My wife and I came to this restaurant with a friend of hers and her family, based on a lot of positive reviews. Unfortunately, the kitchen let my wife and me down (our polite friends deflected on their opinions). Our server was attentive and entertaining, but she could have been more knowledgeable about food and been more persuasive with the chef (both to be discussed later). First, the Caprese Salad and smoked salmon appetizers were gobbled up by our friends. The empanadas and paté that my wife and I shared were delicious, too. We thought the kitchen should have supplied more bread and mustard to accompany the large hunk of paté and generous pile of marmalade. Second, when I asked what piece of chicken would be served with the jerked chicken plate, the serve said it would be a bone-in breast. It turned out to be a thigh, much less meat than a breast. Had I known that my entree was merely a thigh, I would have ordered something different. Also, the skin wasn't crispy, which wasn't so bad. But what happened to the jerk seasoning? I didn't taste habañero, allspice, nutmeg, onion, garlic, rosemary, paprika, ginger, rum (for a wet jerk), or any other distinctly Caribbean element. I've prepped jerk chicken and seafood for years at home and eaten it in the Bahamas and Virgin Islands. GG's chicken doesn't pass for jerk. I think the tablespoon of sauce on it was supposed to be mango-based, but it was difficult to tell. The saffron pilaf was cold and the sautéed kale (?) was crisp-fried but fairly tasteless. My wife had the Mediterranean Meatballs with harissa, served over polenta. The meatballs, which were richly seasoned like falafel, were overcooked and very dry (like falafel). There was very little sauce to counter the seasonings and moisten the beef. The owner or manager needs to train servers about the food and service. When I told the server, as she bussed our table, that she was incorrect about the chicken and the pilaf was cold, she said, "Well, the kitchen has a lot of chicken pieces back there." What? No acknowledgment of her mistake, along with a non-sensical explanation. Also, the owner needs to explain to waitstaff that chorizo is pronounced CHorizo, not Korizo, when describing the dish (maybe that should have tipped me off while ordering). Finally, before we ordered, the server and were chatting it up about how we were all looking forward to the eclipse, I was from out of town, and it was my birthday. When it was time to order dessert, I asked for the raspberry truffle chocolate cake. She said it was the one dessert that she couldn't offer to me for free (I never asked for a freebie or expected it, but I've never heard that excuse before). I still ordered and enjoyed it, but the transaction came off as inconsistent with the rapport. Based on all the positive reviews from others, this place may be shining on other nights. But on this Sunday night before the eclipse, it was in the dark. read more

This place was amazing. On top of the fact I didn't have a reservation, Andrea the owner came over after speaking with me on the phone and spoke with us. The steak was honestly among the best steak I've had, beating out plenty of actual steakhouses I've had across Missouri and Illinois. The mashed potatoes were amazing as well and it was very reasonably priced. The atmosphere in here was also good. Music and everybody here was professionally dressed. On top of that, there was a party of teenagers that left and the owner stood outside to make sure they all made it to their vehicles safely. I cannot recommend this place enough - If anybody is looking for a place to go that's nice, not overpriced and also welcoming, this is it. Service - 5/5 Welcoming and friendly owner greets you at the door. Staff, although not terribly experienced, are very well meaning and try hard to make sure customers have a good time. Overall, the food was perhaps a 4/5 by big city standards, but certainly a 5/5 by Southern IL standards. Would recommend the Raspberry Chocolate Ganache cake. Stopped by Global Gourmet with my family on our road trip, and we all loved it. It's a small but elegant restaurant with a diverse menu. All our meals were exquisite. The salmon was cooked to perfection. It was flaky and delicious. It was topped with a peach-poblano salsa and barbecue sauce, which added a layer of spice and flavor. The red snapper was delightful. It was perfectly cooked and paired with a unique and delicious side, corn and okra. The chicken was a bit bland, I prefer it slightly more flavorful but it was cooked perfectly. The potato du jour was phenomenal, very creamy and almost melted in your mouth. Now desserts. The pecan pie was very yummy. The outer layer was crispy and the inside was thick and creamy, giving off a variation in textures. The coconut cream pie was outstanding, very creamy with coconut flakes on top. The peanut butter cup, great in flavor almost like a peanut butter whipped cream was delicious but a sugary overload, only needed about two bites before it was sickening sweet. read more

