Overall we had a positive experience at timber pizza! We were greeted right away and the staff were super nice. It was a busy night but totally fun atmosphere. We brought our baby and everyone was very sweet. For two people we got the small salad and two pizzas. Everything was yummy but the pizzas were a bit expensive for what they were. The little c salad was super tasty and inventive compared to a normal Cesar. I quite enjoyed everything I tried

We had a great weekend lunch here. The staff was friendly, and my daughter had fun watching the pizzas be prepared and put in the oven while we waited for our meal. I definitely preferred the pizza over the empanadas; I'm used to more of a flaky crust on the empanadas. That said, the pizzas were all hits. The pepperoni is very classic and gets perfectly crispy while cooked. The Penelope is a flavorful smoky/ meaty combo on top of the pesto. We got the Martha due to a kitchen mix up, and it was a happy accident for us. The pizza has a great mix of flavors and textures.

Picked up a couple of to-go pizzas here and re-warmed using their instructions. The Bentley was our favorite. The little peppers bring a little spice and the crust is delicious. I loved the crunchy kale on the green machine and it was really tasty with a little crushed red pepper. I was able to easily find parking and was in and out with my order super quickly. Looks like a great spot to eat in at. The oven is well ventilated and the interior isn't Smokey. The outside patio looks great too! We are excited to try some more pies from Timber.

This was one of my favorite meals that we had while visiting family in North Carolina! The pizza was so delicious, but my favorite part of the meal was actually the salad! My husband and I shared The Little C (TLC) Salad, which was listed as a serving for 1-2 people. It was a Romaine/Tuscan Kale Blend, had Tajin Bread Crumbs, amazing Peruvian Peppers that I was obsessed with , Parmesan, and Miso Caesar Dressing. It was the perfect size to share and we paired it with the Pretty in Pepperoni Pizza. So good!!! We also really liked the relaxed service style of this restaurant. You walked up to a counter to order and they brought the food to you, but they also brought us a pitcher of water and cups. It was amazing service and amazing food. It's on our list to visit when we come back next May!

We had read good things about this new pizza place near downtown and the old Durham Bulls stadium. Their original location has won some awards, apparently. Stopped in early on a Friday evening and it was slowly filling up. You order at the counter and your food is brought to your table or the bar, if that's where you're sitting. The atmosphere is very casual and the staff is super friendly -- stopping by several times to ask if we needed anything. We shared an OMG salad and a Big Green Monster pizza and I'd say those were perfect portions for two diners to share. They had Olympic hockey on when we were there for anyone who was interested. We've also seen their patio full when the weather is nice. We're on their email list now and they promise new offerings every once in a while, so we'll probably be back again.

I came here with a bunch of friends and Timber had just recently opened. I like the way it looks inside as it's cozy and bright. They have alcohol such as wine and beer. I like that the menu tells you what's in the pizza, including the meat. So I ordered the bambino because it had beef meatballs and almost no pizza place uses beef meatballs. I really enjoyed the chew of the dough and the flavors. However, even with a spicy sauce on it, it wasn't spicy, so I needed to add pepper flakes. The flakes are on the table along with Parm cheese in a shaker. When I added the pepper, the pizza was better to me. The bathroom was cleaned when I went in. They had the relevant sports game on the TV when we came in. The staff pushed tables together to accommodate our group and that was nice. We got one number flag for our table and that is better than everyone having their own. Everyone enjoyed their pizza and time there. I had leftovers and put them in a regular takeout box, but it would be nice to have half pizza boxes in the future maybe for taking your leftovers.

Great interior/seating space, friendly staff that checked on us multiple times, and creative pizza combinations! The crust is chewy and light which reminded me of the pizza crust I had in Italy. Price for 12 inch pizza was $22. The pizza had high quality ingredients. Depending on how full you like to be after eating a pizza this might be on the pricier side for dinner as it may not be enough food since it is a lighter dough.

I had a pleasant experience at the new location ahead of their opening. The pizza may take a while but it's worth it because it's delicious and you can tell they use fresh ingredients. The squash empanada could have had a bit more seasoning but my friend's pork empanadas looked delicious. The in house made lemonade and ice cream were both really good. Each pizza comes as a 12" pie and prices vary. Service was quick and staff was super friendly. You can tell they enjoy their jobs. They also have a bar inside. Small space inside but they can put you on a wait list.

