My best friend and I had an incredible time in the women's shoe section at this Macy's. I was visiting her for the long weekend and we needed to do some wedding shopping. I needed to find my bridal shoes and she needed to start looking at bridesmaids dresses. First of all, this is one of the prettiest Macy's I've ever been inside. I'm not sure if this is a normal big city thing, but feels like the entire store was just Macy's and not a mall which was cool. There seemed to be a lot of special deals on different items. Most of it was what you'd expect from a Macy's in terms of pricing. We had so much fun in the shoe section. They had a gorgeous selection of shoes to pick from. I ended up falling in love with some bridal shoes from Dolce Vita. I was so happy to be able to order them for pick up at my store back home so I didn't need to fly with them. We also tried on some other gorgeous shoes like ballet heels. In terms of formal dresses, it felt like they still mainly had their winter selection out, so we weren't able to find the exact green bridesmaid dress we were looking for, but we did get a good idea of what looked good vs what didn't. The original home and location of Marshall Field's. I have been coming here since I was a little girl. The inside is beautifully decorated and the amazing smell of holiday season. I came to kick off the holiday season with a little shopping and to see the window displays. I love how this year's holiday theme is dedicated to Marshall Field's. Ok the reason for the 2 star review. The customer service is horrible. The workers are rude and lack etiquette services to their customers I went over to the Dior counter and there was no one there. I was browsing around looking at the various colors of lipsticks. Finally pops up 2 young ladies who I thought came to assist me. No hello or friendly smiles. I ask to try on some lipstick. The frowns and attitude of these young ladies. I was pissed but refuse to allow that behavior disturb my peace. After trying on lipstick, I picked the color to purchase. We get to the counter and was told to swipe my card. Excuse Me. She didn't even ring up my items.. I asked her to scan my items and let me see the prices on the screen. She had the nerve to tell me that I first had to swipe my card. Non sense. I had just purchased some perfume from a different counter and didnt have to scan my card first. After she rung me up and I paid. I decide to return the items and walked away. I called Macy's customer service line and explained the unprofessional rudeness of their workers. read more

Couldn't buy anything! Wandered around 3 floors looking for an open register or an employee. It was like a home alone experience but I actually got nervous I'd be trapped on the floor. I shopped for 90 minutes and only saw 1 employee working. Many elevators and escalators closed. I had to yell down the center to ask how to get out and who could help me. 25 minutes looking for a cashier until I came across 1 employee on the first floor who said sorry I can't help you. Left the clothes in the purse area. Bizarre experience. It's a giant showroom but they don't want to sell anything I guess. read more

Beautiful old Macys that was once Marshal Field. I didn't realize this landmark is from 1892. The clocks on the corner are pretty impressive although Macys looks a little sad from the outside. I understand that the turn of the century watches were very expensive. Some buildings had these big beautiful clocks. read more

I needed to purchase some boots during the snow storm and decided to go to Macys. It was crazy crowded on thanksgiving weekend but I was able to quickly get in and out. My friend wanted to stop by this Macy's in downtown, huge building. Has 14 floors of shopping and business office. There's also a food court that's open during the day. Starbucks coffee shop on the lower level, wine shop, and book store. Beautiful decorations throughout the store. Every floor decorated for the season. Designer clothes, shoes, and purses galore. Also household furniture and items. Prices varies from high-end to the lower price. We were there in the evening, so many of the shops were closed downstairs. Only retail selections available. Lots of people shopping and taking pictures of the store. We had to get to another place before it closes, will have to plan another time to come back and shop. read more

Took my daughter to try on special occasion dresses. There was an employee rushing around us putting dresses away, she was annoyed by our presence. The dresses which were all very neatly organized and presented nicely but upon try on they were really worn. All the ribbons and fasteners etc were frayed, tattered or just flat out detached. We found a dress my daughter liked but didn't purchase because of the well worn condition of the dresses. All the other employees we encountered aside from the restock woman in the dress department were warm and friendly. The store was busy but clean. read more

