Came here recently with some family and friends for brunch and we left stuffed. We booked way in advance and got seated right by the glass door where we could watch the Cider tours. Our party ordered the cheese, meat plates and the sourdough french toast for appetizers. We cheese was so fresh and they had a great selection of meats. The french toast is a much order if you want something sweet. As for the pizzas, we ordered the hash, roasted apple, zucchini, margherita, and pepperoni. We all fought for the hash and the apple. They have a nice combination of savory pizzas. The flights provided a nice addition to meal. I'd definitely get the Experimental and down the bourbon barrel. Overall, we really enjoyed our meal here. Service was great and the ingredients in all of the dishes were so fresh. The cheese here is just on another level. Highly recommend this spot for brunch and large groups. read more

We went here within about a month of them opening. I am a big fan of Wigle and I have been anticipating this for about a year. I ordered the tasting flight of 3 ciders. The ciders were decent but not great. The best one was the farmhouse cider. For food, we ordered the butcher board. The butcher block was tasty but a bit on the light side for the price. The pizzas looked good. We will definitely be going back given that we love Wigle and like supporting the local distilleries and breweries. Parking was really easy since they have a parking lot. This new and upcoming Pittsburgh place is a great addition to Troy Hill. Brought to you by the same people who make Wigle in the burgh, this is their dabble in ciders. While most of the ciders left me underwhelmed (Good, but average) and the menu lacked a bit of variety, their homemade pizza paired with cider was another story. I highly recommend the roasted apple pizza. It was amazing. They also have gluten free and vegan options, as well. They also make homemade crackers using product from the cider and they are SO GOOD. Every Saturday, there are family tours and regular tours. They really strive to be a place kids WANT to go with their parents, and a place parents want to be. The tour is interesting and gives some history behind their product. All in all, I look forward to going back and enjoying more munchies paired with a drink. Wigle is definitely a movement beyond Pittsburgh, PA. Threadbare cider and meadery is a great addition to the Wigle family. The cocktails were pleasantly sweet and as I was here for an event this place was packed with people but I didn't feel trapped. I enjoyed the Capri Sun cocktail that was half Capri Sun and half rum. Also their brunch menu is all types of amazing. Some highlights were how well the service is here. The employees are effective, polite, and well versed in the menu items. I went with a classic cheese pizza and it was not your basic pizza and Threadbare does nothing basic. Threadbare is different than your typical restaurant! You are connected to the Cider Mill and can see the manufacturing process in action. GO WITH FRIENDS or people who can eat an entire pizza. It's also better with more people because you can try a variety of pizzas. There were four of us and three of us went home with leftovers. I ordered the sweet potato pizza but didn't love it (I think it was just my taste preference.) My friend had the three little pigs and I kept taking slices from hers. You also have an option to make your own and they have unique ingredients that ended up being really yummy together. We also had the classic cider that was enough for two of us to share. This was our first time trying Threadbare and we had a good time! The place is nice and cozy. They have cider, beer, and whiskey. They have a small selection of food. We ordered a Margarita Pizza and it was thin and tasty. My friends ordered the flights and did not enjoy the ciders than were included in the flights. You cannot pick your flight options because it comes pre selected. I ordered the rose cider which was delicious! I also needed up trying one of their mixed whiskey drinks which was refreshing and delicious! Recommended for sure! Our waitress was nice but a little forgetful at times. They have a tv by the bar area which wasn't turned on at all. We enjoyed it here but would recommend adding a few more TVs to add entertainment. When we were in Pittsburgh over the holidays, I did a lot of research trying to find a kid-friendly spot to meet up with friends and family. I finally decided on Threadbare Cider House and it did not disappoint! My cousins were so impressed and asked me how I found out about this place. The giant lite bright was a hit, but there was also an entire area of blocks, toys, and puzzles to keep all the kids entertained. We were one of the first groups there when they opened in the evening, but by the time we were leaving, the place was packed with families. The atmosphere was exactly what I was looking for. I've known about Threadbare Cider House for a while now but it was honestly never really at the top