I did not have any chicken in mine so I might of miss read that it came with chicken. I probably assumed. But it was good. We also got the turkey wrap and that was a wrap. Just stopped into the Thistle Cafe for the first time. I thought it was fantastic. Great bright atmosphere with some classic rock playing and a nicely decorated sitting area. Honestly there's nothing I don't like about this place. The food is great, it tastes like someone spent time on it, like I'm in someone's kitchen getting homemade lunch. The specials are a fantastic price that include a sandwich and side. And they do most anything gluten free! Plus of course Herman's uber friendly customer service just tops it off. Thistle is a hidden gem in Chase tower. They serve breakfast and lunch in the form of tacos, sandwiches, wraps, enchiladas, etc. You can tell they really take pride in serving good food to their customers, and I receive excellent, fast, attentive service every time I go in (which is often, given I work in the building). For breakfast, their omelettes are AWESOME and only $4 or $5 for a lot of food. For lunch, their specials are reasonably priced (about $8) and my favorite are their enchiladas. If you're looking for a quick bite at good prices, highly recommend checking this place out. read more

During a recent visit to Austin, we had the good fortune to find this excellent cafe for breakfast. The menu selection was great, our pancakes, bacon, & omelette were delicious. Miller greeted us and was excellent with follow up. While we were eating, several customers who were apparently "regulars" came in and were greeted by name. I don't normally leave poor reviews, but... gluten-free seems to be a joke there. They have 3 times messed up now, and this last time they told me it was a gluten-free bun when, instead, it was a bagel. I ate it, because I was starving, and then halfway through realized I was eating poison. So now I'm cramping, grumpy, and irritated. This is the 3rd time they've messed up. They got my lunch right once out of 4. It takes me 3 days to 2 weeks for my digestive system to go back to functioning after wheat has been introduced, so this is a pretty serious (and sad) setback. They SHOULD be good, they just... aren't. read more

I find myself going in there for breakfast 3-4 times a week because of their omelettes. My favorite is cheese and lots of vegetables is fantastic, one of the best I've ever had ... the chef knows what he's doing. Paleo doesn't get any better. This is my favorite breakfast spot downtown. read more

Tried the Thistle Cafe for the first time today and was surprised by how fresh the meal was for the price. I got the cajun fish wrap and a side of tortilla soup and a soda all for only $6.50...in downtown Austin that's practically unheard of! And the meal was delicious. Not your typcial tortilla soup but it was good and the fish was fresh tasting with a nice spicy grilled flavor. Definitely coming back to try more on the menu! read more

