We just happened to be passing by Sikeston, Missouri at suppertime on our way home from a trip up north. As is my custom, I searched Yelp to see what was good in town. We weren't in a pizza or a burger mood, and we didn't have time for Lambert's Café, so Jay's Krispy Fried Chicken piqued our interest. When we drove by, there were just a couple of cars in the parking lot, which is normally a red flag for me; but, there were several cars in the drive-through, which told me two things: 1) this was a place that the locals frequent often. And, 2) the chicken would be hot and fresh because of the long line in the drive-through. We came in and were immediately amazed at the reasonable prices on the menu board. The chicken was on display under heat lamps behind the counter and it looked fantastic and, as the name implies, crispy. The lady taking our order was very helpful and explained to us the sides and such. She highly recommended the gizzard plate, which I tried. My wife went with the chicken strip plate. To be totally honest, I was not all that impressed with the gizzards. They were not battered in the same batter as the fried chicken, as can be seen in the pictures that I took. They were not bad by any stretch of the imagination, just not quite up to expectations. My wife said the chicken strips were delicious. This is a place that I would frequent often if I lived in the Sikeston area as I am a fried chicken lover. The next time I will go with my favorite, which is the bone-in chicken. As we were sitting there eating our meal, the dining room began to fill up, and there were several cars in the drive-through as well. Good food, great prices, and a nice inviting dining atmosphere. Oh let me tell you. This place was amazing the food was hot fresh and actually edible. Take the time skip the gas station food and swing in this place has a drive thru and dinning I got a sausage, egg and cheese biscuit with a side of gravy and tater tots. Food was really good. I got the gizzard dinner and for right at $10 after taxes you could feed 2 people. I was only able to finish half. The gizzards were perfectly cooked. They were very tender. Once you've done "throwed rolls" (Lamberts) you're left with few choices in Sikeston. Jay's Krispy Fried Chicken is one of them, and they've been around a long time. Also heard they have a buffet, so you know I'm down (up) for that. Rolled in, ordered at the counter. "Do you want a breast or wings?" Well, a breast, I guess, and they handed one over on a disposable tray and I headed to a table adjacent to the buffet area. So apparently, unless I missed something, the "buffet"here is one piece of piping hot fried chicken and all the sides on the buffet you want. There were also unidentifiable (to me) chicken bits on the steam table. Otherwise, standard fare, salad fixings, mashed, gravy, couple different beans, greens and the like. Might have had soup, too, I think. I loaded up. I'm got a high degrees of confidence those side dishes came straight from a number 10 can delivered by Sysco or similar. No matter, it's a good value. And the chicken IS exceptional. I'd do it again, but stick to the menu. They seem to do a brisk take-out and drive thru biz. Open early. read more

Yelp never lets me down! We were passing through sikeston early and only a handful of restaurants were open. You order at the counter and and the staff is friendly. They were good! The fried coating reminded me of KFC's--which I think is a good thing. It basically tasted like--I hate saying this--like chicken. But it is chicken, so there you go. Nevertheless, I suppose that the more resigned of us would claim anything is OK in moderation. Went to Jays this morning. Drive thru. Order biscuits and gravy. 3.52. Gave lady a 20. Took my change and food and drove home. Got home turns out she gave me two fives a one and the coins. Should have been a 10 a 5 a one and coins. Called Jays spoke to guy, said he would have to count the register. He called me back left voicemail said the register was right nothing he could do. 5 bucks not a big deal at all. What bothers me is dishonesty. If you can't trust a place over 5 bucks not any reason to go back. Too bad though, I've been going there for years descent enough food. But way to many choices for decent food to choose a place you know you have trust issues with. I would have chalked up to simple mistake if he had called and said "yep register was 5 bucks over". But when you report it that quickly and register is right, only conclusion I can make is clerk pocketed 5 bucks. If she did it once she'll do it again.
