We visited this restaurant as a group of about 6. We ordered on a short notice close to closing. Online, I wasn't very impressed and when I picked up our food, I thought it was a quaint place. I didn't think a ton of it. The man who processed our order and got it out was extremely nice and had everything ready!! He even took the time to double check the order for me. Picking up for a large group can be hectic. Needless to say, he changed my mind. He seemed as if he had been doing this for a long time and he paired soup and sandwiches very well. Things that concerned me, no one had on gloves. They chopped meat in their bare hands, I watched them palm meat and drop it on plated food. Luckily my salad had no meat. Eeekkkk!!! Then...there was the manager, supervisor, or owner....whoever he was, he was rude....So, as I am discussing the order for 6 that I am picking up (that was $84.00 total) he interrupted to say the 4 people in the restaurant needed the server's attention. WOW....ok, so if I wasn't starving, I would walk out. Then after standing there, with no offer of a courtesy beverage for the wait (oh and my uber time was ticking away). Needless to say, he ruined the experience. I, then got my order about 7 minutes later to double check. No napkins, cutlery, or any condiments were in the bag, glad I checked....Food was fresh otherwise. Nothing great about my salad, just salad. Try somewhere else if you're pressed for time. The five stars is for the convenience and service. My coworker loves a certain soda they didn't carry, and now they get a few a week just for her--so you know customer service is their strong suit! For a basement-level office building cafe, it really is a solid option. My favorite thing on the menu is the tomatillo chicken enchiladas. The rest of the offerings are soups, sandwiches, and various small plates. Where they really shine are their breakfast tacos! If you ever find yourself in the Chase building area during your morning commute, do yourself a favor and snag a Barnyard. It's located underground between Colorado and Lavaca on 6th St., so it might be a little hard to find if you're not familiar with the area. The service that you receive here is second to none! I order my food through Yelp and when I got there to pick it up they hadn't received my order. I wasn't in a hurry so waiting a bit didn't bother me at all. None the less the manager put my order in front of others so my wait wouldn't have to be too long. He profusely apologized and gave me a fresh warm cookie. The other gentleman, Mike, at the counter offered to add to my veggie burger free cheese and avocado for the inconvenience. Hidden treasure in downtown Austin. Where should I begin? First off it is EXTREMELY clean! That is a huge, huge plus in my book. The food is flavorful and they season their meat entrees which also a big plus with me. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. Their menu has a variety to select from. I struggle with how to rate this place. #1 It's convenient. I work in the Chase building. #2 They have awesome blueberry muffins, and the cranberry jalapeño dressing is one of the best I've ever had on a salad. #3 The quality of the chicken on a salad is good. But it's extremely overpriced. The deals are barely deals, and $10 for a wrap and some chips is just outrageous. I feel like they're overpricing in order to make up for the high rent. I'd love to be able to come down here, get a cup of coffee and eat a muffin on a regular basis, but I'd be spending $7 for the honor. I can't justify that on a regular basis. The atmosphere is also extremely lacking. It's a basement suite in a large office building, so I'll forgive it quite a bit, but it just feels like a little cafeteria. There's no charm, the music is too loud and it feels cramped. It's also about 60 degrees in there, which literally makes you shiver. The staff is extremely good and generous, however. They're one of the best reasons to come down here to eat. They'll give you a little extra dressing, some extra cheese, etc... for no charge, and they're overall just very kind. Everyone in my office swears by them, and their food is ok, but the reason the 3 stars is their service. Out of the three times I have gone there, I have had two very poor experiences. The last time I went to Thistle in November, I preordered 3 breakfast tacos online, in order to run in, pick them up, and run out. (We had a remote coworker visiting Austin, and I wanted to get her breakfast tacos!) I work a block away, and I waited longer than the online ordering system told me to, in order to make sure my food was ready. But it wasn't, and 40 minutes after my order was placed, it still wasn't ready. Again this was for 3 breakfast tacos. Plus every person who ordered after me all got their food and left and it wasn't busy during this time. But what makes me rate Thistle 3 stars is one of their associates. When I talked to him about the eta for my order, he said they would be starting it soon. As in 40 minutes after it was placed, and 30 minutes after it was estimated to be ready, they still have not even started it. So at that point, I asked him to cancel my order, and to get a refund. The associate was beyond rude to me starting from that point. He went so far as to lie, and to tell me that he was the manager, and that he did everything he could possibly do for me because he was willing to give me the refund I asked for, and laughed in my face. Another customer came in as we were speaking, and as he was talking to me, he proceeded to take the other customer's order and take their payment, which was uncomfortable for me and the other customer. However unbeknownst to me, one of the cooks in their open kitchen called their owner to explain the situation, because he could see I was not happy with how the other associate was talking to me. The owner called me a few hours after this situation to apologize to me, and to tell me that the associate was NOT the manager, and that he pulled up my original transaction and refund transaction for time stamps, and that there was no way my order should have taken that long for what I ordered. The owner then offered to leave me a gift card at their counter for my next visit. I have yet to go back to pick up said gift card, but I appreciated the gesture. If it wasn't for the cook who called the owner, and the owner who then called me to apologize for the situation, I would rate Thistle 1 star. But I added 1 star for the cook, and 1 star for the owner. read more

I had their breakfast taco and coffee during break time once. It was nothing out of the ordinare. Its just another overpriced, cafeteria type service. I gave the 2 stars for the ambiance it portrayed. Decor is decent. My taco is as basic as it can get with little flavor other than the hot suace which was questionable. My boyfriend and I discovered this hidden gem while visiting Austin for the weekend. The owner, Herman is SO personable and frequently checked-in to ensure our meal was exceptional and to strike up friendly conversation. Also, the breakfast tacos are 100% out of this world and took me to "flavortown" (sorry Guy Fieri, I had to go there). Found this place about a year ago on a whim when I started working downtown and needed a late lunch, and mostly because the name sounded familiar (there was another location in Westlake that closed a few years ago). It's a small, quiet cafe down the easy-to-miss (if it weren't for the signboard) outdoor stairs next to Chase Bank at 6th & Colorado. It's nicely decorated and has outdoor seating - out of the wind tunnels between the downtown buildings. There are lunch specials every day and new items added all the time. The standard menu items are fairly simple but some advanced with a unique Austin-twist. Prices seem reasonable, especially for the ridiculousness of being in downtown. You'll wait a few minutes longer, but also watch them making your food right behind the counter. The last time I went (once again, late lunch) I had the opportunity to meet and chat with Herman, the owner. He told me about his restaurant experience in Austin and the history behind the current business - Thistle was originally located elsewhere, plus the location in Westlake that he decided to close, until finding it's home in downtown Austin several years ago. I believe there was also a name change at some point from "Thistle While You Work" to "Thistle Cafe." Thistle is a great little spot in downtown but where it feels like you're not. read more

Super disappointed with thistLe today, i came in and been coming here for the past year because of co workers liked it however the food here isn't anything special its really mediocre like many of downtown food. Ever since the past 3 months i feel they changed management - they didnt provide the same wow factor customer service as the old owners which made us come back.. last time i came they forgot my coffee however they made it up by givinG me coOkies which is cool i felt, but today not only they forgot my soup i went up there to tell them im still missing a soup and it seem liked she was going to fix it up then i thinnk the manager got caughht doing other things to where i had to go back up aNd ask AGAIN for the soup.. won't be returning here for mediocre food and bad service read more