Yikes!! I came here feeling excited by all the positive Google reviews, and left baffled and hungry.That's a big fail in my book. Anyway. I'll start with the positives...cool eclectic interior, food was decent and nicely plated, the Wine got me through the experience so I loved it the most, welcoming and friendly owner who seemed to be very proud of his food and establishment. These were the 2 stars. Everything after this was really in need of improvement. I'm not going to go off like a raging beech, I just want to provide some honest objective and subjective opinion. It has to be both, because my initial opinion before I even went is that this place is going to be amazing (still baffled by the 200 plus positive reviews that claim this). So here are my main dislikes: limited small and confusing menu, prices unclear on the menu, portions are very small but very high in price, 5 of the items were sold out!?!? Huh? (We found this out after the server went to place the order...5 times he returned to disappoint us...ugh). We were forced to choose items we weren't particularly interested in and almost walked out. Finally...we never received the pasta dish we ordered...literally what seemed like the only dish available without trouble. None of us noticed because we waited so long for our food we were deep throating the morsels that did arrive. That's it! Good luck to you if you check out this place and I most certainly hope your experience is waaaayyyy better then ours was if you do! God speed to any foodie that tries this place out. Global Gourmet is as classy as you can get in Southern, IL, and they know how to make a GOOD craft cocktail. I absolutely love this spot, and I come every time I come back to visit my alma mater. This is a beautiful, upscale restaurant that we deserve! The food rotates nightly depending on what the chefs want to make. You can always expect a type of seafood, steak, and pasta dish. I get so excited to hear the options each time I come in. I usually end up with the steak, while my fiance gets the pasta dish. We've been able to share each time, but do what works for you. Don't be shocked at the prices. Expect to drop at least $30 for an entree and cocktail. It's worth it. The drinks are reasonably priced in my opinion. If you're used to the simple rum and coke, this place is not for you yet. Stick with dollar night. If you're interested in expanding your palette and experiencing something more than a two ingredient mixed drink, you've found the right place! read more

Found this treasure as we were driving home from wintering down south. Fabulous meal and service and great value. My husband and I really chowed down: to start we shared a shrimp cocktail. The shrimp were large, fresh and firm. Dinner was the duck special. The duck was cooked perfectly and and was served with a delicious sauce with siracha. We also ordered and shared an excellent Caesar salad. We topped it all off with tiramisu and crème brûlée for desser. Yum! We were pleasantly when we got the bill. We're from Minneapolis where a meal like that there would probably cost almost twice what much. read more

My husband and I moved to Southern Illinois from the California Bay Area about seven months ago. Global Gourmet has become our "go to" restaurant for fine food and amazing service. This restaurant is not just about the great food with a menu that has something for everybody, but it's just a great vibe. Super friendly people work here, and super friendly people eat here. We have met some wonderful people at Global Gourmet, as the environment is really set up for socializing. Andrea has travelled the world, and she brings flavors to her dishes that are so delicious. This is one of the best restaurants in town. With an ever changing menu and a dark atmosphere, this restaurant is probably one of the more sophisticated ones around here. You would definitely take someone here on a first date because the prices are high and the mood is mysterious and romantic. I went here on Bastille day this year and the food was excellent. Everything I tried was great. No real problems with anything. However, the service was probably the crappiest I've had in Carbondale. The waitresses took forever to get menus, take orders, and give us water. They forgot drink orders and were hard to flag down. I hate bad service, but I like their food. The wait staff is a bunch of college students so you can image the service you get. They need to take a cue from Hunan. The one interesting thing about this restaurant is that it is the only one that I have ever been to that gives me a full-page invoice for my check. Weird. read more

Global Gourmet will always have my heart. I've travelled from AZ to Carbondale just to snag their pasta of the day. The last time I went, I ordered the chicken empanadas and gnocchi and they were both AMAZING! They also have a very difficult to find, yet very delicious, Cabernet Sauvignon. It's called True Myth, and it's the best! If you're not a wine person, their mojito is also fantastic. Make sure you check out their back patio when you go, it's beautiful! read more

