Best place to get Middle Eastern food in Carbondale. It just has pretty limited hours unfortunately. Aban Kitchen is pretty authentic. Prices are pretty good for the portions. They have the classic favorites like falafel and tabbouli. A small place that has a coziness. It's pretty limited as far as hours, with it only being open in the evenings. The menu features platters and sandwiches. Has most of the usual items. There's the classics like kabobs and shawarma. It's about $12 for an entree. We got a couple of the ones for vegetarians. I got the Falafel Entree. This came with a generous amount of falafel, along with hummus, pitas, a salad, and tahini. She got the falafel but in a pita. This looked like a pretty good sandwich. Good place except the hours. It's only open a few hours in the evenings, and it's closed on Mondays. There's meaty options, and plenty of things for vegans and vegetarians. read more

Service was exceptional! I walked in on a Tuesday evening and only seen one staff member, same guy was taking orders, serving and cleaning. I was exhausted for him but he didn't seem phased and offered great service despite having a 3/1 job. The place was clean with ample seating. They have menus you can scan and order directly at the table. Initially I ordered take-out bc there were small children present who were loud. Once my food was ready, the children left and they gladly allowed me to dine in with my take out bag. The food was made to order, took barely 15 mins. There was a large portion of chicken and rice but small portion of salad. The chicken required some salt but overall it was good. The pastry was abnormally small but traditionally delicious. I'll be back to try other menu items. Definitely patronize them! Carbondale needs more restaurants! There is street parking and a lot across the street, free. They are closed on Mondays! read more

Everything about my first experience with Yemeni food at Aban Kitchen would prompt a return. While Yemeni food may seem exotic there's a lot folks with traditional American comfort food preferences would find to like off Aban's menu. Lamb substitutes for pork in various dishes but other than that chicken and beef are the main meats. My Chicken Haneez was very familiar: roasted chicken quarters with rice and veggies. Yellow jasmine rice is a tad sweeter than the usual white rice of many US dishes. And though the vegetable stew was not in a broth the potatoes, carrots, and zucchini tasted like they were plucked from a soup bowl. We stopped in on a Sunday night. Our waiter was attentive and friendly. The restaurant was busy with take out orders and there were some tables that were full I ordered the chicken schwarma plate. The chicken, rice and salad were all delicious. My wife ordered the chicken kabobs. We both thought our dinner was better than the other The portions were large and the price was reasonable. This place is a great restaurant for southern IL. When they offered indoor dining, it was such a fun experience to sit in the individual booths on the floor that were private and would be a great place for a date. There was also dining tables for those who didn't want that experience. Now, they are only pick-up, to my knowledge. The food there is amazing. Wonderful food that taste exactly like moms cook back home. If you're a meat lover try Fahsa, and ask for their homemade hot sauce. They will serve it with oven bread that tastes delicious. You'll wait a little bit before getting your order, but honestly it's worth it. Lamb Mandi is also great. Authentic and DELICIOUS!!! I had the kofta kebab, and it was perfectly spiced and cooked. My wife had some of the freshest tasting falafel we've ever had. The rice was also great - tastes just like the rice we have in the Middle East. The nan (large round flatbread) was authentically and freshly prepared in a clay oven and was wonderful. Then, to top it all off, we had phenomenal tea! I had the regular Yemeni tea (no milk) while my wife had the Aden tea (like a chai latte). Delicious food at very reasonable prices! We enjoyed the shakahoka and the vegetable stew and I loved the fassolia (red kidney beans). The bread was also delicious. The food was hearty and very accessible for a midwestern palate. We called in a carry out order and it was ready by the time we arrived. Oh my gosh! We had an amazing lunch today and I think I've found my newest favorite restaurant here in Carbondale! I had the Lamb Haneez with stewed vegetables and yellow rice, while my son had the Lamb Mogulgul with yellow rice also. Both dishes were cooked to perfection and excellently spiced. My lamb shank was accompanied by a slightly marinated tomato and onion salad and also had fresh, spicy almost salsa like sauce to add with the meat. It was absolutely delicious. I am still smiling just contemplating about how wonderful our dining experience was at Aban's Kitchen. My son's Lamb was minced and cooked with an assortment of vegetables too. He had the choice of yellow or white rice and was very glad he went with the yellow rice that also had some of the marinated tomato and onion with it. He had the Yemeni Tea and I enjoyed the Aden Tea, both had aromatic spices of cardamom, ginger, cinnamon and clove. We also ordered the Baba Ganoush which was served with freshly baked flat bread, yummy, yummy, yummy! The staff were very efficient and friendly. They made sure we were enjoying our food and were more than happy to refill our tea and ice water whenever needed! We will be back as often as possible; my son is already planning to take his sister and her husband there when they come from Virginia for a visit later this week! Oh, by the way, I've lived all over the world as an Army Wive and my kids are Army Brats. So, I can assure you that we know what we're talking about when we say that the food was excellent and very authentic. Soup came out still boiling in a stone bowl on a wooden platter. Had to dip the fresh made bread into it until it cooled enough to eat with spoon. . All the meals came with lemons, a small container of very spicy tomatoes and jalapeños, soup and a kind of chai; very sweet black tea with spices. didn't get a chance to sit on the floor traditional style where you take off your shoes and sit on cushions. I have had: LOVE THESE Chicken Haneez Lamb Haneez Lamb Chops (not always available and be prepared for about 35 minutes) Grilled Chicken (not always available and be prepared for about 35 minutes) Any of the stews The Yemeni bread (not the pita...this is big and hot and is very good with hummus and baba ganoush (eggplant). NOT MY FAVORITE but I am pretty particular Falafel - kinda hard and deeply brown...not crisp on the outside and hot on the inside. You can sit in booths or you can sit on cushions on the floor (shoes off!) and eat. You are not rushed through your meal and can have a good time talking while eating. Five stars. read more