Wow! This Macy's is YUGE! It is beautiful and sophisticated with very professional and nice employees. I literally got lost several times but luckily there is a store map on each floor in the same place. Easy to find the map then find your way around. Clean and spacious store with an incredibly gorgeous ceiling. Found two swimsuits in the Last Call section for a total of $32.00. I will admit, the rest of the store was out of my price range. Ashley absolutely blew me away with her customer service at Macy's Downtown Chicago. When I walked in, I was all over the place. I kept picking up clothes I knew I'd never actually wear, stuck in my usual pattern of black pants and white shirts. As a plus-size woman, shopping for clothes I actually like has always been a challenge. I was even on the phone with my daughter, trying to get help breaking out of my style rut. That's when Ashley walked by and kindly asked if I was okay. I wasn't, but she changed that real quick. She took me over to the Last Act section and said, "Let's see if we can find something different." And she did She picked out some shirts and a blazer I never would've thought to try on, and once I did, I was surprised by how much I actually liked them. The colors were beautiful and outside my usual comfort zone in the best way. Ashley was so patient that she truly became my personal shopper. She gave me honest opinions, not just a sales pitch, and made me feel like a friend, not just a customer. I've never had a sales associate take that kind of time and care with me. Thanks to her, I had a genuinely great time shopping for something I rarely say. Thank you, Ashley. Macy's is lucky to have you. Everything was reasonable. The store is gorgeous. However, we had a group of 9, and after eating at the walnut room, some of our group wanted to shop. It was impossible to find a register that was either open or had less than a very long line. I know this sounds insane, but there was a seriously old and crazy customer at the counter and they really needed to take her aside to assist. Instead, even after a lot of us in line went to ask where else we could ALL (bc there was about 10 in line by then) get rung up, as it was abundantly clear the senior lady holding up the line would really never be done, we were told to look around the floor for other registers- no joke, there were none manned by anyone. We had to go to a different floor and on that floor, we also had to search for a way to get rung up. They just need to have clearer instructions on where to go to get assisted. It was a maddening experience. I give two stars bc of the icon status and gorgeousness of the building. Also, lost a star for the lack of pizazz the window displays have as of late. We did enjoy meeting Santa at that meet dnd greet. I'm basically giving one star for the building and one for Santa and those employees in that area were really nice younger people. Never have I been so enamored with a department store! The Macy's on State St is a staple and with good reason. It's MASSIVE, so if you're there purely for some shopping, you're sure to find something for anyone on your list. Six stories of selections, beautifully arranged, and with some gorgeous pieces for all. If you're there to soak in the history, there's plenty to see as well. As the original Marshall Fields flagship store, Macy's does a wonderful job of keeping the old timey feel of a once bustling department store of the early 1900s and combining it with the modern shopping trends. The magic of Marshall Fields is kept alive through the large selection of Franco Mints and the Franco viewing kitchen on the 7th floor, the vaulted atrium ceiling, the Christmas tree viewing at The Walnut Room, and the iconic 45 foot Christmas tree. There's something to be said about an old school department store, particularly a flagship one like this Macy's. I don't spend a lot of time downtown but I periodically enjoy browsing the store, especially when it's decorated for the holidays. It's so grand and feels some sort of magical. I recently stopped in to do a spot of holiday shopping and was pleasantly surprised. The salespeople were present but not pushy, and were very knowledgeable about their products. I stopped by the Kiehl's area of the beauty section and the sales associate (I want to say Keith? I misplaced my receipt with his name on it) sold me on a kit of men's products. I was glad I gave more information about my partner's skin concerns as I would have bought the wrong one. I really like the food goods section, they are tempting and make wonderful gifts. I also really enjoy their "Backstage" section which is basically like Marshall's. I was able to pick up a few gifts for my niblings without breaking the bank. Like a Marshall's, that section was a bit chaotic but wasn't really disorganized. I wish the signage pointing to that section were a bit clearer as I had to wander the entirety of the bottom floor before finding it, but I guess that's extra steps, right? read more