of my list of places to try. We just so happened to pass it on our way to Pear and the Pickle so we decided to stop in on our way home. I was pleasantly surprised at how cute of a place it was. Fairly large open space with a few round tables and then some longer tables. It was a chillier day so no one was really sitting outside but it looked like it had a decent outdoor space for the summer time. I would definitely love to go back next summer with some friends. I ended up doing 3 of the 3oz pours so I could try a few different ciders. Most of the ciders I tried were a little too sweet for my liking. I think I would have preferred more of the dry ciders. My husband and I love stopping by here, definitely the best cidery in the Pittsburgh area. They gave a vast variety of ciders from fruity and sweet to dry and crisp. The pizzas are really good but do have traditional marinara sauce, they use olive oil, which keeps them light. The antipasto salad was a great value, a lot of delicious food for $6 and more than enough for two people. They featured a fun, Halloween candy paired flight for the holiday which strangely worked well-they know what they're doing! What an incredible place! I had the pleasure of organizing and attending a field trip for preschool friends of mine. The staff contact was attentive and very accommodating to our group. In fact, she helped one mom carry her stroller up the stairs! Threadbare itself is a neat space. It sort of sneaks up on you because there isn't a lot around. But there is a large and well marked parking lot. You enter up a large flight of stairs into the tasting room. It is beautifully decorated and well laid out. On one end is a bar, one end bench seating, one corner a kids corner and the rest of the space a retail area. I was seriously impressed there was a kids area because a lot of places aren't kid friendly. They had magma tiles, a giant peg board and more to keep the kids (or maybe sometimes adults with short attention spans) occupied. We started our tour with a glass of apple cider and some basic information. Then we made our way through the facility. There were various stops along the way with very engaging stories and activities for the kids. Favorites for our group were sorting the apple seeds and seeing the balloon expand from the yeast. It was wonderful to have a lot of information about Johnny Appleseed and just connection to local history, but also learn about the cider making process and how things work at Threadbare. Our tour guide was so incredibly engaging and patient with the kids that I would absolutely recommend a tour here to anyone with kids. The tour concluded with yummy freshly baked oatmeal cookies (which are on their regular menu- if you eat at the restaurant definitely order some). The kids corner came in handy because adults were able to try samples in order to decide what cider to buy while the kids were fairly occupied. I'll definitely be back here for dinner with the family and will likely take another tour in the future. We're visiting from Seattle and I wish I could take this place home with me. Sure, we have good cider and good pizza and even places with good kid play areas back home, but Threadbare takes all three of these things and smashes them together into perfection. My 1.5-year-old could not get enough of the light peg board, and it was easy to sit within visual range but still have adult socialization. The cider was delicious, the pizza was delightful, and the cheese board was out of this world. The kid meal included (non-alcoholic) apple cider and my kid was There For It. The only thing I'd change? Please add a changing table in the men's room. I saw one in the women's, but men change diapers too, and my husband didn't see one when he took our kiddo. My girlfriend and I stumbled upon this place one Saturday afternoon. We have been back a few times since. Each time, we've tried something new and continually been impressed. The menu is slightly limited with only pizza, but the shared plates can be a meal in themselves when you've had a cider or two. Delicious!! We tried a the flights of ciders and pizza. I was very very pleased! We had a little trouble getting acknowledged when we walked in. We stood there for 5+ minutes and a worker never tried to help us. Two seats opened up at the bar so we sat there. We were very pleased with our choice. The bartenders were very friendly and easily carried on a conversation. They were very attentive to us. The vibe of the room was very chill. I really liked the decor. This is a cider house that is fitted for people with palettes for quirky, dryer ciders. We had two flights of ciders with no overlap (total of 8 drinks) and unfortunately were not huge fans of anything. This is because I like really sweet drinks overall. I will say though, the service is amazing. Christy was great! Super sweet, well-informed, and noticeably proud to be a part of Threadbare Cider house. I did a cider tour here last week and absolutely loved it. The tour was about an