The food was spot on German , on par or better with what I had in Zurich this summer. The French onion soup may be the best I've had in my 56 years. The server was very sweet and helpful. There were two hostesses, a man and a woman. The guy was awesome and very welcoming, the female was honestly a bit rude and behaved poor in my opinion and was the only negative , perhaps she was having a bad day? Overall excellent visit! Spent the weekend in Hermann, wanted a real meal (not bar food) and was looking forward to dinner here. I ordered the braised, boneless, beef ribs & my friend ordered the ribeye. It took FOREVER for the food to come even though they were not terribly busy. We ordered the potato pancakes, spoiler alert....they are more scattered hashbrowns than potato pancake ($12). Also got a side of red cabbage. We were sat around 6:20 and food did not arrive until 7:30, manager came by (not requested by us but appreciated), apologized and offered us free drinks (declined) or a free dessert (also declined). What if we were nondrinkers & don't do dessert? Once the food came out, it was tasty albeit rather pricey. When the bill came, there was no adjustment for our exceptionally long wait time. I paid and on the way out, I asked the manager about a weekend special that we were not informed of, I let him know this, his response? "Oh I'm sorry about that". Hermann, is a nice place to visit. Really wanted to love this place. When coming here I expected a fancier establishment but people were dressed in T-shirt's. I set a reservation for a Saturday night for my wife and I and we had to wait 10 minutes for a table to be set. I'm not mad about waiting the 10 minutes, I'm mad they gave us a booth for 6 people. I even told the host it was a valentines dinner. It was obvious the reservations aren't planned out very well. I ordered the beef rib and received the pork. The food is overpriced for the quality. The vegetable spatzle was amazing, french onion was awesome, and so was the beef rib once I got it about 10 minutes after the other food came to our table. Vegetable medley was so mushy. Can't leave vegetables steaming or that will happen which means they prepare the food and keep it warm through out the night. My wife ordered the Trio but they were out of snitchel. A German restaurant ran out of snitchel on a Saturday night. Also, if you order the Port, buying the bottle is a way better deal. Wish it was a better experience read more

3.5 stars Decided to eat at the restaurant while visiting Stone Hill Winery. It turned out to be a good decision. We arrived shortly after 11 to a 15-20 minute wait. I'm glad we arrived when we did as the wait time increased to 45 minutes or so before we were seated. As for the menu, I was apprehensively optimistic. Our family is familiar with authentic German food and we're often underwhelmed by German restaurants in the US. We started with an order of pretzels. They were so good. Crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. The accompanying cheese sauce was good. The kids ordered grilled cheese sandwiches with fries and were happy with their choice. My husband I decided to order two items and share. We opted for the trio (sauerbraten, schnitzel--we chose jager--, and wurst) and a wurst platter. Neither one of us are big fans of red cabbage, so we subbed them for spatzle. The sauerbraten was the star of the plate. It was super small on the trio, but very tender and delicious. The schnitzel was fine. It wasn't the most tender I've ever had, nor was the sauce mind blowing, but it wasn't bad either. The wursts were really good and served with a generous helping of coarse mustard. I was pleasantly surprised by the delicious potato salad (so often I feel like this is the item that gets messed up most). I wouldn't order the spatzle again. It seemed to be deep fried and was greasy and tough. If we were to return, I'd order the wurst plate again and skip the trio in favor of a full order of sauerbraten. read more

My wife and I joined our friends for a tour of the Missouri wine region. After an afternoon of wine tasting, we checked into our B&B. After asking the inn keeper and others about dinner at The Vintage, we were assured that it would not be busy on a Tuesday evening and so no reservation would be necessary. We arrived around 5:30pm and were seated quickly. The restaurant is beautiful, but somewhat small (perhaps seating 40 people or so in the main dining area) and tables are very close to one another. Shortly after being seated there came a rush of patrons. We sat patiently for more than 15 minutes without being approached by a server. Finally someone addressed us stating that she is helping our server and that she will take our drink order. We decided to order everything to avoid further delay. We waited over 15 min for our drinks. We then sat and sat while other patrons, who were seated well after us, we're served. A full hour after we we seated our entries were served. Yippee, right? Well,except that our salads had never been delivered. When the restaurant realized the error, they offered to "pack our salads to go!" REALLY! As for the food, it was a mixed bag. My wife and I ordered the combo and the bratwurst was cold and the sauerbraten was somewhat tough. The pork schnitzel was pretty good. Guess when we finally saw the server assigned to our table (2 hours later)! When it was time to present our bill!! She apologized and stated that our bill was credited an