My wife and I like to go on adventures. We recently went to Herman for my birthday. We decided to go to this restaurant after visiting Stone Hill winery. The restaurant is just next door to the winery. The food is largely German inspired. This could make it a bit hit or miss with some patrons. We ended up getting appetizers, salads, and soup. The French onion soup was fantastic. The atmosphere is decent. It is an older structure that has been refurbished. I enjoyed it. I liked how it felt old. So overall it has a unique vibe and good food, although with a limited menu. read more

This is a great little place that is attached to Stone Hill Winery. Probably one of the more famous Missouri wineries in the area. To start with... This place has an amazing ambiance! It is very romantic and extremely picturesque. Make sure you check my review on the Winery to see the rest of the photos. The service and the food. This place, though it isn't indicated anywhere, stopped seating after lunchtime and took a break between 2 pm and 4 pm. They weren't kicking diners out, but also wouldn't seat anyone till 4. This is a bit of a shock for those just trying to get a late lunch and missed the 2 pm deadline by a few minutes. There is no other close option for snacks or something of the like. And unfortunately, the attitude was very much of a... "well, sorry that you weren't prepared!" We almost didn't return, but we wanted a specific item off the menu. And to rate this place! (Just dropped my rating to 3 stars from 4 as I think of this. When we did return in time for dinner, the same person who didn't recognize us at all cheerfully greeted and seated us. The waitress was very good and knew her stuff. Even so far as to suggest a specific wine with my dinner when asked. The food - This is the main thing that lost a star. It was OK. I chose the German Trio, thinking of getting a little of everything. And, I did. However, when it says smaller portions (see menu picture), they mean it! There was a smallish brat, an incredibly small and overcooked piece of schnitzel (pictured), and lastly some overcooked pork with a sauce all over it. I believe they get away with serving this kind of food for several reasons. a.) The sauce is amazing! And yes, it is on lots of the food or on the side as you wish. b.) The winery has a trolley that runs to it. So many visitors are "trapped" till it returns, so a place to eat makes sense. Also, the place's main concern is wine. The average customer is at least lightly sauced and will view this as the best meal ever because they are going to remember the sauce! Those of you who typically read my reviews often times know that I give each venue the benefit of a doubt and will go eat at them a few times to ensure it wasn't just a fluke. But not this time. I found nothing extremely redeeming other than the convenience of eating right after drinking a bunch of wine. This place touts itself as one of the premier, old school, and fancy restaurants in Hermann. It is not. Pick one of the others and have a better meal. read more

We've been coming to Hermann for 26 years and we always make a point to eat at the Vintage Restaurant. I called earlier today to make a reservation for two and although the message says to leave your reservation request and phone number so they can return your call, no one ever called me back. When we arrived at 6:00 hoping that they might be able to get us in, there were about three or four tables seated, no one waiting, and very few cars in the parking lot. The hostess immediately informed us that they had no tables available and were fully booked with reservations. When asked why I never received a call back to tell me they couldn't accommodate us, I was told "they were too busy to return phone calls." I have a hard time believing that with a 75% empty restaurant at 6:00 pm they had no way to accommodate two people. To say we were disappointed, is an understatement. It looked like to us, they just aren't that interested in having anyone's business. We will think twice about ever returning and are sad to have to say that after many years of good memories at the restaurant. read more

Incredible food, drinks, service, and a really neat atmosphere! The converted barn has unique artifacts and talking pieces. The prime rib was incredible! The Brussels were smoked with a lush buttery texture. The potatoes were done to perfection and fluffy. The rainbow trout was dry from being overcooked. We understand it's not trout season, but burying it in crapes was disappointing. Great food presentation overall! The wine is fantastic! The Hellbender was a great recommendation by our server. Authentic German cuisine in a gorgeous winery. The ambiance is charming and authentic. The prices are amazing! Thus far I've in my year and a half living in Missouri, The vintage is the best value. After a 5 hour bike on the The Katy Trail, we earned our amazing late lunch at The Vintage. Amazing sausage, sourkraut, German potato salad and braised red cabbage. DON'T miss the French onion soup. First time here . Had lunch here with my sister in law this use to be a barn and the booths were built in where the stalls use to be . The chutes where the hey came down for the horses were still there . A very interesting place . I had the kartoffelpuffer which more like hash browns . My husband and I wanted something light and we love German food, so we ordered the German Duo to split. It was the perfect amount of food for the two of us to have a light lunch. The German Duo is a wurst (with whole grain mustard), half a schnitzel, braised cabbage, potato salad, and choice of sauces. I wanted the lemon dill sauce and my husband wanted the brown mushroom sauce so we asked if we could have a little of both. Yes we could! It was absolutely wonderful German food. We cleaned our plate and felt nicely full without being so stuffed that we were uncomfortable. If you're in Hermann, this is a great stop for German dining. read more