hour long and filled with a ton of cider samples and lots of history on the Pittsburgh area. If the tour was great, then the cider and food were outstanding. Easily some of the best cider I've ever had! After our tour, we stayed for pizza and some cocktails, and I really enjoyed everything and so did my friends. I'd definitely swing by Threadbare for some food and do the tour. I am a big fan of hard cider. I have been drinking it for many, many, many years, and am also a big fan of Johnny Appleseed. I love reading (and listening) to Michael Pollan's book/audiobook, "The Botany of Desire," especially the chapter on John Chapman, and I even visited the Johnny Appleseed historical site in Ohio. I also purchased some of Wigle's "Walkabout" whiskey, in the past which is flavored with apples, and features the old threadbarren guy himself on the label. Unfortunately, I did not love the cider here at Threadbare. I prefer sweet and aromatic ciders (skrumpy), not dry and fancy apple champagne (My favorite commercial brand being J.K.'s Farmhouse Ciders from Michigan). Even the "Farmhouse Cider" here was not very sweet, but it was my favorite of the four. Second favorite was the hopped cider, but it didn't compare well to my favorite commercially made hopped cider, Wyndridge "Crafty Hopped Cider," which is really hoppy and delicious, not dry. I didn't care for the pear cider either. I would rather have a Magner's Pear (from Ireland) or a "Grizzly Pear (Pears not Bears)" from Blake's Hard Cider Co., also out of Michigan. Now onto the food . . . we attended the "Owl Cafe" special event, which was advertised as having lunch with an owl . . . well, the owl had a private room, so we didn't actually lunch with her, but we did get to see her after we ate (She was a Great Horned Owl, and her name was Martha). My wife and I split two polenta "pizzas" (she is gluten free). I had the "Threadbare Hash," and she ordered the "Roasted Apple," and we told our server we were going to split them. While the "pizzas" were cooking, my wife and I decided to get up and play with the two life-sized Lite-Brites that they had up against the wall (something we were really looking forward to playing with, as we are children at heart and love toys and games). Little did we know, until we started trying to use it, is that the design was pre-made, and you were not able to make your own designs because of the way it was crafted, the big pegs do not fit in the small holes, so there really is no creativity nor imagination involved here, you must follow the pattern. I really don't know why someone would go to all the trouble to make a life-sized Lite-Brite, and then make it practically unusable . . . this was the biggest disappointment of the day (sad face with big pouty lips). Our polenta "pizzas" arrived, served on a wooden pizza paddle, and it was nice to see that they were cut into slices and were already mixed and matched for us, but they were unevenly distributed, so my wife actually ended up with more hash, and I more apple, so we had to move some pieces around in the end (great concept however). The food was tasty, but the polenta was much too salty. Also, I would've liked to see salt & pepper on the table, as I thought mine could use a little more pepper (and perhaps grated cheese). I could taste the herbs really well however, especially the sage, so other than the saltiness, I enjoyed the flavor palette of both "pizzas", and the egg that was served on the side was perfectly cooked. Next time I come back, I want to try one of the regular pizzas, as the people eating them next to us, said they were really good, and they looked delicious. After lunch, we traveled down the ramp to a back room where we got to see the owl, and talk with some good folks from the Humane Animal Rescue league, and that was great. They had some hands-on activities, and we were also able to make a cash donation to the cause. Afterwards, we were expecting to take a tour of the production facility, but alas, no tours were being offered today (another disappointment for me). So overall, my first visit here was a bit of a let-down in some areas, but I have to say the service was excellent, and the facility was beautifully designed and decorated. I plan to come back again sometime in the future, and give them another chance, so I am rating them an "A-O.K." for now, and will hope for the better on my next visit (and hopefully the next time I come, there will be tours offered, as well as a sweeter cider). You NEED to go to Threadbare! I fell in love from the minute I pulled into the parking lot. The whole outside is riddled with subtle charm, but when you step inside you are truly overwhelmed with how immediately comfortable you feel. It is so beautifully renovated. They mastered the balance between embracing the character of the past and modernizing for the future. They went to great lengths to preserve the original building and you can tell. Meredith and the whole staff are such awesome individuals. They are truly doing business