Bread starter and whiskey flight
David C.

Sunday brought us back to Hermann for an anniversary lunch, and Tin Mill was one of our top choices to check out. Located in a repurposed grain elevator at the entrance to historic downtown, right across from the Amtrak station and near the banks of the Missouri River, this restaurant makes great use of its picturesque space. Needless to say, we had high hopes. Everything at Tin Mill is crafted towards a wonderful experience: prompt, friendly service, low lighting and low ceilings to create an intimate dining setting, a wide range of local (as in, right-across-the-street local) whiskey, wine, and beer selections, and delicious food choices. My only complaint is really self-directed: I wish I had paid more attention to the separate lunch and dinner menus. In practice, I guess that means we'll need to drive back to try the prime rib next time. My wife and I started with drinks and appetizers while narrowing down the best main plate for a chilly fall afternoon. I opted for the whiskey flight, which include four local bourbon and rye samples. I tend to prefer rye, but my personal favorite was probably the Black Shire Bourbon (disclaimer: they were all great and you really can't go wrong as a casual whiskey fan, in my opinion). The bread starter was an excellent appetizer served with an ample helping of creamy butter. We try to make a rule not to fill up on bread at the start of a meal, and we luckily managed to exercise self-control once again. Torn between something we thought might be a bit lighter and healthier and something we knew we would be immediately satisfying, we finally went for the latter. I ordered the Deep Fried Chicken Sandwich and my wife tried the Brisket Grilled Cheese. The menu names and descriptions already let you know what to expect, but I did enjoy the chicken's crispy texture along with the flavor combo of curried aioli and apple slaw topping. Hermann has so many cool boutique stores, coffeehouses, and restaurants to try and we're excited to make our trip out an anniversary tradition. Tin Mill is worth checking out if you find yourself celebrating a special occasion or looking for a nice lunch on your way through town.

The vibes were off all around. We had issues with seating when we arrived. We had a group of 9 and there were plenty of open tables on the patio. However, we weren't allowed to sit at the only table big enough for our party because they are "only serving tables with umbrellas". We also weren't allowed to push two four-tops together, leaving one of our party sitting awkwardly in between without table space. Once we were seated, our server didn't seem interested in serving us. It took forever just to get drinks and apps, so we went elsewhere for dinner. Blueberry thyme mocktail- B+, mostly just tasted like tea with fresh thyme. Pretty though. Crab cakes appetizer- A, pretty good.

Had lunch on their outdoor patio on a Saturday. It was lovely without being too crowded. Server/bartender was super welcoming and gave great recommendations. Portions were large and prices were reasonable. Loved the crab cakes! Such great outdoor atmosphere! The inside looks really cute. Bathrooms were super clean. Highly recommend stopping here for a fantastic meal in Hermann

We had a fabulous time at Tin Mill. Joel was the best! He thought of everything and even helped with a golden hour picture out front. The food was incredible - not a single complaint from any of our 7 ladies. Would recommend to anyone visiting Hermann! Also the AC was heavenly in the summer heat. 10 out of 10!

Veal schnitzel-couldn't even cut it-it was very tough. The German potato salad and cabbage were flavorless.

Very high prices. Schnitzel was so tough I couldn't cut it. German potato salad and cabbage were flavorless. I sent it back. My sister had the smashed burger and for hours after she kept saying she tasted a weird beef taste in her mouth. The fries, however, were the best Ive ever had!

We came here to Tin Mill after taking a two hour electric bike ride on the Katie trail. We got there around 4 and we had the entire place to ourselves for a little while. Thor; our server was kind and courteous. The establishment looks like a rustic German cavern but classier. We ordered the pretzel, The salmon with broccolini and lemon mashed potatoes and the Whiskey BBQ chicken with sweet mashed potatoes and crispy Brussels sprouts. The pretzel was crispy and had an amazing crunch on the outside and soft like a pillow in the inside. Not too much salt and the temp of it was perfect. The salmon was good although I have had better, it was paired nicely with creamy lemon mashed potatoes that were on point and the broccoli was a little ?greasy? but was perfect on texture. The BBQ chicken has a kick and is cooked perfectly. The sweet mash was bland but was perfect for the chicken and Brussels were way too greasy to eat, bummer because they tasted amazing with the cranberry served with it.

