I've had this place bookmarked for so long and I've finally made my way here. It gets pretty busy (even when we came before what would have been dinner rush) but the queue moves pretty quickly and seats become available (you grab a table after placing an order). We tried the lahmacun and the pide with the chips. They were both prety hearty and not too heavy. The wood oven gave it a good smoky flavour. The chips were also quite tasty and you can tell the ingredients are thoughtfully prepared! The space itself is quite small and casual but the food does come out quickly. We went for an early dinner last Saturday since he had been driving much of the day coming for spring break. And as I rattled off where we could go he found Balkan intriguing. We were just after 5 pm. People were there BUT THERE WAS NO LINE. What magic is that?!?! He looked for a while at the menu and I said I needed a pide. We could get a couple of things to share. He handed me the menu and said I should just order. I ordered us the sopska salad, a vegetable pide special -- beets a key ingredient, and chicken doner. The salad came and he dove in fast. As he slowed a bit he said how much he enjoyed the freshness it offered. The pide came next and he was sold! Hadn't tasted anything like it but loved it through and through! He knew he would love the doner by then. And the line of happy people grew throughout our time there. This was by far one of the best restaurant experiences we've had. From the moment we walked in until the moment we were walking out we received a 10/10 experience. We walked in and while in line a staff member came by to explain their specials and menu, and when I asked their recommendation they gladly gave it. We were shown in right away - you decide on your food, pay first (very decent price point) and are then seated. The service was lovely and the restaurant wasn't too loud despite being quite busy, which was great! I got a beef Lahmacun and my friend tried a chicken Döner, and you bet we wiped our plates clean. YUM! I have been wanting to try this place for forever and it certainly did not disappoint. We went around 12:30 on a Saturday, so we had a bit of a wait but it was definitely worth it. We went to Balkan Treat Box for a quick valentines lunch. We tried to avoid the crown by going after the lunch rush a bit after 2pm but it was packed as usual. It's so good. Of course you can't blame folks for filling the restaurant. There was a line out the door even though it was raining. The staff did well getting everyone through the line and seated as quickly as possible. One server accidentally broke a plate while we waited in line. I appreciate the way the whole staff there always keeps calm and moves on. They had a valentines special dessert that sounded amazing but they were sadly out. Let's talked spiced meats. In my head, that's going to trigger thoughts of Balkan Treat Box. Kind of dumb name (but I get it, coming from a food truck), stupid good food. Drove up from Memphis for the day. I'd read about this place on Eater and had been curious. After procuring copious amounts of sausage from G&W, we headed over for a bite. This place is really, really well done. The staff is hyper-knowledgeable. I haven't had Balkan before. Greek sure, stuff roasted on vertical spits definitely, but not Balkan proper. I told the guy at the counter what sounded good based upon my review of the menu, he helped narrow it down for there. I got the #1, cevapi, aka little sausages in a massive pita with onions. Well damn. The warm slice of the meat, the buttery taste of the dollop of creamy condiment, the pickled red stuff...put them together in one bite and it's a bit overwhelming but delicious. The pita was most appreciated when sopping up the sausage drippings. The taste I had of the pide warrants this being the thing I order next time. Each dish had a depthy spiced profile. And not the same spice profile on each. The breads are all delicious. Despite all being Balkan, it's the variety that BTB offers that surprised me. So it's a 5 star joint. High praise...this may because I'm new to Slavic meats and spiced meats are my thing. Maybe there's a lot more out there, but for a guy from the land of smoked meats and catfish, the novelty by itself (though hard to discount the execution of each offering) biases me toward BTB reaching 'holy crap, where has this been since I've had teeth' status. So, we officially stopped by Balkan Treat Box for lunch. This place is well-reviewed by almost everyone, whether it be a family member or a pro food critic. So, of course we had to try it out for lunch. Be warned, the parking is tight. We ended up parking behind a different business, (not sure if that's allowed or not but it's all that was available). When you walk in, you are instantly overwhelmed, but not necessarily in a bad way. The store is small, it actually replaced the Stratton's Cafe that we used to always dine at. The temperature is a bit warm, probably because of the ovens, and the entire place smells of Balkan spices. The staff were great at first, but then faded away as we began to ate our food. The guy who checked me out was very informative about the food, but then it took ages to get someone to refill our water. Granted, it was decently busy inside. The food was pretty darn good. I wouldn't say it was mind-blowing, but it was flavorful and presented beautifully. I got the Doner, and my Mom got the Spicy Chicken Pide. We both preferred the Pide. I ordered #3 and my mom a #1 and the hummus which we were told runs out daily. #1- was flavorful but needed the spicy sauce hummus was not anything special or worth the $10. It didnt come with enough bread. #3 spicy chicken was good, it had tomatoes and was missing the red pepper flakes I asked for extra spice. Overall, everything was flavorful. Full disclosure--I'm not usually a fish person but I actually really enjoyed it! The flavors were fresh and balanced, and it was definitely a unique sandwich experience. We don't eat red cabbage in the Balkans. We don't even grow it. The most unBosnian and unBalkan thing about it was that there were no tomatoes on the side or in the salad!!!! I've been coming to Balkan Treat Box since they opened their brick and mortar in 2019. It's one of those buzzy places seen on the news even outside of Missouri and the chefs was named a James Beard finalist. This was my first time back in a few years, and I was curious to see if it still held up. Good news, food is still really solid. I've always loved how there's a real sense of hustle without chaos. The line moves fast and the food quickly served as well as beautifully presented. I also respect that at its core, this is a family run business with a tight knit team, reflected in the efficient and warm service. The highlights here, for any menu item is the 1) bread, whether it's the somun or the Turkish wood fired flatbread. It's soft, chewy, and slightly smoky from the oven. 2) toppings and sauces-- flavorful, fresh, and really well balanced. The ajvar and kajmak especially add a great richness. Where it falls just a little short is the meat. It's not bad, but it doesn't really stand out. It gets kind of lost under the flavors of everything else. As a Balkan cuisine place, I'd expect the meat to shine on its own, but it felt more like a supporting role than the main event. Also, I remember when most items were around $11-$13. At $17 now, it's starting to creep out of that sweet spot of value. We got: Pide with chicken ($17) - Wood-fired flatbread, cheese, ajvar, kajmak, herbs, with a side of cabbage salad. This is still my go-to, favorite and would recommend for any first timer. The cabbage salad is perfect to balance out the heavier flavors. Doner with spicy chicken ($17) - Served in their signature somun bread with onion, cheese, cabbage, tomato, lettuce, BTB sauce, and chips. Solid, but still prefer pide.