right and know what it means to go above and beyond for their customers. Another really cool tidbit is that they've really set things up to be kid friendly so that parents can still go to a fun place for themselves but their kids also enjoy it. The ciders are seriously special. They don't rely on sweetness but instead embrace the natural sugars as a subtle addition. They have three currently out for tasting and two to buy by the bottle. The Dry is a great champagne-like cider that's crisp and refreshing. The Farmhouse Cider is the "sweet" option, but it isn't sweet at all. It is light, airy and fresh tasting - something you could drink for the long haul. The Sour is SO awesome though! It is tart and tasty - definitely my favorite (They plan on having this bottled by Christmas). They also have a pear cider in the works which sounds like it will be fantastic! Since they also own Wigle Whiskey, they serve some delicious cocktails! Food-wise I've only tried the pizza, but it is truly yummy. The crust is perfectly cooked and I love the creative toppings and pairings, which go really well with all the ciders. The vegan options are also great, laden with cashew mozzarella and plenty of veggies. They also have gluten free pizza which is served on polenta. It is SO good. I absolutely love it. It stands out against the pizza and takes on a life of its own. Along side all of these great pizza options they have scrumptious cheese and meet plates and pickled veggies. The whole menu, brunch, dinner, etc. just looks so good. I would bet everything is awesome with such a great and thoughtful chef at the helm. I cannot wait to go back, again, and again. read more

My friend and I recently visited for a great brunch! We split the pickle platter and each got the breakfast hash pizza and pancakes. The platter is delicious and highly recommended for pickle fans! It had an assortment of pickled cucumber, pepper, beets, carrots, and eggs. Perfect for sharing and super refreshing for the hot summer days. The pizza was larger than expected but tasty! Lots of toppings and flavor without being too heavy. The pancakes were very well done; fluffy buttermilk pancakes with butter, whipped cream, and rhubarb jam (classic!). The pancakes were also a perfect serving size for one person. We tried two ciders - the Smoky/scotch one (I've forgotten the name) and the rosé cider. My first impression upon walking inside the restaurant was how cool the details are. It is obvious they put a lot of thought and love into designing the space. Threadbare Cider is brought to you by the makers of Wigle Whiskey and is much less than a mile down the road from their space in Spring Garden. They consider Cider to be Pennsylvania's Wine, which is a fair label, that I will continue to use. The owner's wanted to bring the history of Johnny Appleseed back to the area and became very well versed in his history in relation to the region. It is very obvious that the owner's and employees are very passionate about their product. Most of the seating is tables with benches, but the benches are deep enough to be comfortable. I was able to try their 3 current ciders - dry, farmhouse and a tart. I really liked them all, but the dry was my favorite. It was so smooth, and I'm certain I could drink an entire bottle by myself without even thinking about it. As for the food - I was able to taste some of the pizza's and they were all delicious. Their gluten free "crust" is a polenta crust. I thought it was good, but you needed a fork to eat it because it was thick and wobbly. It just didn't feel like pizza to me. They also have a vegan pizza option, with vegan cheese, which was good. One of the fun parts about the place was that they wanted to be accessible to families. They have a giant lite brite on one wall and even do a kid-friendly tour with activities specially designed for little hands. I think this is wonderful. First time at Threadbare the other day, what an awesome spot! Tons of outdoor seating adjacent to the parking lot out back. Up the stairs and inside you'll find the dining area. So nice inside, big open concept, with their production facility on the back side of the building. Tons of tables and a long bar area for seating. It was seat yourself so we grabbed a spot at the bar and were instantly greeted by the lovely bar tenders. We had read awesome things about their pizza, which, aside from their cider, was the main reason we came in. First things first their cider is incredible! Started with a flight of the first four, their most popular, which included their house cider, dry cider, hoppy cider, and sour one. All four were pretty amazing in their own right. Very unique, great flavor, high ABV. Loved them all. My boyfriend got their take on a Bloody Mary, which is their house made mix with one of their ciders. It was different, just okay. Their menu does change weekly as they source as many ingredients possibly locally. For the pizza we both went with the sourdough crust, my boyfriend did the classic pepperoni