Gorgeous building. Beautiful holiday decorations. Amazing. Wish I could say the same about the rest of my experience. Employees were extremely rude and had a lot of attitude. I've never been rude to a customer service worker a day in my life because I worked retail for three years. I know how it is, especially around the holidays. But this was just... horrible. An employee on the 6th floor rudely redirected me to lower floors even though I was just looking around. Asked for directions to checkout counter, didn't say a word and just pointed across the room. I've never been here before! How am I supposed to know? When I went to checkout, the employee got visibly upset when I wouldn't sign up for a Macy's card. Almost just left without buying anything because I was so flustered and frustrated. Ended up buying only a couple of things. I probably would have looked around more and enjoyed myself if anyone would have greeted me or even made eye contact. But it was nice to look around at least. read more

I was in search of a DKNY floral design center sleeveless dress size 10. The Last Act area in the store at Oak Brook and on State Street Macy's in Chicago did not have my size. Kathleen was courteous, friendly and professional. I'd like to highly praise her for her excellent customer service. In addition, I'm a customer that's late-deafened and she patiently communicated her detailed information to me in writing. Macy's has been revitalized. For some time, it was the place I hurried through when the weather was frigid but I stopped in today, and it amazing. Sparkly, bright, bustling with activity, and just the store I remembered from the glory days. I actually stopped at a make-up counter and had the very best experience with Kevin at Bobbi Brown. I am make-up phobic, and Kevin did not pressure me to buy more than I planned on buying. He showed me how to apply the make-up, and I felt cared for and educated. Macy's is nothing like what it used to be, you used to have so many people at the register was ready to help you now they replaced them with a bunch of floor, walkers, looking and staring at you as if you're getting ready to steal to me I think they just be praying on people to steal so they can meet their quota, I see why half of Macy's stores around the country is closing because they don't have anything there and they have lost touch with the customers they brought them to the forefront. I popped in to cool off a little bit found a very pleasant surprise on the lower level of Macy's. They have a wine bar. I was pressed for time so really wasn't able to enjoy the entire wine collection, but trust me when I say I will be back and I will be spending a significant amount of time in here to enjoy and indulge on the wine options. The downtown store is quite a sensory overload to me. One of the largest cosmetics areas I've seen with lots of displays. Somehow I missed where the Barbie movie promo displays were ! I did see in the shoe dept. all the Barbie shoe displays though. I can't remember how many floors this store was, but it took over an hour to look through this Macy's. So many great deals with the sales for the pre Black Friday extravaganza! I had no clue about this until I walked into the store. Lots of things are 60 and 70% off but the majority are 25% off. Now everything's overpriced so everything is already marked up about 30%, so with the 60 and 70% off it was a steal! Ended up buying a few Christmas ornaments, would have been about $200 but got it for $60! Cha-ching $ ! Really enjoyed walking around a childhood memory of Toys R Us. Now it's not the same as the brick and mortar locations from many years ago. But it was nice to see the logo and the giraffe ! This is not only the biggest Macys I've ever seen but probably the biggest store I've ever been in. There are 7 floors and a lower level. It used to be Marshall Field's and they tried to keep a lot of that charm in the staircases, elevators, and there's even the original water fountains. We looked at women's clothes first on the 4th floor and it was pretty much what you'd expect from a department store. Then we went down to the lower level because I love Macy's Backstage and what?? There was a wine bar, a bookstore, a candy store, and a Starbucks. Every corner was a surprise. My home Macy's does not have anything like that so I guess they better get on it. My mother used to take me to Macy's during the holiday season when it was under the Marshall Field's name. We would do a little shopping, have lunch and take in the elaborate Christmas displays. Visiting Macy's around wintertime was always a magical thing for me growing up. The entire store is decked out and Christmas music went on nonstop. Two things I missed when it was under the Marshall Field name was: #1) The old Sanrio store #2) The Frango chocolates section. The department store has something for every age and gender. There's multiple levels which can be accessed by escalator and elevator. There is a second set of escalators with 360-degree views so if you're afraid of heights, elevators are available. I also like how the main entrances have street names up top to help orient you when exiting the store. Regardless of all the change over the decades, architectural wonders within Macy's remain. Two come to mind. The beautiful Tiffany Favrile glass ceiling and the Walnut room. Dining in the Walnut Room is a must while visiting Chicago. However, if I had to choose a time to visit the Walnut Room, the best time to go is in December. The dining room has a themed menu for the holidays with classic favorites like Mrs. Hering's 1890 chicken pot pie and the Frango mint pie. If you're lucky to score a seat in the main room, you'll dine around the gigantic lighted tree center stage. The Walnut room begins to take reservations early October. If you plan to secure a reservation, you'll want to book this far out on Open Table. read more