My wife and I recently ate at the Global Gourmet on the recommendation of the hair dresser. We arrived to a quaint little restaurant with Christmas lights and snow covered windows and a single table on the side walk outside. I was initially reluctant to get out of the car because a large man in his Christmas pajamas who looked homeless was in front of the restaurant. As I went inside I found out it was Tibby who is one of the proprietors who sat us at our high top table by the window and proceeded to enamor us with conversation about us and people we both knew in our small town. Our server was prompt and delivered a nice Sicilian Moscato (Villa Pozzi) that complimented our Stuffed Mushrooms and Spinach salad nicely. The appetizers while looking great, lacked flavor. The maple-cider vinaigrette seemed to be missing the cider or v in the salad dressing and the four small mushrooms seemed overwhelmed by the greens. The entrees were good - not great. The salmon was overcooked on the thin end of the salmon and while the pomegranate arils was a nice garnish, the pomegranate soy glaze was understated. The Filet Mignon was served beautifully on a bamboo cutting board. It had a perfectly cooked interior and was a wonderful piece of meat but it was ruined by the burned Au Poivre Burgundy Pepper Sauce outer layer. The pan grilled vegetables and potatoes looked great but the potatoes seemed old or had some off flavor I could not recognize. The chocolate with Raspberry cake was lovely looking and tasted heavenly but the top chocolate layer was hard, thick and served with soup spoons. That combination insured that we smashed the cake when trying to eat it. Overall the food was good, the atmosphere was pleasant but for the $95.00 tab, I expected more and the chef needs to pay more attention to their execution... read more

We were so impressed with Global Gourmet, so upscale for Carbondale! My husband & I are SIU Alumni & decided to visit, it's been at least 30 years since our last time in town. A friend of a friend had recommended this restaurant. Such a little gem! We decided to sit at the bar to have a cocktail & dinner. The bartender was so sweet & very attentive. Our food was amazing. We started with the trout appetizer which was amazing! My salad made with Buratta was equally delicious which I had as my meal as well as my husband's Gnocchi. Traveling through town husband found this gem on his phone. It was a little hard to find at night but worth it. It is a very cool feel when you walk in. Small and intimate. owner was super friendly and wait staff as well. Explained menu with the days specials. Husband stationed in Greece for 2 yrs and had the Greek lamb with orzo. He was transported back to Greece. Cocktails are top shelf I had chicken with figs on sweet potatoes and Brussels sprouts. I have to admit I have tried brussel sprouts before and I do not like them. Period. These were amazing and if I could make them like this I'd be eating them all the time. The entire dinner was amazing. I left with a full satisfied stomach. No to go box as it was the perfect size. My home in Wisconsin is 533 miles from here. When I travel south again I will stop here!!! Super great owners. read more

On the recommendation of one of our daughter's professors we tried this place while we were in town and we were not disappointed. We sat at the bar and had great wine then decided on the gnocchi special and had the charcuterie tray to start. Everyone was very pleasant and the service was great. Shelby took great care of us and we will be back in a few weeks. Can't wait to try more of their great menu items. So far, one of my favorite new places. What the small seating area lacks, the charm, people and menu make up for. Make sure you say hi to Tippy. Everything is a little unique from the water bottles ( which were really deco, maybe tequila in a past life, bottles) the decor is antique without losing charm. The wine list has some really classic wines, but doesn't feature any from the region ( and allegedly there are many good ones ) which was a little disappointing, but they make a perfect martini. read more

