This is a sausage house. Tons of coolers and freezers filled to the brim with their award winning meats. I grabbed a regular brat with kraut and mustard. It had a great snap and their incredible kraut really made the meal. I also picked up some beef sticks, and a German ring bologna because you only live once. Interesting place but the staff felt dismissive. When we walked in they just "we are done serving food but you can shop the store." It was our first time in and that was a missed opportunity to connect with new customers. I don't get the hype. I understand it's a German thing but we just didn't think it was that great. We went on a Saturday in mid-December at about 2pm and it took a few minutes to get a table. Two Best In Show wursts, potato salad, slice of chocolate cake and two bottles of water. Cost just over $40! The wursts have a.....how can I explain it....an authentic taste and I just don't like it. It's like a liver/organ meat taste. The only thing that comes up when I try to look it up is caraway seeds. That can't be it but I just don't get it. We had just come back from Bavaria a few weeks ago and several dishes we tried had that "funk". Please tell me if you go there and order this dish. Message me, leave a thumbs up, I just need to know if other people can taste it like my wife and I both do. The potato salad was ok. The chocolate cake slice was a typical cake slice you get anywhere else. I think it was the best thing we had there. Oh my! I had read one erroneous review here about how small the brats were and I must say, whoever said that was very picky. I'd like to think I'm picky but this was delicious. The casing on this bratwurst is very thin and easy to chew. We had the sauerkraut and baked beans plate, and I can honestly say that if you are looking for a place to eat in Hermann, come here. Enough said. There are high recommendations for this place, and you would be a fool to not at least stop by a sample something. I ended up buying some brats to take home and I later bought some for my son who lives out of town. The service is good too, as they make sure if you have any questions they get answered. If you're in Hermann and want truly exceptional food, go to Hermann Wurst Haus. Seriously--it's that simple. I had driven through Hermann plenty of times but never stopped until April 29, 2026. Now I'm wondering why I waited so long. Right away, this place stands out--vending machines outside stocked with their own brats (available anytime) and a dog-friendly patio. Already a win. Inside, we were greeted by owner Mike Sloan, who took the time to walk us through everything. That level of hospitality sets the tone. The staff was fantastic, and while waiting for our food (which came out quickly), we checked out their in-house products and free samples--impressive doesn't even begin to cover it. Food highlights: Reuben on rye (daily special): incredible "Best of Show Bratwurst": must-order German potato salad: better than what I've had in Baden-Baden Smoked gouda pasta salad + traditional potato salad: both excellent After talking with Mike, it's clear why everything is so good--this is passion-driven craftsmanship. This store/eatery is amazing. First and foremost, you have to understand that Hermann, MO, is a small historic town that was originally settled by a German/Swiss community. And there were great places to grab some cuisine. I won't say it is authentic, but I will tell you that it tastes good. This is primarily a shop that also has tables and a hot counter. There are many different kinds of brats, sausages, and other treats that you can not only get at the hot counter, but can also grab a package of to take home. Since they are selling, you can usually find several of the local wines, beers, and liquors for sale onsite, too. The staff has always been extremely kind, and the prices are fair, so this gets all the stars! read more

The place is super clean, plenty of seating with wooden tables reminiscent of German beer halls. They have other merchandise. I purchased some beef bones for the dogs. We were in Herman to vist the Deutschheim State Historic Site and went to the Herman Wurst Haus for lunch. This was a weekday during late August and the restaurant was not crowded. I'm told that during the peak season, the line can be "out the door". This is a place where you order at the counter and they deliver your food to your table. My wife and I both had bratwurst sandwiches - two different varities of bratwurst and our sandwiches were very good. They had German potato salad listed as a side dish for $5.99 which seemed high for a side but they said it was a big enough portion that my wife and I could split. I was disappointed in the portion size and feel that the $5.99 price tag was a bit steep considering the portion size. Being an "order at the counter" place, there wasn't much service. You paid for your beverages when you ordered and they were self-serve from the cooler. Overall - the bratwurst was very good; the German potato salad was excellent (even if a bit pricey) and the overall experience was very delightful. read more

Lady at the register couldn't have been nicer. Very pleasant. My friend and I ate there for lunch, it was a weekday, I got a Gorgonzola pear bratwurst, and she got the pulled pork sandwich. The bratwurst was just OK, in my opinion, and the pretzel bun was a real disappointment, not tasting like a pretzel at all. But what really got me is this is a terrible value for the price. You pay $10 for a bratwurst on a bun, some sauerkraut and some mustard sauce. It comes in a paper sandwich boat and there's absolutely nothing with it. Not a chip, pickle, or anything....that costs extra. Plus you are steered towards buying bottled water. We asked and they were gracious enough to fill some cups with water from the tap, but I just felt like the whole place was a tourist trap that had expensive food. The feel bordered on "cheapskate." I do understand that bratwurst is a very individualized thing and we've had bratwurst in many places that we didn't like at all, and some we did, so it's made differently depending on where you go. Decided to eat at the Wurst Haus as our timing found other businesses not open. We got the best of show brat and the jalapeno bacon that were to be on a pretzel bun. The bun wasn't pretzel. The jalapeno bacon had good flavor, not a standout. The best of show arrived cold and had to be