Service and ambience were great, but the food was mixed. We got the Bambino pizza and Little C salad. The Bambino was good - the sausage was nicely flavored and fragrant, the crust was crispy but not burnt, and each component was fresh. But still a little bit more flavor would have helped it pack a bit more punch, and the size was quite small for the price. The salad was not my favorite - the dressing was basically just straight up mayo despite claiming to be "miso mayo" and had very little flavor. The peppers in the salad were plentiful but did not really go with the flavorless/underdressed lettuce, and it's not typical to consume so many of those pepper seeds in a single dish, which gave me a lot of discomfort for days after.

    The Bambino

This was our first time in and we got The Bambino pizza. It was quite literally amazing! The vibe was chill and the staff was friendly. Our pizza was brought out super fast and they have a selection of local beers on tap. We'll be back!

Great beer and pizza at this place!

Came here after the Durham Farmers Market with a friend and wow this place was a surprise. …read more I went with the grain bowl and honestly it is one of the best I have had in downtown Durham. It is built on quinoa and rice with black beans and kale, then layered with corn salsa, tomato cortido, guacamole, and a creamy acevichado style sauce that pulls everything together. It is finished with a crunchy mix of pepitas, nuts, and grains. The balance is quite ideal in my view. My friend had the rotisserie chicken with two sides, kale and slaw, and it was just as impressive. Crispy skin, juicy inside, and really clean flavors. Simple food done right and GF friendly. Everything felt thoughtfully prepared. Prices land right where you would expect for the quality, roughly 16 to 21 dollars depending on what you order, and it feels worth it. My bowl plus side of dark chicken was plenty. A few notes. Parking is what you would expect for downtown, so plan accordingly. Service was solid and friendly, but nothing that stood out. The vibe inside is festive and relaxed, bright and open, and just a fun place to hang out for lunch. Porbably not a special occasion. I also suspect it could get loud when full. This is definitely going into my regular rotation. That grain bowl is going to be hard to pass up next time, so instead of replacing it I will probably just add a side or an empanada and start working my way through the rest of the menu.

I love the customers and checking in to make sure that everyone was satisfied with their meals. I ordered a sweet corn Arepa as well as the pork & cheese Pupusa. They were quite excellent to my taste buds, although I had never experienced having them before. They even provided me with a nice selection of spicy condiments that I thoroughly enjoyed as well...heyyy, what can I say...I'm a spicy kind of fellow, ya know. We never made it anywhere else lol! I'm so excited to write this review!! We chose it because when I reviewed the Yelp reviews they were stellar. But mostly I was super intrigued by the sweet potato cheesecake empanada and y'all it was everything I hoped it would be. It's small, you can maybe get 4 or 5 bites. The filling is sweet but not overpowering, good balance. The crust, crunchy and delicious. Came with a side of whipped cream. Drizzled in caramel sauce. I had the restraint to save it for last. We opted to split the shrimp sandwich and house made chips because we weren't too hungry and wanted to save room for the empanadas. Perfect plan. The sandwich can be ordered with a garlic, jerk or buffalo sauce. We were given a sample of the jerk to determine spicyness. Super spicy (which I loved) but my friend doesn't so we went with buffalo which wasn't spicy at all. The shrimp were a nice size, coated and seasoned well. The restaurant itself is small with about five tables but there is an abundance of outdoor seating shared with other businesses. We knew we planned to relax and catch up so we opted to eat outside. Despite the 90 degree weather, the entire area was shaded with a little wind so perfect. We got a number and our food and drinks were served to us. (Peach passion froze----yum!) Now. Boricua Soul is a great example of why I love seeking out and patroning local restaurants. The founders, Serena and Tori Fredericks, were both present, Serena managing the front, Tori managing the kitchen and both in and out of the restaurant serving people outside as well as inside. They were all over! Very welcoming. We were there for four hours and Serena's smile never left her face. She personally checked on us throughout. It felt like hanging out at your family's for the day. When we came in just a few people there, no line. Serena was at the register. I told her I came from Charlotte and she graciously gave us samples of the mac and cheese and collard greens as she described the menu. Both by the way, amazing! I don't think I've ever been able to find delicious perfectly seasoned greens with no meat. Before we knew it the line was to the door. By then I had the chance to experience her love for what she does and her heart for the community. Clean restaurant, beautiful and personable decor. Clean gender neutral private bathrooms. I took pics of the article on the wall about them, well worth the read. You too will drive miles to experience this Caribbean and Southern inspired restaurant! Im coming back and bringing people. There's so much more for me to try.