and I built my own. For $15 you can choose to build your own and have unlimited topping. Its soo so awesome to see the vegan offerings they have: house-made cashew cheese and a vegan pesto sauce. I went with the pesto sauce, cashew cheese and mushrooms on the sourdough crust. Flavor was SO good and very fresh. The dough was just a little crispy. Same with the pepperoni pie. Not sure if that's how they will always be but mine was definitely more crust like than pizza. I'll be back to try some more food and definitely more of their drinks. We started off with the "Beast" Platter and the "Curd" platter aka a glorious meat & cheese platter! Soooo good! Then we got a flight of ciders, followed by 4 more cocktails. I'll start by saying I know I didn't do this place justice because I didn't try any of the cider. However I did have the roasted apple pizza, which likely would have paired well with a great cider. The crust is thin but not too thin, quite delicious. The pizzas are each fired up fresh and the ingredients taste very "direct from the farm", by that I mean, it's a pizza that you can almost eat without any sense of regret not greasy and very fresh. The staff is very pleasant and the ambience is great. This place is a little bit off of the beaten path and not the easiest to find but parking is a breeze since there is a decent size lot. I am not sure I would be back as someone who is not a cider lover, personally, but the options, low key ambience and freshness might be a health conscious cider lovers dream. read more

We attended the special Fresh Perspective Happy Hour event Friday night 5:30-7:30. We brought guests from Chicago. Finding Threadbare can be challenging if you're not from Pittsburgh or aren't using a GPS, but once you come upon it you'll be glad to see that it has a rather large parking lot. You walk up a big wooden staircase to enter the building. The space inside is nice & open and we were immediately given instructions for our event, which included a cider, beer or cocktail and free "appetizers" which we were pleased to find out was actually every pizza on their menu & their cheese & charcuterie trays. All the pizzas were tasty with nice thin crust, I think we tried everything. The Farmhouse & Dry Hopped Ciders were our faves. I would go back and give it a try again.. has potential to be 4 stats from a review. Only 3 since it was very hot inside, no AC was running. The service was very slow, I mean, very slow for the food AND drinks. The waitresses/ bar tender poured our group of 4, 2 incorrect drinks. And the place was super family friendly... was ok since we did have a 1 year old, but when you have families that have children running around/ playing with the games/ crying... it becomes more of a restaurant than a cider house. I've lived in Spring Garden for the last seven years and was optimistic about this place when it opened around the corner from my house. Definitely a fan of cider and restaurants that offer good veg options. Stopped in with my wife 4 or 5 times and have never been disappointed with their pizza. It really is super quality and delicious and they offer vegan versions which is also cool. I've tried most of their ciders and have liked a couple of them. Unfortunately this is where the positive points end. This place as well as their mother ship wigle whiskey have spearheaded the gentrification of this neighborhood. Threadbare offers a cocktail named after Spring Garden that most people from this neighborhood couldn't afford. All of their food and beverages pretty much price the locals out of being able to enjoy an establishment in their home turf. Additionally the first thing you notice when you walk into this joint is how shockingly brightly it's lit. Even in the evening when you may be looking for a more laid back and relaxing ambiance it feels like the setting of a daytime tv talk show. My experience with servers has been hit or miss. They definitely seem more concerned with catering to the suburban yuppies who drive into the city for their big night out. The kinds of people who are like "the north side?...I don't know...is that safe?" And their friend's like "don't worry...they've gentrified it now!" So anyways the reason I'm finally writing a review- went in with my wife at 8:40 pm on a Friday night. This place is supposedly open till 10:00 pm. Around nine the place started emptying out and all of the threadbare employees converged upon the dining area wiping down tables and clanking about. They kept staring at us and making clear they wanted us to hit the road. And it wasn't supposed to close for another hour. Cool place. They have a great beer selection for those of us who don't care for cider. Wish they would do more with their whiskeys for cocktails. Most of the cocktails had their cider as a base but I suppose it's a cider house ;-) We got the cheese board and split the apple pizza. Cheeses were spectacular and the pizza was one of the better pizzas I've had in Pittsburgh. Will absolutely go back! read more