We had reservations and had to wait to be seated. Once seated a member of our party had to find a server to ask for service after waiting about 15 minutes and watching other tables, that arrived after us, get service. We had to ask for water twice. The food was just ok with the Sauerbraten being dry and tough. When we mentioned the dryness/toughness the server offered to bring a steak knife. We had bread pudding for dessert that was dry and burnt and served barely luke warm. We have had a good experience in the past. Not sure what happened but we may not come back next year during our annual fall visit to Hermann. read more

Took my family here while on vacation and it didn't disappoint. The German food was amazing and the burgers were downright fantastic. The service was ok but the ambiance made up for any shortfalls. We will for sure go back. One note though Herman basically shuts down from Christmas to New Year's. read more

We didn't realize we would be going through Herrmann when we went to look at purchasing a trailer. On the way back through, we stopped for dinner. The last time we were in Herrmann, we didn't make it here to eat. I was excited they were open so we could give it a go. I was filled with excitement when I realized the inside was a renovated barn, and we were able to sit in a booth, which used to be a stall. We both ordered the French Onion soup. There is a reason it reads 'famous'. It was so delicious and cheesy. It's probably the best I have had in a while. For dinner, I ordered the grilled chicken spaetzle, which is made in-house, and hubs got the German Trio. Again... delicious! The salad was fresh with a great house made balsamic vinaigrette and 2 warm delightful rolls. I also got a side of the warm german potato salad having bacon flavor with a hint of something tart. With all the food and Norton wine, we did not have room for dessert, unfortunately. Cassidy took very good care of us during our visit. read more

My two friends and I came here because we like Stonehill wine. When we got there the hostess got ready to seat us because it wasn't very busy but the manager stopped her and asked if we had a reservation. Since we didn't, she said we had to wait 15 min, which was very rude. We politely waited 15 min then we asked if we could be seated since we waited 15 min. They said "they were working on it." What had they been doing for the last 15 min? After finally being seated, we ordered a bottle of wine and an hors d'oeuvre. The waiter brought the wine but didn't pour it for us. I figured since it was such a fancy place that made you wait 15 min if you don't have a reservation that they should be fancy enough to pour your wine. I ordered the Vintage Kase Spaetzle and the crispy onions on top were burnt so they were definitely crispy. Overall, it was a disappointing experience. read more

Everyone talks about the ambiance, the cool surroundings and being next to the winery, but I'm just going to talk about one thing that blew me away: the French Onion soup. Oh my lord. I order this soup when I travel and anywhere I see it and when it came out, by looks, I was not impressed. It looked pretty average. So I didn't even take a picture. But this is the best I've ever had! The depth of flavor and the ingredients just worked in a way that I loved. So I'm going back and I hope that wasn't a fluke. The chicken spaetzle dish we had there two nights ago was great. 3 of the 4 diners at our table loved it! The 4th person had snitzle which she liked very much. Their French onion soup is quite good, having had it in the past. They had a spectacular multi-course price fixe dinner during New Year's week. It was tender, perfectly prepared beef medalians. The other courses were very nice. This restaurant is planning more of the price fixe dinners which I Highly recommend. They do a very nice green salad with a refreshing house dressing. For a light meal I would definitely order their house salad and French Onion soup. Add in a potato pancake with apple garnish for a nice yet simple meal. read more