Excellent Dining Option in Hermann MO, we ordered German Sausage, Calamari, Strip Steak, and couple of Cheeseburgers. The Cheeseburgers were fantastic as they were well seasoned and topped with a delicious Bacon Onion Jam. We also recommend the Strip Steak as it was very flavorful and included mashed sweet potatoes and seasoned Vegetables. They were accommodating for food allergies and special requests. Plenty of options for vegetarian and vegan dishes. Very nice atmosphere for a night out. Facilities were very clean and service was good. Highly recommend. Thank you

Open bucket of pickles that stayed open the whole time we were there.

Worst food & service ever! We wanted the sausage appetizer & we were told they were out of sausage (which we didn't understand why they didn't go across the street & get sausages from Hermann Wurst Haus) so we ordered the meatball appetizer...the meatballs were so over done that we could barely cut through them with a fork. We were sitting at the bar & there was only one bartender for the whole restaurant & she was struggling to keep up...there were dirty glasses everywhere & an open bucket of pickles right near us which didn't seem very sanitary. Then someone returned their food & the staff was all looking at it & commenting oh wow we need to make another one. It was definitely a cluster of chaos!

Welcoming staff and very well done dishes. We stopped in for some after food and drink. Our favorite dish was the crab cakes. The real gems were the desserts made in house. Both bread pudding and creme brule' were top notch.

Stopped by TM while in town for Oktoberfest... First time eating there, and it was really good. Cool inside, kinda of any old country rustic vibe. The service was excellent and the food came out really quick. We got the prime rib and schnitzel, which were both solid. A bit pricey, but it's one of the few bigger restaurants in Hermann.

In the 90's it would have been cool, but its over priced for food that is not fresh. Its frozen, bought and then heated up. Wont go back.

The restaurant was nearly empty on a weekday night. There were multiple open 6- and 8-top tables available, and we chose a 6-top because the only open 4-top was directly next to the front door. Shortly after we sat down, another table left, making the place even emptier. A staff member came over and insisted we move because we only had four people, despite the fact that there was no crowd, no wait, and no practical reason the table would be needed. We explained that we were regulars, that the restaurant was empty, and even shared that the reason our usual fifth person wasn't with us was because my grandpa had just passed away. Instead of showing any flexibility or understanding, he continued insisting we move. The situation escalated, and our family ended up leaving without eating. I understand restaurants have policies, and I normally respect that. But there's also such a thing as judgment, hospitality, and basic human compassion. This felt less like customer service and more like someone enforcing rules for the sake of enforcing them. It was honestly disappointing from a place we've supported for years.

We had a party of 12 and we were told we'd be sat at different tables, no big deal. 8 of our party went to one table and the other 4 sat at a table catty corner to our party. We had separate waiters which I think was maybe their first mistake. Both tables ordered drinks and appetizers that came fast and were delicious....then things quickly fell apart. We were one of the first few tables seated. Our other parties tables food came out and us 4 at the other table was still waiting. We continued to wait while every table that came in after us starts getting their meals. Finally the table behind us that came in 30 min after us got their meals, we asked the waitress if she could check on our food? She came back and said it was "being plated." We wait a solid 30 more min and by this time our other parties table had eaten and were paying and we still did not have our food. Asked the waitress again who said they were waiting on mashed potatoes. We got up to check with the manager who was bartending who never once apologized or stopped to check on what was going on and only said "we got swamped." Which was a crazy excuse considering we were one of the first tables to order. Since the manager refused to help at all we talked to the hostess who was seating people and may have been the asst manager. She checked on our food and told us "there was a problem with the pesto." When our food came out my daughter mushroom and Swiss burger was charred to a crisp and hard. Finally the assistant manager took our meals off of our tickets. It was a frustrating experience for our first visit there and didn't leave a great impression. The food (minus my daughter's burger) and drinks were really good. I'm not sure where the disconnect happened but the managers poor excuse and the way he completely ignored us and the situation was pretty poor customer service. We come to Hermann every year and this year had brought people who had never been before. Sad they didn't get an enjoyable experience and my daughter didn't even get a meal.