We ate here one night for dinner while visiting some people who live in Carbondale. This happened to be on the weekend of the eclipse, which brought a LOT of visitors to town. That being the case, it was quite crowded here (Global Gourmet). However, they were able to seat us fairly quickly on the patio out back. This turned out to be better than eating inside because it was much more quiet and you could hear what people were saying. We ordered drinks because one of the people I went with, who has been here many times, said they made great drinks with lots of alcohol in them. I had one of the special drinks they made just for the eclipse, which was pretty good. To eat, I had the mojo pork with succotash and saffron rice. The food was good, I just wish there had been a little more of it. That being the case, we got dessert, which was small but quite good. All in all, I did not leave hungry, which is always a good thing. With that said, I wish they had larger portion sizes and I wish they were a little faster (maybe they were just busy with all the extra customers the eclipse brought in). Other than that, I did think they were a bit on the pricey side; certainly more than I'd expect for a town the size of Carbondale. We waited 20 minutes for the waitress to take our drink order, we were served a scoop of mushy, bland rice as a side fish for our $20 entrees, and then waited another 20 minutes to get a bill. Places like this are my favorite. Not deserving of a 5000 character review, because for the most part it's a pretty great place, and it doesn't take 5000 words to say that. See my other reviews if you want to read a book. Andrea Barclay consistently serves up an excellent rotating menu, with different dishes every weekend suited to what's fresh and in season. I can only count one or two times I've ever had a bad dinner, and find it to be an extremely reliable place to enjoy a fine dinner in a very original, metropolitan, international atmosphere. In addition to excellent food and desserts, the selection of liquor, mixed drinks, wine and beer are what I like to call "fool-proof" in this context. There are no bad wines on the menu, and there's a great selection of them to suit anything you could possibly order. The mixed drinks are usually pretty generous as well. Be forewarned, my only complaint, and only at times can be the service. Please understand before you go, this is a small place, and on the weekend they stay extremely busy. You can call ahead for reservations, but they don't always work -- it's not the fault of the staff -- the tables get eaten up the minute they come open, often by people who've been sitting at the bar for quite a while. All in all, a great place to go and enjoy. Become a regular -- you'll be remembered, and you'll develop a good friendship with the staff there. read more

Go here for drinks, skip the food. They have nightly drink specials and focus pretty heavily on cocktails, which is pretty unusual for Carbondale. The drinks are fine. My partner and I split three appetizers: the brie, artichoke dip, and a prosciutto small plate. The brie was of low-to-medium quality and was dressed up with a kahlua sauce, nuts, a few slices of apples, and--I kid you not--Townhouse crackers. Straight from the supermarket box. Most definitely not gourmet, and they did not work with the brie. We immediately ran out of apple, needed to ask for twice as many crackers for the sizeable wedge of brie served, and the brie definitely could have used more of that kahlua sauce. This dish was $10. We had to dig in the artichoke dip to find artichoke, otherwise it was just a rich creamy sauce of cream cheese and sour cream--nothing special, no seasonings or anything, just straight up creaminess. It came with sliced veggies (fine) and storebought pita bread that wasn't heated up or toasted. I liked the prosciutto plate the most, that came with some I think bleu cheese, balsamic syrup, roasted tomatoes, and fried sage. It wasn't really an appetizer to share, though, as it was just a pile of prosciutto dusted with cheese/tomato/sage. Overall, we found the food very mediocre. Service was nice. read more

I want to give a four star review, but it is not quit there. I use to come here all the time for drinks when I went to SIU. It was one of the first places that I was introduced to real crafted cocktails. It was kind of my stepping tone to good cocktails, but now I have had much better. I was surprised at how much my tastes have changed... Anyway, the location is great. An old building on the edge of the tiny town square. An L shaped granite bar, tables scattered, and a great outdoor patio in the back when the weather is nice. There are a few international flourishes like a menorah being lit for the Jewish holiday. I have always loved the eclectic feel here. The service is welcoming, but can be a bit slow. Especially when there is one bartender taking care of the hole bar. The food is interesting. The menu usually rotates. The cheese plates are always a great stand by. Though they usually have some sort of seafood. I had the Mediterranean Seafood Stew my most recent visit. Which was good, not great. The two cocktails I had recently were a bit dull. The Old Fashion is pretty flavorless, and the Pimms Cup was not up to snuff. Anyway, all that being said, still an enjoyable place to grab a drink. Especially if you want to get away from the college crowd. read more

