Cafe-style food selection process; either pick ready made foods from buffet, or order from the grill. We ordered a burger and a BLT (I asked for double-bacon) from grill, and both were excellent. Better still; the Potato Skins were some of the best I've had anywhere! Piled with bacon bits and delicious! I could barely eat my huge serving of Fried Okra (also good), because I was full of Potato Skins! Tons of taxidermy mounts every where; not for PETA fanatics. Don't let the truck-stop looks dissuade you from trying Wally's. They serve large portions of home-style foods, to keep you fueled up & rolling. You don't need an 18-wheeler to appreciate the meals. read more

As you walk in through Boomland, a convenience store to enter, you're greeted with numerous signs reminding you about shoplifting & that they prosecute. Then the whole process to order food in the buffet line, what a debacle! I decided to order a burger & was told it's gonna take 20 minutes. I had to take my tray, get my condiments, utensils, etc. and of course they wanted a tip before I basically took off & waited on myself. I saw a comment recently about tipping. It questioned the act of tipping before you receive your food while in the standing position. Definitely something to consider......and don't forget, NO SHOPLIFTING!! read more

The restaurant was clean when we walked in. It's cafeteria style dining. They have sandwiches and dinner entrees on the menu. The ladies behind the counter were so nice. I chose the chicken wings w/green beans, mashed potatoes w/gravy & dressing. You sure do get a lot of food and it is moderately seasoned (which makes it perfect for me). We were surprised at the great food and great prices at a tourist/gas station! From time to order to pick-up and go was 15 minutes.

4.6.24 - We loved everything about this restaurant. It is cafeteria style where we were able to take our tray through the chow line. The breakfast items were typical and reasonably priced and portioned: eggs, biscuits, hash browns, oatmeal, toast, pancakes. Two adults and two kids ate well for $27. The ladies working here we're very nice and helpful. Staff promptly cleared tables. Clean restaurant. Large and private. I particularly enjoyed the atmosphere (animal exhibits) and unique items (incenses, dream catchers, rare candies, so much stuff) in the attached store. The staff was friendly enough and the restaurant was clean. The food is the reason for my review. The hush puppy was over-fried and tasteless. The fried chicken was good, but only get dark meat, if you want moist and not dry meat. The cornbread was so salty that it was inedible. For a place touting "home cooking ", I expected fresh mashed potatoes not powdered. The best thing about my whole meal were the green beans and the peach cobbler (and the cobbler was only middling). We definitely would not eat here again and wished we had waited the time it took to get to Padukah. read more

It may be at BOOM-LAND ... But, it's a BUST! Avoid this place unless .... you actually like Hospital Grade Cafeteria food. The bacon is good and that's about it! The grits were horrible. The whipped butter product could not resurrect the stale, over-cooked, scoop of glop in the little styrofoam bowl! A scoop of pasteurized scrambled egg product with or without a cheese product are your choices. Not worth the calories! I wish I could give a 1/16th of a Star-Rating! read more

Turkey leg had good flavor but was a little tuff. The mashed potatoes tasted like what I use to have at school was not a fan. Cornbread was dry green beans not bad and chicken was ok. Service was good very nice people. read more

No one has reviewed this place? Are you friggin kidding me? Am I the only person who travels through the real Farmville aka Middle of Nowhere America and eats? Holy Crapiola! I've been coming to Wally's Chew Chew Restaurant/Boomland for the last 15 years with my family and for northern road warriors like us, a meal that is NOT McDonalds and laced with partially hydrogenated vegetable oil (ok well the fried chicken my be full of trans fat, but it sure is good) is welcome. They specialize in home cookin' cafeteria style and you can get chicken, ribs, cornbread, string beans and white potatoes, mashed potatoes and all the fixins. A word to the wise - skip the shells and cheese (oof...) and get a giant sweet tea to wash it all down. You will be good to go. Step on over to the boomland section and get your fill of rural america souvenirs, fireworks, and my favourite - cheap sudoku books. You want it? Boomland has it. read more

Four Down home points! I was caught in a typical Midwestern thunderstorm and literally asked a policeman where the best place to eat in town. He did not hesitate, he said "Wally"s". I hurried to beat the storm and entered this huge building and found out I was on the wrong side. The restaurant is located on the east side of the huge establishment. It's located at "Boomland", a local tourist spot that sells about everything under the sun. I literally got back in my car and drove to the other end of the building..That is how huge it is. I entered and was amazed at the size of this place. Not many people were there at the time. I have heard that it is packed most of the time. I pride myself on not going at the busiest of times. I stopped a young lady who was cleaning the floor and asked the procedure for getting service in this huge place. She pointed me to the start of a cafeteria style line and I found what I was looking for. The place is spacious and clean. You are in fact served cafeteria style from a selection of down home southern goodies. Perfectly fried chicken, green beans, corn and mashed potatoes and gravy and away I went. Got a little hot sauce for the chicken and was ready to dig in.. The side dishes were great but Chicken is always the real test of a place like this for me. I chose a breast and a wing. I started tearing into the chicken breast and found it crispy, juicy and very tender, not dry at all! Very tasty indeed. The breast is hard to fry without it getting dry but Wally's passed the test in spades.. Don't forget the glorious deserts.. If you are going from Chicago to Memphis and want to try real southern goodness I wholly endorse Wally's Chew Chew. Gotta love the name. Ha! After you eat you can browse "Boomland" for about an hour and never see the whole thing. An easy four stars for me! read more

