As far as atmosphere goes, you won't find it here. The decor is very bland and boring, although some feeble attempts were made to make it look "Mexicanish or whatever". But just go here and try the food. Particularly the Mexican chicken soup. It's served with a buncha avocado, pico de gallo, shredded cheese, sour cream, lime and cilantro. It is a LAKE of soup. Seriously, it's huge and pretty pretty cheap too. It has flavor shooting out its eyeballs (which it doesn't actually have because it's just soup...gross). I didn't even order it, but my brother & his girlfriend did because they were in the know on how amazing it is. I ordered chilaquiles which were also fantastic! Nothing wrong with corn tortilla chips, shredded chicken, spicy red sauce and a ton of melty cheese. Their margaritas are really good, but not the best I've had. This is the worst Mexican food ever, I dont expect much in non border states but you could tell the refried beans were canned and unseasoned. Cheese was gloopy sauce style and everything was soggy even the tostada. Enchiladas are impossible to mess up unless you are using fake cheese sauce. Enchilada sauce- hey I used can too not sure what they did to it. Service was fine but the food is sub standard. When are restaurants going to realize you can get better ingredients fresh at the grocery so dont serve SYSCO yuck ingredients. read more

We arrived and got seated immediately. Our waitstaff was kind and courteously helpful. I forgot to order my Cadillac Margarita without salt. Our waitstaff didn't bat an eye and fixed it right away. I need to say it was mucho bueno. Drinks for our party of 4 arrived right on time, too. I ordered the creamed shrimp for my meal and it was quite tasty. My spouse ordered the burrito supremo and he really liked it. The other couple ordered the huge beef burrito to share along with a side of refried beans. They polished off the burrito but the beans were so large I bright them home with the remaining part of the meal I couldn't consume. Personally, I could have used a bit more spice in my food but it was still good and I'd go again! read more

Food was just okay. About half of our party of ten finished their meal. Service was awful. The waitress could not have been more inconvenienced by us showing up. It was 100 degrees outside so while I understand that it may not be super cold, it didn't feel like there was much air conditioning at all. We were the only party in the restaurant and by the time we left, we understood why this place is not recommended by the locals. read more

This used to be the good Mexican place in town before Mike passed away, but they are extremely petty on their dollar taco day, as they list online that any order over $5 comes with chips and salsa. Ordering with 5 co-workers for pickup we always send one or 2 people with separate orders and payment to keep things less confusing. Today the manager decided that we were "taking advantage" of the restaurant by ordering separately and refused to give us all of our chips. The manager actually had the lady running the cash register (just after handling cash from several people) go through our bags and split the chips and salsa in half and then put it back. Not sure why the menu says this but then they yell at you for ordering for multiple people. Stopped in while in town for business, and even though I've only tried the chicken & rice covered in queso, it was tasty enough to warrant 5 stars. Really hit the spot for lunch. The green salsa Verde I asked for was really good, also. Super small, super quaint, and it's not really going to win any awards for decor, but the meal I had was great. We stopped in for a quick dinner and drink. We ordered the top shell margarita pitcher ($30) for the four of us. And it was absolutely horrible! I am pretty sure the mix went bad or something. It has a weird aftertaste and none of us could drink it. Things happen, so we tried to be reasonable. We politely notified them and requested a replacement. They refused and suggested that we "stir it again"... I've had many margaritas in my lifetime, so there was no way they were going to convince us that it just needed to be stirred a little more. The customer service was horrible, and it looked like there was a bunch of young teenagers running the place. The restaurant was pretty much empty and no one else was drinking. Perhaps that should've been a sign. A couple of us felt sick that night in the next day. And we didn't finish our food either. My suggestion is to avoid this place altogether. read more

This restaurant is nothing special. We went in to order some dinner and margaritas, we were first given a tiny basket of crumbled up chips. We had to ask for new chips because they were too small to scoop any salsa with. Then we ordered a pitcher of top shelf margaritas. When the pitcher came, we knew right away something was off. The margaritas tasted bad, with a weird chlorine almost taste and we could not taste any alcohol whatsoever. We asked them if they could replace it and they said we could order something else but would still have to pay for the $28 pitcher because we had "already drank half". This was not true at all, we had each had a few sips of it. Their solution was to stir the pitcher again. Then our waitress told us to "keep drinking and maybe it would taste better". As tourists, my friend and I were referred to this restaurant by the operator of the Hermann Trolley and we were lucky that we were. We could not have enjoyed this restaurant more. When we entered we were seated immediately by a friendly and attentive young man. He'd brought us chips and salsa and I asked for some extra-hot salsa, out of habit, before even trying the house salsa. I needn't have bothered as the house salsa was fantastic. It tasted freshly made and had the perfect amount of spice. It was quite possibly the best salsa that I've ever had. But then our server brought us some extra hot salsa verde that was somehow equally as good. I was in salsa heaven. The menu had a great selection of standard Mexican food items as well as some dishes that I'd never heard of before. I had a vegetarian meal that was filling and delicious. The meal was sizable and it was a little difficult to clean my plate but I couldn't bear to leave even a single bite behind. Every item tasted fresh and flavorful. Our visit to this restaurant became one of the high points of our trip. The restaurant itself was very clean and decorated with lively Mexican art. There were a few televisions in the dining area but the sound was turned off so they were not a distraction. When we paid the bill we were thanked warmly and we left very satisfied. Not good. The building was hot and the beer was hot. The Margarita had no tequila that we could taste. The food was mediocre at best. The taco salad bottom was all filled with soupy refried beans and very little meat. The taco salad bowl was burned. The salsa chips were stale. I want everyone in the Hermann area to share this status. It's from a friend of a friend. I've heard horror stories about the owner/manager of this restaurant, and obviously he has no clue what social media is about. "Wow what an experience. Last time we ever go to el ranchito. Told the manager about the service and orders being wrong and he didn't seem to care. So I told him we had given them their last chance at our business and he told me to pay the bill and get out. Dos primos will get all our business. Then the manager proceeds to tell me how much money he gave me for my sons trip and procedure in china and corrected him that the money was my sons NOT mine and he thru in a few choice words as did I in front all 3 or 4 customers. I realized it was time to get out before it escalated. I try to give everyone a fair shake business wise but that joker just needs some customer service training. My fiance and I decided to give this restaurant a try on our recent visit. That was a mistake! At least we were able to laugh about our bad experience. Why I thought to eat at a Mexican restaurant in a German town is something we keep asking ourselves. The atmosphere was dull, nothing authentic about it. The service was horrible.. We ordered a margartia that tasted awful. After 3 sips we asked the waiter for a beer. He argued that he put the tequila in himself and that the manager makes him pay for any mistakes, so he was not willing to take it off our bill. We explained that it was awful and regardless who pays for the drink, we were not drinking it! The food was okay but the overall atmosphere and lack of service made for a very weird and awkard experience. We ate as quickly as possible and got out of there. This place does an injustice to the quaint little town of Hermann. Mexican restaurants are my favorite and this is hands down the worst place I've ever been. read more

We were looking for a place halfway between Columbia and St. Louis, and ended up at El Ranchito. Bryce was our server, and he recommended the fajita nachos which were excellent. The fajita quesadilla also looked pretty good. My husband had the fajita dinner, and his only complaint was that the meat was chopped into very small pieces, instead of the usual strips of grilled chicken or beef. It's a very casual place, but the food was tasty and the service was good. Hermann is a very cool town, too. I'd like to go back during the daytime hours just to look around. read more