amount to reflect the lack of salad. Wow! On top of everything, we waited so long for our server to return to take our payment thatI gave up waiting and went directly to the reception desk that doubled as the cashier. We showed up as a group of 4 on a Tuesday night. We were seated quickly and our first thought was that the tables were really close together and we hoped nobody would be seated next to us. The restaurant is a renovated stable and is very cute, but crowded and noisy. Nobody showed up for over 10 minutes when they finally brought us water. We waited at least another 10 minutes before we had someone (not a server), take our order. Whoever it was said they were trying to help out, but you could tell they had no idea what they were doing. My husbands French onion soup was brought out and he liked it. We waited and waited for our salads and bread, but that wasn't to happen, they brought our entrees. When we stated we didn't get salads, she said she could put them in a to go box.....what? My husband and I got the German Trio and asked for a potato pancake instead of German potato salad. There was plenty of food and everything was good except the wurst, and that's because it was barely warm. Everything else was piping hot, so it just means it was sitting back there and they stuck it on our plate. Our friends both got the pork schnitzel and loved it. They did finally bring us a plate of a variety of rolls. Overall, the food was good, but service was awful. We were there forever. This was a bit of a bummer. The Lady and I gave this place a try while in town for wurst-fest. A festival celebrating German sausages. So of course we wanted some German food. Also growing up with in a German family I was ready for some. I go for the Schweineschnitzel. Basically a pork cutlet pounded thin, seasoned, breaded and fried. With the Jager sauce(mushroom wine sauce) German potato salad, red cabbage, and an added potato pancake. The Lady went for a Sauerbraten Sandwich. My schnitzel was so bland. Just no flavor. The Jager sauce was just grey gravy with no flavor to speak of. All of it seeming to be missing any salt. The potato salad was ok, the red cabbage was standard out of jar fare and the potato pancake was also bland. The Lady gave up on her sandwich after a few bites. I tried it and basically all I could taste was the horse radish. We were both pretty let down. Overall I'm not sure what happened here. The Good Very nice dinning room. Very Charming. When the salad is the best part of your meal I would say there is likely a problem in the kitchen. The potato pancakes were raw and way underdone, a shame looks like they could have been good. The shrimp had no flavor at all, bland and a waste of good shrimp. My wife had the spaetlze's, "sadly" they had way too much cream sauce (swimming in sauce) that over shadowed them, with bland chicken. My German Grandma would not be happy with that! The one bright star is that the wine is still the best Missouri has to offer, for Missouri very good, I guess I just need to drink more before I eat! We split the German Trio which was made up of Schweinesscnitzel, Sauerbraten, Wurst and gourmet mustard. All top quality. Then paired our meal with a bottle of their Chambourcin. My wife and I were so excited to dine here as it was recommended by my boss. We had a wurst sampler and ghoulash. The wurst was pretty good and the latter was... meh. Bread pudding was rich in butter probably one of the best we had. There was a 30 minute wait, but what bothered me the most was the checking of ID after I used my credit card for payment. My wife and I waited for the other tables around us to check if the server will check their IDs. Clearly, she didn't. Did she check ours since we were the only Asians (or non-white) dining? I always enjoy going to the Vintage Restaurant. It is an historic old carriage house which adds to the atmosphere. The food although a little pricy is always good. I have always been treated with respect when I come in. I only go there once a month or so but the owner and wait staff always know my favorite table. One of the waiters who sadly no longer works there, always asked if I wanted my "usual". He remembered my order exactly each time. Felt rushed and it was clear no one wanted to be working on NYE. Food came out before we were even done with our apps and salads. Salmon overcooked, veggies soggy and pork schnitzel was over fried, over salted and dry. All of it was clearly cooked hours prior to serving. I'll be honest I'm not a huge German food fan but this place was great. Our server Kerie was awesome and hilarious. She gave great advice and told us some info about the town. We split a mushroom Swiss struedel which was delicious. Also we got a shrimp blt (grilled not fried) that hit home. Nice fresh shrimp and great sauces on both dishes. The server did not bring drinks until after the meal was served and never checked in with us. The onion soup was very good. Salads seemed stale. My husband had the schnitzel with dill sauce, potato salad and cabbage. Schnitzel was fair but sides were funky tasting. I had Salmon with green beans. I often enjoy salmon but this was inedible, fishy with a very pungent mustard sauce and unseasoned breadcrumbs. As others have said Stone Hill, you are missing an opportunity. Spent $80. My husband and I had lunch at The Vintage. The former stable had a nice atmosphere. We started with a hot pretzel appetizer. $8 was kind of pricey for 2 (7") pretzel sticks with dip but they were very tasty. My husband ordered the special, a Cuban sandwich, and I ordered a Rueben sandwich. Both were delicious. Each came with a side of fries. One other diner exclaimed, "These are Exceptional fries". We both agreed. Fried to perfection with crunchy bits. Our waiter, Grant, was affable, friendly and very attentive. When we expressed interest, he cheerfully offered history of the building. We were here on Saturday for Bacon Fest, so it was pretty busy. We put our group on the list for a table and were told it would be about a 45 minute wait. We did some wine tasting and came back to the restaurant at about 5-10 minutes before our reservation was ready. When were waiting we noticed that a table was empty, but not cleared. We asked them to check on clearing the table and they promptly did so, but no one came to seat us. We had to ask again for them to seat us at the table. Our 45 min wait turned into about an hour. We were seated with menus and we were ready to order by the time the waitress arrived. We put in appetizers and main courses for our group. As we were waiting about 20 minutes, we noticed another group, about our size, who had come in after us had gotten their appetizers. We asked our waitress why they had been served first and she told us because the puff pastry in the brie takes longer to cook (uhh ok). Normally places will bring them out as they are or ready, unless otherwise specified. We got our appetizers about another 15-20 minutes later (the same time other groups had come in after us were getting their entrees). We were starving by this point, so we devoured our apps. The brie that was allegedly holding up the appetizers wasn't brought out and when we asked about that, the waitress said she thought we wanted it with the main course....(seriously?). The potato pancakes things were pretty good that we had, but the pickles were average and were room temperature when they brought them out to us. I also ordered French Onion soup with the apps. It was burnt and our waitress noticed it and told me if it was too overdone she would give me a free dessert or something. Yes it was burnt, but I was so hungry, so I ate it anyway. Another 15 minutes rolls by- our waitress never came over to give us a status or anything. At this point we were done. I asked the hostess/manager/cashier whoever she was that we wanted to pay for our apps and leave. She was like well it hasn't been that long your order was put in at 2:03...yeah that was when we asked about the appetizers the 1st time (we were seated around 1:35-1:40). I'm guessing our waitress forgot to put in our order and rather apologize for it and own up to it just left us waiting. They discounted our appetizers and soup by 1/2 price and we left. Whoever took payment from me requested contact information. I haven't been contacted (this happened on Sunday and it's only Tuesday though). This was an awful experience that could've been turned around by someone taking ownership when they realized the mistake was made. read more

My wife and I had dinner on Tuesday August 13. While my dinner was an average three star, she ordered the chicken spaetzle with blue cheese and found it to be inedible because it was loaded with garlic. I tasted it and found the same garlic flavor. I cannot overstate how bad this dish was. Neither of us are experts on German food, so I researched and found several spaetzle recipes on-line and none of them used garlic. This dish was not prepared properly and I should not have had to pay for it (but did not ask for a freebie). I only give it two stars because my German Trio special was edible. The wife and I stopped in for lunch on a busy Saturday. Signage doesn't help much for finding this place as you drive in, but you can only get so lost. The place was hopping - they asked us to wait 15-20 minutes for our table, even though we discovered when we were seated there were at least three tables ready to go. Oh well, I guess they didn't want to flood the kitchen with a bunch of orders at once. We had a craft beer while we waited. I think it was just $3.50 and it was good, so no complaints about the wait. For dinner we had two small caesar salads and the sampler lunch, which featured a brat with kraut, schnitzel and sauerbraten. I won't say we loved all of it, but it was freshly prepared and very interesting. The salads were absolutely excellent - best caesar I've had in years. The sauerkraut was the sourest I've ever had, brat was...can't remember it...okay, I guess, the schnitzel came with a delicious dill sauce and was easily the best item on the plate. The sauerbraten looked like it had gravy, but it ended up being apple butter, which we thought was kind of odd. Potato salad was pretty much standard German warm style, like Mom makes, which is good. The thing we liked most was that it really felt like we were in Germany. I've been a few times and this place is a good knockoff on the touritsy areas in Bavaria. Service was very friendly and prompt. I'm kind of glad we didn't go for dinner, but if you're in Hermann for a getaway, a stop here makes it a more authenticly unique experience. I'm surprised to see so many good reviews of this place. Was in Hermann recently and this seemed THE place to dine, so decided to try it. I enjoyed Stone Hill Winery itself, but can't say the same about Vintage Restaurant. The place is housed in the former horse barn just west of the main house. I like that the