I love how they had a lot of drink options, including fountain drinks, and special lemonades. We got here on the late side for lunch, and found there to be several different options for ordering. You could wait in line and order with a cashier, you could do a self service kiosk, or you could order from a QR code at a table. We ended up grabbing a table and opting to do it with a QR code. Everything was very clear, and I like that they showed what was popular immediately. I opted for a Boricua Soul Bowl, which I'd sampled during a food tour a few years back- then I tried it with chicken, so today I opted for shrimp. I feel like you really should go with pork since that's the default, and a mainstay of Puerto Rican cuisine and soul food, but alas I have an aversion to pork so I can't. I was also intrigued by the jackfruit option- there's something for everyone! My husband went for a platter with pork, which he said was delicious and rich. The Mac and cheese was amazing, and the collards were to DIE FOR! They have four house made sauces, which were a very fun way to add different flavors (I doused mine in Guava!). Since I've now been, I understand that there are many different methods of ordering, but I'm not sure I understand if there's a benefit or staff preference to one over another. I think one thing I might do in the future is order online (if you're using Toast Tab anyway, might as well order in advance) and then sit outside after I arrive. It took about 30 minutes to get our food, which probably means everything is made to order and fresh (as opposed to sitting around) so that's great, but I was STARVING by the time we got our food. Will definitely be back!

I went to Makus in New Hope Commons, Durham in a Tuesday afternoon, and when I entered its lackluster ambiance with cheap-looking uncomfortable high chairs, I was surprised that there's not a single employee in the front. I saw about 2 of them in the back, seemingly preparing the empanadas. I was ready to order but no one was there to accept my order. I almost left Makus until I saw the bell on the concession with a notice saying, "NEED HELP? RING ME PLEASE!" I rang the bell once, no one came; I rang twice, finally, an employee! I ordered 2 beef empanadas & 1 ham & cheese empanada for a total of almost $13. There was only 1 customer before me, waiting for her order when I went. While I was waiting, the employee who was smoking earlier outside came in and just ignored me as he returned back to work in the back. At around 15 min. mark of waiting, an employee went to the front, holding a plastic with a small takeout box inside. I stood up and asked if my order was ready, the woman just nodded without saying a word, just cold and expressionless. Finally, after about 20 minutes of waiting just for 3 empanadas, the same woman handed me the plastic with my order. I thought they were busy preparing empanadas in the back. Why'd it take so long just to get 3 empanadas ready? Out of all the empanadas my girl & I have tried: Filipino-style, Ilocos-style & El Salvadorian style in the Sabor restaurant nearby, the empanadas in Makus are the smallest. Each empanada cost about $4 (a dozen for $47 - seriously, who would buy a dozen of these?). I'd be fine with this size if the empanadas are gourmet quality with astonishing fillings and flavors, but the taste was alright - nothing special, and definitely not worth $4 in our book. The good part was that the empanadas were not doughy, so the texture was fine. The sauce that came with it was alright, and the 1 small cup is just fine for 3 tiny empanadas. When I came home to eat the 3 empanadas with my girl, she asked me why I returned to Makus after we were disappointed in our first visit a few years ago. I said that I wanted to give it another chance. Now, I deeply regret this decision. | Overall Score: 1.2/5

Even with them not being just around the corner from me, they arrive fairly warm and withstand the trip well. One of the draws for me in getting Makus Empanadas are they appear to be baked and not fried (don't get me wrong, I like fried empanadas as well!) and honestly they remind me of mini-versions of my grandmother's homemade fruit turnovers in appearance (a good thing). I usually order these light pockets of tasty goodness with their chicken filling or their sweet corn filling version. I find both pretty good, they hit the spot with chicken giving flavorful and needed protein with not being overly spicy while the sweet corn version being a delicious but not so heavy choice. They even identify which are each variety by initials baked in at the edge of the crust, pretty cool and no guessing. I am a fan and I will continue to keep this location of Makus Empanadas in my delivery meal rotation.
