What an amazing gem of a business that's been an Austin staple for years! It's a simple location near some other treasures and the service and sandwiches are simply to die for. If you need a hand, they will recommend the specials or simply point you to a favorite of theirs that may align with your craving! The ambience is definitely that of a deli style restaurant. Though the tables were a little sticky from the many moments of serving others, the store was clean and appealing to hang out in. Thundercloud Subs is not a bad place to go to for a sandwich. They have options for everyone. Every once in a while I will go by and get a sub for lunch. I usually get an small egg salad sandwich on wheat. Over all not bad. It is close by where I work. So nice walk to and from. Service is not bad. I did have a mix up one time where I ordered egg salad and got chicken salad. Did not think much of it until I got back to my desk and realized. Oh well. Prices are reasonable. This was our first time trying ThunderCloud Subs. The inside is cute with a small dining room, a few tables, and plenty of free parking outside--always a win. Service was super friendly, even though they did forget one pretty major ingredient. We ordered two Austin Clubs to go, didn't watch them being made, and only realized once we got home that both were missing the avocado... which is kind of the whole point of the Austin Club. We were ready to dock them harder star-wise, but they do have an automated text that follows up on your order. On that review we gave a sad face and we let them know what happened, which prompted them into refunding the entire order. Major points for that! Missing avocado aside, the sandwiches were still tasty--solid size for $9 and the chicken had a great smoky flavor. A little hiccup, but the customer service more than made up for it. Having read the other reviews for this Thundercloud Subs location, I was hesitant to go here. It's conveniently located near my work though, I wanted an inexpensive sandwich, and I've enjoyed the other Thunderclouds I've been to before, so I decided to risk it anyway. I was pleasantly surprised. I was immediately greeted by one of the 5-7 guys working behind the counter. He was nice and helpful as he put together my sandwich and the cashier came over from the register to let me know my total and brought my change back to me; I never had to leave my spot in front of the counter. The dining area was bright and clean (I actually prefer it over the location on 34th and Guadalupe) and my sandwich was delicious. I'll definitely be back for quick, work-day lunches. read more

I've been going to ThunderCloud for years. There are so many places to find a darn good sandwich in Austin. What sets this place (903 W. 12th St.) apart is Tiara. Bless her heart. She wears kindness on her sleeve. She literally made my day. She's the single reason for the 5 star rating. Once you know you have a good product, it's good customer service that keeps people coming back. Hopefully the owner is aware and appreciates her work ethics. First and last time to this particular location. I'm a Thundercloud and hometown business fan but this location has terrible parking and pretty dismal service. It was my first experience ordering online and I'm convinced that since you are not watching them make the sandwich, they give you the smallest portion ever. I ordered 4 sandwiches, each sandwich was light as a feather as they didn't carry the standard portion of meat/toppings. I also asked for extra tomatoes and got 1 slice of tomato. No more visits here and no more ordering online. Super convenient in theory but not so much in real life. read more

Just had lunch at the Thundercloud on 12th Street. We have been going here for years. This lunch experience was very disappointing. My meatball sandwich was lacking in meatballs and marinara sauce. Why would you put 2 meatballs on a small sandwich and only 3 meatballs on a large sandwich? There is an entire 2 inches of bread with nothing in it. When I confronted staff about it, they said that's how they were told to make them and then proceeded to charge me for an additional meatball. And if that wasn't enough, the meatballs were VERY dry, with just a "dusting" of marinara sauce. YOU ARE MAKING THESE SANDWICHES WRONG! Austin's original sandwich chain has been around for years. They continue to follow the same formula with consistent results. It's standard sandwich fare here. Not to ruin the secret, but Thundersauce = oil, vinegar, salt, and pepper. I should say that their veggie faux-chicken sandwiches are pretty tasty for you herbivores out there. That said, there's nothing spectacular on the menu. Service is king at this and every other Thundercloud I've been to. They may be hipsters, but they're not snobs. In fact, I always feel like I'm part of the family when I drop by the 12th Street location, but maybe I'm a good tipper. They move the line pretty quick, so I've never waited for more than 3 or 4 minutes to get served. Thundercloud is a good, inexpensive lunch that makes for a quick trip. read more

So I live next to the java house and I've been going to this thunder cloud for so many years every one used to be awesome and cool vibes till new people started to work there that were so blunt rude and disrespectful. I usually get a large nada chicken and add avocado well the girl forgot to put the avocado in my sandwich and instead gives me the smaller ice cream scoop of avocado ever I was like seriously I have a large sandwich and I'm paying nearly 2$ for avocado which is extra . So I asked for another scoop and the guy at the register said "well it's going to be another 1.89$" I said that's fine I'm willing to pay because there's usually more then one scoop of avocado, then he said "well we go by portions sorry" and another thundercloud worker helping someone else asked what size sandwich I said large she said yeah she get more then just one scoop , "1 scoop is for a small". I went ahead and paid 11$ for a sandwich with no mayo, cheese ships or a drink.. but two scoops of avocado . The guy LITERALLY threw the bills and change including my receipt on the counter so rudely it was sad, two other people noticed and just couldn't believe it . I will not ever go to this thunder cloud again . I will go to the one on lake Austin instead. read more

