Setting the appointment was difficult because the phone number is not monitored and you have to wait on hold for a long time and no way to leave a message. Once I got a hold of someone, the appointment was set weeks in advance and team arrived on time and on day scheduled. However as my email to the ownership/mgmt outlines below (I received no response via email or phone from this note by the way), the pricing compared to what my research suggests for a similar job is x2-3 times that of another service provided. I would not recommend Tingley as I experienced distrust and dishonesty in their pricing practices. Shame on Tingley for taking advantage of the situation and then not even bothering to respond to my reach out to understand the pricing. Doug and his assistant were very professional and friendly, completing the job in under 1 hour of time. When I did my research on pricing/costs related to installing a foyer chandelier, what I saw was $250 - $350 so I was quite surprised to see a bill for almost $1,000 upon my return last night. I've tried calling the phone number and seem to always go to a waiting queue as I can never seem to speak with someone directly. You've asked me to provide a review of our service, however I'm uncomfortable doing so as my impressions are that you took advantage of the situation and overcharged us for the service by at least double and possibly more. We have other electrical home updates we are considering however based upon this experience, I will not be considering your services and I will not recommend your services to friends and family based upon yesterday. They showed up to do an estimate and unexpectedly charged me $89 just for that when every other estimate that I got was free. Their $6,000-plus estimate was crazy high, four times what others were quoting. I think they knew I wouldn't accept it. I think they just wanted to bill me $89 for five minutes of easy work. When finally I had the job done by someone else, the bill was $850. Tingley claims that they recorded me agreeing to pay for the estimate when I called them. I doubt that I did, but beware: Watch what you say on the phone to them. Better still, don't call them at all. read more

HARD PASS. Wonderful service people and no reflection on them, but this company has become totally MISLEADING and DISHONEST WITH PRICING. I was told ahead of time there would be a $99 service fee for the call. Accepted and set the appointment. Once the tech arrived, was told it was an additional $125 to "diagnose the problem." That's $200 + before any work was done! When I called the office about the additional, surprise, "diagnostic fee", the woman I spoke with said the $99 service fee was only to get the tech to our home and nothing else. We've been customers before and relayed that this has never happened. I was told, "A lot has changed in the company since you last used us." No kidding. Common sense has gone out the window. STAY AWAY from this company. They will absolutely rip you off! I hired them to fix a live wire in my basement and the experience was awful. The way that they quote the job is terrible and you're basically STUCK letting them do the work since they charge a ridiculous amount of money just to show up. After that they spent 20 minutes "discovering the issue," which I already knew and TOLD them as soon as I opened the door. By then, you're into them for so much money, you feel like there's nothing to do but pay the ridiculous amount to have them fix it. TERRIBLE COMPANY!! After the job is completed they send like five emails and texts asking "How did we do?" but no one follows up with any negative comments. Just a very, very poorly run company. I would literally use ANYONE else. Unfortunately this is the way that far too many small companies operate today. It's unfortunate, but it's what makes Yelp invaluable. I recently had Tingely install a 4 prong dryer plug and they also needed to install a GFCI breaker. I was given a very high estimate of nearly $700 including the $100 initial fee. I questioned this but was told the parts were will over $200. While had doubts about this I went ahead as I had paid the initial fee. The entire job was vey simple and quick and not $600 worth of work. With later checking I found the breaker as at most $120 at list price. I expected an itemized bill but got a flat rate invoice. When I called to complain that this job was way over priced, I was told twice that "our prices aren't for everyone"- pretty unbelievable! This matches a lot of other views I see now - they are clearly a rip off and I would avoid at all costs because of their outrageous pricing read more

TINGLEY PROMOTES THE POLICY OF MISINFORMATION - Technician will make promises to you to fix problems that he cannot keep and the company will not stand by what he promised during his visit. Our technician was very clear that "$250 covers fixing the heat pump problem here and now (this is in addition to $99 just for the visit!), you just need to cover the cost of the missing part is needed." Company went on this promise completely. $350 was for evaluation only, they claimed. Company also refused to provide details of the quote on the missing part - so even its "evaluation" was missing essential details, which they chose not to share with us. THAT IS DELIBERATE MISINFORMATION and OBFUSCATION, because upon pressure the company admitted that the quote contained more than the price of the part, which is not what we were told by the company technician. - TINGLEY LACKS TRANSPARENCY - PROMOTES THE POLICY OF COVER-UP - Upon receipt of quote on "just the the cost of the part" we needed to verify whether this was in fact true. Apparently, the company policy is not to provide any specifics or breakdowns on their quotes. Why? The company clearly had something to hide, mainly the fact that much more than the cost of the part was included. A quick call to Mitsubishi (which provided us with a range of costs for such parts) confirmed that cover-up was in fact taking place. The cost of relevant parts should be around 25-30% of the total Tingley's "quote", if that. Tingley admitted that the quote was indeed padded and included "much more than the part cost," but still refused to provide the breakdown and part numbers. Honesty and transparency with customers is not Tingley's policy. Financial pressure to pay upfront and sign blank computer screens on the spot, however, IS!!! - TINGLEY PRACTICES FINANCIAL PRESSURE AND OBFUSCATION - Several times during the visit technician had me sign a blank screen on his pad without spelling out exactly what exactly I had to sign for. Even though he, by his admission, did not finish the job and was going to be back the next day "to pop in the new part, after we paid for it" he made me pay for the visit which left us worse off than before. The company policy apparently is not to give customers any time to review its bills - he made me pay up before he left and never responded to calls and emails. Another Tingley policy is to shield technicians from customer inquiries or further questioning. What you have with Tingley is a case of predation and unfair business practices that should be seriously investigated. Under the veil of secrecy and non-disclosure, they will unscrupulously manipulate and apply pressure and try to extract as much as they and then claim that none of the earlier promises by their "talented and professional" representatives took place. read more

