I would be hesitant in going here 2 hours before closing in the future. We didn't get most of the pass arounds until we were done with our meal and ready to go. The staff were friendly as usual and our server was really good and the place is clean as usual! The salmon patties were really good, I'd order them again. The food, overall, seems to be not well mixed with salt. My husband's chicken and dumplings had an inedible layer of just pure salt. He mixed everything up and it was better but the shock of a mouthful of salt lingered for the rest of the meal. The fried potatoes pass around had the same issue. This is still very much so a tourist destination and a once in a blue moon trip for us when we find ourselves in the area. Stopped on a Sunday for early dinner on our way from Memphis to St Louis. Wait was about 1 hour but son really wanted to try this hyped up restaurant. Yes throwed rolls were fun, and pass around sides were good when we could get them -- only a few were circulating and the ones we really wanted didn't come out until we were packing up leftovers to take home. Special of the day 'chicken & stuffing' was 75% stuffing & gravy. I ordered it because nothing else on the regular menu sounded better for the prices listed. Steak was nothing special. Whenever my family travels through Missouri we have to stop at Lamberts. It is a lively restaurant with a down home, family feel. They are known for their throwed rolls because they literally throw them for you to catch. But if you aren't feeling adventerous, they will come by and hand one to you. You must bring your appetite when coming here. All of the portions are huge. I had salmon patties with green beans and beets as my side items. Everything was delicious. In addition to your entree, they come around with additional sides that they call "pass arounds". These include macaroni and tomatoes, fried potatoes and onions (my favorite), black eyed peas and fried okra. The menu has a lot of homestyle dishes like meatloaf, fried chicken, catfish, chicken and dumplings, pork chops, potpie just to name a few. Everytime I've come here I've never been disappointed. Just stopped here we stopped here every year going to come to Indiana. Our food was horrible so this was cold. Chicken was overcooked we sent it back and then I asked for a drink to go because we never write anything and they want to charge me $1.50. Lamberts Cafe is known as the home of "Throwed Rolls". Yes, they do have people with carts of yeasty rolls that will throw them to you. The service was good and the food excellent. Had the JLT (Hog Jowl Bacon in Texas toast with lettuce and tomato. If you are unfamiliar with it, it is thick cut from the jowls, has more fat than normal bacon but it is cooked crisp. It came with one side; I chose Turnip Greens which they served with hot pepper vinegar (Yes!) as they should. It was great. They also come around with free sides, all very good. Free sorghum honey and or apple butter, fried potatoes with onions, fried okra, and black eyed peas. Yes, servers would walk by and offer these sides so you should not leave hungry. It was a 2 1/2 drive to Lambert's Cafe. My family's been a few times and have always raved about it, so, we decided to take a family drive out. We were greeted by a nice young woman, right away and 9 of us were seated in less than 10 mins. Upon walking in, it is a plethora of cool decor -- from an old phone booth, an old car, old pictures, and hundreds license plates from all over the country. The gift shop is small but they have some cool items; t-shirts galore, candy, jarred pickles, etc. The restaurant itself is divided into two dining rooms with wooden booths. The decor all around is super cool to look at. Braxton greeted us right away and took our drink orders and I was surprised that they game in big old school jugs, pretty cool. We ordered pretty quickly and immediately started to be passed unlimited sides. The fried okra is awesome.. super fresh and crispy! A man signals from the front of the dining room, asking if anyone wants a roll & proceeds to throw it at whoever asks. The food was quickly served, hot and delicious! I ordered the chicken strips, mashed potatoes w/ gravy and green beans. Everything was great! Not salty at all, flavorful and fresh. I think the customer service here is exceptional! Our waiter and the waiters bringing sides around all had a sense of humor and jokes with us all. It was such a lighthearted experience! I did visit the bathroom and I'll be honest, it needs some work. Trash on the floor and overflowing.. not a good look. Hopefully it gets better for future patrons. Non advertised tip, during the summer months they open 10 instead of 10:30 like on doors. We met my Mother and oldest Nephew there from St. Louis. (This was 1/2 way for us both) We were greeted well and got seated promptly. Was just a lil under 1/2 full already by 10:30. Waiter was friendly and made a few recommendations from the Menu. We ordered drinks, and looked over the