For food, our starters set a high bar; the pork buns, pickles, and octopus were all flavorful and well prepared. The ramen itself was delicious and hits the spot in the Alaska weather, with deep, tasty broths and bold flavors throughout. The Dark Horse was especially good. We started with the Scotch Tamago and Whisky Pork Buns. The buns were soft and pillowy with crisped pulled pork, pickled cucumber, and candied chili. The pork had a firmer, almost pork-sung-like texture, and the sweet, tangy, and spicy flavors were a great combo. I also really liked the scotch tamago. The center was jammy and custardy, with a crisp exterior. For ramen, we had the Dark Horse. The broth was deep and rich with a little heat, and the noodles had a nice springy texture. It was a bit salty for me, but still very flavorful. The standout was definitely the Miso Baked Alaska. I mean, when in Alaska, you kind of have to get baked alaska at least once. This one was worth it. The toasted fluffy meringue, cold sweet cream ice cream, soft kinako cake, and salty-sweet miso caramel made for a really good mix of textures and flavors. Easily the best thing we had on the trip. Service was great. The atmosphere was lively and fun, though definitely pretty loud.

The bar has a smallish stage and dance floor for live music events. There's a cover charge, so that keeps the rif-raf that abound in the neighborhood out. The crowd was mostly goofy but well behaved college kids. Drinks were okay, snacks were okay, the bar was clean enough. Although I REALLY wanted to complain (because did I mention how horrible and ashamed the Travel Inn should be of itself? It's a scourge to humanity!) but I really couldn't. I'd go back if the right band was playing. We happened in on a women's empowerment fundraiser thingie, so it was mostly angry lesbians singing badly. But it was a novel experience and we enjoyed ourselves well enough. I'm going to have to revisit this place to see how it stacks up over time. Check it out. Post a review. It's relatively clean, staff is pretty friendly, and the drinks are reasonably priced. They've had some pretty interesting shows there, and a good crowd usually turns out. While it is in an area of town frequented by some pretty shady characters, the people I've encountered in the bar have mostly been regular non-shady Anchorage folks.

They also have a cute outdoor patio area. They have jukebox karaoke weekly. Beer is allowed in the bowling alley now, so watch out for servers behind you, running those orders out. Would love to see live music in this space. Usually the music is better in the bowling alley.

I'll admit, when I first started reading the menu, I was a little concerned I wasn't going to find something I'd like. Some of the combinations were definitely outside of what I would normally order. Then I spotted the Elf on the Shelf pizza. We asked our amazing waiter what he thought about it, and when he told us it was one of his favorites, we decided to commit and give it a try. Let me just say... MIND. BLOWN. This pizza was easily a 10/10 for me. The combination of flavors worked together so perfectly, and it ended up being one of my favorite meals from our entire Alaska trip. My only complaint? I'm back home in Arizona and we have nothing like it here! But I guess that just gives me another reason to come back to Alaska. It also happened to be Monday, and the lunch special slice that day was the Call of the Wild, which was exactly the one I wanted to try. The Call of the Wild had reindeer sausage, steak, bacon, mushrooms, red peppers, cheese, and garlic cream sauce. The reindeer sausage was what sold me on it. If I'm eating pizza in Alaska, I might as well get the one with reindeer on it. It was savory, meaty, and very good. We also got a small Brewhouse Favorite with chorizo, sun-dried tomatoes, onions, cheese, and Denali sauce. The spicy chorizo and tangy tomatoes were a great combo. The thin crust was excellent. Chewy with a nice crisp edge, and sturdy enough to hold all the toppings without getting soggy. Lots of seating, plenty of parking, and a fun atmosphere.