We had a reservation at 6:00 pm to celebrate my husband's birthday with two other couples. This was the best part of our night... getting seated. When we were sat, they did not tell us that many of the main German dishes we were there for were out. If they had told us then, we would have probably headed out without any issues. It just kept getting worse. We didn't find out until we finally were asked our food order around 6:30. Our server acted like we were not even there most of the time, and we had to flag her down to even get water refills. We did not receive our salads till almost 7:30, and even after finishing them, she would not take the plates off our table. People who came in an hour after us had their food and were ready to leave before we even got our main course. I have a few food allergies, and it was like they could not seem to remember what I kept asking them for. The food was sub par, steaks were over cooked, fatty, and so dry. If you are wondering why we ordered steak at a German restaurant, see above. I ended up not even eating my food. No one checked to see how our food was, service, nothing. Even when the waitress saw most of us had not touched our food, no questions were asked, if we would like to see a manager, or even a can we get you something else? We will not return. read more

Emailed a few weeks before our stay in Hermann to see if we needed reservations for dinner. Told them we would be celebrating my husband's birthday. Did not hear back for a few days then they asked how many. I replied 2 and did not hear back from them. Called and left a message with no response. Emailed a few days before our arrival and was told that we were all set. Beautiful setting high on a hill and the remodel of an old carriage house was charming. The spinach dip appetizer was good. Ordered salads, but mine came with the incorrect dressing. Sangria and beer were wonderful. My husband thoroughly enjoyed the German trio. I ordered the beef medallions. Was not given a steak knife and server assured me I wouldn't need one. Unfortunately it was needed as the medallion was tough and contained quite a bit of gristle. The brussel sprouts were bitter and the barley had too much dill for my taste. My husband brought home bread pudding which he said was some of the best he had ever had. wow the food here was amazing. This restaurant is located in an old barn building on the grounds of Stone Hill winery in Hermann, Missouri. They have the booths set up in the same locations as the stables that were previously there with similar decoration and building features as close to the original as they could make it. You have to try the "potato salad" when you are here, it is not at all what you would think of when you hear those words. It is warm and seasoned potatoes with a tiny hint of sweetness, I loved them. I loved my entire meal and the moscato wine was good too! The service was fine, it was a quiet day when we went, kind of drizzling outside, so not too busy. Loved the atmosphere and food! read more

Amazing! Not only is Stone Hill right next door (which equals amazing wine), but the food was unique and so yummy! We had fried pickles that were oh so yummy. Then I ordered the Vegetable Spaetzle - Small German Dumplings and it was so good! Not something that I had ever had. I had a happy plate! That doesn't happen often. The portion size was perfect and I truly loved the dish. I especially loved that there was an option for people that don't eat meat! Finally, we ordered the black forest cake and of course it was delish! I have had german food before and wasn't very into it, but my mind has been very changed. We went here purely for the schnitzel! We were not disappointed! We tried the pretzels and potato pancakes because we live about 3 hours away and wanted to be able to make a good recommendation for family AND we were starving! We have had schnitzel while in Europe and have tried other German restaurants in the states; we really enjoyed the schnitzel here and will be back! The only thing I would request is a few more German choices on the menu. Chicken schnitzel or dumplings. The potato salad, cabbage, potato pancakes and pretzels were all very tasty! read more

We have enjoyed this restaurant on past trips to Hermann, but our recent visit was not a good experience. The wine was good, but the service and meal were lousy. I had the burnt ends, which were slices of beef SMOTHERED in a gravy that also covered the accompanying potato dish and even the undercooked broccoli and cauliflower. This was my birthday dinner out and such a disappointment. Dessert option was just that, one option; bread pudding. Terribly disappointing. Learned from our B&B host after the fact, that the restaurant has gone through numerous chefs. Well, they need to go through one more. read more