menu. It is pretty large filled with many options of good Southern fair. Finally ordered, mother opted for Meatloaf, Nephew burger, I chose the country fried steak, and my wife got chicken livers. The first couple of batches of Thrower rolls were hard, and a little over done. Eventually, they got better, and buttery. So what are the scores? Meatloaf was a 5 according to my mother. She loved it. Burger was a 4 according to my oldest nephew. He said it was pretty good. Country fried steak a 4, too much mashed taters on top, soaked up gravy and caused steak to be dry towards the end. Chicken livers a 5, have to just take her word on this one as I won't eat it. With pass arounds was around a 2 hour lunch, lots of stories and great times catching up. Was great seeing my family. Would definitely come back, I would not get the same thing again. Tilled well since never pressured for time, & we spent time catching up as I said. Bill with a generous tip for 4 was $135.00 so that's like $26 each + tax + tip. Food was not very good. Corn was so sweet couldn't eat it. Roast beef was unseasoned and chewy. Gravy was flavorless. Slaw tasted like sugar and cabbage. Rolls were kind of doughy. Iced Tea was sugar water. My daughter had chicken tenders and fries neither of which were good. Tenders were like they had been under a heat lamp for a while. After several visits to the Foley AL Lambert's, it's Missouri forebear presented itself directly in our route to Lollapalooza. We stopped for dinner. Right off the bat you're treated to the best of what Lambert's offers: the throwed rolls. Catch one (literally) and put your choice of apple butter or molasses (two unusual spreads) and you're good. Same for the "passarounds" brought to the table by roving staff. At our table, the fried okra was a universal hit. For this reviewer, the fried onions and potatoes--in a swankier joint, they might be called "Lyonnaise"--were delicious. Others at the table either didn't eat onions or rated them "fine". The macaroni and tomatoes did not excite anyone at the table, including the avowed pasta lover who had really been looking forward to them. Was it a false memory from Foley, or were they just not as good? To her they tasted overly sweet. On to the main courses: the Lollapaloozians ("Chappel Roan!") split a chicken pot pie, while the reviewer and wife ordered country fried steak and fried chicken, respectively. The pot pie was judged by all to be a little too salty, but the crust and consistency of the innards were spot on. The country fried steak (not a typical choice from this reviewer) had the right combination of crust and gravy, but too mildly seasoned for a Louisiana boy. A little pepper helped. The fried chicken was unpleasantly dry to the point of disappointment. Thoroughly cooked, but just too dry. Sides were fine: the greens and potato salad were proper in good Southern form (is Sikeston still "Southern"?). Cold Chunky Applesauce was exactly as one would expect. Mashed potatoes were bland, but there was plenty of gravy and sauces to mask it. Overall the food was OK, and we'd put it at around three stars. We concur with other reviewers who found some fare to be overly salty. Add an extra star or two for some of the specialties, particularly the rolls, okra and potatoes and onions. On to ambiance, and hoo boy: As with the Foley property, you will walk into festooned spaces that make Cracker Barrel seem minimalist. It's a sit-down-with-menu and server (very friendly, in our case) experience, but with roving servers, some carrying pots of passarounds and others pushing a cart of (almost goes without mention) hot rolls thrown, sometimes at great distance. I'd give this five stars as it's a unique restaurant experience. This ain't Applebee's. read more

I've wanted to eat at Lamberts for years. But always rushing up and down the interstate, I've never made the time. Today, we did and I'm glad. First, we did not know what to expect as far as the decor. It's pretty cool. They have lots of old advertisements, pictures, etc. and even a small game room. My personal favorite is the old advertisements. Yes, they really throw rolls clear across the restaurant. More importantly, the rolls are hot and fresh. And I love they come around with molasses and apple butter. Excellent. I had the barbecue pork steak. The steak was huge and flavored very well. It came with three sides and again they tasted great. The only room for improvement... The steak and the mashed potatoes could've been hotter. My wife had a veggie place. She liked everything on it. Especially the coleslaw and the carrots. The staff comes around with hot sliced potatoes that are flavored very well. They have Black Eyed Peas, ravioli and fresh okra all included, and all you can eat. It's pretty neat. I almost had to stop him from licking his plate! The Pro Tip is: DON'T FILL UP ON THE ROLLS! We spent about an hour here, enjoyed the atmosphere and filling comfort food, ate about half our meal, and took the rest home for later.