Been here twice, and each time I am surprised to find this to be a caffeteria style restaurant. Plenty of good food served school lunchroom style. This trip was a reasonable 7.99 dinner entre with two sides and a roll. You have a choice to add deaert and any extras like a drink. The coffee is weak and watery most likely due to not enough grounds during brewing. The place is clean and plenty of space with a couple TV's hanging to watch. There is also a home made fudge and ice cream counter which sells by the pound for sharing with friends and family. The decor is awesome with a hand crafted village of the town back when, and several stuffed, or preserved wildlife and birds of sorts. I prefer to sit down and order with aervers and waitresses but, the added shopping and worlds largest fireworks stand make it a trip worth taking. read more

My daughter and I were starving and we saw Wally's and decided to give it a chance. I am so glad we did because the food was delicious. This is a cafeteria style restaurant and I don't usually like those kind of places. Well Wally changed my mind. The chicken was cooked to perfection. The potatoes tasted like the really thing if they come out of a box they fooled me for sure. The black eyed peas, corn and green beans were good as well. My daughter loved the cornbread muffin. They also had different stations about one or two other ones if I am recalling right but we just got our meal and our drinks. We sat in the dinning area and it was very clean. They come and get your plates off the table. I didn't wait to see anyone to ask for a to go container but I do believe they will bring you one. This place is great for groups because you can choose what you want and slide on down the line. The décor for me was interesting because I not us to seeing Deer and Moose heads on the wall. I have seen a singing fish(theirs was real) before but that didn't stop me from chowing down on the great plate of food in front of me. I hope if we make the trip again we stop back by Wally's because it was very good. If you live in the area or passing through I think you should give Wally a try. As always folks... Last weekend my husband & I drove from Chicago to Tennessee for a family reunion. Don't get ask why we didn't fly. Anyway, after hours in a car we stopped for gas and a bathroom and smelled something wonderful.....home cooking...at a gas station?! Wally's Chew Chew is adjacent to Boomland, a gas station/grocery store/the largest fireworks store. Wally's was packed! After standing in the cafeteria style line for 10 minutes we left with fried catfish, hush puppies, baked beans and green beans. OMG! OMG!! OMG!!! That food was fan-freakin-tastic. I've never had road trip food that was this heavenly. All weekend I kept thinking about how we were going to pass Wally's again on the way home and what deliciousness I was going to get next. Four days later and we're back at Wally's, this time not as crowded and we dined in. Catfish, hush puppies, baked beans, mashed potatoes & gravy and corn. OMG!!!! It was even better. Thank goodness I live nowhere near Wally's otherwise I'd be clinically obese. read more

Stopped at Boomland for gas and stuff, figured we would eat while stopped. We were expecting a restaurant but instead found a cafeteria. Huge dining area, only about 8 diners in the place. They only offer what's on the steam table which the lunch lady serves up for you, offerings were such as lasagna, fried chicken, meat loaf, mashed potatoes and gravy, veggies etc. I asked about soup, they don't have it. Really big trucker-sized portions, food was decent but warm not really hot. They had a sign that you could order grill -type items like burgers n such, but you would have to wait for it to be cooked, and I thought it said like 20 mins. but don't really remember. Overall it was ok but wouldn't pull over just to eat there. read more

Really not worth your time. This place is set up as a cafeteria. That a fine.. but the food looks like "slop". Apparently people can wait in line for a long time just to get in.. and it has a ton of seating. I'm really not sure what the drive is here. I thought it would be a good fit because I love comfort food... nope. The service was good and friendly and the place was super clean. Unfortunately that is not enough to get me to go back if I'm ever in the area again. Avoid If possible. read more

Cafeteria style food, that tasted ok. The pulled pork did not taste smoked to me, and lacked flavor in my opinion. The fried chicken was pretty good and was moist. Food was hot and nothing tasted bad. The server wasn't as friendly as we thought she should be. She was pretty sharp spoken and seemed to be in a hurry although we were the only ones in line. The place was very nice looking and appeared clean. The price for me, my wife and 2 boys was $22.11 and we feel we got our money's worth of food. Refills are not free, but if I would have brought a gas receipt in, from their gas station, I could have gotten a free small drink. The bathrooms are located in the adjoining gift shop/store. Cafeteria style food with heavy emphasis on the meat. Veggies do have a few options including fried cream corn, corn on the cob, mashed potatoes without gravy, and the green beans. The roll that came with it was a bit underdone but decent. Overall, not a bad choice if on a roadtrip. read more

I can not pass this place on Friday or Monday without stopping for the catfish. It is delicious! The fried chicken is good too. The lines can be long sometimes but it is worth the wait. I also give a thumbs up to the hush puppies, green beans, corn and banana pudding. read more

Stopped here to get a bite to eat before hitting the road to Chicago, but after my two young children, my husband and myself had to walk through a cloud of smoke from 5 waitresses sitting outside on the walkway, all puffing on cigarettes, it was a total turn off. I understand that people smoke but ay least have them do it some where not so out in the open especially in front of a place to eat and where people walk. read more

I have been driving past Wally's twice a month for the last 6 months. I have learned to travel on Sunday -- the only day they serve chicken n' dumplings. It is the best thing ever!! Sure would like to get the recipe! read more
