange Johnstons cashmere scarf here for 32 bucks, a very nice cream Hobo International clutch wallet (these things go for like $100 retail...!!) for 20 bucks, Levi's Tilted 405 straight leg jeans (which turned out to be the most flattering and comfortable jeans I own, more than my Earnest Sewn or Joe's) for 14 bucks, and Juice Organics antioxidant serum for $5.99 (20 bucks at Whole Foods!) Not giving this place five stars because sometimes they have irregular clothes (like uneven sleeves or crooked pants seams) which might not even be that big of a problem if they labeled it all properly. I got some pants here with an odd hem job and there was nothing on the tag indicating it was an irregular. THis TJ Maxx usually has the best selection around - there's one closer to my house but I never seem to find any shoes in my size. I've found two pairs of ROOs here for $20 apiece when the cheapest that I've been able to find them were online for $35 (not including shipping and tax) - you may have to search around but it's usually worth it. read more