Whoa! I just read the other reviews for this location and I'm a little taken aback. And then I started actually thinking about it. The staff are kinda lackluster compared to the other locations. There's one chick that'll usually joke with me. I caught her yelling/singing a song the last time I was there and we had a laugh. But everyone else is kinda lumpy... But the sammich is still badass! The location is great; right around the corner from one of my clients. So I swing in all the time. When I was going to ACC, I ate here twice a week. I went in today excited to try the salami sandwich, which they're offering at the original 1975 price. Of course, this kind of promotion is going to attract a shitload of customers. I was helped by Mr. Douchebag, the average height blond guy, with a mustache that is not at all ironic, but just sadly says that "I'm trying too hard." I'm not expecting him to go all out and be super-friendly, but a basic, "Hi, what can I get for you." would have been nice. He also didn't ask what kind of cheese I wanted; just made the decision for me.... which is fine, since I like American, but what if I didn't? And that's besides the point - every other sandwich person was asking their customers what they wanted... and looking like they at least tried to enjoy their job. Mr. Douchebag could barely muster a smile or even be bothered to offer any semblance of basic customer service. Just stopped in here to get a quick sandwich and was greeted by blank stares from two of the guys working the counter. I couldn't quickly locate the Office Special on the menu and haven't been there in a while, so inquired as to whether they still had it, as the only thing I saw was Egg Salad. This question unleashed a tirade from my sandwich artist about how no one can ever find anything on the menu and he doesn't understand why Thundercloud can't just put everything on one large menu, I guess so idiots like me can find it easier. Me: Wow, you got a lot of feelings about that. Him: ongoing blank stare. Me: alrighty then, so about that sandwich.... Apparently making sandwiches takes him to his happy place---or perhaps my sandwich toppings pleased him?---as he was a bit nicer after he got that off of his chest, but then I was passed on to Guy with Shitty Attitude #2, for checkout. The receipt machine ran out of paper just in time for my order (lucky me), which led to a loaded conversation between these two gems about which paper needed to be used--yellow was the answer--- but which was quickly abandoned for an even better opportunity for dickishness when they caught sight of a poor kid outside skateboarding in the rain. They promptly dubbed him an idiot for his poor transportation choices and proceeded to ignore me to follow his progress up the steep street, I'm sure with the hopes that he would fall, eat it and prove them right. Gem #2 managed to tear himself away from berating poor college kids long enough to slap my receipt down on the counter and bark 'sign it' so I could finally get the eff out of there. Honestly the worst service experience I've ever had a TC. At least my sandwich was good? Turns out the Office Special is still a thing and it's good with added avocado. I wasn't sure what to get, but the guy helping me was super friendly. He made great convo and he was very helpful when I wasn't sure what to get (again, this was my first time here). I was really surprised at how much sandwich I got for less than $7. I didn't get a drink or chips, just a large sandwich. It came out to $6.48, I believe. Awesomeness! I come here every Monday & Wednesday for lunch after class. Staff is relatively friendly and polite. Food is really good. It's never terribly busy when I come in (between 1:30 and 2 usually) and there's plenty of seating. The person who makes the sandwich usually asks about my day, which is always nice, even if they're only looking for a tip. Definitely recommend this location. read more

So, I'm totally good with businesses closing for Christmas, and for that matter, even Christmas eve, as long as they notify their customers in some way. But when Joe 'Manager' decides he wants to go home an hour early on the night before Christmas eve, with no sign or notification, then that's the domain of negligent business practices, and of course the big loser is 'me', the customer. I've always been a fan of Thunderclouds, and it seemed like they used to hire managers who were at least responsible enough to understand that someone trying to get a bite to eat on Dec 23rd in the evening will have limited choices. So if the ones that are scheduled to be open just close up to go catch a party...well, I don't write reviews, but this was hugely inconvenient and I hope others will consider NOT going here! read more

Just picked up sandwiches and my god I have never had a worse experience at Thundercloud. We normally go to the burnet location, but we were in the area and we definitely will never be coming back to this location. Not sure what is up the staffs ass but we never got a proper greeting, just a rude employee putting on his gloves while he stared blankly at us. The girl at the register rung up our order and apparently asked if we wanted chips and a drink (which I didn't hear because speaking up must be prohibited at this location) and she told us the total and handed us two drink cups- I apologized and told her I didn't want chips and a drink. THIS GIRL snatched the cups and rolls her eyes so far back in her head and sighed. Jesus Christ, I didn't realize ringing up sandwiches was such a hard job.
