Our table had the following: 6 oysters Rockefeller, 1 fried calamari, a half size blackened halibut Cesar salad, a grilled ribeye steak and an Alaskan halibut fish and chips. Food notes: the oysters were super fresh and delicious, perfectly cooked so that they were only broiled on top and still almost rare below. However the toppings could've been improved with better bacon, and maybe a touch more spinach. Even a small dollop of Béarnaise sauce would've been better than the Parmesan. Nevertheless this was probably my favorite bite of the night. The halibut on the fish & chips was also fresh flaky and really tender. The chips were like thin steak fries that had been battered but were still under seasoned. They weren't great, and no one ate them even our toddler who loves fries. The blackened halibut on the salad was tougher, and dry. There were too many store-bought croutons and the salad dressing was possibly store-bought too and bland for a Cesar. The ribeye was totally sad. It was quite thin and unimpressive especially for the cost. It came with more of those dismal fries and some plain broccolini. Our steak-loving dinner companion only ate about half and didn't care to doggy-bag the rest so it went to waste. Calamari was average, and came with two oily amateur-chef looking sauces, one mayo flavored and one somewhat spicer was basically the same as the first. Our excellent waiter mixed up a cocktail sauce himself that blew the other sauces out of the water. Bravo to him. He was the best while waiting on us also, quick to refill a water or retrieve more drinks from the bar. Good thing the Rockefeller was great, I'd be back for that alone ($6/per oyster) but otherwise I don't think I'd rush back to Fletcher's. Many other eateries in the area that are tastier, with equally difficult parking.

We stick out like a sore thumb. I kinda expect to be treated differently, (especially in the sticks) but we weren't, here :) Tug's buffet breakfast was better than any hotel buffet breaky, that's for sure! They had french toast sticks, blueberry pancakes, different protein options, biscuits and gravy etc. No soda on tap, only cans. No strips or chicken nuggets here. I kinda figured and we planned to stop elsewhere for my son's eats (ARFID eater). Apparently, there are people who make reservations JUST for the overboard bloody's, so arriving at 11am (they opened at 10am), still had us a waiting a good 30-40min for ours. It was worth it! Tug Bar changes the toppings each week. This week was insane! Candy + an entire chicken, pork chop, lobster tail, sandwich, pretzel etc. see the photo and vid. It's small, dark, and a little sketchy, with writing covering nearly every wall and a tiny stage where local bands play -- some decent, some not so much. The drinks are very reasonably priced, and the service is friendly and quick, which goes a long way here. You'll find regulars who clearly know each other, and the atmosphere is exactly what you'd expect from a true neighborhood watering hole. If you're looking for something polished or upscale, this isn't it. But if you want a no-frills local spot in Anchorage with cheap drinks, good service, and a ton of character, Van's Dive Bar is absolutely your place.

If you don't park in the front, you might wonder, like I did, whether the side of the building is an okay place to park. Then you'll wonder if you should park sideways, angles, or straight on. By then you'll be to the back of the place and down a short hill and trying to figure out where to park or where to turn around. You may even decide to just leave. But don't. Vans is a cozy spot. Due to the hum of the ice machine, and the friendly conversations, you'll not be able to hear any of the street noise so close to the entrance. Five beers on tap, and probably 30-40 cans and bottles in the cooler. Plenty of liquor, though they didn't have any scotch I would want to drink. Maybe four bottles? As advertised, a dive bar. Both in look and smell (which wasn't bad, per se). There was a blue grass group starting to jam a little after I got there. The patron next to me said they were part entertainment, part jam session. Which sounded pretty darn cool to me. Basically everyone in the place was there to hang and/or play. I was asked if I was a musician. Not since high school. When I played it was the answer to the trivia question.
