Ray’s Soul Food and Turkey Legs - Mac n Cheese Turkey Leg

Ray’s Soul Food and Turkey Legs

(75 reviews)

Walking into this soul food restaurant felt like stepping straight into someone's warm, bustling…read moreSouthern kitchen--where comfort is a promise and flavor is a guarantee. The aroma alone was enough to make my stomach applaud: rich Cajun spices, buttery fried goodness, and that unmistakable scent of smoked turkey drifting through the dining room. From the moment I sat down, the service was like a welcoming hug. Our waitress greeted us with a genuine smile, the kind that says she truly cares whether you leave happy. Before I could even look at the menu twice, a frosty glass of sweet tea landed in front of me--perfectly balanced, smooth, and refreshing. Not that electric, syrupy stuff--this was the real deal, brewed strong and sweet enough to make you close your eyes with the first sip. Then the food arrived, and the experience turned unforgettable. The star: a massive turkey leg cooked so tender the meat didn't just fall off the bone--it practically floated off. It was smothered in a spicy Cajun pasta that brought authentic Louisiana heat without overpowering the flavor. Every forkful had this satisfying mix of smokiness from the turkey and creamy spice from the sauce. It was decadent and bold, a dish built to impress. The sides were no afterthought: * Fried Okra: golden and crisp with the perfect crunch-to-tender ratio. Each bite tasted like it had been fried with care, not rushed or greasy--lightly seasoned and completely addictive. * Potato Salad: creamy, cool, a touch tangy--seasoned like someone's grandma supervised the ingredients. It balanced the spice of the pasta perfectly and offered that essential comfort-food harmony. It's rare to find a place that nails every detail--the seasoning, the textures, the hospitality, the speed. Yet here, everything was executed like they were feeding family. There was passion in every plate and warmth in every interaction. If you're searching for a meal that hits your heart before it hits your stomach, this is the spot. It's the kind of soul food that reminds you why food is a love language--and this restaurant speaks it fluently. A surprising standout? The restrooms. Spotless--truly spotless--and decorated like a boutique hotel lobby. Gleaming white marble, elegant hints of gold trim, soft lighting... the kind of space where you catch yourself saying, "Okay fancy!" It's clear they care about every inch of the guest experience, even the ones most places overlook. This restaurant doesn't just serve food--it serves joy, comfort, and that deep Southern hospitality that makes you slow down and savor life a little more. It's soul food done with pride. A place you can't wait to return to before you've even left the parking lot.

This was my first time going to this restaurant and I've been wanting to try for about a year now…read more When I arrived the food smell good and the place looked clean and the staff was very friendly. We looked over the menu and we ended up ordering fried catfish, fried Green tomatoes, and fried pork chops. I also got a side order of mac and cheese and mashed potatoes and gravy and fried okra. The fried green tomatoes came out and I felt like they were overcooked very mushy inside. The outer banner was very crunchy and cooked well the inside didn't really have much taste. The menu said they would serve it with a ranch dressing but it ended up being some other type of reddish sweet and sour type creamy dressing. It was ok. The pork chops we're dry and the meat tasted old. I think they need to change their meat supplier. The mashed potatoes taste it like I had a ton of garlic powder. In my opinion a restaurant should never use garlic powder but instead use fresh garlic in their dishes. It's really easy just to throw cloves of garlic in the potatoes as you're boiling them. Or roast them. I was burping up garlic for several hours after I left. You can often judge a soul food restaurant by their mac and cheese. The mac and cheese was baked but the cheese sauce tasted like nacho cheese sauce. Or some type of ready-made cheese sauce. And they just mixed up the cheese sauce with some elbow pasta, threw some American cheese on top and threw it in the oven. It was not the worst mac and cheese I ever had but it was definitely not good. The restaurant was very clean and I like their decor. Ray came out talking to customers and checking on their satisfaction. He was nice and I didn't have the heart to give him bad news. But I really believe unless they fix their recipes and show more imagination that they're not going to make it. Lighten up on the salt. The food was too salty. I wanted to try their sweet potato pie but after me and disappointed by all the other dishes I changed my mind. I probably won't be going back. 65 bucks for dinner for two.

Lots of great favorites including meatloaf, hamburger steak, wings, fried chicken gizzards and livers, homemade desserts, including cobblers and banana pudding, etc, etc, with all the homemade sides and vegetables that you can imagine. And then there are the "throwed rolls." Hot with butter, honey, gravy, sorghum molasses, and more. Great service and down home country ambiance to spare. Don't go expecting fancy, but I guarantee you won't leave hungry.

The staff were friendly as usual and our server was really good and the place is clean as usual! The salmon patties were really good, I'd order them again. The food, overall, seems to be not well mixed with salt. My husband's chicken and dumplings had an inedible layer of just pure salt. He mixed everything up and it was better but the shock of a mouthful of salt lingered for the rest of the meal. The fried potatoes pass around had the same issue. This is still very much so a tourist destination and a once in a blue moon trip for us when we find ourselves in the area. The allure of the "throwed rolls" and pass arounds is enough to keep this place an option for us, especially since we're learning what not to order.