heated. The best thing was the side cucumber salad. It was so good. Now this place knows how to do German food! The menu is a classic German take on great dishes. The menu has something for everyone, but I highly recommend trying a German dish. They have the classic German menu and then they also have some dishes with a modern twist! This is a deli style restaurant so you have to order your food at the counter, then go and eat at a table. They had tables inside and outside. We ordered the Chicken Snitzel and the Pear and Gorgonzola Bratwurst. Both were extremely tasty! The other great part of this place is the market they have on the inside. Replace the "u" in Wurst with an "o" -- and honestly, that says it all. I absolutely adore Hermann, MO. It's a sweet little town with all the cozy charm you could want. My husband and I have been stopping here for over 20 years during our military moves across the country. (Side note: He's from Kirksville, so Hermann is basically our unofficial pit stop.) Also, shoutout to Adam Puchta wine -- love that stuff! But I digress... onto the food. So, I ordered two sausage platters, all served on Styrofoam plates with plastic silverware. And guess what? That gourmet experience set me back a cool $93.00. Can we talk about sticker shock for a minute? Now, let's get to the "meat" of the matter: Portions sadly small. The sides were basically a large tablespoon. German potato salad: Surprisingly decent. Potatoes were firm (not mushy), with a nice flavor and a hint of sweetness. I'll give credit where it's due. Red cabbage: Bland. Like, "did someone forget to invite flavor to the party?" bland. The sausage: Also bland and oddly firm -- like it was training for a marathon or something. Sauerkaut: - wait for it... came with yellow peppers. Yellow peppers?! Who thought that was a good idea? Maybe to bulk up the portion? Definitely didn't add anything tasty -- just weird vibes. But the absolute worst part? The ordering process itself. A complete circus that made me question every single life choice I've ever made. Here's how it went down: We ordered drinks--explained clearly to the cashier what we wanted. Bloody Mary for one, and a Riefenstahler by Adam Puchta for the other. The order then magically gets sent to the bar in the back. So my girlfriend, thinking all was well, goes to the bar to grab her drink. The bartender asks, "Sweet or dry?" She says "sweet," assuming he already knows what she ordered. Spoiler alert: He did not. Instead of the Riefenstahler, he hands her a white wine that's definitely not it. When he approaches our table later, I politely inform him, "That's not Riefenstahler." Cue the most ridiculous look you've ever seen -- like he just solved a Rubik's cube for the first time. He argues, "She said sweet." I remind him, "I told the cashier she wanted Riefenstahler." He doubles down, "She said sweet." I say, "Yes, and Riefenstahler is sweet -- it's been sweet for 20 years. Know your product. Don't argue with customers." Honestly, it was like 2/3 of a cup of wine -- no biggie to fix. But instead, we got attitude and stubbornness over a glass of wine. So yeah, if you're craving anything close to good sausage, look elsewhere. Or at least prepare yourself for a sausage that's more "wors" than wurst -- and an ordering process that's a whole different kind of disaster. I understand we are in covid times. I understand everywhere is short staffed. Entering this - there's a sign on the door saying they're understaffed and please be kind. There is no sign saying no outside beverages. However - it's a self serve place. You order at the counter...there's no soda fountain so you get bottle items. I drink water. I had bottled water in the car and I don't want to pay $2 per bottle of water when I have it available. We ordered. I ran out to the car to get my bottle of water for two people. Food was fantastic. It was hot. It was fresh. It was just what I had my mouth watering for with my...luke warm car bottled water. Food was delivered and we were snapped at that "we sell beverages here and to buy from them." Customers came in after us with bottled water and were not snapped at.....It's hot out. Idk what the big deal is when it's a tiny walking town.....and..you're bound to have water. Whatever. I got the brisket sandwich with chips and a pickle. Had a breakfast buffet and considering it was a buffet style serving, it was actually pretty good and tasty. The hickory smoked bacon was very good as were the breakfast potato casserole and the sausage gravy. 4 stars on the buffet. I also took the sausage making class this past spring. We were taking the road less traveled this weekend, and ended up in Herman, MO, near lunch time. The downtown area has changed wwuite a bit since my last visit. Using Yelp, we chose a place only to find it closed. Looping around the block the hickory smoke led us here. This was the better choice! I had the award winning brat and my wife had a turkey sandwich. Now I'm going to be looking for excuses to go back to Herman. They have a large meat market and gift store here along with the dining room. This is the place I wish we had found whe we visited Germany a couple of months ago. I imagine tHis place would be packed during October fest. The serve locally produced spirits here and the Pinckney Bend gin is one of my favorites. They have gin and tonics on tap here!! It's a great deal for breakfast, but it just wasn't good... The place is sooooo smokey inside. Normally this might be endearing, but not first thing in the morning. They had pancakes, eggs, bacon, sausage and some potatoes, but the flavors were just missing. We all had to add our own spices. Despite the food being mediocre, we had a nice morning and the weather was great on the patio. Unfortunately, none of us felt super great after eating the food, leading us to believe that our stomachs were upset by it. Not a place for breakfast. $16 for a "all you can eat breakfast" with very limited options. Biscuits & gravy, the biscuits were doughy and falling apart. Scrambled eggs? Not sure if you could even call them eggs, they were gray looking. The bacon could have been cooked better, I love their bacon and buy it at our local grocer, it crisps up so nice, but not here. I could have made the bacon better than what they offered today. They had a pastry like donut, turned out it was cinnamon fried cream cheese- yeah not a pastry in my experience.