When we ate here six weeks ago, the food was terrific and the flexibility to our vegan diet was clearly in place. Most items on the menu are meat-based but they were flexible in serving us hummus, lentil soup, mixed greens salad, and penne pasta w veggies and marinara sauce. And our waitress was the sweetest, very helpful and always checking up on us. The atmosphere was so lovely, we thought we'd slipped away to a bistro in SoHo, surely not the dale. We returned this evening with three friends, two of whom also were veg. We were actually greeted by the chef as we looked at the menu to see what options there were for our diverse needs. He stated that most certainly we would have choices outside what was printed and that he would do whatever he could to meet our needs. His cool demeanor did not match his words, but our friends were game to try it because of our previous positive experience. Well, the hummus was as good as the first time but it was a comedy of errors and missteps after that. The waitress helped us figure out our options and had to go back and forth FOUR times to say "sure we have that" and then return to say "no go" or that they had run out or that they only had TWO vegetables to choose from or that "no, rice is not an option", even though it came with the trout meal: No lentil soup - the soup of the day was a sausage based (potato?) and lentil is not in the rotation today; Salad downsized; no greens (romaine or iceberg instead); Penne pasta only entree option - no rice or GF option to pasta; Pesto sauce not an option after all, even after we had all ordered it; Only "fried?" spinach and asparagus - nothing else, not even a carrot! Total cost? One trout dish @ $18, three hummus @$7, five dinner salads @ $7, and three veg sides @ $5 right at 90 bucks - before tax and tip! Judging from the poor stock of veg food the chef had, he could have been straight with us from the start and told us to just go for the wine list instead! So much for his word @ meeting our needs - we were the ones meeting HIS needs w our $$$$ (We seriously considered going to Aldi's and buying him some food--- Or stopping at the Farmer's Market tomorrow to refill his coffers!) if you're going to call your place GLOBAL Gourmet, then adjust your menu accordingly to allow for such issues as gluten sensitivity and veg sensibility in at least a quarter of your potential customers. Always have these options as standard on your menu and we will keep coming back. It's too late for us - we'll be next door at Long Branch. read more

Global Gourmet is one my favorite spots to go to when I'm in the So. IL area. I have moved around the country, and I still say the best mojitos are here! And their food has always been delicious - they tend to have a few items that are regularly on the menu, but then also have some excellent, seasonal specials. Price is good, atmosphere is great for date-night (they also have a back patio that is great to sit on when the weather is nice and not too hot). It does help to have a reservation, as it does get packed on the weekends! read more

Seriously good food with a casual atmosphere. Reservations seem to be a good idea, at least on Friday and Saturday. The restaurant's a little north of the train station in an old block of storefronts, maybe late 19th or early 20th century. An organic food shop's on one end, with a coffeehouse on the other. When you enter, a bar runs down the right wall well stocked with wines. The menu is short and I think frequently changes. The pork tenderloin was excellent, as was the salad. My wife's salmon with asparagus was also excellent. The wine list was welcoming, with apparently carefully chosen wines listed from "Cheap" $5 a glass to "Luscious" at $9 a glass. Really had high hopes for this restaurant. Went and at first it seemed like it was going to be a great experience. The soup was good. The salad on the other hand had the end piece of the lettuce in the bowl. That part of the lettuce is supposed to be in the trash. Then comes the super slow service. Waitress brings out our soup and we had to ask if we could order our entrees. She took them down and left. Some time later the fish tacos arrived. Fish good, however the wrap was burned black. So if you tried to eat it like a taco all you tasted was the burned wrap. Finally steak and salmon arrives. Steak was not very good at all. Cheap cut of meat and was burned. The brussell sprouts was blackened as well. The wine reduction sauce had broken down to a oil on top and the wine that had congealed on the bottom. It was not something to even attempt to try. Salmon the skin was burn completely black. But yet the fish was not cooked. Which lead me to believe they threw that fish on a hot grill skin side down and cooked it. No flavor just horrid. Waitress gets our check after we hunt her down. I give my credit card to pay then she just leaves and never comes back. Finally we get up to find out what was going on. We over hear them talking behind the wall. I F***ing hate this town and I f***ing hate the people in it. Well, we never asked for a discount. Even left a tip. They did take off the salmon and fish tacos. Once again we did not request it. We just wanted to pay and leave to go to another place to eat. As that place was not edible food. Wow, generous pours for drinks! Love that their menu offers champagne cocktails in addition to the full bar. Cheap and strong unlike larger cities I'm usually in! Our server was great both times (and even remembered us on our second visit!). FYI the kitchen closes after 8pm or 9pm, so we could only order appetizers on our first visit. I really loved their matzo ball soup, which is not a common offering but it was a special for Hanukkah! It came with two matzo balls and really lovely broth. The kale salad was also nicely dressed. Their steak was cooked well and served on a wooden board. We also ordered the cardamon creme brule for dessert. So why only 3 stars? Well unfortunately me and my SO came down with the worst food poisoning after dinner that evening (which is impressive considering I have an iron stomach and don't remember the last time I got sick from food).
