It was so good I actually ended up having 3 of them. We originally planned on entrees but ended up just ordering all kinds of apps and got full off of those. It was really satisfying and we had fun trying all the different things they had. I don't think there was anything we didn't like. We got oysters, beef carpaccio, whipped ricotta, and beef tips. Towards the end of our meal the DJ started setting up and the restaurant was rearranging the furniture to make room. We were told our booth was sold but were welcome to continue in another booth until anything changes. The atmosphere transitioned really smoothly and we enjoyed ourselves. Then asked to see cigar lounge that I've been in a hundred times before at big rock and was told no it's private and you'll have to book appt with manager. Food is fine but it's so sad you can get same steak and superior service at a chain bham steakhouse (any of the many) than good old big rock which now just apparently blows. Even if it was a one off bad experience, the fact they have a leather bound menu with a $19 jack daniels 2oz or 17$ Jameson 2oz pour next to $4000 bottles of wine is just bush league. Clearly whoever bought the place or is managing partner knew how to do the redevelopment extremely well (truly well done even though no staircase to cig vending machine) and then they threw the baby out with the bath water running a complete shitshow high end steakhouse smothered by others that have equally good food and immensely better service. Great job on the redesign. Just a brutal experience. I really mean that. Fleming and Hyde Parker better service and prices and same food. Everywhere else in bham and Troy, but those two especially are consistently good with service and respect their guests. The cigar lounge will be public in short time as if your blowing $150 a person on dinner it shouldn't be an ordeal to simply see what it looks like now after the remodel.

The poached eggs were done perfectly and the spiced stewed tomatoes with a hard cheese wedge were delicious. Instead of crust bread, the dish arrived with a half piece of grilled pita. With all the liquid a bit more bread would have been a plus. The Prosecco was served in a wine glass. It tasted sweet and pretty flat unfortunately. Wouldn't likely order alcohol again here. The spices and freshness of the Shakshuka would however bring me back next time, with a cup of coffee.

I would definitely recommend Elie's if you're in the area and looking for a solid bar/restaurant with Lebanese and Mediterranean cuisine. Elie's offers both indoor and outdoor seating and they also host private parties and offer catering. It is clearly a neighborhood favorite and has been around for decades.

When we looked at the bill we were charged for every refill, aka $3+$3. IF you're charging me for a refill PLEASE bring me a fresh glass AND a heads-up that I'm actually purchasing another beverage. Service was basically nonexistent. We had to ask a busser for anything we needed. Ellie's - you really need to pay attention. There is a lot of competition in Birmingham.

I used to live nearby about 25 years ago and remember coming to a diner in this area for breakfast back then. Fast forward to today--this isn't the same place, but wow, it's absolutely amazing. Right away I loved the vibe. The chalkboards with handwritten menu items and daily specials on the walls give the place so much character and charm. It feels welcoming, classic, and cool all at the same time. The customer service was excellent from start to finish--friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. I ordered the country breakfast, which came with biscuits and gravy, eggs, toast, potatoes, and sausage--everything was spot on. I'm usually not a big hash browns person, so I really appreciated that they offer an alternative to the shredded style. I went with the cubed breakfast potatoes (not sure what they officially call them), and they were so much better--crispy, flavorful, and cooked perfectly. Between the food, the service, and the overall atmosphere, this place completely won me over. I already know I'll be back next weekend.