Tingley Electric are ripoff artists! They charged me $1700+ for 3 hours work and one hour driving to get parts they could have brought with them. NEVER call them. They charge $89 to show up to give you an estimate and you are stuck paying them for NOTHING unless you agree to their outrageously high prices. For instance, they charged me for digging a trench that was ALREADY dug before they got there. Most electricians charge $100 to $150/hour. We used Tingley for a service call to fix our nest thermostats which had an error message. I couldn't be home when the service was conducted but my dad was. When I got the bill the description of the services provided was extremely brief with no breakdown of costs, and the total seemed much more than I expected after the first estimate. My dad had approved the charges as we were in a bind- we had a little baby at home and it was one of the coldest days of the winter so far- and I was at work and couldn't pick up the phone. After I contacted Tingley to get clarification about what was actually done and why it was priced the way it, in short they said the price had been approved and the heat was on and left it at that. I asked why they charged so much for installing the e-thermostat ($442 total for e-thermostat and installation!!!) and just got a response that they just do. Later I got an email from their office that said they mark up new thermostats 60% (which wasn't what I was originally told), and in talking with others who've worked with electricians this seems outrageous. Both thermostats had the same error message but one was replaced/the other one was made to work, and without a clear explanation of what the problem was. In any case, the explanations for the services provided were poor. We feel that we were overcharged for services that we may not have needed and basically that we were taken advantage of since we were desperate to fix our heat quickly on such a cold day. We had Tingley come in and move some wires in our wall and move an electrical outlet. We were informed that they would not come out without charging an $89 fee, regardless of whether they did the work. The technicians were top notch and did a fantastic job, but the quote we received was a number without any back up. When we called the office afterwards, we asked for a receipt for the work and the office staff seemed put off that we would ask. We also asked about an hourly rate as we have additional work that we would like to have done and would like to be able to budget for it. My husband was told they don't provide that - they price the job. I can't help but think we overpaid since the office will not provide a receipt, and am disappointed as we felt they did great work. We will be looking elsewhere for a company with more transparency. read more

Wildly expensive. Learn from my mistake. Charged me $1300 for equivalent work that another electrician did for $350. The sum total of the work was rotating a single bathroom sconce (it was installed upside down), moving an existing outlet directly up a wall for a TV, moving another outlet 3 ft to the right and tightening an outlet cover (for which I paid $97 on that last item alone). That's it. Here's the thing - I agreed to let them do the work after I saw the quote. Never having dealt with electrical work (as a new homeowner) I was taken aback at the cost but swallowed that lump in my throat not realizing how outrageous the cost was. Shame on me for not doing my homework. Do yourself a favor and get another quote - even if you have the pay the $89 service fee for them to come out, saying no and getting another bid could easily save you hundreds or thousands of dollars. So my fire alarms, installed in 1986, had been going off randomly for a while. All I needed to do was hit the test button and it would shut off. I had planned on getting them replaced within the month. But Thursday night... they went off (2 am) and the button would not turn them off. I had to go downstairs and pull the breaker. This only worked because the old alarms didn't have battery back up. I realized I had to get someone out there asap. I called the next morning and they said they would get someone. They had someone there to replace the fire alarms by 10:30 AM. I had already purchased fire alarms for them but it was installed in about 10 minutes and they tested it for me. Prior to calling this company I had called a few others and lets just say they offered me no guarentees that they could fit me in. We were extremely pleased with the fantastic service and immediate same day response provided by Tingley Electric Service and for the excellent help, key advice and professionalism of Vinny. He was able to come to our house very early on a Sunday morning following a flooded basement and was able to safely restore power, isolate affected utilities, check the entire house as part of a safety check including every outlet and to troubleshoot and fix our back up generator. He followed up quickly with a very helpful preventative maintenance program for circuit breakers and is provided solutions for a back up sump pump monitoring system. We strongly recommend Vinny and Tingley Electric service and the helpful and knowledgeable service desk and would offer more than 5 stars if possible for this best in Boston service. read more