Block off half a day of your travels to the city if you plan to come here. This Macy's is HUGE! My goodness, when I thought it ended, there was something on the other side of the wall. I had a blast in here, I didn't get to experience every dept, but I walked through all of them. Just walking through them gave me jealousy because there was so many things I wanted to purchase but time didn't allow me the pleasure. This Macy's is multi-level, the elevator was down during my visit, so I got a workout as I shopped. Staff were kind. The biggest portion of my time was spent going through the many options available to me at the moment. I found everything I wanted and then some. I hope this Macy's doesn't go anywhere. First time in years that I have shopped at the Macys on State Street in Chicago and it will be my last. I purchased a rug in store and it is going to be shipped to me. They have the most antiquated system I've ever encountered. If you make an in store purchase you can't track the progress of your order online, even with the order number. You also can't get updated via the 800 number or online chats. You have to call the store directly and request updates until an actual shipping tracking number is available. Any and every store I've ever shopped at allows you to track from day of purchase through shipping. Very inconvenient and again so outdated. read more

This Macy's is giant, so if you have time to search, it is likely you can find what you are looking for, as they carry everything from clothing to home goods. The building itself is historic and beautiful, so it's worth stopping in just to take a closer view. On the bottom floor of the building, in the Pedway, there's a beautiful display of historic stained glass windows that is worth a look! However, because it is a historic building, the layout is sprawling and it is difficult to figure out where to find what you are looking for. There are often decent sales happening, but the racks of clothing get so chaotic that I find it stressful. I found the perfect dress for an event, but needed another size. It is really hard to find employees, so I ended up having to wait in the check out line for almost 30 minutes since only a handful of registers are open. When I finally got to the front, I was told they couldn't order another size online, but that there was "maybe" one dress in the size I needed somewhere in the store. I asked if someone could help me locate it, but the best she could do was tell me 3 different general areas it could possibly be. After searching those areas for a little over an hour, I gave up. If you have time to kill and want to browse, Macy's is a great option, but if you need something specific or want a little more assistance from an employee, I would recommend skipping Macy's and heading to one of Chicago's smaller boutiques where they have more organized inventory and can provide better assistance. read more

The Macys in Chicago is THE largest department store in the US...well according to the information we received from the tour guide. I can not recall the amount of levels the store had but it was a lot and AMAZING! I mean the decor was the best I've seen in a very long time! In addition to the decor and items to shop for, you could also have the opportunity to grab a light bite to eat! I guess they weren't lying when they said "It's levels to this" ha! What an embarrassment this store has become under the Macy's label. I cannot believe this used to be the renowned flagship Marshall Fields store. At the height of Holiday shopping season and we couldn't find any sales help or an open cashier station on the first floor except at the returns/refunds area that looked more like a grocery store self checkout. The clothes in the women's section were jumbled up all over each other. Buy the worst experience by far was the 7th floor women's bathroom that was so dirty and littered up it looked more like a bus station. Absolutely disgusting. All the flashy ornaments and lights in the world on the giant Xmas tree in The Walnut Room can't make up for the non-existent service help, the dirty bathroom & rumpled overfilled racks of clothing crammed into the aisles. At least the Frango mints were everywhere. Just no cashiers to take our money. read more

This is a beautiful classic looking Macys in the heart of downtown Chicago. Lots of floors with everything and anything that you could be looking for. One downside is that there is no dedicated parking structure/lot for customers. If you want to drive to this location, you will need to pay a steep price to park. The subsidized parking in the nearby structure is very expensive (only $2-$3 off from the regular downtown Chicago rate). Alternatively you could try to find street parking, however those spots are few and hard to come by in this area during prime hours. read more
