Mongolian Beef and Moo Shu Pork are super yummy too. If you like spice, ask for it. We always get our Chinese here but today the lady was acting very grouchy. She's either the owner or manager. Always at the register. Came in with our baby and said we needed a high chair. She glared at us and said, "a high chair?!?!" Yes. A high chair. She's 14 months. She eats too. Anyways, food was fine. Male server was nice. There was an extremely nice older lady that kept coming up to our baby and being so friendly and that was so nice. Then she started to fall asleep so I hurriedly got her back into her car seat and passed by the mean lady at the register again while the other person in the party paid and the mean lady glared again. I say, friendly, "she was falling asleep. Gotta get her out to the car." She said nothing, not even a nod. Just a terrible glare. Best Chinese in town and one of our favorite places to go for a fast, inexpensive lunch. It's always busy over the lunch hour and why not when you get an egg roll, wonton and soup with every lunch entree you order. We frequent it for take out and dinner too. LOVE the egg rolls! We love these entrees best: vegetable shrimp, chicken with snow peas, shrimp fried rice, triple delight, sesame chicken, beef and broccoli. We aren't very adventurous eaters, so we haven't tried even close to all of the choices. This is a family owned business and the entire staff works very hard to bring you hot, fresh, delicious food. The Red Latern is arguably one of the best Chinese food places in Cedar Rapids. The food was very delicious (especially the Sesame chicken), the staff was accommodating and friendly and the decor was great. They are reasonably priced, and meals come with an entree, fried rice or steamed rice, egg roll, crab rangoon and your choice of soup (egg drop was awesome). now If I could give a negative 1000 I would. I just drove 7 and a 1/2 miles to try their food because I was told it was very good I had a take out order. All of my food was placed in a brown paper bag and by time I got home the container, which I'm assuming was so full of juice it leaked all over the bottom of the bag and the whole entire bag busted before I could even get out of my car. Keep in mind... they put the rice ON TOP of the already full , paper container. Not only did they inform me when I called they were NOT going to replace $17 worth of food, I am going to have to pay for my car to be cleaned which now smells like garlic chicken and will stay smelling like garlic chicken because they sure won't pay for it to be cleaned. Best Americanized take out in town! Maybe the best battered Chinese food I've ever had. The lunch special is Iess than 6 dollars and fills you up all day. Any dish with battered and fried chicken is superb here! Best texture, white meat, and sauce combo I've had. Egg rolls are perfect and use spring roll paper instead of thick dough. The soups are always perfectly flavored and come with the lunch special! Not too bad for sit down service either. The only gripe I have is the lady at the front register comes off as being extremely rude and not welcoming. Try the hot braised chicken lunch special with fried rice and hot and sour soup. I have eaten at Ting's many times and have been satisfied with their food. But today I got takeout, and it was just awful. Generally I get chicken mein. Chow mein would seem to be easy, but it is actually very hard to make. The vegetables need to be lightly cooked so that they are still crisp, they need to be recognizable, and they need to be in a light white sauce of delicate flavor. And most of all there need to be crispy noodles. Today I got food that was much overcooked. The vegetables were basically shredded and very overcooked. The chicken was strangely rubbery and oddly diced. The white sauce was not delicate and it was not white it was brownish. The dish visually reminded me of dog food. And worst of all the crispy noodles were put in with the chow mein and were no longer crispy. I can no longer say that Ting's is the best Chinese place in Cedar Rapids. Ting's is a good example of a high quality neighborhood Chinese restaurant that you would find in large cities. It is amazing that you can find a place like this in Cedar Rapids. The food is consistently well made and tasty. Service is fast. The menu is limited for a Chinese restaurant of such high quality and you will not find unusual dishes that are common in big city Chinese establishments. No fresh fish or dim sum here. Ting's is small and usually vey crowded for lunch so I usually go after the lunch rush. Highly recommended. UPDATE 06/2015: Ting's Red Lantern has been inconsistent of late which makes it difficult to continue to recommend this restaurant. The food is still of higher quality than most local places but the preparation has been noticeably lacking. My last 3 visits have been marred by the overuse of salt in every dish making salt the predominate and only flavor. I'd rather have a bland but healthier dish than the overly salted fare now being served. The owners need to re-evaluate their cooking staff. If this continues, Red Lantern will lose a loyal customer. read more

Ting's is usually fantastic and a regular favorite, but on a recent take-out order, we arrived home to find out that our order had been messed up. We quickly called to let them know about the understandable mistake and asked if we could bring back the incorrect entree and get the correct entree. We were informed that the fault was not their's and that we would have to pay extra if we wanted to get the correct entree. I was shocked at her answer considering we are very regular customers and I ALWAYS order the exact same thing and I specifically heard the order placed correctly. I guess it will be PB&J tonight and I will have to branch out a bit in my choice of Chinese take-out from now on. A little customer service can go a long way.....and the lack of customer service and trying to place blame can send repeat customers quickly looking for other options. Have been here a few times and have had pretty much the same experience each time. The service is okay- we usually wait about 5 minutes before our waitress arrives which gives us time to look over the menu. The crab rangoons are a joke- it's 95% crispy wonton with maybe a teaspoon of cream cheese filling. I judge a place pretty harshly based on their crab rangoons (personal preference) so I wasn't thrilled from the beginning. I order the sesame chicken which is quite good. We have gotten the orange chicken once, but it's not very good- overly orangey and the breading on the chicken tastes gummy, just kind of weird. One of the times I was there the hostess was clipping her fingernails at the register/host stand. Clipping. Her. Nails. In. A. Restaurant. Gross. The restaurant itself could use a good scrubbing- the menus included. Maybe instead of clipping her nails she could wipe the menus off? We had dinner here when we first came in to Iowa. The owner is very rude and not customer friendly. They served the food but it took for us to wait so long. She even argued with us what kind of noodle they are using for pan fried coz we are not use to the wonton noodle as what they are using as supposed to the one we know in California. Szechuan orange chicken craving strikes again! This time, the Boyfriend and I ordered the "dinner for two" which includes a family style soup, an egg roll and a crabmeat rangoon per person. We ordered the egg drop soup and it was SO good!! NOTHING like those nastyass buffet egg drop soups. This was so light and delicious, as were the appetizers. I hate those egg rolls that are filled with mystery meat and rotten cabbage. These were crispy/crunchy wrappers with lots of fresh cabbage and the crabmeat rangoons had great flavor. They again, were not those icky chinese buffet appetizers. Our server was really friendly and attentive also. We loved our meal and will definitely return! Still totally recommend to others. I've been going here for 10+ years now. I can tell you certifiably that it's a clean, well run family restaurant. They treat you like family there, especially if you are repeat long time customers. My wife and I used to live close by, so we'd order take out from there frequently. Now that we've moved elsewhere in town it's more of a treat.
