Here's my review of the Zen House: My Ducati M900 is deeply emotional to me. My (now late) wife gave it to me new as a birthday present in 1998. I sold it to a friend in 2006, but then it blessedly came back to me 17 years later after she passed. The bike ran fine, but had lots of Bodega corrosion and needed a complete service. The Keihin flatslides were leaking, and the fork tubes were pitted and leaking. But again, the bike ran fine... THE BAD: I just went through two HORRIFIC experiences with two shops over the past 2 years. (#1 is in Rancho Cordova and starts with a "P", #2 is in Santa Rosa and starts with a "B"). They took $4,500 of my money, and #2 actually had to trailer my bike home because they couldn't fix it, and it wasn't rideable any more. The (just replaced) timing belts were so loose that Dave pulled them off by hand. They epoxied my old carburetors together. They changed fork seals on pitted tubes! These are shops with good reputations, but my experience with them could not have been worse. They are either grossly incompetent, or they just wanted to string me along and take my money. Either way, SO disheartening... And #2 actually didn't believe me that the bike ran well when I brought it in. He repeatedly kept telling me that "most customers don't know what a good-running bike runs like", as he's trailering my bike home! I was parts and service manager at Michael's H-D in Cotati for 7 years, I kinda know when a bike is running well or not. I've ridden bikes since I was a kid. THE GOOD (No, THE GREAT): The Zen House changed everything! OMG. It's like the clouds parted when I walked through the door. Dave and Kelley are wonderful. They found the "unavailable" flatslides and "unavailable" fork tubes that the other shops couldn't find. The entire experience was, as Dave calmly puts it, "Not a problem". AND Dave was the only one to notice that my tires were 13 years old! Dangerous, they gotta go. The other shops didn't care, or notice. THIS is the shop you want to take your motorcycle to. They have "the touch", the experience, the vibe, the extreme competence. They make good stuff happen... My deeply heartfelt Desmo is a lively, thriving beast once again because of the Zen House. Excellent motorcycle repair & restoration shop! David does EXCELLENT WORK at reasonable prices and in the time frame he specifies. Although he works on much more exotic bikes, he gladly performed a refresh on my 1981 Yamaha Virago 750 including: Repaint of tank & side panels Repaint the wheels and install new tires Rebuild & repaint rear shaft drive assembly Remove, rebuild and tune, carburetors perfectly - literally they run better than ever before! Installed a new stater and lithium ion battery Rebuilt the forks, and had the lower brushed aluminum sliders re-clearcoated Re-clear coated the brushed aluminum rear hand grab Repaint a portion of the exhaust system Install new left switch pod And various other bits and pieces. Six of us were on a motorcycle road trip and one of my buddies lost a bolt for his throttle housing. We were in Pt Arena getting gas here, and so he walked into the shop to see if they might have a bolt that would work. The gentlemen went in back, came out with some options, one of which was a perfect fit. And he didn't even charge us. A very unique place in downtown Pt Arena, run by very kind people. That has to be one of the coolest little shops I've visited in a long time. I bought a Zen House patch for my jacket so I'll remember it next time I'm in the area. This place is ACE! Dave and Kelley are about the nicest folks you could meet. I brought them my beloved Multistrada for Desmo service. They were very flexible with the scheduling, and made me feel like, not just a valued customer, but like an old friend. They both took time to answer my questions about the bike, the service, and the local area - and invited me their MotoGP viewing parties. There is some pretty tasty hardware sitting around the shop as well. When I rode off, my bike purred like a kitten, and I feel that not only was it serviced with care, but with Quality - in keeping with their name. Zen House specializes in vintage motorcycles - but don't let that sign fool you! Dave is a great guy and celebrated his 1 year anniversary of his shop in this Pt Arena location just this weekend. When I arrived in Point Arena with a frayed clutch cable - he miraculously produced one for my motorycle (he happened to be holding a friend's motorcycle for sale - so I paid for a new one to put on the other bike). He's friendly and generous - he let my friend and me use his tools to install the new clutch cable. His partner Kelly even hooked me up with the local Catholic church rummage sale committee when she heard that my clothing for my 4-day weekend in Pt Arena had all been stolen from a friend's car (even before she arrived). The motorcycle shop shares space with a car service shop and gas station. Lose your balaclava on the road or need a nice long sleeve tshirt - stop by and say "hi" - Dave has a wide range of lube, parts, cleaners and stuff for your motorcycle. read more