I enjoyed a mulled wine, salmon and potato cakes. The food was prepared well and was delicious. The caveat (there's always a caveat) is, be prepared to spend a lot of money on a meal that I've personally cooked for about a 5th of the price. However, as I was eating out because I didn't feel like cooking tonight, it was very close to being worth the expense. I also want to thank my waitress as she was very good.

The only negative I have is that I didn't have time to eat more of the food. And order more drinks. So, this one will be on the list for a return visit. But, I can hear you saying... "Rob, you only scored it 4 out of 5!" Well, that is because I can't do a half-star. So let me explain! The Food - Amazing Schnitzel with all the right sides. Katie got the salmon, again seasoned and cooked to perfection. They get all stars for the food! The Ambiance - This place, at one time, was a working mill and has all of that rustic charm. There are private rooms that are decked out in the downstairs of the place, and plenty of amazing thick-beamed rooms by the bar and main seating area. Lots of fun things outside when it isn't too cold. Again, all the stars! The Service - The person who seated us gave us a quick rundown on the local liquors and their general food. Then, just for grins, let us go take pictures downstairs and at parts of the bar. See attached. She also offered to go further, but we declined and headed to our table. Our waitress... well... she was efficient and friendly. She took our order correctly and delivered the food and check appropriately. And here is where the half-star gets lost. I asked, "Which do you think is better tonight? The Lobster Spätzle or the Schnitzel?" Katie said I looked at her like she had just melted onto the floor when she replied with. "I prefer the Schnitzel! But, I haven't ever had any spätzle." Wait?!?!?! You are working in a Germanesq restaurant, in a Historic German town, and are over the age of 45. Obviously have worked here for a while. And you don't know what one of the 6 dinner dishes, not a salad or a burger, tastes like?!?!?! I mean... I can understand if it was vegan or something like that... but she just told me that she likes the PORK Schnitzel! Owner/Manager... please make sure your peeps can answer the simple flavor questions. Another place was even able to tell me which wine they thought would go with my food... off the top of her head, and they had more on the menu. That said! All of you who get the chance to eat here should take it! I know when I make it back to Hermann, I will, and I'm sure they will get that last star!

This place, though it isn't indicated anywhere, stopped seating after lunchtime and took a break between 2 pm and 4 pm. They weren't kicking diners out, but also wouldn't seat anyone till 4. This is a bit of a shock for those just trying to get a late lunch and missed the 2 pm deadline by a few minutes. There is no other close option for snacks or something of the like. And unfortunately, the attitude was very much of a... "well, sorry that you weren't prepared!" We almost didn't return, but we wanted a specific item off the menu. And to rate this place! (Just dropped my rating to 3 stars from 4 as I think of this. When we did return in time for dinner, the same person who didn't recognize us at all cheerfully greeted and seated us. The waitress was very good and knew her stuff. Even so far as to suggest a specific wine with my dinner when asked. The food - This is the main thing that lost a star. It was OK. I chose the German Trio, thinking of getting a little of everything. And, I did. However, when it says smaller portions (see menu picture), they mean it! There was a smallish brat, an incredibly small and overcooked piece of schnitzel (pictured), and lastly some overcooked pork with a sauce all over it. I believe they get away with serving this kind of food for several reasons. a.) The sauce is amazing! And yes, it is on lots of the food or on the side as you wish. b.) The winery has a trolley that runs to it. So many visitors are "trapped" till it returns, so a place to eat makes sense. Also, the place's main concern is wine. The average customer is at least lightly sauced and will view this as the best meal ever because they are going to remember the sauce! Those of you who typically read my reviews often times know that I give each venue the benefit of a doubt and will go eat at them a few times to ensure it wasn't just a fluke. But not this time. I found nothing extremely redeeming other than the convenience of eating right after drinking a bunch of wine. This place touts itself as one of the premier, old school, and fancy restaurants in Hermann. It is not. Pick one of the others and have a better meal.
