I've been to Hermann about 5 times now. We've always missed out on eating here and I was so excited we were going to finally get to try it out. We had a party of 12 and we were told we'd be sat at different tables, no big deal. 8 of our party went to one table and the other 4 sat at a table catty corner to our party. We had separate waiters which I think was maybe their first mistake. Both tables ordered drinks and appetizers that came fast and were delicious....then things quickly fell apart. We were one of the first few tables seated. Our other parties tables food came out and us 4 at the other table was still waiting. We continued to wait while every table that came in after us starts getting their meals. Finally the table behind us that came in 30 min after us got their meals, we asked the waitress if she could check on our food? She came back and said it was "being plated." We wait a solid 30 more min and by this time our other parties table had eaten and were paying and we still did not have our food. Asked the waitress again who said they were waiting on mashed potatoes. We got up to check with the manager who was bartending who never once apologized or stopped to check on what was going on and only said "we got swamped." Which was a crazy excuse considering we were one of the first tables to order. Since the manager refused to help at all we talked to the hostess who was seating people and may have been the asst manager. She checked on our food and told us "there was a problem with the pesto." When our food came out my daughter mushroom and Swiss burger was charred to a crisp and hard. Finally the assistant manager took our meals off of our tickets. It was a frustrating experience for our first visit there and didn't leave a great impression. The food (minus my daughter's burger) and drinks were really good. I'm not sure where the disconnect happened but the managers poor excuse and the way he completely ignored us and the situation was pretty poor customer service. We come to Hermann every year and this year had brought people who had never been before. Sad they didn't get an enjoyable experience and my daughter didn't even get a meal. read more

All the food we ordered were in a "bite size" fashion which was actually really nice. Fernweh is in an old remodeled building in the historic downtown of Hermann. The atmosphere is a modern vibe mixed with the old architecture. Very welcoming! When we first arrived, we paid to do a bourbon and whiskey tasting. The lady was incredibly informative about how they make all of them. My husband was really surprised with how good their two year bourbon was. We sat at the bar and shared a brisket grilled cheese and sweet potato fries. Both were good. I also enjoyed a couple tasty handcrafted cocktails. I would definitely recommend this place to others and would return myself. read more

We love the ambiance here. When you walk in there's a tasting area where you can try their drinks. But then there's also a restaurant to the right. We've done the tasting, which was really good and eaten here a few times. In the restaurant it's very cozy and there's a little fireplace on the wall. The decor is very cute. We had the brisket, which was delicious and the roasted cauliflower and broccoli which was very tasty. We also had the old fashioned drinks. Very yummy. Drinks were amazing, bar service was amazing. When we first got there we were told there is a wait. When we got to the dining room there was no-one there. I feel as if they wanted us to do the tasting that cost money before they would seat us. We were not the only people that this happened to, really ruined the experience for us. First off, the tastings at the counter were a positive experience and led to our group purchasing several bottles of whiskey. However, we were NOT happy with our meal in the restaurant. 3 of our group ordered the pork steak special, which finally arrived after 45 minutes. Tasting a bit like shoe leather smothered in a sour brown sauce and being nearly inedible, the manager was informed and came out and apologized and said she would discount the 3 meals. Came in there with a large party 8 and a baby. The staff said there was only outdoor seating and put us outside. While we walked through the main dining hall, there was an empty table that could seat 8 people with room for a baby chair. It was frustrating to see that table empty the entire time we were there. This was the place to be in Hermann during one of their popular wine walk weekends. To top it off, it's one of very few patios in the whole town, and when a summer cold front blows through, it's pretty good overall. After an understandable 30 minute wait, we snagged a spot on the patio and had a nice view of the river and some trains going by. For an appetizer, we tried the spinach artichoke dip with crispy pita which hit the spot. I ordered fish & chips for an entree and it was just OK -- way, way too much fried breading and not a lotta fish, but I was so hungry I enjoyed most of it nevertheless. One thing of note is that my friend is vegetarian and we really couldn't find many things on the menu here.. not just here, anywhere in Hermann. It's got such German heritage and the menus follow suit. He ended up piecing it together with sides and apps. Service was friendly all throughout, and the vibe and square meal after a day of cycling it was a nice little stop, but I'll continue exploring around other spots the next time I ride through. read more

We were excited to try this restaurant for lunch since it looked like a gourmet restaurant. The hostess was very nice, but the good experience stopped there. We looked at the menu for 5 to 10 minutes and then when we tried to order, we were told by the waitress, they were low on brisket, which was the main ingredient in most of their lunch entrees. She said the only way to get brisket was to order a grilled cheese brisket sandwich dish ($20). So, I ordered that and it had a small amount of brisket sprinkled in it. My side was a side salad which had about 3 bites to it. While waiting for my meal, I decided to order a glass of wine. When it finally arrived, it was a terrible gas station wine high in sulfites and not palatable. I was surprised by that since we were in 'wine country'. We've been disappointed with several of the 'nice' restaurants in Hermann. The only one that is consistent with good food is the Wurst House, so we won't try other restaurants anymore. read more