I needed someone whom I could trust in my home, and Tingley Electric came highly recommended. The staff Vinny hires is trustworthy and professional. They leave the house cleaner than when they arrived! I have had Tingley install recessed lighting in our entire first floor, master bedroom (where they also installed dimmers which I use daily and really make waking and going to sleep a peaceful experience). We also have had Tingley install a timer for our driveway lights for safety and a flood light on a timer (with a remote control!) in the backyard so we can see our dog in all of the former dark corners of the yard. Yes, all of the lighting is great. But more importantly I feel safe in my house knowing the lighting is where I need it. I cannot recommend working with Tingley Electric enough! read more

Tingley was referred to us last year by a friend who is a General Contractor. We needed to update our outdoor security lights. Called and made an appointment: they showed up ON TIME. Got a quote and a timeline. They stuck to budget and did the work on time. Plus, the electricians are extremely professional and nice. Had them back for a couple of smaller jobs more recently. Same excellent customer service: made the appointment via e-mail, and the guys showed up on time and within budget. This time they hit a snag: had to send a part out to be refurbished. Vinny called to explain the process and cost. They sent the part out promptly and re-installed the repair within half the estimated time. And (as of this writing) it works perfectly. My wife and I hired Tingley Electric for two separate projects in the past year or so and could not happier with the level of service and professionalism. My wife and I had purchased an outdoor hot tub and we hired Tingley Electric after being introduced to them by one of my colleagues. Jerry arrived at our home on time, was very professional, and cleaned up after himself. And he was done within a day (which involved drilling through a concrete wall to get to the main circuit breaker in the garage). The 2nd time was just recently for a service call on our kitchen range hood that was turning off and on randomly and not staying on when in use. Vinny (the owner) took time out of his Saturday morning to swing by our home a couple days after our call for service. He wore booties over his shoes so he wouldn't bring dirt inside (it had rained the night before). He was able to determine that it was not an electrical hookup issue but rather an issue with the hood's control panel. On his way out, without me asking him, Vinny helped me with an installation of a new outdoor lamp post that I was working on before he arrived, replacing a wire that was shorting out. What service! Really disappointed in the professionalism and tactics of this business. I waited a few months to post a review to see if my impression would improve, but it definitely has not. They gave a quote for performing services that seemed too high, but I relied upon them for giving a fair price for the type of work and proposed time it would take them. I should have recognized the red flag of their pricing tactics when I asked how much one-line item in the quote would be to perform on its own. "Oh, I actually forgot to include that one-line item, but we'll include it anyway". Like they were doing me a huge favor in charging me at least 2x if not 3x more than what it should have been. I ended up having them do one other line-item that needed to be done. Two guys arrived around noon and left around 2pm, which includes the time for a walk-through and trip to a local supply store. Job: 5 recessed light hats to allow for insulation plus $89 service fee for a total of $1,324.00 On a side note, we later discovered that an HVAC vent was lifted off the 2nd floor ceiling/attic floor (which may or may not have been done during this work) so unconditioned high heat & humid attic air was being vented through the HVAC system rather than the conditioned air in the room below. If nothing else, the company staff could have given me a heads up about this vent when they were doing the work up there. Conversely, I had another contractor give me a heads-up about an issue during their work because A) it is the nice thing to do and B) in advising a homeowner about it, they avoid looking like the person that did it. Instead, this company staff proclaimed it was like that before we were up there and didn't think it was their place to mention it. Also, it didn't help that the plastic bags for the light encasements Tingley installed were strewn upon the attic floor, which was discovered upon tripping over them (and almost falling down the attic stair opening) while trying to identify why the vent was detached from the ceiling. Thankfully, I have found electricians that provide diligent work, reasonable prices, and clean up after themselves. Certainly no thanks to Angie's List, which is a haven for over-priced, under-performing contractors. I am sure the company will reply with some 'blah, blah, blah' response, but don't fall for their rating or tactics like I did. Contractors and homeowners need to have a certain level of trust between them when work is being performed. Unfortunately, I do not have any level of trust in Tingley or Angie's list and will happily work with other sources and contractors. read more

The work that was done by their electricians was good, clean and safe, the electrician was also extremely nice and professional. However I was ridiculously over charged for the job I had asked for. Being a young single female I am not educated on these things (my own fault) and without researching, agreed to the charge and work. Lesson learned-do your research! I was told by an electrician friend out of state that I was charged over $1,000 more for what I wanted. He said I was "completely robbed and hosed, that company should be ashamed of what they charged you." I am just being honest and hopefully will prevent a young single female from making the same mistake I did, in assuming their quotes were fair. I don't ever post on here because I respect someone's business and livelihood, but I am sick to my stomach about the charge and how much I spent. This isn't exactly a "review"; JG never did any work for me. I found them on Yelp. The problem is: I spoke with a very nice person who said someone would call me. But they never did. BTW: Had the same experience with JG (now giving them the same Yelp review). I'm self-employed and work hard to get new business. So it's very annoying to have to chase after OTHERS to give THEM my business. If a company isn't responsive/ communicative right from the start, can you really depend on them long-term? FYI: I wasn't expecting them to "drop everything" and come right over. My need was a very small and not urgent project; maybe that's why they didn't call back. A smart business person would recognize that it may be a small project today, but the most important thing is to establish a relationship.