My friend and I spontaneously decided to go to St. Louis from KC for a weekend trip and learned Missouri has many wineries along the way. Stone Hill Winery was our first stop and it was around lunchtime so we decided to eat here. This restaurant is on the winery site, just through the barn doors. It was a late lunch so it makes sense that it was kind of empty when entering. They had some German food on their menu and the typical salads and burgers. I got a side garden salad with their house vinaigrette and the "hold the beef" burger aka it's a veggie patty. My friend got the German trio with a side of potato pancakes. I thought my salad was amazing except they could give less salad dressing in the future. Like the first couple of bites were good and then the rest were drenched with the dressing. I'm not a big person on having a lot of salad dressing but if that's your thing, you'll like the salad more than me. I just don't like when I reach the bottom of the plate that there is so much salad dressing that you can drink from the plate. My "hold the beef" burger came out with good tasting fries and a pickle spear. I did enjoy the bun cause it was buttery soft. But I think I got a little freaked out cause the patty was very pink in the middle. I mean I know it's a veggie patty but I've never seen a veggie patty with pink in the middle. I still ate some of it and I didn't get any stomach issues so that's saying something. My friend said her German trio was okay, that the food was edible but not mind blowing. She enjoyed her potato pancake a lot though, especially with the apple jam they provided. I do agree with her that the food is something to eat if you are at the winery and feel hungry but if I ever stop by Hermann again, then I would like to try other restaurants the town has instead. The restaurant being in the barn provides fascinating history but I think you can find a better restaurant in their downtown area to eat. read more

We had a very excellent German meal during oktoberfest! Everything we had was amazing. We will be coming back every year!

We were in town for only two days and were only able to catch them for Thursday lunch before we were on our way out -- and I am so glad we did! There weren't very many people there and we got seated in one of their very large booth areas. We were recommended the German Trio which we heard was rather large. There was only two of us so we opted to split it and got both of the sauces for the schnitzel. Oh. My. Gosh. Everything about this dish was delicious. My boyfriend comes from a German family and spent a year working in Germany a few years ago. He absolutely loved every part of this dish: pork schnitzel, potato pancake, German sausage and sauerbraten. His family has sauerbraten every Christmas and this one is quite the contender. One of the best German restaurants you can find. We will definitely be thinking about this place until we can be in Hermann next! read more

Pleasantly surprised! My family picked to go here for lunch and after reading the reviews I was more than hesitant to try it out, however I was impressed. We had a group of 12 people and our service was great. Our server was Sam and she was quick, pleasant, and was able to deal with the range of ages at the table (a 1 year old to 98 year old). For apps we got the pretzel sticks, fried pickles, and chicken flatbread. I didn't eat the pickles but the others were great. For lunch we split several items including the Huzzah, Rueben, and the Saurbraten. We loved all and votes were split between the Rueben and sauerbraten on which was the favorite. We also got the fries and potato pancake as our sides both were great!! My grandma and aunt got the quiche which they raved about and my cousin got the Schweineschnitzel which I was nervous for from previous reviews but he was was good. Overall our experience was awesome and I would recommend. I have heard lunch is better than dinner, obviously I don't know from experience but something to consider. read more

Wife has a very tasty salad, I had a hot roast beef sandwich ( Sauerbraten) that was to be served on a toasted ciabatta bread with swish cheese. The bread was not toasted and the roast beef did not cover the bread. It was just ok. Service was just ok, when the waiter took are order never asked if we wanted something to drink. Then we had to flag him down to get a drink order, then had to flag him down for a refill. Also they only sell Pepsi products and we are not a fan. I know, I should've found Walnut Bistro, but after a stingy wine tasting, no breakfast and learning there's not a findable coffee shop in Hermann, we were starved. So we chose to eat at the Vintage Restaurant for lunch. Their limited menu seemed okay, and I stepped out of my comfort zone and ordered the pork schnitzle. It was a breaded pork cutlet on German potato salad and red cabbage, small for the portions baring the cost.The restaurant was rather full, but we were waited on immediately. We ordered. And our food came quickly. It actually was good, not great but good. Okay, but satisfying. I could've used more German Potato salad. Atleast that's what I thought. I thought the sauce looked like it had been rewarmed, What was odd was everything needed a touch of flavor, so I added a little salt. At first I wanted the spatzle. And I'm wondering if I had got the saptzle if it had been perfect. I've yet to find good German food. This place wasn't the worst, not at all, nor the best. If you're hungry, it exists. If I return to Hermann, (no need to), Walnut Bistro is on my list. Skip this place, unless you're starving. read more

We were seated smack in the middle of the restaurant even though the restaurant was clearly very empty. The food was spot on German , on par or better with what I had in Zurich this summer. The French onion soup may be the best I've had in my 56 years. The server was very sweet and helpful. There were two hostesses, a man and a woman. The guy was awesome and very welcoming, the female was honestly a bit rude and behaved poor in my opinion and was the only negative , perhaps she was having a bad day? Overall excellent visit!