We had a small group here to celebrate a birthday on a Sunday and we're pleasantly surprised at the food, drinks, and atmosphere. I ordered the grilled chicken sliders and the garden salad with chicken. Both were very good- chicken grilled just right and slider buns grilled on one side and soft on the other. Our server took good care of us and I didn't ever find us having to ask for anything. There was a small crowd that day, but the weather wasn't that good either being rainy and wet. After leaving another local establishment and not quite done drinking it was nice to see that Fernweh was still open. As soon as we walked in I felt like we should have started here instead. Fernweh makes corn based spirits, vodka but most importantly, whiskeys! I'm a fan of Old Fashioneds so I was going to just get that but our bartender, Eli convinced me to try their twist, the Old Earl, which used an Earl Grey infused whiskey and house bitters. The cocktail was 9.50?! What? that's ridiculously cheap for a cocktail. Ok, so before I go all ga-ga I waited to give it a try. I didn't pick up the lavender notes but I could pick up the tea notes in the whiskey. A cocktail like this would easily be 12 dollars minimum so whatever minor issues are overshadowed by the price. I wanted to highlight Eli, despite the fact that we were the last ones in and it was clearly near closing time he didn't call last call either. He was cleaning up but said that we didn't need to rush or hurry on his account since he had to stick around to close out. Frozen vegetables, combative staff and confused menu. Ordered the pretzels and the whipped feta apps and those were good. Then ordered the Cobb salad and chicken sliders, glazed carrots and the pictured cauliflower dish. The appetizers tricked us into staying, honestly because the dinner was disappointing. The avocado on the Cobb salad was frozen, not fresh. The broccoli and cauliflower was only cauliflower (green and white cauliflower literally no broccoli) and also, frozen. When asked to have the carrots lightly glazed with the brown sugar and honey glaze, we got push back from the wait staff. Also got push back when we asked for an additional serving of ranch dressing. The chicken sliders, listed as an entree, came without sides and the chicken on all four sliders probably weighed a total of 4oz. We spent $161 for four people to dine here and are extremely disappointed, wish we would have spent that money elsewhere. Also, the Old Fashioned and Cosmopolitan cocktail were unbalanced and extremely diluted. We stopped in here twice during our weekend in Herman. First stop was for a tasting. My hubby and I shared a tasting for $5 and sampled the various alcoholic beverages made there. The pourer was knowledgeable and friendly. Later that weekend we stopped in for dinner and to listen to music. The band was good. Our server was attentive. Visiting Herman for the first time and Fernweh was by far one of our favorite experiences. Our bartender was amazing and went above and beyond in answering our questions questions. I visited Fernweh while seeing my cousin in Hermann. My initial impression was very positive. They have a very attentive staff that make sure your needs are met. We had the spinach artichoke dip and it was unexpected and delicious. Instead of a typical hot, melty dip, it was served cold and with warm, crispy pita chips. It was yummy but I wish it had more spinach and artichokes in it than just cream cheese. For my meal I had the burger and side salad. I typically don't expect much from a side salad but their ranch dressing was a show stopper. It was light and lemony. I could've stopped my meal there and been happy. The burger was tasty with big mushroom pieces and juicy but nothing out of this world. My only complaint is that they charge you for including lettuce and tomato on the sandwich. We all split dessert among us. They were tasty but paled in comparison to the other items. I had a bit of sticker shock at the price of the meal (extra charge for a slice of lettuce and tomato, meals don't have sides, they're all extra) but overall very yummy. read more

We had a group of six that stopped in for dinner and some tastings. We were greeted immediately upon entering by a friendly staff member who worked to set up our table and quickly seat us. This building and the inside is beautiful! You can see the tanks upon entering, wooden floors, marble bathrooms, very cool! Once seated, we were greeted by our super friendly server, Kecia. She had SO much positive energy and knowledge about the whiskey and food. I am not a big whiskey person, but because of her description of the $10 tasting I decided to give it a try. She was able to give great descriptions of each whiskey and how to drink/taste them. Kecia also did a great job of explaining the menu and the pork special. The whiskey was really good! As I said, I am not a whiskey person, but it was smooth! I even liked the moonshine tasting! In addition to the whiskey, the food was also delicious. Everyone at our table enjoyed their meals. I ordered the pork belly tacos. The meat was cooked crisp, like bacon, which is not what I am used to. So it wasn't quite what I was expecting but it was still a really good meal. I got the green beans as my side and they were great- garlic-y and delicious. My husband ordered the pastrami Rueben and sweet potato fries. Both awesome! Highly recommend The Gardener for a light, refreshing gin-based drink. I also had a maple pecan old fashioned, per Kimberly's recommendation, which was phenomenal.