3 stars for the side that came w/ my lunch item, and a fraction of a star for the lunch item I ordered. I ordered the Tuesday special: Chipotle Lime Tacos (chicken) + side. Upon opening the container with my side - the house salad - I was very impressed save for one thing. Typically, the side salad is a lazy afterthought, and I am almost always disappointed. This salad, however, looked fresh, consisting of: spring mix, sliced black olives, a bit of feta, some shredded carrots, and some fresh red onions. The one disappointment was the huge slice of rotten tomato on top. When I tried to pick up the slice of mush covering my otherwise beautiful salad, it fell apart under its own weight. I then had the pleasure of removing SEVERAL pieces of rotten tomato mush from the top of my salad. The dressing I chose was roasted red pepper. For some reason, there was some other dressing tub inside the salad container, which I promptly removed. The remaining salad ingredients did turn out to be just as fresh as they'd initially looked, but the dressing tasted dirty. As in, it tasted like dirt. I bit down on something that turned out to be a red pepper seed, which is probably what added to the bitter, dirty taste of the dressing. I've roasted my own red peppers, and we've all seen them in jars or cans, on pizza, on hummus . . . The seeds are always removed, and probably because they don't taste so great. (Without the giant rotten tomato slice and the dirt dressing, this salad was a 5.) The lunch item I ordered was the daily special (words that I will fear at every establishment from now on): Chipotle Lime Tacos (chicken). Upon opening THIS container, I was greeted with 2 obviously room-temperature flour tortillas, onto which approximately 10 shreds of yellow "cheese", pieces of heavily-processed chicken, some of the spring mix (which had now wilted under the heat of the chicken), cooked red onion, and . . . MORE GIANT ROTTEN TOMATO SLICES. Who the fuck puts a slice of beefsteak tomato 6" in diamater on an anything taco, let alone then manually pulls it apart to "spread" over the top of the taco? I guess they were too lazy to use a knife and cutting board? I don't f*cking know. At least I didn't have to deal with the nauseating sensation of the giant, rotten, heavy tomato slice falling apart under its own weight this time, I only had to extract each piece of mush from the tacos. After this bs, I thought I should inspect the chicken, which was looking rather suspect. It turned out to be actual chicken, though at first glance, I thought it was that Subway "chicken" crap that is like a sponge patty, imprinted w/ "grill" marks, sliced and served. This stuff was so heavily-processed that it might as well have been the thing I just described. I separated some fat or whatever that stuff is that holds some of the pieces together, took a deep breath, and took a bite. NO chipotle flavor, NO lime flavor, NO flavor at all. I took a bite of one of the shreds of cheese; I am not convinced this is a dairy product. The icky texture of the deliberately non-heated tortillas was, of course, disappointing. Additionally, only when I was mostly done tolerating bite after bite of something that belongs in a high school for kids no one gave a shit about at the time, did I realize that there wasn't even any dressing/sauce/topping on the tacos! Add DRYNESS to the list of blegh coming from each bite. I will not be back. Thistle Cafe deliberately failed at opportunity after opportunity to remedy things that anyone with eyes could see as unservable. read more

Was recommended and very disapointed. Staff was rude. Sandwich was soggy even it was just made. Had the tomato and pesto sandwich with tortilla soup. Sandwich has no flavor, cheese was not melted, and outside of sandwich was soaked in old tasting grease. The tortilla soup had one piece of very dry chicken in it. My daughter ordered the ruben and it was also a very soggy greasy sandwich. After paying for 2 sandwiches and soups we left after a couple of bites. Very sad is also that they serve all of their food in styro foam containers even if you eat there. Definitely not an Austin attitude and will not get my business again. read more

Thistle is a-freakin-amazing. I seriously have not had one bad meal here, and for as often as I go, that's pretty good!!! It is no secret I am obsessed with their green salsa, and I recommend putting it on every single thing. You could even drizzle it on your stapler, and it'd make it pretty delicious. Herman, who is the owner, is also extremely nice and is always in a great mood...which definitely helps those of us who are grumpy Monday mornings.....or every morning for that matter! read more

I hate to leave a two-star review because most of the staff and the owner are VERY nice, but unfortunately it appears that most of the time they are tripping over each other. This results in slow order fulfillment and not getting what you ordered (imho). I have been going to Thistle for years now because it's convenient (I work in the building), not because of the "value" of a meal. As others have stated, depending on what you get, you will pay as much if not more than the surrounding restaurants, and for frankly not as good of quality. A prime example - I order the same sandwich almost every time, and it's funny (but not!!) that when I return to my office there is ALWAYS something incorrect about it...it's just a matter of what will be wrong that day. Today, even after having my order read back to me by the nice lady behind the register, my sandwich was not toasted, nor were there black olives on it. On one hand, there wasn't anything on it that I DIDN'T order, just missing things I did! That's a win in some ways. It's certainly not the worst place I've been, but I wanted to take the time to let people know to at least check your orders BEFORE you leave (I should heed my own advice!), and it's going to take a bit to fill the order most times. In fairness, I have returned items in the past and they were very apologetic and corrected the situation. The problem is I don't typically have the time to go back to the basement and deal with it, so I just slog through the food I didn't order knowing I could have spent the same amount elsewhere and be eating what I wanted. I know you keep trying, Thistle...but there are severe breakdowns in the workflows. read more