I was on a road trip with my girlfriend and at about the same time my engine light came on and her engine started leaking oil like crazy. We figured we were screwed at a small coastal town on a Sunday. Then we pulled into Zen house. Dave pulled out his diagnostic tool and confirmed that my light was indeed my exhaust valve. Then then they made a gasket for my girlfriend's motorcycle and cleaned the oil off her wheel. In the San Francisco Bay area, there are few mechanics qualified to work on Moto Guzzi bikes, especially their fuel injection systems. David Harris has the tools and the knowledge to do any and all Moto Guzzi work since he formerly was the service manager for San Diego's GP Motors, an authorized Ducati and Moto Guzzi dealer. I spent an hour in his shop yesterday and came away even more impressed than I expected to be. My friend had his 2003 Moto Guzzi in for a check of its fuel injection functioning and David had the latest electronic tuning and diagnostic devices needed to do that for Guzzis and Ducatis. He also found other things and even removed the fuel pump and fuel filter from inside the tank to insure the correct (all metal) filter was fitted. The OEM plastic ones distort after immersion in ethanol for a while, causing the bike to lose fuel pressure and quit running. David's hourly rate is $75, which is much cheaper than dealers in the Bay Area. Yes, he's a bit distant, but the ride alone is worth the time. Dave and Kelly are amazing people! Kelly is always warm and treats you like her best friend always. Dave is a true "motorcycle whisperer" who is the only one I'd trust with my 1976 Triumph Bonneville. In fact, he's undone harm other mechanics have done to my bike when I made the mistake of bringing it somewhere else. I drive over two hours one way with my bike on a rented trailer every time I go to see them, and I always come away feeling extremely grateful that they are there. Brought a recently acquired '64 Triumph T100R into the shop &, although clearly busy, they had me out the door & running smooth in a couple hours. Besides the gasket on my carb being busted, Dave adeptly found a few other mechanical flaws in the bike (valves open too wide, many loose bolts, cork gone bad on the oil cap....) & he kindly let me snoop on his work the entire time so I could learn about the bike too, answering all my questions patiently. These guys are the best. Blew out my clutch on the 128 , they told me if I can get it there, they could fix it, and they did, and with an overnight part shipment. They were lifesavers and now the bike runs better than before. Costumer service is top notch and the beautiful Kelly will not only facilitate the endeavor, but can also give you a run down of things to do, eat and stay in town. While on a motorcycle trip up the coast, we found ourselves in dire need of break pads. Dave was great! He ordered what we needed & got break pads in overnight. He helped us get set up with a hotel for the night & even got us a ride to the hotel so we didn't need to walk in the heat dressed in full leathers while backpacking our gear. I have a pretty modified engine in for my 81 Yamaha XS650. Been working on it, building it for four years but I could not get the engine to run correctly. Took the bike to several shops in the bay and Sacramento area that said they know the engine and could fix the running/idling issues. Not one of those shops solved anything. Discovered Zen House and delivered the bike to David and Kelly. David fixed it...completely! I am still in shock how wonderful the bike runs and thank my lucky starts for finding Zen House. This shop is amazing, helpful and an oasis on a road trip for a motorcyclist. They had and replaced my front tire within a half hour and I was back on the road. They even have quality consignment items that are priced right. I bought a helmet and leather pants that fit perfectly for a fraction on the price new. My brother and I were running northbound up the coast when the rear tire on his 1994 Road King went flat. We got a tow to Zen House and met Kelley Litle and David Harris. They had the classic 5.00 x 16 Harley tire in stock. They got the tire removed and replaced in an hour and a half, dropped what they were doing to take care of us. I stopped by again last week and gladly saw they're still in business, celebrating 8 years this month. They have some interesting bikes. On the rack last week were a Morbidelli single racer, a high pipe Triumph twin from Meriden, and a Ducati air cooled twin. Out front were two small four cylinder bikes, a Benelli 250 Quatro and Moto Guzzi 250 Four that looked identical except for the name on the tank. Out back were more Ducatis, a British built Royal Enfield, and a couple of interesting modern Guzzis. Quite nice eye candy and surprising to find in Point Arena. This is a boutique Italian, European and British motorcycle restoration salon with a thriving parts and maintenance business on the side. David and Kelley can live in Point Arena because people will bring their bikes to them anyway. David Harris has had two of his restorations win best of show at the Quail. He's genuinely outstanding at his craft, and he can fettle a 65 year old Italian race bike.. That says a lot about David's skill set. They give good pricing on parts, spares, accessories, and gear because they recognize the need to compete with online vendors. Check it out. read more