horse stalls have been turned into booths with tables, and that the hay chutes have been left in the building. It keeps the ambience historic. But the decor is straight out of the late '80s. Think dusty rose and ruffled curtains. Along with ugly grape-festooned wallpaper. A loop tape of cheesy classical music completed the experience. I ordered the salmon entree with veggies and three-cheese mashed potatoes. The salmon was overcooked, the veggies were frozen, and the potatoes tasted like they were out of a box. All this for $20. Wow. I have to say, though, that the service was excellent. Our servers were the one bright spot. This restaurant was disappointing. Seemed like after all the talk of "food and wine pairings" that Stone Hill didn't deliver on the food part. However, I have to say that none of the other places we ate on the trip were very good either. And I thought all were overpriced. Just seems that Stone Hill is wasting a good opportunity. It's a great old building. With a postmodern makeover and a new chef, it could go far. With good, affordable food to match Stone Hill's good, affordable wines. read more

We had a girls day in Hermann and stopped here for lunch on our tours. We ordered 3 appetizers, a bottle of wine, and salads. Everything was great. Most of the table got spinach salads w/ bacon vinagerette and I got a regular salad w/ ranch dressing. We were all happy with the dressings and how great they were. The appetizers we got were the artichoke hearts. the pretzel sticks, and a shrimp flatbread pizza. We ate every bite and thought they offered a lot of flavor. I really liked that the bottle of wine we ordered they were able to split it into 1/5ths so that we all paid a portion. On our next trip we will be back here for our meal. Great service too!!! We arrived in Hermann during the early evening on a Friday night and wanted to grab a nice sit-down dinner so we came here. The Vintage Restaurant is the restaurant associated with Stone Hill Winery. The restaurant itself is located in what appears to be a former horse stable. They have tables and booths throughout. I would highly recommend grabbing a booth as they are pretty big and rather intimate. We started by looking at the wine list. What I love most about the Vintage Restaurant is that their wine list is ridiculously cheap. I came with a girlfriend who loves sweet wine so we ordered the Kick'n Kolada. I was so shocked to find out that it was only $9. Most places charge $9 for a glass of wine....so to find out that a bottle was that price was shockingly delightful. The wine was pretty sweet and had a nice pina colada taste. For dinner, I had the Asparagus and Mushroom Pappardelle. The size was a little small considering the price ($16), but I thought it tasted pretty good. The dish comes with sauteed asparagus, mushrooms, herbs, and parmesan on top of noodles in a mushroom broth. For dessert, I had the chocolate cake which had either strawberries or cherries along with whipped cream baked into it. It was pretty good, but nothing spectacular. In terms of service, we were extremely well attended to. My wine and food came out really quickly. Furthermore, our water glasses were constantly being refilled and they cleared the table pretty frequently throughout the evening. I have eaten dinner here twice, and both times have been impressed with the food. They have good authentic German food along with several other options. This past time, I ordered the spätzle of the day, which was served with ribeye and a bleu cheese sauce! It was very good! I guess I only wished the portions were larger so I could bring some home. I ate here with a group of 12; it was a wedding reception dinner of sorts. The staff was really accommodating and they gave us the option of using a fixed menu or the whole menu for our dinner party. They also set us up in a special little area of the restaurant (which has a lovely, warm atmosphere). We had a little two-tier cake which we took to the restaurant earlier in the day. They set it up on a beautiful table and even had a staff member cut & serve the cake for us for no additional charge. Everybody said that their food was delicious and the meat-and-cheese plates have a great variety of products. Get some kind of schnitzel and try to charcuterie plate. read more

It is obvious that the food was pre-cooked and microwaved, when it wasn't out of a can, carton or box. There was literally not one delicious item on any of our plates. It is clear that Stone Hill is riding the coattail of "Well, they're already here, maybe they'll just stay and eat." My favorite place for dinner in Hermann. The cuisine is fairly simple German food that probably won't blow you away. However, I don't know that you are going to find food that does anywhere in Hermann. What I like about Vintage is that the service is always friendly and and atmosphere is relaxed. On top of that, they serve the Stone Hill wines at the same price for which you can purchase them in stores (roughly $15 a bottle), so if you don't mind fairly sweet white wines, you can split a bottle over dinner for a very good cost. read more

The lunch meal was beyond outstanding and at a great price. The restaurant seating was COVID complying and the staff offered very good service. The food was the star. Their Harvest Salad was outstanding, the best such salad we've ever eaten. The soft pretzels and cheese curds were also very tasty. I highly recommend this restaurant. read more
